One of the famous local food in Porto is Francesinha and this restaurant is famous for it. Arrived at 6.30pm and the restaurant was quite empty but it filled up by the time I left at 7.15pm. Ordered their Francesinha with a small beer. It’s basically a toasted sandwich with beef steak, sausages and a fried egg over melted cheese. Came with heap loads of French fries and their sauce. It’s quite a unique looking sandwich but a challenge to eat it so you have to cut it into smaller pieces. Not bad in terms of taste, especially liked the beef steak which was cooked medium well and the red sausage with their crunchy skin. Total damage came up to be Euro 13.

Had to try the infamous FRANCESINHA whilst is Porto. There were several recommendations to try it at this restaurant. Not knowing what to expect or having little to no expectations, this was lovely. Our waitress, Andrea was also lovely and guided me though the ordering process and advised which was the best for a first timer and also what it contained and how to eat it. It's definitely an extremely filling meal and I'd suggest only having this. The food was delicious in this very busy place and so was the service. Everything was quick and efficient as they so had to turn tables as they're that busy. Definitely try this meal and restaurant when in Porto.

I heard the hype about Cafe Santiago’s famous Francesinha sandwich. And while I was so excited to try it based on its looks alone, the taste didn’t deliver. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an absolute marvel to look at, stacked high with melted cheese and egg, surrounded by a moat of flies and sauce. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a ton of flavour and not something I’d want to try again.

Such a good sandwich, a must try when in Porto. It is pretty big, so make sure you’re not full before trying it. We went during the weekend and there was a queue outside, but in approximately 10-15 minutes we got a table. Strongly recommend.

What a great meal. They say it’s the best Francesinha in Porto, and I have no doubt. It’s worth the wait, if you have to. AND, don’t get cheap, have the number 1, especially if you only plan to eat this once while you’re here. Service was outstanding, especially given one person looks after the entire outside patio. Be sure to go inside, if even just to look around and watch them being made. Great experience, great food, great service. 🌟 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Had to try the Franchesina here, as it is raved about in reviews. The fries was old and unsalted, it felt like it was made earlier in the day just in preparation of the tourist storm. The whole place felt like it was a victim of their own success and the staff was not having it. Not particularly impressed by the place or the franchesina unfortunately.

The Francesca was interesting. It's a super intense sandwich filled with steak, sausages and ham, and topped with cheese and egg and special sauce. I probably lost a few years of my life just eating it. In the realm of comfort foods it's a whole new level. That said - service here was practically nonexistent. And the pork chop was really boring. Probably the only thing to get here is the Francesca.

Not my favorite meal in Porto. Don't get me wrong; it's alright. It just doesn't live up to the hype. I mainly tried it since it's famous, but wouldn't eat Francesinha again. I can only imagine this being good if you are high.

This place was recommended by our host at the place we stayed at. It was our last day and we weren’t hungry then. We decided to stop by before leaving and it was the best choice ever. We didn’t know what to expect for a francesinha to taste like. We thought maybe a crazy poutine. It was good. Wasn’t too salty or too cheesy.

Had to come and try the famous francesinha, and it didn't disappoint. Was really good. Google maps isn't correct as it was shut but the one we went to was a few doors down. A little wait but not long at all. Service is very quick and efficient

The food was pretty good but the service was quite awful The man was pretty rude and told us that we cannot enter because there were too many people waiting but there were actually only two groups in front of us After arguing a bit we ended up still getting a table but the experience wasn’t nice Recommend the soup though it really is pretty good

  • 5/5 Jessica L. 3 years ago on Google
I thought the signature sandwich would be super heavy and it's just a gimmick to attract tourists. I was wrong. It was a tasty sandwich with a combination of different meats, and if you get the fries on the side, the combination of gravy and cheese makes it taste like poutine. We ended up ordering a second one. Yum!

This is a difficult one. This place is so popular and puts a lot of pressure on reviewers to be as accurate as possible. Regarding the food. I did live up to its reputation. I could taste every single ingredient. And the spicy touch made even more enjoyable. On the other hand, the reason why I didn’t rate this place 5* is because I sincerely thought the service could have been better. It might be that I was unlucky by going there at the wrong time. No. There is never a wrong time for a good or bad service. Service is such an important component in the hospitality industry and should never be ignored. Should an OKAY service not bother you, Café Santiago will definitely surprise you.

❗ if you ever visit Porto you have to try the franchesinha, and the one from Santiago seems to be the best in place❗ ❗overall ⭐⭐⭐⭐ expensive for being what it is but very good! you'll be full once finished it so i recommend going for a walk afterward 😜 🥪 franchesinha ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🤤 delicious, big enough to fill you and rich in ingredients! 4 start for the price 😬 🛋️ atmosphere ⭐⭐⭐⭐ meh it's kinda a fast food but it's expensive, the furniture though is not bad!

Yummy yummy! I’ve tried the francesinha in different places and this is by far the best one; ingredients are very fresh, meat is tender, and the sauce is delicious. I also tried the cachorro sandwich and it was really good too. This is definitely the place to try the francesinha when visiting Porto.

Multiple locations within the same block, this places serves the signature sandwich that Porto is famous for. Good but not exceptional, its probably one of those things you love if you grew up with it. Sort of like the local beloved joint that outsiders don't get. The steak could be more juicer, the sauce needs more umami but the fries are decent this far from Belgium.

