Well worth a visit, while in Tempe, Arizona! Admission is FREE and they even validate parking. There is place to donate at check in, but it.is strictly voluntary. The museum currently has 3 exhibits. Parking is convenient and staff were beyond helpful !

It's a bit of a drive out from the city. Driving in, from the main street, you turn onto this side road that passes through a gate (feels like a scene from Jurassic Park, sorta). There was plenty of parking and plenty of shade to keep your car cool. Walking into the museum, I passed by the front desk. Didn't noticed the bad service that some of the reviews mentioned. The front desk lady was helpful in giving me a map and explaining the layout of the museum- it has an indoor area and then a quarter mile trail outside. I spent a little over an hour to explore. Indoors: There were a bunch of text-heavy posters about the Indians and the area. Then, there were about 2 or 3 glass enclosed displays of historic tools and pottery in the front and then 2 or 3 more of those toward the back. In some, it was pointed out that the items were only replicas... There was also a small room with some photos of the area, and then also a kids area with some fun books to read. There just really wasn't much to see... Outdoors: The trail has some labels for the vegetation. I could also see the modern day houses in clear view on the side of the trail, so it made it feel not very authentic and historic. I liked the piles of rocks which make up a hill, but I did not see any petroglyphs. Maybe they just weren't well marked (?). The trail was mostly winding past those piles of rocks, a children's digging area, and nothing else. There were two or three signings explaining the sights. I also noticed a part where the trail branched off and there was a bridge the spanned over very brackish brown water, and for some reason they had placed picnic tables on the bank- not a good spot for picnics... Overall, it's a small but decent musuem.

Could have more exibits. Small area for kids to paint, color or read behind the welcome desk. No bags allowed, so beware before going. 3 stories but everything is so spaced out. Quick to walk thru, and I'm glad its free. I wouldn't pay to go if it wasnt.

The building itself is a uniquely designed, brutalist structure, but the contents inside are a bit disappointing. The two staff members at the entrance were very polite, but it’s currently just 3 small exhibits. One very small room on the bottom floor focusing on Japanese pottery, and the 2nd and 3rd floor are dedicated to a Lucha Libre exhibit; however it’s sparse with little historical information about the Luchas. Parking is free (they validate), but I honestly would not recommend visiting given the small amount of exhibits to see. They are working on 3 out of the 6 exhibit areas so perhaps in the future it will be more enjoyable, but currently is is not.

Highly recommend a visit to this unique museum. It feels like you are descending into a stone pyramid, the architecture is just as much of the draw as the artwork inside. Be sure to walk upstairs to view the rest of the building from all sides.

Fantastic and diverse collection of contemporary art housed in striking Brutalist concrete architecture. The museum itself is a real masterpiece, its sharp geometric lines and forms softened by elements of Egyptian pyramids, human engagement with the different levels of galleries and sculpture courts, comfortable seating areas, and superb lighting both in galleries and the skillfully use of skylights and windows.

Beautiful architecture, a strange mix between a communist/dystopian vibe with a modern and inviting twist. Lots of angular lines made from concrete and steel. Really cool structure. Inside are a handful of large and open galleries, which rotate to feature a wide variety of exhibits. They even have community and kid-friendly events allowing folks to get crafty and engage. No outside water allowed, for you hydroflask toting folks out there. Just a heads up.

Really quiet and calm, the art was a bit sparse but pretty interesting. I'm sure it depends on the exhibit that's there. The outside area is nice and quiet, a good place to sit and study.

Free and interesting. Not a super extensive collection but definitely worth your time. They have a huge collection of prints students can use for research too, so it's a great resource if you need to see/use in person art for a class.

Great place to take kids to learn a bit of ancient local history! Lots of interesting information for both kids and adults. Walk is short and best in the morning, kids are given a map and paper to track which petroglyphs they see along the way.

Fun short, easy walk through a desert scene with labeled plant life until you come upon the petroglyph areas. Some stunning views through pipe placement. Takes some time to see lots of them...you could be there for hours! Nice, fun, unusual stop.

