Awesome hike for just about anyone! You cannot miss coming here if you are in the Phoenix area. Hiking was a bit scary as we ascended and descended the Hole as it was steep near the top, but we were careful of how we placed our feet on the rocks and did not slip at all. I noticed that many others were confidently climbing in sandals and thongs. A relatively short climb. Nice views of the city and valley. You can see Phoenix and also the airport tower with planes approaching the airport to land. Bring your cameras for great photos. The trail was fairly busy on a Sunday late afternoon. We found parking in the closest lot although every space was full and many people were walking in from other nearby lots. Although the lots are small, we just waited a few minutes for someone to leave as people are always coming and going. Easy in and out, close to the freeways.

Time to kill before a flight? This is a great spot to soak in that last bite of warmth and sun. The walk to the “hole” is very short and easy (not a “hike” I did it in sandals). There are steps carved in to the rocks inside the hole. When you’re done, sit by the water & feed the ducks, take the sidewalk to the edge of 140 acres botanical garden, Desert Botanical. Or drive down the road for a meander though the garden. The Phoenix Zoo is also right here. Great last stop before heading home.

A nice place to hike. Great view from the hill top hole. Hiking to this hill top spot is effortless and can easily hike with family (of all age group). Decent parking space available. If we can pack food and visit, there are few shades to eat out and relax. Can spend some time around the pond after the hike.

What an great place to come and enjoy the day or early evening. Trails are very easy so the kids and those less skilled or ambitious hikers will enjoy it. The views are well worth the trip. We went to watch the sunset and headed up through the hole and found a place to sit. You will need to get there about 30 to 40 minutes early as others are also searching for the same experience. The sunset was simply breath taking. Located close to the Zoo amd Tempe Lake so there are other things to do before and make this your last stop. Well worth the time.

It is a rare thing to talk about Hole in the Rock in the same breath as the other iconic landmarks of Arizona like the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and Antelope Canyon. But I have to to say, Hole in the Rock has a certain undeniable charm, and it is a legit site and destination. Anyone but the most frail and the neonatal, can hike here. Just minutes from downtown Phoenix, this rock formation is easy to get to, easy to climb, and it is free! On the day I went, the moon , me, and the ceiling hole, located in the rear, were in rare cosmic alignment. Ancient people have used the hole to track the sun. For me, it wasn't meant to be. Once done with the hole, there are trails near by for hiking and biking. There is also a lake for fishing, as well as the zoo, and the gardens. Check this place out.

Love love loved this little hike. The Hole in the Rock is so cool to see! The path we took was very easy to get up to the Hole. A little rocky and steep in certain places but super easy. One hundred percent recommend stopping by here if you can!

Great to catch sunset. Get there a little early to hike the short trail and find a spot before the crowd arrives. Perfect view of the sun setting behind the mountains with amazing colors all year. Follow the same entrance to the zoo and take the first left. The road takes you right to the spot. Parking is close and easy to find.

Very easy, short hike up to The Hole In The Rock. We went for sunset so the crowds were insane. Would recommend getting there earlier if you're wanting to watch the sunset so you can get a good spot. Parking wasn't an issue.

Very interesting geology. Well worth a visit. Children who are with responsible adults would love it. There are two paths to get up to the Hole in the Rock. If you go…you pass a few parking lots until you get to the lot closet to the trails. If its full just keep driving a bit further and you will find more parking by restrooms. (I would only use them if you really need to, not very clean)

I loved it. Awesome place to visit. Great views. A short hike up the mountain to the hole. Then you have stairs that’s very helpful going to the other side. It’s definitely worth a trip. Very relaxing.

This is a great park. The hike is moderate only because it's not a lengthy climb. The views are well worth the effort. This is not wheelchair accessible but the view even from the parking and picnic areas is stunning. Saw several families with young kids make the climb just fine. I'm disappointed that some idiots have chosen to desecrate the rock by sticking their gum on it. Shame on you! Respect the beauty of nature so you preserve it for others to enjoy too!

