The place had cultural show, pieces of art for one to buy, handcrafted jewelry and accessories. A very nice place to educate one about ancient civilization and culture.

Literally translating to “a picture of the south”, DakshinaChitra is a living history museum in Chennai. This museum has 18 houses put together to depict the culture, architecture, craft and lifestyle of all four South Indian states – Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana and Karnataka – via more than 4000 artefacts. A quick trip to 4 states under the same roof? Yes please! If you are looking for places to visit in Chennai with family, then this is the right pick as your children will learn a lot about South India here,

Where architecture becomes a sculpted display. This places houses the multitude of architectural styles from across the south of the country, interspersed with local art and crafts, the artisans and their lifestyles. While the buildings, have been dismantled from their original locations and reassembled for display only; the artisan community very much provides life to the place. There’s art, music and dance; live on display. P.S. Do not forget your sunscreens and hats.

DakshinaChitra is an exciting cross cultural living museum of art, architecture, lifestyles, crafts and performing arts of South India. The main mission is to exhibit, promote and preserve aspects of the broader, more inclusive cultures of the states and to bring these arts to the public in a participative, enjoyable and engaging way. DakshinaChitra Heritage Museum , a project of Madras Craft Foundation an NGO was opened to the public on December 14th 1996. The Museum is located overlooking the Bay of Bengal, at Muttukadu, twenty five kilometers south of Central Chennai, on the East Coast Road to Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, India.   Read more .. DakshinaChitra has a collection of 18 authentic historical houses with contextual exhibitions in each house. All the houses bought and reconstructed at DakshinaChitra had been given for demolition by their owners. The authentic homes in a regional vernacular style are purchased, taken down, transported and reconstructed by artisans ( Stapathis) of the regions from where the houses came

If a person wanted to know about tge culture, tradition of South, he should visit this Museum. It is on the East Coast Road n a nice place tovisit. I casually visited this place without my family and I was amazed. Very clean, neat n well maintained. Definitely taking my family to this place shortly. We, the South Indians, are really rich in our heritage culture n should take steps to nou r ish it stillfurther. It is a calm place n if u want to spend ur time effectively to cheriish our ancesters n their living style u shd come. If you are bringing your lunch, snacks etc as in other theme parks, you are not allowed to carry inside but u can consume in a relaxed manner in the park, etc. Of course there are few stalls, shops who sells eatables. The architecture is really good. Parking is not at all a problem here. A must visit place with family as it wl strengthen the bonding. Shl attach photos during my next visit with family n the time is short now.
