Beautiful church to watch. Large parking space is available. It is free also. You may spend around one to two hours here. The tomb of St. Thomas is located here. Photography is prohibited here. One cool bar is located inside the church compound. Snacks are also available here. Good drinking water is also available here. St. Thomas Pole is also situated just backside of the church. If you like this review, please like and comment. Thank you.

This is a Catholic Latin Church situated at the santhome area of Chennai. Actually this church was built by Portuguese on 1523 AD over the tomb of Thomas the Apostle. This church is built as per British Neo-Gothic style. Also this church is one of the 3 known churches in the world which was built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus that are still exists today, This church is just few meters ahead from Marina beach light house . just at walking distance . Situated totally on main road . the beautiful white structure is visible from road . Basically, there are two portion of this basilica , one you have to watch the tomb by going down at the basement while another one is the church itself. Inside the church there are prayer hall too . The ceilings are made with woods . The whole surrounding is so peaceful . . There are no entry fee at this basilica . Stay open from morning to night . May be morning 7AM - 7PM but better to visit during daytime .

This was my first time visiting a church and I'm overwhelmed to go to such beautiful church. From the beautiful design to well maintained area everything is so great. It has museum where visitors can go. And there's prayer going on in the big church where you can sit and pray. The atmosphere is so soothing. I'm really happy to have visited it. 🤗

I heard a lot about St Thomas Bessilica in Chennai, as a significant place of worship but did not have much idea about it earlier. There only I came to know that. Great blessing for Chennai & India. Only 3 tombs of Jesus Christ's pupils are there world wide & one is in our country. It's a big & beautiful church. Peaceful vibes. I recommend people of all religions to visit here because blessing & divinity has no religion.

Only 3 churches built on tomb of an apostle, structure wise elegant. Although built in grandeur by the Portuguese, we can see the British influence in the current building. Was amazed at the 200 year old pipe organ, classy. Sadly not much effort to protect it, it’s kept open and dusty. There are improvement opportunities, many foreigners visit given their ancestral connection.

It's very nice place to visit. One of the biggest church I have ever seen in Chennai. Very peaceful environment, neat and clean place. It is one of the oldest church in chennai. The cathedral has stunning art and architecture. One of the iconic structures of Madras, and highly religious place. I saw many foreigners when I was visited at that church. Wonderful Architecture.

One of the oldest & goldest church in the chennai. It is famous for St.Thomas basilica. The st.Thomas body has been buried here. Mostly Christians have been visiting here, apart from that foreigners & general audience come for historical background of this place. Santhome cathedral Basilica is maintained very well.

It's a haven of tranquility, perfect for deep reflection and heartfelt prayers. The historical charm and peaceful ambiance make it a must-visit for anyone seeking a quiet sanctuary for spiritual contemplation.

This place is historical and amazing. The church has its origin in the eternal purposes of God. It is the new covenant community of Jesus, rooted in Israel, constructed by Jesus, and inaugurated by the Holy Spirit. The church is the people of God, chosen by the Father, and graciously brought into a relationship with the triune God and one another.

A beautiful cathedral built on the tomb of an apostle of Jesus in the 16th century by the Portuguese. This church is one of the majestic landmarks of Chennai. This is the only Church in India which is built on the tomb of an apostle of Jesus. There are 2 more in the world and they are located in Spain and Vatican City. The architecture is simply stunning and very well maintained. I took my mother and my Russian friends and when they were visiting me. The moment one will walk into, can feel the peace. Highly recommended for everyone to visit at least once in their lifetime.

A very nice, quiet and peaceful place of worship. Though I am a Hindu by religion I was allowed to go inside the Cathedral and offer my prayer to the Lord. I sat there for some time and gained peace of mind and body after a day of hectic tour. The outside beauty of the Cathedral was really charming and fascinating. I loved our Allmighty Lord as well as the nice cathedral.