Excellent place to visit when traveling in Arizona. Make sure you check times before you plan your visit. The parking lot nearby can get congested. There are several parking lots in the park and trails to them. This is definitely a photo opportunity. It is enjoyable and relaxing if you like to hike. This is an easy hike even for a beginner.

Cool place to have a picnic. Trails are very easy as well. If you're coming here in August, make sure to have a lot of water with you to stay cool. Parking spots are limited but when we got here, there were plenty of spots to park at. There are no bathrooms that I could find in this specific area so plan ahead. Excellent place to enjoy the view.

What a cool experience. The rock is easily accessible by car. There’s a parking lot nearby, in fact, parking lot is the view you got once you reached the top. There are stairs going all the way up. It’s probably best seen on sunset, but sunset is also the most crowded time of the day.

This attraction was fairly busy and looked daunting from the front. However, there is a trail around either side. There are steps that lead up the path, and some cool photo points. There is also a flat ledge in the hole, so it’s not as steep as it looks. This would be an awesome place to view the sunset but I believe the park closes right around sunset. We stayed about an hour.

Great spot for sunset! It’s an easy walk from the parking lots to around the back of the rock formation that opens up to stunning views. Entry gate closes at 7pm. Will definitely be back!

As the name suggests, there is a big hole in the rock. It's a short hike from the parking lot, not so difficult hike. Once you get on to the top you will end up in the Hole in the rock. It's a nice view from the top through the hole. It is worth the visit.

One of my favorite places in Arizona! A historical Site, right next to the Phoenix zoo. It’s only a 10 mins hike going up and the pictures are breathtaking with beautiful views. They also have a beautiful pond with ducks that you can hang out and take pics. Overall, it’s a great place to visit with family and friends. Catch the beautiful sunset.

Views for sunset were amazing. A lot of people were there though. A short hike to climb the back of the rock, I definitely recommend wearing tennis/hiking shoes. Some places were slippery and people with sandals were struggling.

Hole in the Rock is THE place in town to view the sunset over the mountains. I heard about this location on a podcast about what to see and do in Phoenix. We arrived maybe 30 minutes before sunset and we were lucky to find a parking spot. Parking is free and there are restrooms right outside the lot. I didn't even realize this was a hiking destination, as it's more of a brief walk and trek up to the hole itself. The hole is at the top of a sandstone rock formation that's been affected by erosion. If you want an elevated view, wear shoes with good grip. As it's in town, there's a lot of city views. We saw maybe six plans flying in or out during sunset and all the traffic down below. The colors were gorgeous.

From the top of this unique rock with a hole, you indeed will find a fantastic panoramic view of the city and sunset. It’s safe to hike up and down a rock. Although the park entrance closes at 7 pm, you can stay put till late, yet be mindful of No lights here.

Beautiful area and it's free. We came right at noon so it was really hot which is to be expected but still a beautiful place. Didn't go up to the actual hole unfortunately since one of us is allergic to bees and there was a sign that said the bees are active. Thought it was better to play it safe since we're from out of town and still had a lot more to see. The whole surrounding area is a nice slow drive too.

We loved this location! Easy hike and still great outdoor activity for almost anyone. No need to walk for miles or climb for hours to get a good picture of view. The place wasn’t so crowded either so you just had to wait a little before take a picture with nobody at the background. We recommend to everyone.

Very cool geological formation. Was a bit crowded and busy with tourists in the popular hole area so not many pictures could be taken. Good views of surrounding phoenix, but other peaks have better views in close proximity.

Fun, family friendly activity! Make sure to explore all around Papago Park, the Desert Botanical Garden and Hoke in the rock. Make a day of it! Pack food or eat at Gertrude's! (We packed food, so I am not sure how Gertrude's is but it looked busy)

I recently visited Hole in the Rock at sunrise and it was an incredible experience. The sun was just starting to rise over the horizon, casting a golden glow over the desert landscape. The hole in the rock was perfectly framed by the rising sun, and it was truly a sight to behold. There were only a few other people at Hole in the Rock at sunrise, so I had the place to myself. The only other people were doing trail running at 90 degrees before it turned 115 later on in the day. I was able to hike to the top of the rock and take in the amazing views of the surrounding desert. It was a truly peaceful and serene experience. There a few spots near it but you can also park closer to the Zoo for access. The hike to the top of Hole in the Rock is short and easy, but it can be a bit steep in some places. The best time to visit Hole in the Rock is at sunrise or sunset. The light at these times of day is simply magical! If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable way to experience the beauty of the desert, I highly recommend visiting Hole in the Rock at sunrise. It's a truly magical place.

