I had such a great experience with both Lia P and Kayla W! Kayla gave me a great hair cut and Lia gave me the best bayalage/highlight combo I’ve ever had! Both were extremely kind and professional and took the time to listen to what I wanted out of the experience. Cannot recommend both of them enough!

I did a bleach free burgundy and copper balayage. I am in LOVE with how my hair looks. Christine did an amazing job. He is the absolute BEST!!!!! This was my first experience at AVEDA and I am glad I decided to give them a try. Everyone loves my hair and I’m constantly getting compliments 😍💕

Let me start by saying Jessica Davis gave me one of the best haircuts, I have literally ever had! My hair is usually touching my butt by the time I get my next cut, and I have major anxiety every time I get it cut. I saw a Groupon for the Douglas J Aveda School and was skeptical until I read some reviews. I decided to go for it, figured for the price if I didn't like it I could always go somewhere else after to have it fixed. Let me tell you they met all my expectations and some! My appointment started right on time. I got a choice between a moisturizing or repair botanical with my wash. Than we discussed what I wanted, and the instructor double checked prior to the cut that she understood exactly what I wanted. Than after the cut, he came over again with a comb and scissors to double check her work (which he never needed the scissors, my girl was flawless). After that she blew dried my hair with a slight style (I didn't pay extra for an actually blow out). The instructor came one last time to make sure I was satisfied with Jessica's work. I left feeling amazing, fresh and light. I asked for 5 inches cut with long layers, a face frame starting from my chin and to make sure I could put all my hair in a ponytail. She checked every box, and the next day I received high praises all day on my hair at work. Thanks Jessica if your still at here for my next cut, I will definitely be requesting you! If not the best of luck on your journey, you will be great!

Anna V did an absolutely amazing job with my daughters long curly thick hair. My daughter said she was so nice to her and knew all about lots of fun things to talk about. This is a huge job and she did a great job with a wash and deep conditioning treatment. Highly recommend. The school is very nice, clean and professional. :)

Wonderful! The student expertly took my hair to the desired length. Then when I said they could do a pattern and have fun if they wanted, they warned me they had never done it before but I said I didn’t care since no one would see. Then they come out here and try the hardest thing a freaking flower and absolutely make a lovely design 💛 lovely person Sarah W out here making a lovely design and being so kind and nice too!

Audrey Perkins did a balayage for me, I was very scared to go and get my hair done after I had a mishap a few years ago with a cut at another place. Audrey was very kind, tentative, gentle, and reassuring. Her service was never agressive or uncomfortable, I was there for about 5 hours and was exhausted but she made me feel comfortable and welcome. She engaged in conversation and was very thorough with her work, you could say she is a perfectionist. When she was untangling my hair after the color I barely felt any pull on my scalp. At the end I couldn't believe my hair looked so good. I recommend her 100% and will be going back to her even though I have an aveda near me, I would rather drive an hour to have her do my hair again.

Austin always makes me feel super comfortable during my appointments and goes the extra mile to make sure my vision is coming to life! I cannot say enough great things! He recently cut/styled my hair for a wedding and I have never felt more beautiful.

(using my boyfriends google account) i recently visited douglas j aveda with my friend and we both made appointments for Brazilian waxing. i was taken care of by a woman named abby and my friend was taken care of by a woman named Jasmine (jazzy) . we were looking forward to making an appointment again for the stress relieving treatment soon but found out they graduated! just wanted to leave a review and let everyone know how great of a job they did and how well douglas j aveda trains these future hair stylists/waxers/estheticians/mua/etc!! the instructors also do a great job of attentively monitoring them as well and were also very kind and compassionate toward trainees. i would highly recommend and will be returning in a few days for that stress relieving treatment!! their spa environment seems so serene!!

Cecilia Grassi was amazing! She cut both of my daughters hair, one of which was having their first haircut ever. She was gentle and kind towards them and took away any stresses they had going in. My 6 year old was nervous to get her haircut but Cecilia took her to the shampoos and let her smell all the scents and pick her favorite. It was the perfect way to make my daughter relax and enjoy the process. One of my daughters has very thick hair that is hard to brush and Cecilia gave her a subtle layered cut that has been a godsend! We can now brush it without tangles and tears. Cecilia was charming and thoughtful, we will absolutely be back!

I have never been happier with my hair! Ava Smigielski not only did an amazing job, she gave me a wonderful experience. I don't always enjoy going to have my hair done at salons, but I would go again :) I highly recommend scheduling with her, she is very talented!

I am absolutely OBSESSED!! This is my second time seeing Mallory B and she never disappoints. Today I asked for a trim and a partial highlight so my hair would look fresh and bright for summer, but I didn't want to be too blonde. She cut my hair to the perfect length and the color is phenomenal! Mallory has only been a student for 9 months but she was able to color, cut, and blow dry my hair in 2 hours, and she gave me exactly what I wanted! I highly recommend Mallory to all of my friends :)

My stylist Zahraa was absolutely amazing! She was attentive, knowledgeable, very kind, and did a beautiful, amazing job. I will be returning just for her. I definitely recommend her! This was my first time going to Douglas J Aveda in Royal Oak to get a facial with Paris G and it was INCREDIBLE! She helped me to feel relaxed and comfortable the minute you get into the room. After she concluded, I didn't want it to end! My face was glowing! I saw and felt a positive difference from when I entered. My skin felt healthy and well taking care of! I will be going back!

