This hotel was the best stay I've ever had in Michigan, and one of the top 5 of my life. Everywhere I turned, the design was beautiful, the staff was genuinely hospitable, & the food was absolutely to die for. I know I'll be making excuses to return again and again. I've just checked out from my stay and I've been raving about my experience to anyone who will listen! I have a food allergy and the staff when above and beyond to kindly assist me with menu selections. I've never been so well taken care of in a restaurant, and I was absolutely floored by the craftsmanship and unique meld of flavors in each dish. Every request I made was promptly and courteously handled, and there were personal touches at every turn. I've stayed at other comparable hotels downtown Detroit, and I can say with confidence that the Foundation is the only place I'll stay from now on!

I stayed here on a Friday night to go to a concert and the service, ambience, and room were all a 10/10. We had a standard 2 queen and it still felt like a luxury suite. The bathroom was incredible. Tons of storage, mirrors, and lovely “Detroit” touches in the room. The hotel’s complimentary Lincoln car took us to the concert so we didn’t have to Uber. It was amazing. I wouldn’t stay anywhere else downtown or in the Detroit area!

We used The Detroit Foundation for our wedding block for guests to book for our March wedding. All of our guests were extremely impressed with the hotel (from the decor, The Apparatus Room, hospitality of all hotel staff). We also stayed in The Commissioner Suite (absolutely gorgeous) the weekend of our wedding and it was amazing. The staff is beyond accommodating and always happy to help. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking to just stay downtown (great location) or hosting your wedding guests. Loved it so much!!

Beautiful hotel - clean, comfortable rooms. Unfortunately there were a few areas where the hotel fell short of our expectations. Terribly slow service in the Apparatus Room and no ability to purchase a bottle of wine for the room. The only options were extremely overpriced 1/2 bottles in the mini bar. Also no alcohol available to be ordered via room service before 5pm. No coffee maker in the room, strange for such a nice hotel. Room service menu states drip coffee is free of charge, however we were charged a fee since we ordered a pot of coffee. Not a problem, however we waited over an hour for our order. We had higher hopes for the amenities and service here.

Incredible design and great service. The restaurant and bar, Apparatus Room was delicious and beautiful. I was mesmerized by the lighting over the bar while I sipped my yummy cocktail. There were items in the mini bar that were made in Detroit or Michigan and books to help you explore the city.

Loved our stay at the Foundation Hotel. Rooms/beds were comfortable and had everything we needed. The bathroom toiletries were Grown Alchemist which was a lovely luxe surprise. Danielle at the front desk was so empathetic and helpful when I needed directions and local advice. Fitness center is beautiful and there are computers for use. Room service breakfast was terrific and extremely reasonably priced. Would definitely return!

Stayed here for the labor day weekend and this hotel was definitely NOT worth the money I spent ($760) for 3 nights. The location is okay but not near that many attractions or good restaurant. It was near the Detroit riverwalk so that was a plus. The restaurant inside the hotel is nice but although I was a guest at the hotel, I still could not book a reservation. My room was small and not that aesthetically pleasing. I wasn't going to write a review at first but PLEASE do not be fooled by all these good reviews. I will say that the complimentary bike to ride was a nice idea. You can find a nicer hotel to stay at for less $ and better service.

Booked the hotel for my wedding and bachelorette dinner. I was approved for photos before booking and day of by staff. Food took over an hour to be severed at Apparatus and my daughter was good poisoned by the under cooked chicken served! The day of the wedding while in my full wedding gown starting to take photos heading out of the hotel, an employee I never seen ran up to the photographers asking if we have permission to take photos in the hotel. We said yes but she proceeded to force us to stop even after I explained I am a guest and had permission before and after booking. Incredibly unprofessional, didn't verify anything and very rude. Even the other employees at the hotel tried approaching her and she ignored them. Very unique hotel but you ruined a beautiful and irreplaceable moment! You have to do better than this. Don't eat or plan any special events here if you want good health or positive memories!

The room is very nice and comfortable, and the hotel is beautiful. The decor is very fitting of the former Detroit Fire Dept. HQ and has a nice nod to the historical significance of the building. It’s clean, but like the restaurant, it needs a little bit more management attention to detail to be exceptional. Housekeeping is by request, which is OK if the rate reflects the lower level of service, but my rate did not. If they are going to charge full service market rates, they need to provide a full service experience. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel for travelers attending a conference at the convention center, as it’s very convenient.

