When my flight home got canceled, stranding me in Richmond for a day, I decided to visit the capitol. Spoiler alert: it was awesome! They do free public tours on the hour and the tour guide was phenomenal. It’s a beautiful, landmark historic building and I enjoyed learning the history of both Virginia and its capitol.

Absolutely gorgeous Capitol building, rich in history and architecture. The grounds and building are well maintained. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Most of the building is open to roam. A fun visit.

Virginia state capitol is grand colonial style structure built in 1785 housing the Nations oldest legislative body.the place is under construction, so parking place is not available nearby. We had to park far from the capitol. But we were able to Walk around the capital building. Architecturally, historically rich capitol.

100% recommend visiting the Virginia State Capitol, but make sure you find the entrance! The entrance is on the sidewalk and goes below the Capitol to enter! I visited over a month ago and learned so much, and had an amazing time. The guided tour was fantastic, and my guide was extremely insightful and kind. I did the last tour of the day on a weekday and was only 1/2 people on the tour. 10/10 would go back!

Great tour of a historic building with intriguing art work and statues. Must enter on the West entrance and parking is not close by. Parking is available in and around the Capitol area but will require walking at least a few blocks and likely using a mobile parking app. Walking around the grounds is nice as well and you can see the governor’s mansion.

This place is currently under construction but within 1-2 weeks it should be back open to the public. I know this because I work at the capitol. I think that this place is truly one of a kind and it should be treated with respect.

My TOP TIP: If you have an hour to spare, avail of the free tour on the second floor. This provides a historical context to all the fascinating artifacts, marble sculpture, and architectural details; you get a deeper appreciation of the place. Mrs. Snellings, the tour guide, is a great storyteller and a wealth of information.

Stumbled in to here almost by accident and joined a free guided tour, which I can only say is the best tour I’ve ever done. The guide was a super engaging and friendly woman who was clearly passionate about the subjects. Plus the history of this place! Wow! So much to see here. Absolutely recommend!

It’s an interesting place and you can’t beat the price of free. Worth a quick trip to check the building out.

Beautiful building and historical landmark in downtown Richmond. Worth taking a look even if just to walk around the square. Loved it at night and I’m the day!

There are free tours conducted of inside the Capitol building. Took this one hour long tour and enjoyed every bit of the information that was shared. A chance to see the room where delegates meet to discuss matters was awesome. I recommend this free tour to everyone.

We were able to walk around the capital building grounds, but the capital is still closed to the public. We did see the many statues and other monuments on the grounds while avoiding the construction going on. We hope they open the building soon. You can see the Governor's mansion and the work on the old city hall. It should be magnificent when the remodeling is finished.

Very interesting to see a state capital building that is not built in the typical neoclassical architectural style. It is a little hard to get a good view from the front due to the difference in height from street level to the hill it is built on.

Visited the capitol grounds during our visit to Richmond. The grounds are well kept and clean. It was a bit disappointing to see a big construction site around the capitol itself but overall it's a beautiful area to visit!

Fine tour given by docent Mary Nix! Splendid Xmas trees, decorations, chandeliers and beautiful portraits of Presidents, Governors and more. Rich history! Worth a visit! I had a great tour of the state capitol yesterday at 3pm. A gentleman gave a good history of the area, architecture, delegates, senates, Thomas Jefferson and much more of ancient Virginia! It is a free tour offered every day and it is worth a visit ✨️ 😊

Beautiful grounds and we got to go inside and do a self tour. We wish we could have experienced the guided tour but our timing was off. Such beautiful architecture and very beautifully maintained.

Great to see it the renovation they are doing obscured the outside and had Thomas Jefferson in a box so missed seeing him. Love the history and free tour.👌

I would highly recommend a tour of the Capital whether or not you are a history buff. Our tour guide was a plethora of knowledge who’s presentation made historical details relatable to today. The only disappointment for me was in the rotunda which featured Virginia born Presidents. Notably missing is Joseph Jenkins Roberts, a native of Virginia, who migrated to Liberia as a free black under the American Colonization Society (ACS) project and became the First President of Liberia in 1848. I believe he should be added to the rotunda. Virginia can then boast that nine Presidents have been born in Virginia.