I had the best time getting spruced up by Delaney!! First time going to a school to get services done, naturally I was little nervy. But it came out SO GOOD. I got exactly what I asked for. Just a dark all over color and chop the dead ends. Very pumped and happy about my service. Also shout out for Delaney for not dying my skin or forehead! First time in 29 years, that I walked out of a salon without dye on me lol. Thank you for everything! Hope to see you again! 10/10

Kari does a fantastic job with my hair!!! I have been fortunate enough to be able to have her as my stylist on several occasions. I have very curly hair (definitely a challenge) and she had been super with handling all aspects of the process from washing, coloring to styling!!!! I had a plant stem cell facial with Kendal F and it was so relaxing. She was very professional and did such a great job. I loved the hot stones and every product felt luxurious. It was a great mix of warming and cool/refreshing applications. My skin was so hydrated and glowy afterwards. I’m definitely coming back. I already booked my next facial. The rest of the staff was also very kind and it was an overall great experience.

I got a facial done here a few weeks ago. Faith was absolutely amazing! She was very gentle with the extractions. She explained all of the products and what they did throughout the entire facial. At the end, she recommended a few products to include in my daily routine at home. Overall, it was an amazing experience and she did fantastic! I would highly recommend Faith for any service!

Worst haircut of my life. What I asked for vs what I got…. I just needed a bang trim. The bangs were already there! Just needed a TRIM. The student that cut my hair is only two months from graduation and I trusted she would be able to do a simple bang trim, as many at this salon have before. Wrong. Not a word from the manager or any apology from any of her “supervisors” when I was literally crying in the chair. Do not go to Allison for any complicated cut. Worst haircut of my life and I don’t know what I’m going to do for the next two months. I have a work holiday party in a week and I look ridiculous and any revision would just make them shorter. I’m beside myself. The fact that not a single supervisor or manager said a word to me about the horrible hack job I got has put me off of ever coming back. Completely unprofessional. Whatever manager worked Friday Nov 24 at 5 pm was absolutely negligent in supervising my cut. The woman who “approved” the cut could tell it was much shorter than I had wanted and said nothing to me—she was a Black gal with a blond pixie cut. Not a WORD about the state of my hair. She suggested taking even more length off the sides of the bangs as though that would help! (Not only was the cut way too short but it was clearly also crooked! Yay!) She and Allison both need training on how to cut BASIC BANGS. Absolutely awful.

I had a haircut by Janell and she did an excellent job. Janell was very professional and easy to talk to. She took her time and made sure I was happy with the cut before I left. I have naturally curly hair….and I was extremely happy with how my cut turned out. Already scheduled my next appointment with Janell!

I love coming here to get my hair done. It really doesn't take much longer than going to a salon and it's probably, on average, at least 75 percent less in price. I have a new student every time (I've gone at least 4 times now) and they have all been great. Very professional, easy to talk to, fun atmosphere. And an instructor always checks their work. Great value, great service. :) When I save up a bit more money, I'm looking forward to trying one of their facials.

Was very pleasantly surprised to have this cosmetology student, Kelsey Craig, complete a haircut and botanical treatment on my hair like a true professional who is thoughtful, confident, careful, and passionate with her art that made my hair looked fantastic and amazing. I went in for a facial and hair cut. The facial was amazing. The student and professor were so insightful! I booked again with her! As for the hair cut, it was meh, she kept getting the round brush stuck in my hair after I told her I have very thick hair. I ask for a simple cut, layers,& face frame. It looked good and curled when I left. Now that I am home and the bounce is gone, all she did was cut 2 big chunks into my hair for a frame, no blending it in . She was to be a senior student so no teacher had to approve her work. My fault for not making the prof approve it. But next time I will use a different person.

Wow! Just got a great wash, botanical treatment, cut and style from Douglas J! It was my first experience and I WILL be back! The student Arnela explained every step and referred back to her instructor repeatedly - which was perfect. My hair smells and feels WONDERFUL and the cut is just perfect!!! Arnela made me feel comfortable and listened every time I had a request. I made a follow up appointment for six weeks, this is the first time in my life I’ve ever made a follow up appointment that quickly. And you definitely can’t beat the prices at this place! ♥️♥️

My appointment was right on time, screening was quick and efficient. My stylist, Jennifer B, was amazing! She was able to get my hair the exact color I envisioned, my cut was perfect and I was pleasantly surprised at what a great value! 1/3 the price of my usual salon visit for color/cut/style!! The instructor, Joe, was very helpful and hands on to ensure my student stylist was able to give me exactly what I wanted! Hands down a fantastic experience from beginning to end!