The Detroit Foundation Hotel is an absolute great stay. The rooms are new and really beautiful. The aesthetics throughout the whole hotel are very chic and relaxing. Our time was quiet and comfortable despite being a holiday weekend. The staff were extremely kind and accommodating, even allowing us a very late checkout so we could kill some time before our flight. The room service and bar downstairs were equally high quality. Even the hotel gym was exceptional, especially compared to others I have found myself in. The location is perfect and anything in downtown Detroit is walkable. Overall, I would highly recommend a stay at the Detroit Foundation Hotel for any trip to the city. You might pay a little more than a generic chain hotel, but it’s well worth it for the comfort and style.

Lovely hotel in the heart of downtown Detroit. Great history at the old Fort Pontchartrain site. Nicely appointed- urban cellars breakfast buffet a good deal at $14 /person. Clean, quiet, with friendly and attentive staff. Only thing missing was decaf coffee. In the US I have not been at a hotel that did not carry decaf in the breakfast area. Beyond that small imperfection the hotel is wonderful.

First time staying at the Detroit Foundation Hotel. We had an absolutely amazing stay the staff was incredible. The building is stunning. Our room was immaculate the valet offered exceptional service. We will definitely be returning for future stays next time we are in Detroit thank you for a wonderful stay

The rooms are so cool! I love the Decour! They did an awesome job from the layout of the room to the small accents. The staff are so sweet and kind. I love this place…..

Great location, neat decor. Historic items on display. Super comfy room - very very very quiet, which was amazing. Wish room was a bit bigger so that when a friend stopped by there was more room to sit, but overall it was great. Loved the big shower! Water Pressure was amazing. This is the nicest hotel I've stayed at in the D, and I've stayed at 10 or so. Will 100% be checking in again.

Clean room, beautiful bar, welcoming staff and food was great too. Valet service is also available for parking. Nice location as it has few nice coffee shops and bars within walking distance. The whole building looked majestic. Upper management were extremely supportive in valuing customer experience.

Almost perfect, but two big misses, each worth a whole star according to my scientific calculation. First, what was good: the location is fantastic, the building is absolutely beautiful. One of the best restaurants and cocktail bars in the city shares the building. The rooms are spacious and well outfitted. The bathrooms are gorgeous. The king size bed was extremely comfortable. Blackout curtains, soft sheets, beautiful architectural details, good HVAC. Like I said, this room is almost perfect. So why did it lose two stars: 1. the mini fridge had a temperature display that was almost as bright as the sun, which could not be turned off unless you unplug the fridge. Even with the blackout curtains, this room had a bright blue glow all night long, pointed directly at the bed. 2. The shower head in the bathroom was among the strangest I've ever seen, and completely unusuable. This thing had a grand total of 9 holes for water to come out, and boyhowdy did the water come out. Very fitting with the firehouse theme, as it felt like I was being sprayed by a firehose. I decided to forgo the shower until I got home later that day. These two issues could probably be solved for under $400 per room, and then this is a pure five star hotel.

Can't say enough how impressed we were with this place. They managed the perfect mix between keeping the charm of the old building but adding modern finishes and conveniences. My wife said her Paloma was the best she had. And the brunch in the morning was seriously good. We'll definitely stay there again and we'll absolutely eat there again.

The place looks great the atmosphere feels great. The restaurant pricing is ridiculous not only is it ala carte you pay so much money for so little, that's not even funny... I ordered the roast the roast was literally two to three bites with some mushrooms and something else and water and the price came back it over $40 once you have to include a low level tip by all means go to another restaurant like the Whitney I also has spectacular atmosphere and the food value is at least 20 times greater... You will starve to death here due to the fact that the portions are just absurd they really need to rethink this... Everyone wants to make a profit but to take advantage of people like this, it's just wrong.

Our second stay at the DFH in < 2 years. What a treat! Great access, rooms and restaurant! We will be back! Valet parking was easy and even in only 2 night visit - Rif was super at helping us get in and out! Thx to all!!! Rich and Barb

This hotel is quite the gem in Downtown Detroit. So refreshing to see true full service boutique hotels absolutely thriving! The service levels in this hotel are outstanding. And the cuisine in The Apparatus Room is second to none in the area. The hotel itself is rustic modern, built into the former fire headquarters building in Detroit. Just stunning!

