Notre-Dame-de-L'Assomption Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Catholic Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It was built for 10 years, from 1904 to 1914. Finally, on December 20, 1914, the cathedral, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, was consecrated after ten years of work. It would be necessary to wait fourteen more years to celebrate the “solemn consecration” on December 13, 1928 after the installation in 1921 of a new carillon of four bells weighing a total of 4,763 kg (melted with the metal of the old ones installed 10 previously) , a Cavaillé-Coll organ installed two years later, as well as a marble and bronze altar. The cathedral, under renovation since 1968, was completely destroyed by the earthquake of January 12, 2010, which notably led to the death of the titular archbishop Mgr Joseph Miot, whose body was found the day after the disaster in the rubble of the archbishopric. Twelve years later, the debris has been cleared, but the pillars still standing continue to rise aimlessly towards an absent nave, which has become the symbol of the impossible reconstruction of the poorest country in the Americas. “This cathedral is like the country: on the ground, and not about to get up again.” Twelve years after the earthquake, the remains of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption continue to serve as a reminder of the scale of the task that remains to be accomplished.

Unfortunately the cathedral has been in ruins since the earthquake of 2010. It's too unstable to enter the ruins.

I started attending the Cathedral of Port-au-Prince since 2000. I am a member of a youth group (FDJ) and a superb choir called Sainte Cécile. I've had difficult times, of course, but there have been more good times.

For safety, nothing is garanteed, but if you would to leave for even some seconds the artificial life and experience the real one visiting, all around the Cathedral through the streets, thousands of young men and women who win their lives by reparing and reselling all kind of technology gadgets; that's wonderful and it worth it. So both experiences will help you have a clearer understanding of LIFE.