Very disappointed with this visit. I emailed ahead for a tour on my way through Richmond. I was told that free toors are offered on the hour from 10 am to 4 pm with no reservations needed. Parking is nearly impossible to find in the area, but we managed. Downtown was a ghost town on a Saturday, at mid-day. Most restaurants were closed, even the Subway. The capital building is under renovation and the main West face of the building is obscured by scaffolding and a huge mound of dirt. We saw no way in, so we walked the entire perimeter of the building and never found a way in. No special instructions for entering the building were provided when I emailed. The experience was very disappointing, as my time was limited in the capital and I was not able to tour the building, even when contacting ahead of time. The grounds were very nice with multiple sculptures and some flower beds. I managed to get a few pictures that did not include the construction zone.

The state Capitol facade was under renovation, however the East wing entrance was open. There are tours until 3 PM on the half hour. There are informational exhibits and many signs for self guided visitors. I was disappointed that there was only one mention of the confederate Capitol which used to be housed in this building. There was barely any information on the previous Confederate Capitol, and their use of the building. It was disappointing given that the Confederate use of the building as its capitol is such a major part of the buildings history.

The Capitol building is currently under some construction/renovation, but it sounds like it will be worth it in the end. Despite what the website says, they will still be giving tours, but you will need to enter on the left side of the capital. Our guide, Mark, was super knowledgeable and had a binder filled with "before" pictures to share with us. He answered all our questions and was passionate about Virginia's history. He even showed us the very room where they voted to break away from the union. This is a special place that needs to be visited.

Wonderful visit to the Virginia State Capitol. There are guided tours on the hour with the last one at 4 pm. You don't have to take a guided tour but it is more fun. They last about 1.5 hours. The tour (guided or not), consists of the second floor and the third floor in the original part of the building. Assembly is in session in January so things may be different then. Right now the grounds are under construction so it's a bit of a challenge to get into the building as the visitor center is closed. Entry is directly opposite of the visitor center directly into the Capitol wing. Be sure to walk outside to see the monuments on the grounds as well. If you take the pathways, a wheel chair should be able to maneuver up/down the hill.

Made history witnessing the swearing in of a family member. It was a big deal sitting the the seats where bills/laws are introduced, passed, bent and sometimes broken. You get a good sense that those kinds of powers shouldn't be just given to anyone. Congrats to Nadarius Clark- 'Delegate elect of the 79 district'- a top notch individual to show how it should be done.

Don't miss this if you visit Richmond Virginia. We took the Capitol Tour (free). Great look at Richmond history. Marble George Washington statue a must see!

Rafters were in place for the upcoming Governor's Inauguration so the front of the actual capitol was blocked from view. However the grounds are spectacular! For me the most impressive was the giant statue of George Washington, surrounded by fellow founding fathers and statues of the victorious battles of the revolution that led to America's independence from English time. Throughout the ground are progressive statues such as for Women's Suffragette's and a dedication to Thurgood Marshall. Also a spiral pathway with indigenous markers and signs depicting "Green" landscaping too. There is also one Confederate soldier statue near the statue of the founder of the UVA medical school. All in all a truly lovely public park and grounds to stroll through and feel the Virgina history in the air

Definitely worth a visit of this historic capital building (not the most grand I've seen but so much history) and it's free. Make sure you take some time and opt for the guided tour (no charge). There are many historic painting and statues. The life size statue of George Washington is the only only one he actually posed for so it is truly his likeness. Plan to spend anywhere from 1-2 hours.

Inaccurate information on website. Wasted $5 parking and walking over on a 97 degree day only to find that the whole thing is closed for construction. I'm not talking about a unlucky one day event, this thing has not been open from the looks of it for weeks and not for weeks to come

👍👍 This place is huge considering it has a petting zoo/farm for the whole family. Walking around the whole park is great for picnics and great photo settings. The Japanese Gardens are great, colorful, waterfall so refreshing, fish, turtles and cute little bridges to cross. Great photo opportunities.
