Arizona is replete with hiking trails and the hike on the Mormon Trail does not disappoint. The parking and entrance to the trail is at the very end of 24th street. Just keep going south till the very end. Parking is limited to maybe 30 cars, so go early. The trail itself is picturesque and pristine. No garbage, no wrappers, or empty bottles in site (no graffiti too). The trail, which is moderate in difficulty, is paved in solid stone so feeling secure is not an issue. Just be aware, the moment you get on the trail it goes vertical. Your knees will be pumping, a definite workout for sure. Your ankles, as well, will be working out trying to keep you stable. If you are a lifelong couch commando or a 9 to 5 desk jockey, this is the perfect trail for you. If you can walk, you can do this trail. I've seen kids scamper up here, as well as older adults chugging along like mountain goats. This is my new favorite trail, and I can't wait to come back to Phoenix and hike here again. Check this place out!

Nice trail up hill with lots of loose rocks. Rated moderate trail and has some great vistas of the whole valley. Recommend some walking sticks for older people. As suggested, bring some water and best to hike with someone. The parking lot was full of cars. Check times when busy and best to go.

A great easy hike and a great way to spend a morning. Even at a slow pace you shouldn't need more than 3 hours. The path is well marked and there are many people on the weekends. The cellphone coverage is even pretty good for most of the hike hike those who are paranoid ( it's hard to get lost on this one) . 5 star hike for beginners with a neat natural tunnel (it's in the name) for you to see.

First time hiking this trail at South mountain, it was a nice day, and the hike wasn't too bad. Pretty short hike up and down. Awesome views. The scenery was amazing. Cool spots if you like taking pictures. Dog friendly, we took our pups too and they loved it. As always make sure you follow trail rules and don't forget to stay hydrated. There's a small parking lot but also a lot of parking on the street.

Wear very comfy shoes, water and light weight clothes is a must. Go early(6am). Parking space is limited but there's parking outside the entrance(near the houses). The hike was about 2hrs(with occasional rest stops). There's a lot of big stairs-like rocks(incline). We had a group of 5 adults. I saw a few pups on the trail, bicyclists, pre-teens,elderly. It's all mental, believe you can and you will get to the top. This trail is a step up compared to 19th ave/south Mt. trail.

There was ample parking when we arrived mid Sunday afternoon. It was hot and without much of a breeze. I thought we brought too much water but it ended up being just enough. The trail never is overly steep but it maintains an uphill trajectory for the majority of the way up to the Tunnel (our destination). We stopped plenty of times in shady areas to cool off and hydrate and let our chihuahua puppy catch his breath. It took us about 1.5 hours to make the trek there and only about 30 minutes to make the return trip to the parking lot. Loved the views. Loved how the trail alternates between rocky and sand smooth.

Great moderate hike up to Fat Man's pass. Awesome view of the city and not too difficult to bring the kids and dogs along. Pretty popular trail and lots of Boulders and Views to explore.

Beautiful simple trail. Very easy to see where you are going. Fun boulders to check out along the path. Definitely Rocky for anyone not used to Arizona trails.

Great trail with beautiful views of the mountain and Phoenix. At times can be hard to find the trail. The Hidden Valley trail is especially difficult to guide through. Recommend 3 hours. However within 2 hours you can see the Mormon Peak and the cool entrance is Hidden Valley. If you only have 2 hours it’s still a great hike

This trailhead is part of the south mountain region. The climb is steep but it isn't difficult. We had to stop to catch our breath a few times. You get a beautiful view of the city of Phoenix as you get higher and higher. Lots of beautiful saguaros and other desert plants. We spent about 90 minutes hiking, but we didn't get all the way to the top. We saw several people walking their dogs, and the dogs seem to be enjoying themselves! Parking is free.

A super fun but long hike for a family who has no experience hiking. We took the Mormon trail to get to the hidden valley and back which was PERFECT! Definitely a more rocky hike but we loved seeing the saguaro cactus everywhere! The Mormon trail is definitely an uphill hike and it felt very long to get to fat man’s pass. 100% continue straight on the Maricopa path to get to fat man’s pass, so that you can go downhill on the rock areas of hidden valley to slide instead of having to climb them. Since it’s a loop, that way is much more fun!! So take the Mormon trail, continue straight on maricopa to reach fat mans(don’t go left), and take hidden valley to circle back. You won’t regret it!!

I'm new to this area and this is the second hiking trail I've checked out. I got to the parking lot around 5:30am on a Monday morning and there were about 3 other cars there already. No bathrooms at the start of the trail just so you're aware. The first mile or so is all uphill but while hiking doesn't feel too strenuous if you take it slow. I was hoping to run some of the trail and after the initial incline there were some flatter areas that were easier to run. The sunrise and scenery were gorgeous. I got slightly lost for maybe 5 minutes as I am getting used to the trail signage in Phoenix, but quickly found people and the trail again. The loop I did ended up being around 4 miles altogether and took about an hour and a half.

Hiked the Hidden Valley trail starting from this trailhead. We came around 7 AM on a Wednesday and there were still plenty of parking. The hike was gorgeous, and I appreciate that it’s so close to the city. The hike consisted of walking on big sturdy rocks and boulders with a gentle incline. My running shoes did a great job with getting me through the hike in one piece. We ran out of time so I didn’t get to the top loop and back, but the journey was serving great views throughout.