"San Thome" actually assumes its name from Saint Thomas. Saint Thomas was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus who came to India in 52 AD and martyred in 72 AD at St.Thomas Mount in the city, and was interred in Mylapore, India. Later a church was built over his supposed tomb and today it is known as the Santhome Cathedral Basilica. The Basilica is one of the three churches that claims to have been built over the tomb of an apostle.(Others include St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy and the Church of St. James the Great in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.) With pristine white Neo-Gothic architecture, the church looks splendid in the daylight where the blue of the sky beautifully complements the white church. The interior design is something that completely mesmerises one, the calm and serene setting inside is just what you need when you're looking for a quiet place to pray. There is also a museum of the church where you can learn more about St. Thomas and also visit his burial chamber inside the museum. While returning from the museum, on your right side probably there is a small christian shop where they sell light jewellery, paintings, books, showpieces etc. at a very reasonable price that you can take back home as a memory of this place or for gifting, you should check out this shop as well. Totally enjoyed the visit, I'll surely come back again.

A historical site and the church. The well preserved century old church inner side is very impressive. The outside structure is also very unique. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the tomb of St.Thomas from 1st century and an informative museum attached to it. All these are on back side of the church. Car parking is limited during busy days but street parking in the surrounding may be checked out.

This is located in the San Thome area of Chennai close to the coast of the Bay of Bengal and is one of only 3 churches in the world that enshrines the tomb of an apostle and still stands today. The other two are in the Vatican and in Spain The present structure is believed to date back to 1523, when the structure was built, over the tomb of St Thomas the apostle, by the Portuguese, and renovated and upgraded in status by the British in 1896. There is a museum containing relics related to the apostle as well as to the Church. I visited the evening before Christmas in 2022, when preparations for the Xmas Mass were in full swing, and the atmosphere was at once joyous and divine.

What an incredibly blessed place! Impeccably maintained and radiating serenity, the Perpetual Adoration Chapel creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Stepping into this sacred space, the good ambience is immediately apparent, fostering a sense of tranquility and connection. I felt a deep spiritual presence, believing that Jesus is genuinely there in the Eucharist. Notably, the centralized AC in the Santhome Museum adds to the overall comfort. Considering the peaceful surroundings, introducing an AC option to the Perpetual Adoration Chapel would undoubtedly enhance the already uplifting ambiance of this sacred church. Anyway incredibly blessed place!..

Great place of history and spirituality for people to visit During my visit to the basilica, it reminded me of European architecture and the similarities I've noticed in Europe As always try to make a visit during a weekday, preferably mid day, for a crowd free walk around the place The place draws multitude of visitors from across the state and country, so don't be clingy to your personal space There are also historical artificats around the place. The rest rooms are not worth visiting, but there are some restaurants close by, if you'd want to go for a walk in and out

We visited this church last week. Also known as St Thomas Cathedral Basilica and National Shrine of Saint Thomas, San Thome Church is a Roman Catholic minor basilica at Santhome in Chennai. It was built over the tomb of Saint Thomas in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers. In 1893, the British rebuilt it as a church with the status of a cathedral. The building we see today is the British version. The British architects adopted a Neo-Gothic style for the construction. The church is one of the only three known churches in the world built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus, the other two being St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral at Galicia in Spain. With its white texture and spires, the Santhome Church stands majestically tall and makes you pause and appreciate its beauty. Built in neo-Gothic style, the church delights every visitor with its naturally lit interiors, rows of wooden pews and striking windows with coloured panes. The main area that is called the nave is quite impressive and holds awe-inspiring chandeliers. Behind the main altar there are stained glass windows depicting St Thomas and other apostles of Jesus Christ. There are two chapels. The main is above the ground and the other is built under the ground. We can find a statue of the revered saint inside a glass case at his final resting place. Every day, pilgrims in large numbers visit the tomb which is decorated with flowers and candles. A museum with important artifacts is a must-visit for the tourists visiting the church. The museum houses the spear or the lance head that was used to kill St Thomas, the great apostle’s fingerprint, an Episcopal chair, two postage stamps, inscriptions of his deeds on stones, the remains of his bones and wall paintings portraying St Thomas’s life and death.

