Worst hotel experience ever. Room did not have enough towels for our family. Front desk did not have the key to linen storage.. would have to wait till morning. Took kids to pool which was freezing/ unheated. Hot tub is broken and covered with caution tape and a stop sign on it. Brought disappointed kids back up to the room to shower. Drain was clogged and backed up gunk from previous guests. Tub leaked on floor. We aborted showering. Front desk had no open rooms, so let us use a dirty room that has been missed by cleaning crew to shower. That shower also backed up too but not as badly. Decided to end our stay a day early and find another hotel. Things the hotel can’t control but also happened… wife was approached by a man in hallway while alone and asked back to his room. I had to go to the desk a half dozen times trying to sort things out and 3 times, the back door to the hotel was propped open. Lots of people in and out. I feel for the staff. They are stuck with few options, but you have them— stay somewhere else. Edit: talked with hotel maintenance manager the next day. The pool is maintained at 72-74 degrees. They intentionally keep it very cold.

DONT STAY HERE!!! My in-laws took everyone for a fun trip to the dunes. Hot tub and some exercise equipment were broken. The room was dirty, sunflower seed shells and fake nails on the floor and the SHEETS WERE NOT CHANGED FROM THE LAST GUEST!!! When we complained they told us that house keeping would come change them immediately instead of giving us a new fresh room…. Paint was peeling off the walls. There was vomit in the stairwell for 24 hours. My sister in-laws bathtub wouldn’t drain and it took more than 24 hours until it was fixed. We were all supposed to be next to each other but they lied and said the A/C was broken in the room…… but a half hour later the room was occupied by a new guest and the A/C was working just fine. Pool opened 2.5 hours late because they didn’t have towels. The pool area is obviously not cleaned regularly and smells strongly of mildew. Back door constantly propped open. Elevator broke down and A/C was not working in lots of areas. Breakfast was decent enough but they ran out of milk and some food options. Poor customer service, rarely someone at front desk. My wife and I and our two kids travel often. We have never stayed at a more unkept hotel or one with such pitiful customer service. Unbelievable experience for $179/night. Stay somewhere else!

This was my second time staying at this hotel and will be the last time I stay at this location. This hotel continues to go down hill. It is flat out super Dingy and Dirty! Everything from the lobby, elevator (atleast the one that worked), halls, breakfast area, room and bathroom all gross, from mirrors with hand prints, sticky floors in lobby and throughout the main floor, Halls and room carpets not vacuumed. Hair inside tub and on bathroom floor around toliet. Even in the sheets! Housekeeping staff knocked on door at 6:33 in the morning! Kept tapping and attempted to open door while waking my family up as I hollered were still in here! To pull shut quickly!!! Never asked for an in person wake up call when we came in traveling and checking in at 2 am! Paid 188.00 for last minute place to stay and wish I hadn’t. Went down to the front desk to ask for a Laundry bag to put dirty cloths in when the manager said to a housekeeper u can clock out we won’t need you for today. I so wanted to say are you kidding look at this place u might not have a full sold out hotel but there is plenty of cleaning and work to be done here. A grad party in the banquet room the night before had confetti, trash, sticky floors that all needed addressed. The only positive was the guy who took our breakfast order. He was helpful, friendly and amazing to kids. Speaking to them as if they were adults just as important as mom and dad. Service with a smile and very quick to help us grab whatever request was given.. This hotel needs a new management or new owner before it’s too late.

This is a dirty hotel. Carpets not clean, vents not clean and they have never defrosted their freezers in their refrigerators. Stains on carpet, sink was gross, trash on floor. They do not honor the Best Western Plus brand. No stars. The help did nothing but sit around. They don't clean the pool area, workout room and don't attend the breakfast area. They also had a gross chair at the front desk that was peeling and disgusting that needed to be in the dumpster. I do not recommend this hotel. They don't answer the phone and email does not work either.

Amber and Katelynn had us forgetting about the fact that the pool was closed down with their pleasant and positive customer service, they made our evening more enjoyable! Saturday morning breakfast was served by 2 more excellent employees Tiffany and Earl continued to have a smile on their face and was more than accommodating! We will be back when the pool is open , we truly enjoyed our stay !

