The delicious food was one thing, but that on top of eating 2-3 metres below the ground made this place very special. Have a good selection of foods, fair prices and tasty drinks. Very friendly staff, did originally get our bill wrong but after getting them to recount was all sorted so don't hold it against them. Had an excellent time and will visit again if we return to Newcastle

Went for lunch with my two boys, one in a pushchair. The staff were really helpful and helped me carry the buggy downstairs. Food was delicious and my 11 year old said his chocolate milkshake was the best he'd ever had. The kids portions are really generous, 11 year old usually has adult meals now but the older kids menu was plenty big enough for him. There are some really nice cocktails as well as the amazing burgers.

Given Fat Hippo is just a burger place, the vegan options were great and plentiful. The restaurant was nice and had a great atmosphere, and dappa ice cream is always a massive selling point!

Yum! 3 of us tried a range of items on the menu and we weren't disappointed by anything! The burgers are fantastic. The waffle fries are crisp, light, heavenly lattices. Everything seasoned to perfection. Tried a few dips - the spicy tomato one was knock out abd BBQ has no right tasting so damn delicious! Very well set-up for dietary requirements - not only with the menu but also staff knowledge and the flexibility they have with the ordering system to customise each ingredient in each menu item. Gave the utmost confidence when ordering. And then there's the drinks... slushies take a while to drink but are worth it. The picklebacks are a must. They shouldn't work but they really do. All the staff were great but George was the hero - professional yet friendly. Efficient but still found time for a quick chat.

So impressed! Food was SO DELICIOUS and came RAPIDLY. Experience was smooth and 10/10 overall. We ordered Trash Browns and VGN Wachos as starters, and they came shortly after the drinks. Both were absolutely delicious, but especially the Trash Browns - the liquid cheese was INCREDIBLE! The Candy Floss cocktail made our tongues feel sophisticated; there was layers to it! Burgers were scrumptious, but we were quite full after the starters. Hand cut chips are offered instead of fries, and these come with Cajun seasoning. Dedicated vegan spot on the menu, and most of the sides you could make vegan if requested! They were obviously very busy and couldn’t seat all the big groups coming in (so book in advance if in a group), but they catered to as many people as possible! Although they were busy, the staff looked relatively calm and content, which is always a green flag for a hospitality business. It’s an underground place but there was good lighting and the interior had lots of open brick. We sat by an old fireplace which was cool! Seating was well arranged. The waiters were super efficient and helpful (one provided takeaway boxes when we asked and was super friendly about it!) Lots of stairs so I don’t know how wheelchair accessible it would be? Perhaps there’s another entrance? All in all a wonderful experience and would love to return.

Been a couple times. It’s OK. Went for the great white buffalo burger- ungenerous on the sauce, not well constructed and the chicken was salty. They seemingly have an approach of putting the sauce directly on the tray instead of the burger. Service is hit and miss. Some of the younger staff have a social between themselves so it’s not very attentive and you don’t get checked up on. It is in a basement and feels like it too. Probably wouldn’t come back.

Excellent venue. Happy very polite staff, great atmosphere. We were sat fairly central but this worked well in the end. The burgers, as expected, were fantastic. Cooked perfectly, seasoned perfectly, arranged perfectly. The fries were great too, recommend the topped fries. The regular fries are still great however. Drink choice average unfortunately with all beers at pint prices, but only can sizes - however, very large choice of drinks available. Felt similar with the lettuce wedge, more of a slice of lettuce than a significant wedge. Desert not spectacular but I think they know this hence the smaller choice of desert available and high price for desert. Would maybe go back if I was in the area, but not in any particular hurry.

Let's start with the not so good. The location is in a basement. Maybe the ventilation is not good enough so it smells a bit. But... Once the food arrives you won't remember that. The burgers are really good. I had one of the butter milk fried chien burgers and a milk shake and both were really good. The burgers come with fries or chips. The friends I think have rosemary salt on it which is a nice touch. The kids meals are a generous portion. The burgers can with one patty but otherwise it was the same as the adult burger. The kids milkshake is half portion but was otherwise the same as a full size one.

I enjoyed heading downstairs into The Fat Hippo and trying a Fat Hippo burger and waffle fries. The food was good but took quite a long time to be served after we ordered. This place reminds me of central European beer cellars because of its barrel ceiling and hospitable vibe.

Went there for a quick bite with my partner before catching the train back to London. We received a very warm welcome and were shown to our table. We took a bit of time to decide what to order and the staff were kind enough to come around a couple of times until we were ready. I ordered a chicken burger with a side of coleslaw, whereas my partner got a beef burger with a side of tater tots. The wait for the food was around 10-15 minutes. My chicken burger was a bit on the dry side, reason for which we asked for ketchup and mayo, which the staff brought very quickly. Overall both our dishes were very filling and tasted very good.

*EDITED TO ADD* *After making a complaint, the management of Fat Hippo Newcastle and Head Office have been brilliant - giving us a full explanation of what happened, and have offered a generous and helpful resolution to the issues we had. Really impressed with their customer service.* Very poor service, took over 45 mins for starters to come out and then another half hour after we'd finished them for the mains to arrive. Totally ignored and no apology or explanation given. Bill took a while to come as well, and although I chose a 10% tip (already generous after such bad service) I actually got charged 30% - the server didn't let me see the screen of the payment machine so I only realised the next day.

Had an excellent time here! The Vegan options were gorgeous, and different! Absolutely will be going out of my way to come back. My friends had meat options and said exactly the same, that the food was brilliant and very filling. Staff were attentive without being overbearing. Only downside was the toilets are more than a little grotty, but I can overlook that!