Brelyn R. was very sweet and professional! She was super patient when I was describing what I do and don’t like about a haircut, even though the descriptions and pictures I showed were contradicting. However, she took her time and was attentive, and my haircut turned out EXACTLY how I wanted! Brelyn was even kind about my previous quarantine cut haha Oh! also a huge plus! She focused on me and wasn’t gossiping with her classmates (which has happened to me at another salon institute near royal oak high school 🤦🏻‍♀️)

I had Storm J. as my stylist and you would've thought she's been working at a salon for years. Storm was super sweet, very professional & really did a great job with my cut. I went and had my eyebrows waxed and I am simply outdone! This is not what I expected. I know the name says institute but I thought I would at least be safe. Highly Unrecommended!!

The services are provided in a friendly and professional manner. They always do a great job here even though the stylists are students! So, the teachers must be pretty amazing I guess.

I have been going to Aveda for a few years now and will not be returning back. While a couple of times I have found my haircuts to be subpar, my last experience was the final straw. I had told my stylist that I did not want the front touched as I was growing it out yet wanted the back trimmed, and showed her the length with my hands. She ended up doing the complete opposite of what I had asked, giving me a face frame (something I specifically told her I did not want) and even curtain bangs, all while not touching the back. This experience was very appalling and my haircut looks terrible with the front pieces being 7-8 inches shorter than my back pieces. Would not recommend this place, it is not worth the cheap cost.

Loved my balayage done by student Alyson C! She knew exactly what she was doing and I could barely tell she was even a student. Alyson was professional, friendly, and accommodating. I didn't know exactly what I wanted and Alyson was able to quickly work with me to figure out some ideas, and I loved the end result. I am also the type of client that prefers relaxing/not talking much while getting my hair done, and I appreciated that Alyson picked up on that and did not try to engage me in overwhelming small talk. I would definitely recommend Alyson C. as a stylist!

I had Stephanie Ellis do balayage on my hair. She was not only very fun but she also took her time to make sure it looked natural. She was amazing. Highly recommend. Douglas j is always very professional!

I attended this school for a week the director down to the professors were very inconsiderate, unprofessional and furthermore they’re a rip off, I asked the school since the day I began is it ok for me to be 10 mins late (we only attended class 2 days a week ) 30 mins a week totaling 12 hours at the end of the course ... no one was willing to work with me (Aveda in Ann Arbor was) they prolonged giving me an answer just so they could collect 4000 from me and to give me an incomplete kit. I wouldn’t recommend this school for animals especially considering how empathetic they were. Lastly they didn’t even have a set time when I signed the contract ( just took things as they went) very unprofessional & let’s not forget the time they take back to reach out to you is ridiculous & they still haven’t turned my loan money (exceeding 30 days ) in making it more inconvenient to switch to a school more accommodating to help with my success (MCB in Troy Rocks)!!!!

Savanah gave me a balayage and I love how it turned out! My hair usually takes a long time to work on because it's long, and Savanah was so patient and professional during the whole process. She worked very hard and gave me exactly what I was hoping for. I am very happy!

I received a botanical treatment and haircut from Stephanie E and she was amazing!! Her customer service was phenomenal as well as her skills. I was cutting off 7 inches and she took her time to make sure that everything was done right. I was super happy with the results!

I was scheduled to have a Stress Relieving Treatment at the institute. I was promptly met by my student, Bree Petretis. She was kind and courteous and asked me questions about my knowledge of her salon. I had never been to an Aveda salon before so it was nice that she let me know a bit about them. Once we arrived in the room she explained what was going to be done and why. She allowed me to pick the scent that was appealing to me. The environment was very calm and soothing. Bree started with my foot soak which was very nice, we then proceeded to the table for the treatment. It was AMAZING!! I even recommended that my daughter, who was there getting her hair colored, schedule with Bree to have a Stress Relieving Treatment for herself!! At the end of my treatment I was asked by the instructor what my favorite part was, I told her ALL of it! I left there feeling stress free and very wonderful! Thank You Bree!!!!! I will be back a few times before you complete your education!!!!

My first experience! Amazing value and I got a great hair cut! The student will take the lead but is consulted by their teacher. They will do a final check to ensure everything looks good! 100% recommend.

I got my hair dyed darker and got a trim for an amazing price! And my hair is beautiful! I had Phillip do my hair and he is very funny and knows his stuff! Love coming here. Been coming to this location for years. Everyone is so friendly. They always go above and beyond from a customer service standpoint. And my hair always looks fantastic when I leave. I should add that I'm a bit more low maintenance when it comes to my hairstyle, so I'm not too picky if things don't turn out 100% as I expected. It is a hair school, after all. But the instances of that happening have been far and few between.

This is long overdue! I went to the salon about a month ago and had the BEST haircut done by Emily H. It was the day before my "supposed to be wedding date" since we postponed due to covid. On top of the haircut, she spent time styling my hair the way I wanted. I left so happy with my haircut and styling and it really lifted my spirits. Thank you, Emily!!