My wife and I stayed one night at this property while driving from northern Wisconsin to southern Ohio. We stayed in room 111, just down the hall from the pool, and subsequently had a fair amount of hallway noise from other occupants using the pool. The room was adequate – a king bed, decent internet, and overall clean. I had a great deal for $110 – which is the amount I see as commensurate with this property…I wouldn’t pay more…I am a ‘Platinum’ Best Western member and stay often at Best Western properties when all I need is bed and shower, preferring Hilton or Drury properties when I’m onsite more. This property, like most Best Western properties, apparently doesn’t see the rewards status of folks staying as I am supposed to receive a complimentary bottle of water upon check-in – this only happens almost 100% of the time if I specifically mention my rewards status upon check-in…I didn’t highlight the fact I am a Platinum rewards member at check-in at this property and subsequently didn’t receive the complimentary water (not a big deal, but an issue that is endemic throughout Best Western properties and a characteristic of being a budget hotel compared to Hilton/Drury properties). Breakfast was disappointing – most items were empty when we visited the dining area at 0830. There was ample high protein vanilla bean yogurt (which satisfied me), but that was the extent of what was available (which dissatisfied my wife). I’m not sure if the hotel was busier than normal, or if there was a rush of folks that all went for breakfast earlier/at 0800, but it reflected poorly that majority of items were empty – to include the orange juice. If all you need is a bed and shower, and can get a room for $110, I would definitely stay here – if needing more, look elsewhere.

I originally planned to stay a night or two but I just can’t go home! I’ve been here for about 6 days. The rooms are spotless clean and this hotel has a bar that also serves food. Amber has been taking good care of me and she makes the best Salads !!

It appears there’s a softball tournament in the area this week, and so it seems like the hotel is mostly booked. However, our room smelled like pee. I know that sounds like something someone puts in a review for shock value. But the front desk person came to check out the room and gagged upon entering. Room was not cleaned well. Pull out bed was atrocious - stained and had a foul odor. Towels were stained, but no towels were available anywhere. To their credit, the front desk gentleman was embarrassed and apologetic. However, that doesn’t fix the condition of the room, and not being able to make any adjustment to our room was frustrating. Do not recommend staying here. Also, don’t be fooled by the copy and paste response from management in all these reviews - it would appear a lot of the issues we experienced have been ongoing without much change.

This was a last minute stop we made on our way to Michigan. We are rewards members so we seek Best Western on our travels. The staff was very welcoming. There is a little bar restaurant here. There is a wonderful woman who runs the entire thing Just like you're at home in her kitchen it was so nice to feel welcome after a long day on the road. She's wonderful with customers.. She works hard to make it everyone feel like family. Our experience with the room was that it was it's super clean with updated furnishings and very comfortable. We had a great night.. Air conditioning works really well. They use xfinity at this location my kids were thrilled. In the morning we went down to breakfast there was copious coffee in the breakfast room. The wonderful staff for breakfast made made us feel very welcome we were well cared for and I was greatly appreciative of their desire to make us happy they do a great job with breakfast. Overall we found the staff to be carrying kind and considerate. We definitely will choose this as a place to stay when we pass through Portage again or come to stay on a visit to the Indiana Dunes and I recommend it for you as well.

We used to love this place. This visit was awful. The room was dirty, housekeeping service was unavailable until finally one of the front desk workers came to clean the room. The towels were stained and dirty, there were not enough pool towels. The common areas, hallway, pool room, were very cold. The hot tub was out of order, emptied and not barrier around it making it dangerous. Sad to say we will not be staying here any longer.

I stayed here while passing through in a semi truck. Plenty of truck parking. The lot has a few serious potholes so be careful. Front desk lady was nice. I stayed in a room with two beds. She asked me not to mess up the other bed in the room so the cleaning ladys didn't have to change that bed in the morning. A little weird and unsanitary. If someone stayed in my room before me, I'd want both beds changed weather it looked used to not. She mentioned they were under staffed with cleaning ladys and they don't get all the rooms clean. Not something you want to hear while checking into a hotel LOL. My room was clean though. I did not check out the pool. Breakfast was great. Lots of options to eat. There's people walking around the parking lot and around the area with backpacks and what not. Definitely homeless people around. One guy was definitely on drugs walking around like a zombie on that tranq or bath salts. Keep your trucks and cars locked. There was a police car sitting in the parking lot for a while probably trying to get some of the loitering people to go away. I did see a couple people walking in and out of the hotel who looked homeless and hotel staff didn't even say anything to them. Just be mindful of your surroundings. Don't let kids or women wonder off alone. I have a family and if they were with me we definitely wouldn't be staying here. Not the best area. I do not recommend Denny's across the street. There is a dominos near by and a bar/restaurant down the road 2 blocks or so.

wonderful stay this time.😎👍🏼 way better than last year (last year 😏😠) It's one of the nicer older buildings around the area as far as hotels go and you can tell they've been making changes trying to make it a little more up-to-date and better.. If I have occasion to be in the area again that is where I will stay...