Wouldn't call this a fun place to go but it is certainly diverting and educational. It is very interesting. They have students and faculty from the University there to answer questions. They have a lovely gift shop too. I wouldn't go there in the summer fir two reasons: the trail to see the petroglyphs is VERY hot, no shade at all, and their hours are very abbreviated. Go in the winter or spring.

I love this museum. It is the perfect size to see in a few hours. My favorite are the works by Koontz. Everything is different, some is provocative, and everything is unique. Having been to to other fine or historical art museums in LA, this was my first taste at modern art. The exhibits show you the wide range of styles, and the placards really helped give me a sense of history and importance of these works.

At least as much an anti-Western Civ, anti-American wokester propaganda display as it is an art museum. The architecture of the building is intriguing. And the air-conditioning was on, which might be incongruent with the themes on display.

I have been going to the ASU Art Museum since 1998. While they have changed the layout a bit over the years, I always enjoy visiting. I like the permanent display of wood turned items. I do hope they bring the permanent art collection back that was on the 2nd level, but I understand they probably wanted to make more room for their rotating/visiting installations. I enjoy when they have exhibits in the sculpture patios on the upper levels. It's nice to go outside and enjoy art in the outdoors. With COVID, we haven't had the opportunity to go, but they used to have nice activities on the 1st level that the kids good do (make sun catchers, and other crafts).

The museum is turning almost all of their exhibits. Later on this month the museum will have some outstanding art exhibits reflecting some prominent and contemporary themes that will resonate with visitors. I'm looking forward to returning later this spring to see all that's new.

Represented are the many who are repressed. Always welcomed. To continue this narrative, shall we begin the inclusion of pieces created by those with mental health challenges? Curating art depicting the confusing, terrifying and handicapping inner facets of a broken mind, will aid in alleviating the stigma suffered by those with such challenges. This genre is at the same time, provocative, disturbing, and beautiful. Shall we give a voice to this population as well?

As many others said, the building/architecture looks very interesting. I’m not familiar with the brutalist style; instead, I see design elements that resemble Mayan pyramids and a nearby building may be mimicking the Coliseum in Rome :) Oh, I agree that the exhibits themselves are somewhat underwhelming but, with free parking, the place is worth visiting, even if it’s only for the building itself.

Small university museum. There are about 5 galleries in there. Free admission. The building is nice, with unique architecture. Showing more identity kind of exhibits - like Indian tribes, or Mexican heritage. The student staff is super nice. Great place to just chill and cozy up in the heat of Phoenix

The ASU Art Museum is a dynamic museum which provides not only a permanent gallery and pottery collection, but ever-changing exhibits reflecting current artists, political events, reflections on past artists, etc. I make a point of coming to this museum multiple times a year and I see something new each time I go. The architecture of the building is as fascinating as the exhibits are. You will not be disappointed.

Friendly staff , exhibit specialists are kind and insightful as well. The exhibits offer a diverse range of objects to adore and amuse over. I'm very pleased with the selection that vary every few months! They are very thought-provoking. They say art is subjective, beauty is in the eye of the beholder , and that art knows no boundaries. I would say that art is the calm recollection of passion. If you are on the Tempe ASU campus , or even on Mill Ave in downtown Tempe, stop on by if you have an hour or two to spare! Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated.

A bit too political for my taste.

  • 2/5 Douglas S. 5 years ago on Google
The collection here was rather sparse, and what was there struggled to fit the definition of what I would call "art". Art in my definition conveys beauty, purpose, meaning and hope. As is typical nowadays, this is a postmodern art museum where these values are lost. There is an interesting exhibit of Latin American art, and I found the Brazilian political cartoons and newspapers in Portuguese interesting. The theme was the hopelessness of the poverty in Haiti and in Rio de Janeiro, and the value conveyed was that of shock and anger, but no solution is presented.

Incredible building, but the number of exhibits was a little bit of a let down, honestly. It may be partially due to coronavirus, but there wasn’t a lot there, compared to other university museums I’ve seen. But the structure itself is beautiful.

I would like to especially acknowledge the staff for having such positive attitudes on a busy day. I know big crowds and impatient customers can be overwhelming, so I greatly appreciated their professionalism. Joshua, David, Gino and Jamir (I think there was one or two more staff members? I'm sorry I didn't catch their names). Either way they all were super friendly and helpful, even with all the long lines and pushing people.