Great place for a morning or evening walk for beautiful views. This is always a go-to place to take family when they come to visit as you get to see so much of the valley without the workout. Please keep your pets at home at this is a limited space and can cause some issues at the top. Parking directly at the trail head is limited but there is plenty of more parking spaces around this side of the park. Bathrooms are at the next parking lot after the hole in the rock. Not recommended for someone with balance or stair concerns. The trail length one way is less than 5 min and mostly stair type climbing with no hand rails. Same with once you reach the top and enter into the cave. Be careful and watch your step and please always leave no trace

Really amazing and tranquil place. Rich with Native American history. Beautiful park to hike and bike. The rock formations are gorgeous. The colors and textures are just spectacular. I highly recommend coming out for the day and just enjoy the beauty here. Climb up Hole in Rock, walk around the park or just relax and soak in the sun.

This is an easy hike with plenty of parking and fairly easy hiking around the mountainous area. Beautiful views at sunset and a short enough hike that sunset can be enjoyed in the hole and still hike down safely. Can be slick in a couple areas and is often crowded so leave yourself enough time to enjoy the hike. Kids loved the hike as well.

Hole in the rock is about 10 minutes from the parking lot, it’s super cool, glad we did it and we also kept hiking. It was a good day to get some vitamin D, and because we were so close to the zoo and botanical gardens. We’ve just popped over to the botanical gardens. I WOULD RECOMMEND

Such a gorgeous place not far at all from the city! We had just gotten off the plane, had breakfast, & wandered here. From the parking lot it appears the trail is more of a steep climb, but after asking folks that we're heading back to their car they informed us is slowly inclines and wraps around the back of the hole. I saw kids, elderly, & everyone in between, and some dogs all walking around with no issues. Just please bring water & stay hydrated! Once you get to the hole, you do have a little climbing (nothing strenuous) over a ledge and there are stairs to walk down on the other side to sit and enjoy the city & mountain views. The trails go for a bit and all seem to loop back to the lot. Really a beautiful surprise and worth the stop!

Very beautiful view of the Phoenix Zoo, Papago Park, and the surrounding metro area. I have seen family photos and birthday parties take place inside the Holee in the Rock. It takes us about 10 minutes from the parking lot to the viewpoint. Very close to the Desert Botanical Garden, trails, restroom areas, and covered picnic areas.

Fairly easy and short hike (this is coming from inexperienced hikers) to the top. A few things to consider: there is plenty of parking available, no fee, no restrooms/outhouses, and dog friendly. We didn’t see any water stations so make sure to stay hydrated and take enough water.

Nice late afternoon or evening getaway. Ample parking, dogs allowed miles of trails, and a popular sunset watching spot. On a typical evening you can get a beautiful view of the city with a gorgeous glowing sunset sky backdrop! We love visiting this area after long days. Of course, we typically avoid it during the hot summer months. You will not regret visiting this Phoenix jem that's in the heart of the city!

I'll get it 3 stars because the parking is absolutely HORRIBLE. We had to wait about 15 mins for a spot along with 3 other cars. The hike was good but a little scary going up the rocks. This is definitely not for small children once you get to the rocks.

A very popular spot for people to go and take pictures and explore. It can be very busy, but the short hike is very easy and even children can make it to the Hole in the Rock. Great views of the valley.

Masks not worn, even though there were signs stating they were REQUIRED. Trails were in CHAOS, meandering and disrupting wildlife through the park. This showed Arizona’s disrespect for life. No wonder AZ has the highest Covid infection rates.