Room floors were not clean. Paint chipped on walls throughout the hotel. Bathtub was chipped with sharp edges. When asking the front desk if there would be coffee (8:30am) she replied, “eventually”. We left at 9 without coffee. The front desk staff did not make eye contact. Actually, the only words she said to me during check out was “throw your keys there.” Very unprofessional appearance and behavior from the front desk.

My husband and I went with our two kids and another couple and their kid. We were all thoroughly disappointed with our stay. It started with a 15min wait in what felt like a sauna (no AC in any lobby or hall areas) for someone to get to the checkin desk, as she was clearly working multiple jobs and they were clearly terribly understaffed. The lady was fabulous, very friendly and tried her best to accommodate us. We got to our room and it was clearly poorly cleaned, the sheets were either not changed or stained so badly cleaning didn’t help, the AC unit worked but there was no top to cover the buttons so the kids kept pushing them, the pull out couch was broken, had a dirty sheet on it, their was a comb that fell out when moving the couch cushions, the living area TV didn’t work and no one ever came to fix it, there were only 2 towels despite filling in the info for a family of 4, and no shampoo. We also never had housekeeping come, so I had to put our trash in the hall to keep from filling our room with it, that’s when I noticed that there was a napkin and dirty a-tip from previous guests still in there. This also meant, no clean replacement towels. We had no hot water the first night and the second day they replaced a hot water tank, however, they didn’t notify us so after using the restroom and realized we couldn’t flush nor wash our hands. I tried to call the front desk but the phone didn’t work. I went downstairs and that’s when she said the water would be off for probably another 30mins. Finally, the pool area was nice but the amount of chlorine was out of control. It hurt your eyes just sitting in the area and we all had red, watery, stinging eyes after even short periods in the pool. My son looked like he had an allergic reaction to something it was so bad. All in all, worst stay we’ve had and complete disappointment. Certainly would not recommend.

My room was clean. I’m taking off two stars for the noise. It was impossible to sleep past 6am because so many doors were slamming. I’ve never had that problem before, at other hotels.

I am currently staying here ,at Best Western Plus in Portage Indiana. The building is remodeled. looks nice from outside and from lobby!. we get to our room and the sink leaks underneath!. the beds are not comfortable!. nice big rooms. beds suck!. waited for morning with kids to try continental breakfast!. OMG the breakfast is horrible. undercooked!. Nothing worth eating!. We are from Saint Louis MO. This place was a huge disappointment!. We do not recommend this Hotel at all!. drive further to Valparaiso Indiana. Much nicer hotels and friendler people and workers!. The Hotel food was excellent in Valparaiso..

Our 2-Queen “suite” for 5 people had no sheets or pillows for the sofa bed. No shampoo, soap, or conditioner, and not enough towels for 5 people. Went to the front desk to get these items. The girl at the front desk on July 11th was very helpful. She was the only bright spot. The room was dirty, it smelled horrible. I swear there was a bullet hole in the bathroom wall and a blood stain on the floor by the bed. There were stains on the bedding and dirty pillows on the floor under the tv. Had we been able to get a refund, we would have left immediately. The breakfast looked so bad we went to Dunkin’. The pool was closed too. We stayed for one night on a pass through to home. Do not stay here even for that. Filthiest hotel we’ve ever stayed in. When we left our room to check out, a man went in it. No idea if he worked there or was homeless. There seemed to be an abundance of homeless people outside the hotel and in the lobby. Wish there was an option for no stars. We stayed at a Best Western Plus the night before in Albert Lea, MN which was completely different. Clean and food was edible.

Check in was fast and easy which was great after a long drive, our room was clean. Breakfast was great! everything tasted good and the guy running breakfast is wonderful, which is why im giving three stars. Our nightly rate was $189 and I expected a better kept hotel for that price but the furniture and amenities have seen better years. The pool water is not heated so be prepared for freezing cold water, my kids could not swim or play in the splash pad because the water was too cold. The hot tub is broken, it's boarded up and there's caution tape and a stop sign above it. You need to request housekeeping daily or they will not have your room cleaned.