Came here with my mom, we loved it! The more you look, the more you see, and it was almost a game trying to spot the drawings. The space is fantastic and I loved that there wasn't much to the outdoor space, just being in the natural setting was fabulous. Yes it's sunny, yes it may be warm, but what else would you expect. I'd love to come back because I guess that in a different light different Petroglyphs would be visible. Very friendly staff and a cute kids space too.

Everything was so beautiful, you can see the beginning of plants ready to sprout, the sacred areas preserved, so awesome. It is a nice short trail, easy to see everything. So peaceful, so serene.

  • 5/5 K B. 6 years ago on Google
Very neat! The mini-walk to the petroglyphs is interesting and well-thought-out, not to mention level and flat if you have mobility issues. This site was very interesting and the kids really enjoyed it. It was priced just right. Definitely something fun to do. My ten-year-old girl was fascinated. My seven-year-old boy found it interesting and he was able to comprehend what the petroglyphs were. He really enjoyed trying to find them on the rocks. The site has created a petroglyph scavenger hunt for some of the more prominent petroglyphs. The scavenger hunt print-out they give the kids could use a little cleaning up (to make it more legible and more organized in appearance) but my kids enjoyed it nonetheless, as did the adults. Great job!

I appreciate ASU and other contributors stepping up to help preserve the petroglyphs, but there is not a lot to see on this very short hike that you can't see in other places around the valley for free. The building that houses the museum is pretty cool, but not worth the cost of entrance, which was $9, --we got in for free on the Phoenix Library cultural pass. The history of the valley is important to me, but for some reason this seems forced.

Easy quarter mile walk to a rather small area with Petroglyphs. The petroglyphs here are chipped into volcanic rock so they're a little more difficult to see than other areas where petroglyphs are made by chipping away desert varnish. The museum is very nice with informative displays. Friendly staff & docents. Very close to the city - you don't have to go far to see ancient rock art.

@asuartmuseum as my 10th visit to university museums in The United States 🇺🇸 during my Fulbright research of audience engagement in US university museums. And as always - I am amazed! There are several elements which I really appreciate, starting with very welcoming staff at the front desk and the question ,,Have you been here before” - this is something I have never heard in the Czech/ European university museums and it is such a pity. Just from the reactions of the visitors you can say they really appreciate saying it’s their first time so they need a proper navigation to truly enjoy the museum. The quality of exhibition design invites you to become part of it by using different media and interactive elements. Except of the participative stations within exhibitions, you can wrap up and reflect on your experience in a workshop room, where you can either just relax and read some books or follow workshop activities connected to the content of the museum exhibitions and collection. Last but not least you can find a meditation iPads with different exercises to calm your mind and become more aware of your emotions. The museum offers plenty of places to sit down, relax and reflect on what you just saw - indoors but also outdoors as they invite you to the terrace filled with sculptures and seating places! What an experience! Thank you Check out my research and findings at the instagram account @universitygalleries

I enjoyed the building itself and the pixel screen at the entrance was beyond amazing! The current exhibits were okay but not much popped out but that's art and tastes varies. I did find a few exhibits with interesting pieces

Great, local museum with revolving exhibits. Loved the kid-friendly activity area offered. Free admission and great place to beat the heat for a few hours.

This was a great spot to pass time for a few minutes. When we went there was a whole lot of exhibits closed down- which really sucked. Made the entire experience really short. We spent most of our time making paper cactus. Can’t complain too much because it was in fact FREE. Also, parking is free if you show them your license plate number, if not you can possibly get towed and pay. Overall, I would want to come back when they have more to see. Very quiet and not much to see here this time around. 6/10

Thought provoking exhibits. Some of them are interactive. There are also some posters you can take home for free. It's small so it's a quick visit. I wouldn't drive exclusively to visit it but it's great if you are already nearby since it's free.

I was expecting a little more but still cool for a free art exhibit. The fuzzy experience was a little odd for me and the child lol

Really well curated art museum. Entry fee is by donation and they are constantly rotating the galleries so there's almost always something new to see. I great casual way to add a little fine art to your day!