Amazing amazing amazing! The burgers were very big. Great size of fries and the purple 'slaw it's a must! Also never had onion rings this size, great flavours overall.

I came here with my partner and some family because we had tried the Fat Hippo in York in the past. We sat in the middle part of the restaurant near the bar which had a beautiful Christmas tree. We were allowed to bring our dog in and the staff were lovely brought him a bowl of water. Their food was very nice with vegan options for me since I can't eat meat or fish. I ordered a festive burger with a milkshake all of their shakes can be made vegan. They do a lot of burger type food however my mum isn't something who eats burgers and still enjoyed her meal a lot.

Absolutely loved our first night here. Splendid choice for our first anniversary dinner. So many options on the menu and the onion rings were amazing. The burgers we got were Kula Shaker and Great White Buffalo, great choices. Red dead Surrection was a really neat cocktail, the spice paired so well. It was a busy night but the ambience felt cosy and the staff was quick to accommodate us with a table and always checked in on us. Will be absolutely coming back again !

We had a great lunch here! The burgers and chips were amazing. The garlic chicken wings were BRILLIANT! We had two toddlers with us and they had a good meal. The server was welcoming and attentive. Only difficulty was getting the buggy in as you come in and have to immediately go down a full stair case. But we carried it down between us. It's worth it for the great burgers!

Fat Hippo will always be my go to restaurant when your craving food!!! On this occasion myself and my friend went on a Tuesday lunch time, we could easily get sat as it’s not too busy midweek. My friend opted for the Swiss Tony and myself the Born Slippy. Both with fries/waffles dirty style which I would recommend levelling up if you go. I’m addition to this I also got the onion rings to share, which are cooked to perfection. Totally crispy, juicy and flavourful. I’ve tried most of the beef burger menu now and I can say the Born Slippy is one of my favourite (you can always opt out of the jalapeños) Since we went a quite time I always expect any restaurant to have attentive service and we most definitely did. Always coming over asking if we wanted any more drinks and how are food was. Always notable that food came at a good time not too fast where you think it’s been microwaved and not too slow where you think they are still picking the ingredients out of the garden! If your in the area make this a must, please be noted it’s underground so sometimes you get very poor signal.

Honestly one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. Loads of flavour and perfectly cook. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was great. Highly recommended and will definitely go back next time we're in Newcastle.

Good location and atmosphere. Food looked good but unfortunately food lacked taste but was edible. Around 60 mins wait for food, no check-in to see how everything was.

I ordered the Semi-Parmed life chicken burger. Tasted awesome and the chicken was nice and crispy. Slightly messy burger, but often these style burgers are. The fries were lacking in seasoning however. Garlic Butter Mayo was nice.

I go here for the Cheesy Trash browns. Saturday was super busy. I would recommend try a week night over a weekend as there was a little bit of a wait for our food however staff were very polite and always service with a smile. I also recommend if your a fan of Real ale is the Fat hippo Pale ale from Allendale brewery.

Enjoyed our visit to the fat hippo, grabbing a couple of burgers and a shake. The service was too notch, our waiter was extremely attentive. Food was pretty good, a wide variety of choices and plentiful.

Food was fantastic - the best fried chicken burger I’ve ever had and my brother also really enjoyed his food. However, let down a bit by the service, as the servers weren’t very attentive even though it wasn’t very busy when we visited.

Had the most amazing burger ever. I ordered on of their chicken burgers and it was the most soft, mouth-melting, tasty chicken and burger I’ve ever had! My boyfriend had a beef burger and he said it was amazing as well! Fresh hand cut fries were over the top! Prices were around 14-16£ each burger. A must try dinner!!!

Amazing food. Great vegan and veggie options. We go back time and time again because it's so good. Definitely my fave burger place in Newcastle

  • 5/5 Adam B. 1 year ago on Google
Still the best burgers in Newcastle. Amazing range of both beef and chicken burgers, with good vegan and gluten free options too. Great variety of flavours means there'll be something for everyone, and each concept is executed perfectly. Fries are also great with lots of topping options. Highly recommend for a casual dining experience.

Insane food and great staff. This place is a must visit and I am sure all Fat Hippos are the same. You won’t be disappointed. Portion size is huge, so do feel you need to order loads. It is a very popular establishment, so ensure you book in advance. Top Tip: the Cheese Balls are nothing like you’ve tasted before. A must have

Me and my husband visited today on the recommendation of my niece, her husband and 13 year old daughter. We are so pleased we came, it was my husband's Birthday. Food was very tasty, best onion rings ever! We were advised before we came not to order starters and we were pleased we didn't. If we'd had starters I don't think we would have finished our main meal which would have been a shame. Waiters are very pleasant and do not hassle you when ordering. Loved everything about the place nd we will certainly return.

I am so glad I found this place, I Absolutely loved my order (chicken burger with loaded fries). The outdoor seating area is nice during the warm summer days. Service was good and I did not have to book in advance. On the other side I do think it’s quite pricey for Newcastle.

Amazing burger, excellent service from team (although manager who seated us didn't seem too happy about it). Also got a shake, can't wait for the Glasgow venue. We were a group of 11 on Saturday 12th Feb.

Tempted by the menu for this place as the photos looked insane! The food did deliver exactly as the pictures looked, but maybe we weren’t hungry enough as both meals seemed excessive! The taste and quality was great but after a while it all felt too greasy. The salad wedge although a simple item was absolutely delicious and needed to cut through the rest! Worth going but make sure you have an appetite