Location was convenient. Staff was friendly. Rooms were so gross. First room we were put in was 112, sheets were NOT cleaned at all. There was food left in the pull out couch and on the floor from a previous guest. We were then switched to room 120. Pretty sure the sheets were not cleaned in there either on the pull out couch. The floor was definitely not vacuumed. Pool was nice, but it smelled in the pool room like someone peed near the closed hottub. They ran out of towels for the pool. Breakfast wasnt terrible.

This has got to be one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at. First room TV did not work. 2nd room TV did work, however bathroom smelled like an ash tray. Forget about using the pool or hot tub as they seem to be permanently closed. Breakfast is inedible and runs out by 7:30 AM. 2 towels in the room even though it’s for a family of 4! Keys did not work multiple times and had to get them replaced. They do not clean the rooms during your stay and most likely after you leave. Save yourself the money and hassle and do not stay here!!

The power went out twice in 18 hours, the last during checkout so no elevators or computers were available and we were severely delayed. An important personal item went missing and when we called the front desk, they said 'nothing was reported' and hung up without a breath in-between. I'd rather stay in a tent than this place.

  • 1/5 Michelle 1 year ago on Google
This place is awful! If you can keep driving do it! Our room was grimy and felt like it had not had a good cleaning in months. The carpet did not looked vacuumed, the furniture needed a good wipe down, and are towels were either not washed or stained. There were holes in the doors and big gouges in the furniture. The hallways are dirty and smelly too! The sign says breakfast starts at 6:00, when we went down for breakfast at 6:40 we were told breakfast doesn't start until 7:00.

Going to be as balanced as I can despite our experience, especially given current supply chain and employment challenges. Pros: Our king bed was very comfortable, room was huge, AC worked really well (rattled a bit). Gym equipment worked well. Shower pressure and temp was great. Neutrals: Worker at the desk looked like a patron, had black t-shirt on which appeared to be soiled, and no name tag. It confused me for a second. They also were courteous but not welcoming (not friendly, but not UNfriendly); not a big deal, I don’t expect it per say, but it’s worth mentioning. Cons (see photos): Tray for hand soap was soiled and had not been recently cleaned. Bathroom faucet wasn’t cleaned, and had toothpaste spittle on it (noticed when I brushed it with my hand). Toilet rolls were not hung, and it takes a special key to put them on, so either housekeeping doesn’t have they key or didn’t care. Tub fixture was coming apart. Bathtub wasn’t cleaned and had red soap residue (we hope) on the back side. One of the toiletry lotions was open and used when we arrived. Almost every room on the 2nd floor had the last room number broken off the plaque outside the door. Gym equipment needs service desperately. The equipment has a 1/4 mile track display, but would update to lap two after .76 of a mile. The belts creaked and need lubrication on the elliptical, and treadmill. No wipes for equipment so I had to wipe them down with hand sanitizer before and after; this left rubber residue all over my hands. Ceiling in the gym had water damage on most tiles. In our room the phone and lamp were unplugged for some odd reason, and very dirty. Outlet by the bed did not work, which may be why nothing was plugged into it. Office chair in the room is in permanent recliner mode. Would definitely chose somewhere else in the future.

It was my daughter's birthday and she wanted to swim. I though this would be a good place I was terribly disappointed. The hotel was disgusting and smelled horrible. Check in was at 3pm and at 6pm my room was still not ready. We decided to let the kids swim until our room was ready the pool had heavy amounts of chlorine in it there was chlorine tablets coming out of the pool as my kids and others swam around. There was chlorine tablets on the table and everywhere around the pool. The pool area was disgusting the workoutbroom was nasty had old bottles on the floor by the time I was done canceling my reservation the kids eyes were burning so bad from the water. There was one housekeeper working the manager acted like she didn't know what she was doing and neither did the girl taking the reservation. Never again will I come here and definitely wouldn't recommend it.

It was near Indiana Dunes National Park. That is the only positive thing I can say. It was absolutely gross. The entire hotel had an odor. The room smelled so terrible. If it hadn't been 11 at night when we got there with 2 kids we would have left. The breakfast was sketchy. Stuck with things in packages. The tile was sticky everywhere. The pool which was a selling point when I booked was a shade of green and the chemical smell was so strong it burned my eyes. Do not stay here.

We enjoyed the comfortable beds, but our room must not have been vacuumed because we had little rocks all over the floor. The breakfast was okay and we appreciated some hot options, but my kids were disappointed to have no pancake or waffle maker. It was a decent hotel, but expensive for what we got.

