Devetashka Cave offers really impressive experience to its visitors. Its enormous size and the three openings on the ceiling are impressive. Devetashka Cave is a home to a colony of bats and a variety of birds including pigeons, swallow birds and others. Few years ago the cave was the set for the Hollywood movie The Expendables 2. There is an entrance fee.

A good nature place where you can enjoy the enormous cavern and see in the distance a bat colony. The cave itself is 2.4km long, but you have access to the first 100 meters. It was the scene of the first "The Expendables " movie, I believe. You could be there up to one, one and a half hours if you enjoy taking photos.

It was a quick walk from the reception area where we paid 3BGN per person. If you are with car, you can park right outside with no fee. It was 5-8 minutes walk from the reception area. It was so beautiful and breathtaking. You just need to be a little considerate with the bats too.

Pros: a wonderful cave, with a perforated ceiling, which adds a special exoticism to the cave through the abundant vegetation: dozens of swallows and other birds flying around, it is sublime. In June and July you can visit only the central pavilion of the cave, because it is the breeding season of bats. Entrance fee: 3 levs / person Cons: there are very few signs to the cave and the road is pretty bad.

Absolutely amazing what nature has created here. Entry fee. Free parking available. Whole family was amazed, including the grampy teenagers. Really cool in, significan drop in temperature. A couple of stalls for souvenirs and handmade jewellery. Not all open as closed to protect the bat population.

Very impressive caves, nearly no one when we went, there were informative signs with its history and history of the area too. We got to see a few bats flying around which was cute. Would definitely recommend visiting if you're staying locally.

It is a rare natural cave with several openings above. Home for several types of 🦇 it has high ceilings and produces a great echo. You can also hear the echo of the bats squeaking … it is definitely an interesting place

Just amazing to enter the cave and the structure. You can hear all the bats and their echo locating noises it's really something. The fences and benches were nice to have a moment to just sit down and listen to the noises and the river. A very impressive place to be in!

Great cave close to Lovech. Easy to reach, good for kids, little walking distance. It is in top 3 locations in Europe for bat hibernation of 15 bat species and usually 30-35 000 of them stay there during the period.

If you're traveling nearby, Devetashka Cave is the place you should visit. Beautiful scent of acacia trees will lead you to the huge entrance to the cave 30 meters wide. Information on bat colony with 15 different species can be found here.

Must see! One of the best works of Mother Nature! The little river inside collects water from 14 different springs and it is the most clear water I have ever seen. Entrance fee is 3lv per adult.

I believe this is the most beautiful cave from Bulgaria. It's a nice place to cool yourself on a hot summer day. Because the big ceiling opening, there is vegetation inside the cave a there is a little water to. Some part are closed because it's home of a big bats colony. Outside it's a river full of fish for those who like to fish. It's really easy to reach this location from Romania.

Very nice place, amazing proof nature's powers. Not much of it available for visiting, they protect the bats that live inside it. Very spectacular for photos. Easy access for everyone, no matter the age or condition. It won't take you more than 30 mins to visit it, but you can spend some more quiet times on one of the benches.

What is there to say? An incredible natural formation. Definitely a must see. I am uncertain why the Bulgarian government charges an entry fee for the cave, as the cave is not really set up or arranged in any meaningful way.

Big cave that was used as a location in Expendables 2 to visit if you like that sort of thing and lots of fish in the river too. The smaller, dark parts of the cave further in are closed so you don't disturb the bats. 3lv so not expensive but doesn't take long to look round.

Stunning! Bring a wide angle lens to capture this gorgeous natural formation. Unlike any other cave I have visited. 15 different species of bats live here and countless birds. A very special place and well worth the 3 lev entry.

A great place to visit. If you go in the late afternoons you might get to see the bats living inside. Also highly recommended during hot summer days, since it is quite cool in the cave. Parking lot gets busy real quick.

  • 5/5 Yana M. 2 years ago on Google
A must to visit in Bulgaria! There are over 15 breeds of bats and inhabits up to 35 000. If you go in the right time, you might be able to see sleeping bats (but not during the summer because it is the mating period for the, and the cave is partly closed).