A majestic church with an impressive architecture which is still maintained the way it was in 1896. The cathedral is said to house the tomb of St Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. The spires of the Church are marvellous. The place is maintained really well. The church is located hardly 500 meters from one of the most beautiful and peaceful beaches in Chennai. The beach is just stunning on a moonlit evening and looks like something out of a painting

It was built in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers, over the tomb of Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. In 1893, it was rebuilt as a church with the status of a cathedral by the British. The British version still stands today. Santhome Cathedral Basilica is the palace where the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle situates. It is really a place that gives peace to your mind. The place is neat and clean and provides an atmosphere to pray. It is not a tourist place but a pilgrim centre and when you visit there you have to keep that in mind. But it is open to all and you don't have to pay for the visit of the tomb of St. Thomas.

Beautiful Basilica church build over the tomb of St. Thomas. Located in the heart of Chennai, it's a place of pilgrimage. The Basilica is the main attraction of the place, a very beautiful church, with an attached adoration church which is seen in the left wing of basilica. The glass window on the floor of the basilica gives the view of the cryptic church, which is below the basilica, which contains the tomb of St. Thomas. There is also a museum.

Visiting Santhome Church in Chennai was a truly memorable experience. As we approached the church, we were immediately struck by its stunning architecture and the serene atmosphere that surrounded it. The church's white facade and towering spires are a sight to behold. Inside, the interior of the church was equally impressive, with intricate stained glass windows and beautiful marble altars. The ambiance was peaceful, making it a perfect place for reflection and prayer. One of the highlights of the visit was the tomb of St. Thomas, which is believed to be located within the church. It added a sense of historical significance to the visit and made it a pilgrimage of sorts. The church is located near the beach, and the view of the sea from the church premises added to the overall experience. It's a place where one can not only connect with their faith but also appreciate the cultural and historical richness of Chennai. Overall, our visit to Santhome Church was a spiritually uplifting and culturally enriching experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Chennai.

The Santhome Cathedral Basilica, also known as St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica, is a historic and iconic religious site located in the bustling city of Chennai (formerly known as Madras), Tamil Nadu, India. This Roman Catholic cathedral holds immense historical and religious significance as it is believed to be built on the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. Here is a detailed review of the Santhome Cathedral Basilica: 1. Architectural Marvel: The Santhome Cathedral Basilica boasts stunning neo-Gothic architecture, with its towering spires and intricate stained glass windows. The impressive façade and grandeur of the cathedral are sure to captivate anyone with an appreciation for architecture and history. The church's white exterior stands out against the backdrop of Chennai's urban landscape. 2. Historical Significance: The primary reason for the cathedral's fame is its association with St. Thomas the Apostle, who is believed to have arrived in India in the 1st century AD and established Christianity in the region. According to tradition, he was martyred and buried here, making this site one of the oldest Christian pilgrimage destinations in the world. 3. Spiritual Experience: Visitors are greeted with a serene and contemplative atmosphere as they step inside the cathedral. The interior is adorned with beautiful altars, statues, and paintings that tell the story of St. Thomas and the spread of Christianity in India. The tomb of St. Thomas is located beneath the main altar, and pilgrims often pay their respects here. 4. Religious Services: The Santhome Cathedral Basilica is an active place of worship, and religious services are conducted regularly. Attending a mass here can be a spiritual and cultural experience, allowing visitors to witness local Christian traditions and devotions. 5. Educational Experience: The cathedral also houses a small museum that displays artifacts and relics related to St. Thomas and the history of Christianity in India. This museum offers a fascinating insight into the early Christian presence in the subcontinent. 6. Peaceful Oasis: Despite its location in the heart of a bustling city, the cathedral offers a tranquil retreat for visitors seeking solace and a break from the noise and chaos of urban life. The well-maintained gardens surrounding the cathedral provide a peaceful environment for reflection and meditation. 7. Accessibility: The Santhome Cathedral Basilica is easily accessible from various parts of Chennai, and it is a must-visit for tourists interested in history, religion, or architecture. The cathedral's central location makes it convenient to combine with other tourist attractions in the city.

