A beautiful sight, located in a wide green meadow just off the road from Yoakim Gruevo town to Perushtitsa town. You can't park your car in front of the basilica, you have to leave it by the road, but the path to the Tourist Information Center and the basilica is picturesque enough, passing by a channel, fields of strawberries, and cherry trees. The path is around 700 meters and it's wheelchair accessible. The basilica itself is nicely preserved, but don't expect to see too much of it--mostly the eastern wall. Some of the centuries-old frescos are still visible and very impressive. There are information signs in Bulgarian and English that can give you interesting details about the place. There's a path that circles around the remains of the basilica, with benches to sit and relax. The path is wheelchair accessible, although a bit overgrown with grass and doesn't allow access into the basilica itself. You can buy souvenirs are the information center as well as use the toilets there. The information center has fixed working hours, but the basilica doesn't, so you can visit it at any time--just follow the path on the right of the information center. The place is a 30-40 minutes drive from Plovdiv.

The Red Church (Червена църква, Chervena tsarkva) is a large partially preserved late Roman (early Byzantine) Christian basilica in south central Bulgaria. Dating to the late 5th–early 6th century, the church stands near the town of Perushtitsa in western Plovdiv Province, some 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) southwest of the city of Plovdiv. The Red Church is a rare example of solid brick construction in a church from Late Antiquity in Bulgaria, and it was the red colour of the bricks that gave the church its name. Totally worth seeing. The tax is 5 BGN

Beautiful place with a lot of history. We had a wonderful experience with a guide on site who told us a lot about the site and its excavation. I highly recommend it to appreciate and enjoy fully.

Loved the Red Church and well worth a visit. Dogs allowed too! Cost us 4lev each (about £2) but there was plenty of information to read. The member of staff at the information building was very kind but had limited English. Amazing to visit one of the oldest churches in Europe.

Surprisingly modern and new visitor centre run by a charmingly enthusiastic lady who will explain the history and importance of the church in good English. An interesting little stop-off before continuing on to Hills Brewery.

You have to visit it from a historical and archaeological point of view! It is better to buy the combined ticket for the museum, the church and the school.

The municipality has decided to limit access to the remains of the church to such an extent that you cannot even approach it without paying an entrance fee. But entrance for what as real? There is one remaining wall and you cannot enter anywhere or anything... . The administration has built a building next to the remains and made sure that no one approaches. If they had somehow built something to protect the remains from rain etc. I would understand the entrance fee, but in this form they are quite cheeky to collect money...

24.8.2019 except for taxis access road prohibited, but no parking lots at main street.Hmm,and to walk 700ms with 35 degrees and without any shadow?Again very smart utilization of EU-funds in Bulgaria...

The choice of colors for this church is extremely interesting. Besides, I love climbing to the top of this church with my red crocs. 10 steps doesn't sound like much, but they're a lot, which is why I recommend the red crocs, with their soft soles and airy holes, which make it easy to climb these steps use, but since they are red they only work on red buildings since they are red.

In awe of this amazing piece of history. Humans must try to appreciate such part of history that sits in Perushtitsa, BG.

The Red Church is a Christian church in ruins, which functioned from the 4th to the 14th century, located near the town of Perushtitsa. Since 1927 it has had the status of "National Antiquity", and in 1966 it was declared a cultural monument of national importance. Great place for a day trip in the region of Southern Bulgaria. 😊

It's a nice place to visit and take some pictures. It's amazing for how long this church managed to survive and how some of the paintings on the walls are still preserved. There's not much space to park in front of the walkway. You need to walk for like 700 meters before you're able to see the church.

👍👍 Another must see communist landmark in Bulgaria. The second best country for communist monuments after Russia. The road and sight are not well maintained in winter. I had to leave the car 1km down the road.