Stayed here for a business trip. Beautiful hotel, friendly staff, spacious rooms and the bath care line smells amazing. The Apparatus Bar in the bottom has lighting to die for. Will definitely make this my go to Hotel when coming again.

Slam dunk! Spacious, clean, stylish, comfortable rooms. Every moment of service from valet, waiters, bartenders, and lobby were consitanly spectacular. Also, The restaurant attached to the hotel was one of the best meals I’ve ever had in my life (and I am a pretty seasoned world traveler). Ultimately, this hotel is top notch In classic Detroit charm and class with a modern edge. I can’t say enough great things about my overall experience.

Excellent location. Valet service was efficient and excellent. Our room was ready early, which was such a perk. The attention to detail was absolutely spectacular. Even the elevator walls were elegant. The bed was comfortable, the room was stylish. The front desk was welcoming and kind. We loved breakfast at the Apparatus Room. I sincerely cannot wait to stay at this hotel again. What a treat.

Great hotel with a retro look. Comfortable rooms and very, very helpful front office staff such as John and Ann. The valet service is fast and very efficient. Abdullah provided us 5 star service.

The Foundation hotel is stunning. They have done a remarkable job creating a unique but hugely functional hotel stay. The reception staff were fantastic, charming, helpful and welcoming. The place is spotless - and bright. The room was exceptional. Spacious, functional, with a work area, bedside USB, a wonderful bathroom with oversized showers, really exceptional black out blinds for those of us who like dark rooms for sleeping - just an exceptional stay experience. The bed was wonderful, with great sheets and pillows… quite perfect. I have stayed in many “boutique” hotels and often they come with compromise. But not Detroit Foundation Hotel. It’s quite perfect (and with a great gym). And when we left, the front desk and Abdullah the valet were awesome. I highly recommend (5/5). Here are a couple of things that could improve: - coffee in the rooms. Almost everybody does now and it was painful to go to the restaurant to get a morning coffee. - the Apparatus Room is fantastic and visually stunning. The food and management is still getting its feet I’d say. You would be better to have drinks and enjoy the amazing space - and skip the dinner that had promise but was really a 2/5. That said - 5/5. It’s a remarkable space, location is fantastic and the rooms (with high ceilings) far superior than any standard hotel. It’s a perfect place to stay.

I went here for a company event and the interior is really creative. The exposed brick and interior design really honors the traditional raw Detroit vibe. I valet parked and the attendant was helpful and kind. I didn't stay in a room, but got a glimpse and they were also very cool. The food we had at our catered event was excellent and our event was held in a room that faced our Canadian neighbors. It's a great location.

This hotel is nothing but gorgeous, and the staff/service/cleanliness is perfect. The food is excellent, the drinks are delicious, and everyone there was happy, polished, and hospitable. I will be staying again soon!

The hotel and restaurant and are nice but average. For what they charge I would expect a nicer place. Coincidentally, both times we have stayed there they charged us for things we didn’t take out of the mini bar. Make sure you check your bill! The staff did reimburse us for the overages. Maybe I’m too picky.

Very industrial chic hotel. Daughter was married here. Loved the history of the building and the rooms were each unique & quirky. Hotel staff was very helpful & accommodating for the wedding & guests. Food for the wedding was very good. Downsides were that our room was not cleaned very well as there were long tangles of hair in the shower & bathroom floor, room prices were high & the mini bar prices were obscenely high.

Beautiful hotel and restaurant, however our experience was interesting. I paid for an upgraded room and upon checking in, was told that someone “may have called” us to let us know that the hotel had overbooked and our room was being downgraded - without refunding what I paid for the upgrade. No one had called and I told them I wanted what I had paid for or a refund for the difference. Simple enough. Somehow then, we magically got the room I had paid for. Also, before we departed for our trip, we called *in advance, day-of* to confirm the kitchen (not bar) hours and were told 11pm. When we arrived, we were informed that the kitchen closed at 10pm, so my fiancé went into the restaurant to confirm and was told…. 11pm. We then sit down at the bar at 10:15 and are told that the kitchen was closed. Sigh. There are some legitimate customer service/communication issues that need to be resolved before we would consider staying again.

Stayed for a business trip in the fall. Room was not clean and room service was cold. I left bags with the desk while I was out for meetings. Unclear if some items were left in room or taken from bag, but they went missing. Called hotel immediately (within an hour of leaving) when I realized I didn’t have them. No one would call me back and there was no offer to replace the items. Poor service given the price.