(Translated by Google) History of money laundering of the Santom Church built to demolish the Shiva temple! Myth: Rs 2.43 crore manipulated from Thomas Church bank account - Another scam amid mysteries! Santom Church is always involved in crime: Since the "Santom Church" was formed from the beginning in the form of aggression, robbery, fraud, forgery, it is often noticed that it is involved in such crimes. The Portuguese demolished the Kabaliswarar temple on the beach in 1535 and built a small house. They added the place of worship and called it "Santom". Later, it became the property of the British. Since independence, Mylapore has been under diocesan administration. Since the 1980s, the temple sculptures, inscriptions, etc. have been removed and rebuilt. At the same time, the then Archbishop Arulappa was embroiled in fraud and lawsuits. Several cases of land fraud are pending against the later Chinnappa (retired Archbishop). The money is in multi-crore accounts at the State Bank of India [MRC Nagar branch of State Bank of India [1]], MRC Nagar, Chennai. There has been little news that a bank employee has laid hands on the money. Complaint in 2016 for fraud in 2014: Branch Manager Mohan (age 57) [2]. The complaint lodged with the Chennai Police Commissioner's Office on 17-09-2016 states [3]: “Raji Basant Rao (54), an employee of our bank branch, misappropriated Rs. 2.43 crore from a customer's account [ 4]. The fraud was committed by forging the customer's signature. I.e. the Basilica of the client St. Thomas Cathedral [St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica] unknowingly forged a customer's signature and stole Rs 2.43 crore from a permanent deposit bank account [6]. One of the most important Church and pilgrim Center in India.Gothic Architecture of church is attractive. There is an underground tomb chapel below the Basilica. The church is built on the tomb of Thomas Jesus's appostle who came to Northern India around 40 AD and touched Cranganore and malabar belt from 52 to 68 AD, finally arrived at Mylapore 68-72 AD where he was martyred in 72 AD. I was awed when I saw a portion of the nearly 2000 years old lance head that pierced Saint Thomas and his bone kept inside a museum along with other antiquities. The tomb chapel also houses a relic of Saint Thomas beside the altar. I felt a rare peace and sanctity whenever I visited this shrine.

Proof - Census of India 1961, Vol. IX, Part XI, writes “It is a historical fact that the Portuguese, who visited India demolished the temple". In November 2006 Pope Benedict XVI had categorically stated that St.Thomas never visited South India. natrunai avathu namasivayave.

San Thome Church, is known as St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica and National Shrine of Saint Thomas, is a Roman Catholic minor basilica in Santhome, in the city of Chennai (Madras), India. It was built in 1523 by Portuguese explorers, over the tomb of Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. In 1896, it was rebuilt by the British. The British style church still stands today. It was designed as Neo-Gothic style, favoured by British architects in the late 19th century. This church is one of the only three known churches in the world built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus, the other two being St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia, Spain. According to Bible Saint Thomas was born in Judea the Roman province. He was one of the twelve disciple of Jesus. He was the one who touched the wound of Jesus after he was risen from his death. Later on in AD 52 he came to Kerala, India to preach about Jesus later on he moved to present-day Chennai. In AD 72 he was killed in St. Thomas Mount and he was buried in Mylapore (presently Santhome) by his disciples and they built a small structural building (church) to mark his tomb. Later on the tomb of St. Thomas was respected and maintained by Muslims and they called the tomb as "Bothuma" (House of Thomas). Santhome Church was built in the style of Gothic revival architecture the late 19th century architecture style. The church has Rib vault ceiling made of teak wood. It was built with 16 windows and 34 stained glass with a main stained glass in altar represent "Saint Thomas Touching The Wound Of Jesus Christ". The statue in main altar indicates "Jesus Christ as Priest and Jesus Christ as King", with both sides the statue of Saint Thomas the Apostle and Saint Peter the Apostle. And there are 14 Stations of the Cross attached at the side wall of Cathedral. The Cathedral was built with materials Teak wood, Marble and Granite. There are two spire in this Church : First spire : acts as bell tower in the left side of Church it is 147 feet tall and it can also be seen from distance. Second spire : was built in the center of the cathedral to indicate the tomb of Saint Thomas the Apostle.