I'm out of shape at the moment and this trail was a little difficult for me, but doable. I was able to get quite a few good pics. Did see a scorpion on the way down after sunset. Pretty cool trail and would recommend

This is such a great hidden gem. We had never been to South mountain and I'm so glad we choose this trail as our first. We started at 5:15am and the cool shade was fantastic. We hiked up to the natural tunnel, then through the hidden valley, and out (around) fat man's pass. We had such an amazing time. There are mountain bikers, which we've never encountered before while hiking. But everyone was super respectful. We can't wait to go back!

I really enjoyed this hike though. It’s so much treacherous with all of the rattlesnakes on the surrounding rocks. I highly recommend making sure that you check around yourself before sitting down. I also recommend coming to the lake fairly early in the morning because as the day gets warmer, the sun becomes really blaring.

One of the most fun trails in the Phoenix area (although granted, there are a lot of fun trails in the area). The combination of rocky, extraterrestrial like look of the hidden valley, the unique points of passage and spectacular views of Phoenix make this trail a pleasure every time I explore it!

The scenery was amazing, the hike was manageable by young and old alike. We came across people from all walks of life and shared useful tips. Whoever said the desert is lifeless should really look hard.

Great hike with a moderate start as the beginning is pretty much a vertical hike. Once you get to the junction with the National trail it flattens out so continue on to hidden valley as it's worth it. Took us 2 hours to complete, would recommend an early start to beat the heat for the start.

Great moderate to intermediate hiking trail, easy to find and parking wasn't bad. Spectacular views, interesting rock formations, and some wildlife. It is surprisingly peaceful and quiet; you can climb Morning Trailhead and forget the urban jungle below. Consider going early in the day. There is not much shade.

I liked this place a lot. It does not have any ticket price, so its cheap. It has parking but we went around 7pm in may and it did not allow, so we had to park in the neighborhood. Fortunately, we did not go there on weekends and so it was not crowded. Trail track is very fascinating but the view that you will get from the car when approaching it, its the best, according to me. But i was navigating the map, my husband was driving , we were only two of us, so i could not capture a picture of it.

Such an amazing hike, with breathtaking views. The ruins were fun to explore. There were fun trails that allow you to do some climbing. Also, very impressed with how clean the trail was! I didn't have to pick up any trash. Although there were a few doggie landmines people left behind. Can't wait to go again soon!

Great Trail - has a decent acent/incline all the way up with twists & turns on the way up. Beautiful views and some rocks to climb up to sit and relax. Parking lot is a little smaller, maybe 20-30 cars, "no parking" signs posted outside of the lot along the road. Arrived in the evening around 4pm for the hike and only did about an hour. Many people had kids, dogs, etc. so it seemed suitable for all ages.

Very fun trail with great views of Phoenix! This is NOT an easy trail, and there is limited parking so plan accordingly! Also- I did see lots of bikers but honestly I wouldn’t recommend biking this trail unless you’re ready to haul your bike up the steep & winding trail for at least a solid 40 minutes before you can bike… For hikers though- this is awesome! I will definitely be taking my visitors here for the scenic views- and the tunnel on hidden valley trail is so cool!!

Great workout! It's 5 miles parking lot to Hidden Valley loop, around loop, and back down to parking lot. Great views, nice sunset hike. Bring shoes for lots of rocks, and poles help your lower back and balance. The mile up is mostly leg work and rocks. The loop is my favoritepart, with a cool cave and gaps in rocks to navigate under, over, through and around.

Right now (March) This is such a beautiful trail to visit. There are beautiful wildflowers in bloom, cute little quail running around, and this is just a great place to take a timeout from daily life to go on a beautiful hike that's pretty easy to complete in about an hour

One if my favorite trailheads on s mtn but very busy now on weekends. Recommend a weekday early hike to be safe and have a great hike! The trail has lots of resting areas on way up and points of interest with great views. In Feb and March wildflowers are great!

Honestly this has to be one of my favorite trails, I like to go quite often... It's beautiful and too me, with a zoo like feel at parts. I have seen coyotes and pups come out and start howling. I have encountered some rattlesnakes on this trail twice but none as of lately. This trail also takes you to Hidden Tunnel and FatBoy entry which is well worth the walk all the way pass the top.. I recommend rock jumping if you make it back by the tunnel. It's fun. Moromon Trail is a great trail that leads to options to explore. Most of the time the people are nice on this trail. It has been kind of crowded as lately. But get to it and don't forget the water.

This is a fun day hike! We took our 6 year old up, and while it is steep at times, she did great! There is a rock tunnel about a mile and a half up which is very cool! A great spot to rock climb and explore!

Great hiking trails. Amazing view. Very clean. No trash to be seen. It's a rocky climb and a good workout if you're less than fit like myself. The people were also very courteous while allowing other hikers to pass on narrow parts of the trail.

A mixture of intermediate and hard for this trail. During summer, go before the sun is up, as it gets extremely hot! Take more than enough water. I did Hidden Valley via Mormon Trail, which is a little under 3.8 miles RT. You get to Fat Man’s Pass and—of course, hidden valley caves. This is a great hike in escalation, as you get sunrise views and a glimpse of Four Peaks. Officially, one of my favorites. IG @ hikingthisplanet

I just moved near here. Go hike somewhere else, LOL. This is a great hike, very steep with beautiful rock formations. Prettier than the trails on the east side in Chandler.
