Only a half hour from Plovdiv, this Monastery dating from the 11th C. has a rich and important history. It has been the site of many critical events in Bulgarian history including playing a big part in saving the Jewish population from Nazis in WWII! Parking is easy and cheap. No cost to visit. Spectacular church, interesting preserved mosaics in dining hall, nice museum too. Interesting vendors selling good food and some interesting items along the wall from the parking lot. Have Fun!

We took the bus from Plovdiv and we went to the monastery. The route was wonderful all green everywhere. The monastery is very beautiful and is worth a visit for sure.

It's a beautiful church. There is a museum too. We went there on Sunday and there were so many people. From Plovdiv, mini bus cost 7 lev each, but we felt it was a rip-off , or maybe it was the right price.

Gorgeous monastery. Every inch of the church walls are coveted in hand paint. The walls are dark but illuminate with gold paint. It's a wonderful feeling. The trees are unique and old. The courtyards ate ancient and we'll kept. You feel tremendous peace being here.

The Bachkovo Monastery "Uspenie Bogorodichno" is a true gem nestled in the picturesque Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria. This historic monastery holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike, and it is easy to see why. From the moment you step foot onto the monastery grounds, you are enveloped in an atmosphere of tranquility and spirituality. The stunning architecture, with its intricate details and vibrant frescoes, is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of this place. Inside the monastery, you will find an array of beautifully decorated chapels and prayer rooms, each with its own unique charm. The highlight, of course, is the main church, where you can witness the awe-inspiring beauty of the frescoes, which depict biblical scenes and stories. The surrounding natural beauty of the Rhodope Mountains adds to the allure of Bachkovo Monastery. Take a leisurely walk through the serene gardens, filled with fragrant flowers and towering trees, or explore the nearby hiking trails for breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a spiritual seeker, or simply someone looking for a peaceful retreat, Bachkovo Monastery "Uspenie Bogorodichno" is a must-visit destination. Its beauty, serenity, and cultural significance make it a truly unforgettable place to explore.

One of the most stunning monasteries I’ve seen. No wonder they built it in the mountains as it’s very peaceful and calm location. Definitely worth to visit. Also the tap water is drinkable and it tastes good too.

From the transformative and sanctimonious interiors of the church to the utterly peaceful courtyards, where, seldom, the monks roam in reflective prayer, happily engaged in internal spiritual dialogues with the heavens. This is a monastery that cannot be passed by casually; engage, converse and explore!

Second largest monastery in Bulgaria. Beautiful building with two churches - only the main one is open to the public. The church is beautiful with elaborate paintings and gold ornaments. Here you will find a famous painting (icon) of The Virgin Mary - believed to be miraculous. The monastery is also situated in the mountains. Only a short drive from Plovdiv, the area offers some great hiking opportunities. You can visit any time of the year. During the hot summer months, it is a great escape from the heat on Plovdiv and Asenovgrad.

Monastery in a beautifull scenery, full of spirit and peacefullness. Well maintained, for local circumstances. Also, inside the walls, there are many awesome things to see, including the church itself, musseum, some other rooms, springs and what I like the most, the ancient trees in the yard. Actually, there are 2 separated backyards in this location, both worth to walk around. Down the road, you have lots of merchants and craftman selling their goods. Also could be interesting for some people...

No need for ticket to enjoy the serenity and splendor of this place. Visited during a bank holidays, the place wasn't really crowded but busy. Enough space to wander around the architecture and enjoy the paintings and craftsmanship both in masonry as well as landscaping.

Great place. Its greatness is hidden 40 min up in the mountain. Don't even think about missing it.

One of the most beautiful monasteries in Bulgaria. The murals are spectacular and the atmosphere is special. There is access to toilets and water and not too crowded. Inside are the graves of Metropolitan Kirill and Metropolitan Stefan who were involved in rescuing Bulgarian Jews during the Holocaust.

I’ve been here as a kid but couldn’t remember much, so I decided to revisit again as an adult. Very peaceful place, and makes you wonder about what life was like back in the day when it was built. The church is gorgeous and the courtyard is quite relaxing when there are no people. I went around 9:30 AM on a weekday and there was barely anyone. Learned that if you want a tour, you can request one at the museum. Also, they have white pigeons and peacocks! Recommend if you are in the area. P.S. for the avid hikers, there is a path leading from the monastery to Asenova Fortress. Had I had the time, I would’ve done it. The area is absolutely gorgeous.

Beautiful place for tourists. Be careful if you get invited upstairs, they ask for 200 euro. The renovation work makes it look new, the history is being ruined by adding shops and museums.

A trip to Bachkovo Monastery the second largest monastery in Bulgaria is a must. The nice walk from the parking lot to the monastery is accompanied with many stalls along the walkway where you can shop for honey, jams and different handmade items and crafts. Ten centuries of monastery history in addition with its cobbled courtyard, frescoes and central church are contributing to the amazing experience

Beautiful place. As a non religious person I have found it super peaceful and amazing to explore. It is a wonderful historical site that everyone that passes that route should see. Beautiful!

As a Pagan this place could be a little overwhelming. The building itself though is beautiful, as is the artwork. When you look at the surrounding hills and scenery you can understand why the Christians who built this feel so close to their God there.

This incredible monastery is guarding ages of history within its walls. Beautiful architecture, a large and very well maintained temple, lots of rooms to stay in and lots of visitors at any given time of the year are what set it apart. It's a must visit place for anyone who enjoys the link between history, architecture, culture, religion and nature all in one spot.

Amazing monastery, Parking is just 2lv. You can take a small hike to see waterfalls, church and an interesting room(?) With stone stairs. You should go straight when you leave the monastry. Don't go left to the parking lots. You will see the doors, then you will be able to follow the path.

Beautiful place that’s super clean and extremely well maintained! It’s so peaceful here and if you pay attention, you’ll be able to hear the birds! Very peaceful to just walk around. Make sure you see the main chapel as it’s absolutely stunning with all the gold colours, and you can tell they regularly maintain it. This is a very important place for Bulgarians, and I can see why! A must-do if you can!

👍👍 Бързо и лесно се стига по широката пътечка от Бачковския манастир. Преди водопада има полянка с места за сядане. А до самия водопад е високо и стръмно, не е подходящо, ако имате малки и непослушни деца.
