An absolute must visit this museum if you are even the slightest bit interested in the history of Lisbon and especially the Alfama district. In the building where the "milk station" and a facility for premature babies was founded at the beginning of the 20th century, impressive documents from that time are collected. Until 2006 there was also a cowshed here, which is now used as a kindergarten. Thanks for the fantastic tour, Joana! P.S. Don't be put off by the fact that you need to book in advance for a visit. Communication with the museum is extremely fast and very friendly.

The Dairy Museum was established by the Aboim Sande Lemos Foundation (FASL) with the purpose of disseminating the history of the pioneering institution that created the first Dairy in Portugal, in which quality milk was distributed free of charge and daily, also providing pediatric assistance to all the children she cares for. The exhibited assets disclose the history of the lacticological service and support for children, as well as the development of its activity on the national and international scene, through material testimonies, with emphasis on the first incubators in the country. At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, infant mortality rates in Portugal were quite high. To improve the living conditions of children in Alfama, where a population with obvious food shortages and poor housing conditions lived, Colonel Rodrigo António Aboim Ascensão (1859-1930), who commanded the Fiscal Guard Cavalry Company in this neighborhood, decided to create an institution. Thus, in 1901, an association was born dedicated to supporting early childhood and inspired by the French model of gouttes-de-lait (drops of milk), developed by pediatrician Léon Dufour (1856-1928). It was an innovative model with an unprecedented offer in Portugal: distribution of quality-controlled milk to children during the lactation period and pediatric support. Called Lactário, it operated in facilities close to the Alfama neighborhood, in buildings designed by architect Miguel Ventura Terra (1866-1919).

Very interesting museum, the visit is scheduled and guided, which makes it even more worthwhile. I was completely unaware of the history of the early childhood protection association and the impacts it had on the city's neediest population. Without a doubt, it is worth visiting and learning about its history.

Thanks to the guided tour full of friendliness and information, we were able to learn not only about the work carried out in the dairy, but also about how people lived 100 years ago in Lisbon.