One of the beautiful natural places Bulgaria has to offer. Home to multiple bat species, as well as a lot of birds during the warmer season. A good idea would be to visit even on the way to somewhere else - it peovides a good and cool escape from the heat of the road. There are signs in English that tell a lot about the cave itself and the bats. Entrance fee 3 BGN for adults.

I have wanted to see this cave ever since i first saw it somewhere on Facebook. Unusual. Amazing. So close since it's in Europe. So whole travelling around Romania we took a full day drive to reach it. Was it worth it. Not really - no if it's that far you have to drive. Certainly you should not miss it if you are close by. The most spectacular part is open to visit but that consists of maybe 500meters out of 2,5 km od caves - the rest reserved for bats.

What a great natural wonder! The cave is very accessible - just a short 5 minuted walk from the parking lot. Tucked in the mountain, between the trees, it opens up to the huge entrance and the big halls with natural light from the top. Visit on a sunny day and enjoy the reflections in the water pond inside. I only wish the natural looks have not been ruined by cement slabs. Still a must see if you are in the area.

A very beautiful cave, a special one. It costs 6 bgn/family. Here it was filmed in 2011 the Hollywood movie " The Expendables 2". It's a good place for taking pictures and it's not crowded.

Open cave. Not that big, the visit can be finish in 5min. But still little impressive. No bats when we were there. Famous by the movie The Expendable.

Nice cave with easy access for it. Has a parking lot. Did not expect to be so positively surprised but it was a really nice one with those holes in the ceiling. Bats colonies are there but sleeping during our visit, reason for it you can’t go very deep into the cave.

Devetashka cave is an enormous cave in Bulgaria, which has provided shelter for groups of humans since the late Paleolithic era, and continuously for tens of thousands of years since then. Now abandoned by humans, it remains a site of national and international significance and is home to some 30,000 bats. Devetashka cave, which is known as Devetàshka peshterà in Bulgaria, is located roughly 18 kilometres north of Lovech, near the village of Devetaki. It is a karst cave formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks and characterized by sinkholes, caves, and underground drainage systems. The cave is probably best known for its part in the action movie ‘The Expendables 2’, filmed in 2011, in which Sylvester Stallone crash lands a plane into Jean Claude Van Damme’s subterranean lair. After the film, local naturalists noted that the bat population had significantly diminished due to stress incurred during filming, and the Supreme Administrative Court of Bulgaria declared that this filming was in breach of Bulgaria's environmental regulations. In June, 1996, Devetashka Cave was declared a natural landmark.

The place is amazing, the view is one of a kind. On a hot summer day, the stone walls offer a cool atmosphere, you could stay there all day long.

  • 4/5 Carl S. 8 months ago on Google
Entry was very cheap 3lev per adult, child was free, parking is a bit chaotic, the caves are vast! It was a unique experience but unfortunately due to it being an important site for the Conservation of wild bats you are limited to how far you can go into the caves. There are what looks like large storage tanks in the ground which I have read were used to store oil in the past. You will need good sturdy footwear but most should be manageable for everyone.

Amazingly huge cave to visit, and it's a 5 min walk from the carpark so suitable for all ages and abilities. Definitely worth a stop for a few Leva entry fee

  • 4/5 Graham H. 5 months ago on Google • 9 reviews
Only the initial main body of the cave was accessible with other areas closed off to protect the bats. Overall rather disappointing given that there is an entry charge (not a lot, but not a lot to see).

The cave is remarkable! A true wonder of nature! It is great place to visit, it is accessable even with young children. It is good to know that you cannot visit the cave from November to March and than there are some halls in the cave with limited access during the spring to end of July! It is because of the huge bat population!

Very nice cave with huge galleries and creek flowing through the cave. Entry price is reasonable. There is a lot of doves in the cave and plenty of bats in the inner galleries. Smells bad in some galleries due to birds and bats fecals. You can see more of the beauty in the images. Some galleries are scary.

Huge cave that has been inhabited, off and on, for several thousand years. During the middle of the last century, the military constructed giant fuel tanks inside the cave to protect them from air attack; the remnants can still be seen. More naturally, the cave is inhabited by 15 varieties of bats which you can hear and see flying around.
