Very impressive! What an incredibly preserved and wonderfully restored complex! When you come upon the area it is awesome to behold in my opinion! There is a large area to explore and wandering around is very affordable at 5 €. If you visit the Fortress on a sunny day come prepared with sunscreen and water maybe even a hat.

The fortresses is a place were you can climb, walk and discover remains of it. The landscape can be better when everything is bloomed. As the signs says, watch out for small lizards on sunny days, and be prepared with bottles of water. The sun does not forgive. Also, light or comfortable shoes are recommended for climbing. Some tips: - the entrance is 5 lv for an adult - there are some vending machines close to the main church - capture the map from the main entrance for better guidance - you'll find some interesting paintings inside the cliff church

If you wish to get some more insights I. The Bulgarien history, the fortress is what you want to visit. The distributed sound system offers useful details, the whole area has shady spots to enjoy and relax. Don't miss the impressive Church at the top!

Absolutely gorgeous place with stunning views. Medieval fortress, capital of the Second Bulgarian kingdom is in very good condition. Must see if you are in Bulgaria. The Baldwin tower, the patriarch cathedral, with its quiet modern painting - all that history all around is a great experience. If you are visiting in the summer - be prepared with a hat and water - it is very hot and sunny there.

Don't miss out on this hidden gem. needs around 1 and a half hour to get around. the cathedral is a must-see with amazing wall paintings. also visit the vigilance tower to get a real-life feeling of castle warfare. Unfortunately, the elevator to the top of the bells was out of order.

It's worth the walk, the few hours, and the non-expensive ticket price to visit and explore the vestiges of the medieval fortress. As visitor, you will be mostly on your own, because there are no guides and no information in English or other international language. The museum on top is intriguingly painted (but kind of kitchy?). The view from above if amazing. During the summer days, use sun protection and hat. Take some water with you, or some leva if you want to buy it from the vending machines.

Worth the money for paying 10lev...with this breathtaking view and it’s a huge site for you to explore... we’re very lucky to come here just perfect weather. So in love with the panoramic view, the surroundings- it’s just great time and great experience. Definitely a MUST visit when you’re in this town.

Definitely one of the best and well preserved fortresses I visited. Very easily explorable, a good sight to see from close and afar. It's funny that inside one of the towers there are mock weapons to take some selfies with. The view to the city is also quite good. There are places to buy refreshments inside. Just please - to all visitors, squish your bottle before throwing it away. No need to take the space of the whole trashcan with two bottles.

When we visited there were no many people so we could take our tour in peace. The ruins are beautiful and the restored parts as the Patriarchy were amazing. Lots of green, lots of history. Everybody should visit.

The compound is pretty large, it is all peaceful, the view is great. You can easily spend two relaxed hours inside the fortress. One of the landmarks of Veliko Tarnovo.

Pretty close to the city center (20 to 30 minutes by walk), Tsarevets Fortress is definitely a must seen if you visit Veliko Tarnovo. The price for the entrance is pretty cheap and overall it takes approximately 2 to 3 hours (if you want to make a pause) to visit the whole place. If you are lucky and the weather is good, it's a pleasure to just sit for a while here and relax, while enjoying the view.

Amazing place. 1 euro only to go inside. Nice spot to take nice pictures, picnic or spend your day. I visited it in a sunny day. Was amazing to see people and the capel on the top. From The top you have a good view from the city. If you have time it worth go to visit mini Bulgaria next to this fort. Nothing else to see in the city 3 hours it’s enough

The main attraction of Veliko Tarnovo, the fortress is situated on a hill. The entrance is only 6 Leva, cheap. The tickets are available across the street from the entrance. Even this place is actually a ruin, there are still lots of things to see: the church on the hill, the old residences, the tower rebuilt. Lots of spectacular photos! However, since it's the main attraction of the city, the municipality should do more things to improve it. For example, the signs and the explanations are mainly in German, Russian and Bulgarian. Only few in English! Visiting this place during the summer or during some national holidays would allow you to see a spectacular light show!

This is one of the most historic places in Bulgaria. The Fortress is well preserved and you can have a walk across the whole thing. Really worth the visit, if you are nearby. Great part of the Bulgarian history.

As soon as you reach the city, you see it: the Tsarevets Fortress. It's stunning! The bridge that takes you to the fortress has some great views and it's quite nice. You can also climb up to a few towers to enjoy the panoramic view of the city. On a sunny summer day, you should definitely use some sunscreen as most of your visit will be in direct sunlight. If you're passing through Veliko or you're nearby, I would recommend paying this one a visit.