What I like in this sprawling complex is the peace and serenity that prevail. Like ANY CHURCH, THE CLEANLINESS is remarkable. Plenty of open space around the church for ample parking. I visit this church ( though am a Hindu) very often during my morning walks and spend a quiet time and enjoy the peace. Clenliness is next to Godliness is very apat for this church. V. HariHaran.

Santhome Basilica is a Gothic architectural style Church built over the tomb of Saint Thomas, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ. The Church you see now was rebuilt in the year 1890. A small hand bone of the Apostle as well as the head of the lance that was used to attack him are contained within. The statue of Virgin Mary enshrined within the Santhome Basilica Cathedral has come from Portugal. This Church constructed over the chapel in 1890, became a Cathedral under the Archdiocese of Mylapore, Madras. It was elevated to a minor Basilica in the year 1956. The Cathedral was built in the neo Gothic style and contains beautiful stained glass windows depicting the story of St Thomas. Blood soaked earth and the spearhead that martyred St.Thomas is preserved below the Basilica in this basement. The painting of Mother Mary, preserved in the Church Museum was painted by Saint Xavier . You will find the Bishop House nearby. Now that we have covered a bit of its history, we turn our attention to the Church itself now: The long pews of wooden benches well worn by the thousands of pilgrims stand testimony to its rich historical past. The beautiful stained glass windows, the 180 ft steeple, the quiet air conditioned basement housing the relics of Saint Thomas add to the solemnity of this Roman Catholic Church.

It is such a beautiful piece of architecture. You can make a trip down just to enjoy the build of it altar, the church boasts of a plethora multi lingual masses during Sunday. You can always come here and clear your thoughts and converse with God. The evening mass on Sundays in the underground altar is another experience altogether, You can feel all the positive vibrations and rich history this sanctum holds in the hearts of people. Do check out the museum which holds a lot of pretty interesting pieces from the olden days.It is well connected to bus stops and share autos and ride sharing options are plenty making it very accessable.

Visited in week days at morning time. Crowdless, clean and full of peace. Maintained well. Big parking space, but will not accommodate to chennai's crowd when it comes to festival days. The resting place of St. Thomas apostle goes underground, which hits our mind differently. Painted glasses, wooden works are notables. Seats were too good. Definitely visit to get restored your peace of mind.

Saint Thomas Cathedral Basilica is a minor basilica of the Catholic Church in India rebuilt by Portuguese in 1523AD over the tomb of Thomas The Apostle. In 1896 it was renovated by the British in Neo-gothic design. The architecture is truly beautiful. It remains open everyday from 6.00 qm to 9.00 pm. We reached here past 9.30 pm by when it was closed. We requested the security personal and had a round of the place from the outside and captured the outside pictures in pretty artificial illumination and in the backdrop of Moon in some of the pictures. A kind of must see architecture.

Wonderful church that is engraved with the real historical moment that happened during jesus christ and the tomb where they placed Thomas is still neat but the body have already been taken by other countries

Santhome is a beautiful cathedral, one of 3 in the world that is built around the mortal remains of St Thomas, one of Jesus Christ's 12 apostles. The tomb of St Thomas and chapel is part of the Cathedral complex which was built in 1896. The pope has also visited St Thomas's tomb here in Mylapore, Chennai. The other 2 cathedrals are located in Spain (St James) and in Rome (St Peter's). I visited the cathedral at peak hours on Saturday evening when traffic was overflowing. It also rained, further compounding the chaos on the roads leading up to the cathedral. A service in Tamil was going on and I sat on one of the pews absorbing the positive vibrations that are palpable. It's advisable to visit the cathedral in non peak hours so you can take in the surroundings in peace and quiet.

The One and only church in India which was constructed by the disciples of Jesus Christ . Best architecture and ambience was pure holy . The tomb of St.Thomas is the highlight of this church , as it was renovated by the Portuguese with the permission of John 3 of Portugal . The most powerful church .