I love this place. I've been there many times. This time though was very crowded, I didn't climb it this time too many people. I guess the best time to go is during early in the morning

This place is FOC. So no entrance fees, no parking fees. It is easy to access and just took like 10 to 15 minutes to hike from your parking lot till the "hole". There is a walk way behind the rock for you to go all the way till the hole, although some people prefer to climb from the front which a bit dangerous. Just be more cautious while hiking up and down as the small rocks long the way might cause slippery if you miss you step. Difficulty: 2/10 Sunset View: 7/10

I had mixed reviews about whether it was worth it to stop at this place or not on my trip to Phoenix. In the end, I’m glad I followed my intuition and squeezed this in mid day at 114F degrees! Don’t recommend that but it was the only free time we had. From the sign, you wrap around to the right as it curves left. Just follow the trail. Takes less than 10 minutes. I had my mother who’s in her 70s with me and she did it. Just watch your footing. There are steps that take you to the top. It’s much cooler at the top. Soak in all the views from all direction. Take a break and then you’re done! 30 mins minimum but it took us like two hours because there were other people there before and after us that wanted photos and we all had to get out of their camera view. So if you have time, do it. Bring water. I guess there’s a Starbucks near by because a few groups had their iced drinks and just chilled at the top. Have proper shoes but I saw people in flip flops. It’s one of those places where you can say, been there done that. Nothing too memorable besides the hole in the rock.

Nice short, easy walk to top where hole in the rock is. Visited this place after we left the Botanical Gardens. It's in the same area. *****

It was cool to go and watch the sunset behind the Phoenix skyline. You can see the city of Scottsdale and the view of the fishing lakes is pretty nice. It's a very easy hike to get in the hole of the rock. If you feel froggy you can always be ture to the top of the hole. Becareful it's a little slick and steep.

These rocks are really cool how you can climb all over in and through them. When I was there it was during Spring break and the place was packed. It's nice to sit in the shade and look at the city at the city from one of the best advantage points around

Be prepared for a moderate climb. It was a bit crowded with people taking their IG photos and you’ll want water for the hot days! Easy access and parking (all free)

My visit to Hole in the Rock was awesome! It's a unique natural formation in Papago Park. The short and easy trail leads you to a massive rock with a hole you can walk through. It's like nature's doorway. The view from the hole is breathtaking, especially during sunset. You can see the city and beautiful desert landscape. It's a popular spot for photos and a quick hike. The park is well-maintained, and the atmosphere is serene. I enjoyed every moment there, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and picturesque outdoor experience in Phoenix.

Papago hole in the rock is a great place for easy hiking, trail running, or my biking. Tons of beautiful trails and places for photos. Great place to let kids place or even host a family picnic, or just walk your dog. Well worth checking out.

Drive to Hole in the Rock mere 15 minutes before sunset - should have come earlier if only to take it all in for longer. There are a few (free) parking lots along the road leading up to the "trail" head, and we parked at the closest one (surprisingly there was space so close to sunset). The walk up the path was very easy, I was just wearing regular sneakers. There are stone steps leading from the entrance of the hole down to the center, so easy to enter inside as well. From below it looked like there was a big crowd in there and we thought we wouldn't be able to go inside, but upon getting to the entrance we realized the space was bigger than it seemed and there was plenty of room for the 3 of us to find a spot. The further up into the crevasse you go the more slippery it got so we stayed near the middle which still gave us an amazing view as the sun quickly dipped below the horizon. The colors of the clouds were beautiful and changed from minute to minute. We stayed until dark. There's something lovely about a large group of strangers gathered together in an alcove in a rock to watch the sunset.

An easy 0.3 mile park close to the phoenix zoo. A hole in the rock. Always a lot of people. Besides going to the hole , one can climb to the top One can walk around the rock. Plenty of parking

Neat attraction. Pretty easy hike up to the first hike in the rock. There are other parties to climb up to the very top, but not for the faint of heart.

Visited once when we took kids to the zoo nearby, but it’s becoming dark. so when we back from vegas/canyon, considering other lookouts needs hiking and we had a 3 year old girl, we decided to give it second chance. so we visited here again. this time the timing was perfect, we went up from another side and waited half an hour for the sunset. Same crowded. Took some pictures, but the sunset was instant and not impressive maybe because of the latitude. People applauded and cheered “one more”. If you want pictures without strangers as background, come at different times.