The fortress itself is well looked after and preserved. It really is a wonderful place to have a peaceful stroll to enjoy history, culture and of course, nature and views of the city. Clean allover. It is best to go in the morning to avoid crowds and tour groups. There are a few things that I personally feel is daylight robbery (and I'm sure that a lot of others might feel the same but are too shy to mention it). 1. You have to pay 1 Lev to use the toilet which has NO toilet paper. 2. if you want to go up to the lookout point by the church, you have to pay another 3 lev as well. 3. Drinks in the vendor machines and any of the souvenirs inside and outside of the fortress are overpriced. You already pay a lot for entry and then you have to pay to use the toilet or to go up to the viewpoint??? If that's not daylight robbery then I'm a donkey.

It's a must visit place in Veliko Tarnovo. There is an entrance fee but for a family it is around 8 euros, as I remember. It has great views of the city and surrounded mountains. At the top, there is a church and it's a bit steep to walk. Keep enough water on a sunny day. A lot of shops near the entrance to buy souvenirs.

  • 4/5 David S. 6 months ago on Google • 38 reviews
Nice to explore this big site, the remains, the walls,.. Do know that most of it has been destroyed so you'll mainly see the remains. With some imagination though you can see it all come alive as it was back in those days. The elevator in the central church / tower to go up to the viewpoint is closed on Mondays. I recommend visiting because it s a nice site showing a part of Veliko Tarnovo's and Bulgarians history. However also don't expect too much.

A truly significant place that must be seen by anyone who visits the town. A good tour would take about 2 hours. There's an a panoramic elevator behind the bells tower which I recommend, it costs 2lv per person the view is worth it. Overall a 5 star experience.

It's a must see place when you're in Veliko Tarnovo. Beautiful views! It took us quite a lot of time to see it all so I definitely recommend taking water with you! My only issue was lack of English signs - I saw them in different languages but for some reason no English.

Beautiful! Stunning scenery surrounding the Fortress. So much history within. Can be quite a hike but the view is definitely worth it. Shame we didn't stay for the light show in the evening. Even has toilets dotted around which is very handy.

Beautiful in the eye from outside. But for me i wouldn't spent even 1€ to get inside. It's only rocks without any signs in English to tell you what you are looking. And it had one church

If you’re interested in historical tourism, this is a must see. If you’re not familiar with Bulgarian history, it might be a good idea to take a guided tour. Besides the historical value, there is a magnificent view from the fortress towards the city and the riverbed. So if you’re into photography, you might take some great pictures.

Place of a great history. It's nice for a walk and sightseeing. It is large and has plenty of towers, fortress walls and the gen itself the Tzarevets fortress at the top. It is not big inside, but it has amazing view to the city. Very enjoyable. If I have to pick one place in Veliko Turnovo this will be it.

From the fortress you can see an amazing view of Veliko Tarnovo. It costs 15 bgn/family. To see it all, I think you need 2 hours. And, on Saturday night, I saw a light&sound show, which costs 10 bgn/child and 20 bgn/adult. It was interesting, but nothing special.

Great place to visit with children and understand bulgarian history. Magnificent views of the area, coupled with history is something one should not miss visiting Turnovo.

  • 4/5 Adrian M. 1 year ago on Google
The fortress is the major touristic site from Veliko Tarnovo. The area of the fortress is quite large and you will burn some calories visiting it. On top of the hill there is a church which has some unconventional mural paintings. Unfortunately there are no explanations of the main touristic spots in English. Anyhow there are some great views over the city.

  • 5/5 Fern G. 1 year ago on Google
You can spend hours here exploring the fortress and admiring the views of Veliko Tarnovo town and the surrounding countryside. Tickets can be bought from the kiosk across the road from the entrance, and there are plenty of benches and cheap vending machines conveniently placed around the complex for when you need a sit down and a drink.

  • 4/5 Amanda S. 10 months ago on Google
Massive fortress to explore. Very well kept but lacking in information and the QR code did not work. Need to read up on it or take a tour to really appreciate the history. There are some boards with reconstructions on them but that is all. Great views!

  • 5/5 Andreea-Ioana S. 10 months ago on Google
A place that is definitely worth visiting if you come to Veliko Tarnovo as the view from the fortress is amazing. There are some stairs but it is a nice walk in the nature. The only negative thing that I can mention about this place is that there is almost no information about the fortress written in English, only in Bulgarian and Russian (I think).

  • 5/5 Nicole N. 10 months ago on Google
This is the ex capital of Bulgarian empire. A large semi preserved fortress. The view to suroundings is beatiful. About 1-2h walk (depends on how curious you are). Ps. In the evening they have a light castle show, the colour of the lights to the castel change. I do not know at what time, but for us was at 22:40. So find a distant good spot to admire.

The ruins of the Bulgarian capital, which was destroyed in the medieval ages. A place that breathes medieval history, heroism and treachery. One of the must visits in Bulgaria. 👍 Nice place to relax in the heart of the town. Fountains ( when working ) are a pleasure to watch. Needs more light at night. Non expensive pubs around. You may drink beer and enjoy the atmosphere. Suitable for all ages. Very friendly for kids as well. Nice playing ground for them.