There was no bedding for the pull out, had to make several requests. The entire hotel smelled like each room Was actively deep frying food 24 hours a day. IT STUNK. Walls were dirty, pull out bed was so stained we were too grossed out to use it and brought in an inflatable mattress. Did I mention how bad the building smelled? The minute we came in the front door I was regretful of paying in advance. I gazed longingly at the Holiday Inn Express across the street for 2 days. Never again.

Went there yesterday 3/25 check in was a headache took almost 20 minutes because I booked online and they was trying to charge me twice. I got the room specially for the pool to take my kids too, for their last day of spring break. What a joke!! The pool room it self felt like it was warm maybe 75 degrees in there, smelt horrible like strong fumes from all the chemicals, the hot tub was green and a motor was hanging out of it so we asked a lady at the front desk is it not functioning? She sent a maintenance man and he put up a red stop sign and opened the exit doors which then let all the heat out the room. This is Indiana the temperature outside was currently in the 30’s that day. The pool itself was freezing cold!!! Felt like an ice bath we asked the front desk lady again can they raise the heat in the pool and she replied it’s not heated 😱 I’m pretty sure u cannot have an indoor pool that’s not heated! I mean an outdoor pool sure because the sun will help warm it but how can they have an indoor year round pool advertised and not be heated??? So before me and my kids got hypothermia we left and went back up to the room to change and get warm. The room itself was nasty it had dry blood on the wall and hand prints all over the headboard we decided we had enough so we left. The front desk didn’t even ask why we were leaving after being there only 40 minutes (they must see people leave a lot after checking in) she was more so like I get it say less. We will never be returning to this location please save yourself and your family the trouble just pay the extra and go to the county inn down the street.

By an hour into breakfast there was little to not much food. Food quality and presentation was poor. Food servicer had don't care attitude and seemed disengaged. Quality of breakfast was at best a one (1). Towels in rooms were washed but very soiled and stained. I would not have given a guest in my home towels that looked like them. Front desk worker Melanie was excellent. Melanie is excellent at engaging with all guest and making them feel welcomed and at home. She is the ONLY reason we didn't cancel the rest of our stay at this hotel.

This is our 2nd or 3rd stay here, we come every summer. The rooms appear newly renovated! We slept great! They seem to be short staffed- our room wasn’t ready at 3, they told us to wait 10 minutes, we waited 15 and they were still cleaning our room as we approached- they did a great job though. The breakfast attendant didn’t show so breakfast was drinks, yogurt, and cereal only. The pool is closed. I asked how long it had been closed and was told a few months and it would be closed for a few more- scheduled to open in October.

This was our second time staying here. Our first time was wonderful, thus why we came back a second time. Sadly this time it was an awful experience during check in the staff was rude and dismissive. When we got to our room their was trash still on the floor and things in the fridge. The shower never fully shut off. During our 2 night visit our cards stopped working 2 times, and when it came to finding someone to reactivate our cards we had to yell until someone showed up. They don't clean and left red solo cups all over their lobby and in their bathrooms including in the TOLIETS. very disappointed and will not be bringing my family back to this hotel.

This place was so disgusting we walked into our room and turned right around and walked out. We weren't informed once that the pool was closed, walked into our room and there were chewed sunflower seeds on the floor, carpets had stains ALL over them. There was hair all over the bathroom. sink and tub both had water marks on them showing that it had not been wiped down. We did not try checking in early, we were actually about an hour past check in time, so in no way were they rushed. to make matters worse, our trip was paid for via travelocity in advance, somehow they "didn't see" and charged my husband the ENTIRE amount of the room when he checked in. He thought they were just holding the card should there be any charges, They didn't even inform him they were running the card. We spoke with the manager and informed her we were leaving and she said she would clear that we left and issue a refund not only on the additional charges they gave us, but also on behalf of travelocity when they called. She has in fact not, stood to her word, and has dodged or calls and not returned them everytime we, our bank, or travelocity tries to get in touch. This place was filthy, terrible, gross. I wanted to give my kids a good vacation after the year they've had, and it was ruined. a motel 8 would be better than this.

Not bad at all suite is little out dated but the bed is comfy and then pillows are perfect. Little pricey for the area. But staff was cool.

  • 5/5 Rachel 2 years ago on Google
Clean room, very friendly & helpful staff - they get 5 stars. Be warned that the room I stayed in didn't have an USB port, so make sure that you bring a wall charger. Hot tub was barely above room temp. And I personally prefer higher water pressure & hotter water Temps. Breakfast was good and plenty of coffee Overall a good place to crash after a day of hiking the Dunes.