I had a room block here for my wedding in September 2021, and also stayed in one of the suites for my wedding night and day before. My entire experience with the hotel and hotel staff was amazing - they were wonderful to work with!! I was debating between having my room / room block here or the Shinola Hotel, but the staff at DFH were so helpful and welcoming right from the start (which was not my experience with other hotels). I had several changes to my room block - adding rooms and changing what room types - and DFH was super responsive and helpful with every single change. They also allowed me to upgrade my suite. Most of all the staff that I encountered during my stay were all SO NICE and friendly/welcoming, booking this hotel was definitely one of the best things about my wedding experience. The hotel itself is beautiful, I love the style/decor/feel of the building, and all the amenities were very nice. I will definitely be staying here again in the future!

Monday night. Lounge/restaurant and room look great but room ventilation is loud and temperature uneven. Random banging throughout the night. Bed is concave but pillows and sheets are nice. Got crowded out of our lovely spot at the lounge by a bunch of rude, drunk corporate guests which left us with a bitter taste.

We ate brunch at the restaurant inside the hotel. The food was good. A little expensive but it was worth it. The espresso was my favorite part. They even had oat milk. I'd go back but probably for our anniversary or something. We don't eat out very often. The server was very nice and the hostess was very welcoming. Also who doesn't love valet parking lol.

Make sure to use HoteITully.á´„á´Źm when booking any hotel. This website will compare thousands of booking websites and normally will have rates a lot cheaper compared to others! Thank me later! This hotel is one of the best in this area. I've been coming here for a long time. If you decide to stay here you for sure won't be let down. Beautiful boutique hotel! Our room was HUGE, clean and well-stocked. Great service all around and nice bar area too. We'll be back.

Absolutely wonderful hotel experience. Every single furnishing is clearly high quality and carefully selected, incredibly unique style. The food and drinks were great and our room was clean and super charming. We will definitely go back. Impeccable hospitality. Our first room had a small issue in the bathroom that immediately got worked on and then immediately upgraded us to a nicer room. Every encounter with staff was positive. Love this place.

Cool vibe to the rooms, service was welcoming and the hotel is well situated. The hotel bar was the highlight; bartenders were clearly good at their jobs and the bar had a classy feel to it. Will definitely go again.

We did a staycation this weekend at the Foundation Hotel and had the best time. A+ service and experience. Each staff member we interacted with went above and beyond to ensure we had a great stay. From our experience at the Apparatus Room for brunch (they squeezed us in last minute AND sat us at a cool table) to the helpful valet guys to the individuals at the front desk, I was consistently impressed and felt valued as a customer. The cherry on top was the car service (Black Label Lincoln Navigator) that was offered to us to take us out to dinner around town and pick us back up. Our driver, Ali, was very friendly and a great driver. If you're debating between this hotel and another in Detroit - stay here. You won't be disappointed.

I cannot begin to explain how amazing this hotel was. From the staff to the hotel itself - everything was perfect. The staff went above and beyond in every way they could. We will definitely always stay at The Detroit Foundation everything we are in the area!

Tries but doesn’t deliver. If you can stay at Shinola instead (really great). Cool redo of a firehouse but weak on substance: breakfast took 40 minutes to show up (hard to scramble those eggs I guess), room service didn’t fully clean room, paid $500 for a room that stared at a brick wall, staff was rude when tried to get coffee because a wedding group was rolling in and had rented restaurant, suggested a trip to Starbucks.

  • 2/5 Meg H. 1 year ago on Google
There was a wedding taking place at The Apparatus Room the night of our stay. We were notified the day before our stay that the hotel restaurant would be closed that night due to an event. No big deal to us. What the email should have said was ' we are going to be blasting music until midnight so you aren't going to be able to hear your tv or sleep until after that ' - it was ridiculous. The bass was thumping in our room. Once the music was done, we then heard all the furniture squeaking as your staff was music it around. When i called the receptionist to ask how long the wedding would last, she was very snobby with me and offered no solution / room change. Highway robbery of a staycation that my husband and I had been looking forward to.

The Detroit Foundation Hotel is amazing. The rooms are spacious and so unique and I loved looking at the little museum and tribute to the first responders. Well done. The food, the people and the great atmosphere are outstanding and want to give a special shout out to Tondra, the manager who really went out of her way to help me out. Thank you so much for that. If you are a fish lover make sure and try the Trout spread. One of my favorites now.