We definitely left this cafe full and satisfied! The menu was straightforward and easy to navigate through. However we came for the most popular breakfast dish, the Franchesinza. We were amazed at the presentation and the ingredients it had and all thoroughly enjoyed it. It was layered with different types of meat, topped with cheese, an egg and surrounded with chips and a sauce. A really delicious local delicacy to try!

If you want to eat delicious food for a REALLY GOOD PRICE, this is your place. The food was amazing and the place was packed and overflowing with guests, desperately wanting to eat here. The Radler was one of the best I have tried since visiting Germany. It’s really good. The food was fresh and well cooked. The meat was juicy and came just at the right temperature. 👏🏼 Although the place was packed, the service was good and we didn’t have any long waiting time. Only one thing to add on to make the experience perfect is some nice Portuguese music to create some more atmosphere. Overall very recommendable!

First Francesinha in Porto, meat or cheese lover would love it. The beef was cooked medium. The sauce was tasty. Lots of what I assume is Gouda cheeses on top of it. French is ok. Majority of the customers ordered it on their table and didn’t seem to see food left on the plate. It’s like a fast food type of restaurant so won’t expect much service, staffs were busy but friendly. The restaurant was busy at around 2pm, we could only get a seat at the bar. Recommended.

We didn't want to have Francesinha more than once in Portugal as we didn't want to clog our arteries too much so we settled for this place. The Francensinha is MASSIVE. It's hearty and hard to finish by yourself. I would say pay extra and just share one Francensinhas as that is an option at this restaurant which is great. We got the calde verde which I must say was my favourite. It was creamy and had lots of the collard greens in it. Wasn't overly salty and reminded me of home. The pork with potatoes I would pass on next time. It was dry and hard to stomach. Overall get the calde verde and share the francensinha with someone. The service is okay. Kind of slow when trying to get the bill but other than that no big issues

(Translated by Google) Restaurant very well situated. Several dining rooms not very large but tables well distributed! Fast and very friendly service! The francesinha is made with high quality ingredients. My only "negative" criticism is for the francesinha sauce, which, in my view, falls far short of what was expected given the awards received and fame! It's a sweeter than normal sauce.

Infamous spot to grab a Portuguese Francesinha. A revolving door of patrons clamoring to grab a seat, so don't expect the best service 😉. All in all worth the trouble if in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way for one. Helpful tip: Get there right when they open as the place gets packed quick (they open at noon as opposed to 11:30am, suggested by Google maps;)

The 4 of us have to split two portions of the famous Francesinha (with every possible sides that's on the menu). It's a nice breakfast and quite filling, but I think it's not too special of a dish. Definitely worth a try though, for the price if nothing else.

I really enjoyed tasting the famous traditional dish here, it was delicious. I didn’t gave a 5 star’s review because the staff can be a bit more polite and understanding, unless they don’t want tourists to come here.. also it can be a little bit more clean..

Local dish Francesinha is a must try, and it's really tasty! Prices are okay, not too expensive. Waiter was also really nice, he asked us where we were from, and tried to speak to us in our language, which I thought was really sweet. Expect to wait a bit though, as it's usually full, but definitely worth the wait.

This is a great, well known place to eat Porto's signature food: francesinhas. The restaurant is famous for it so it's often crowded with lines at the door, especially on peak hours like lunch and dinner. Prices are average for the city. Beyond francesinhas, the restaurant serves several Portuguese dishes, sandwiches, and beverages and the servers are very welcoming. Not accessible to wheelchairs as the entrance has stairs and the interior of the restaurant is fairly small.

Staff is really friendly and the food is delicious! The place is extremely popular, even during weekdays, so make a reservation or arrive there as soon as it opens! I had the traditional Francesinha (the sandwich is HUGE, you can easily share, which is an option in the menu).

We came here in the early afternoon to try their francesinhas as they come highly recommended. We also got the bacalhau. The cafe was full even though it was in between meals. It's very much a working man's cafe, and we enjoyed eating with all the locals.

The one and only! There are many places in town to get an excellent Francesinha, but I always find a way to come back to Café Santiago for my fix of this sandwich. More than a simple sandwich, this is a wholesome meal that is usually found on the menus of traditional restaurants all over northern Portugal. Among the numerous stories about its origins, probably the most believable claims that it was inspired by the famous croque-monsieur, a French sandwich enjoyed by many Portuguese immigrants. In any case, it is delicious and worth every single calorie, and washes down beautifully with a local Super Bock. Definitely one of best sandwiches in the world!

Black beer of super rock is highly recommended. Just the same taste as I remember in my school years. The "little french" Francesinha is quite salty for me but I loved the idea and the general taste. I recommend you to try this specialty here in Santiago. I ordered a max. If you have a small stomach, better to order a smaller size (my husband ordered a smaller one).

We ended up at this Cafe Santiago thinking we had arrived at the other Cafe Santiago further up. Oh well. The francesinha was really good. It was our first time. Good meal after a long day of walking around. I couldn’t finish mine as it is a heavy dish (I’m a petite 50kg female) but my husband finished his. Yum!

(Translated by Google) First of all, Francesegna was just the taste I thought. I feel sweet and salty. It was okay to eat with that taste. I can drink it with cola! But the pork menu we ordered was too bad.. The meat smelled, and the menu itself didn't harmonize.. Here, it's recommended to just order Française. And the staff were unfriendly because they all left. We had more people and came earlier, but lately, we sat in an uncomfortable bar seat, and the locals who came later were very upset to see them seated at a large table. According to other reviews, it seems that there is severe discrimination from locals. (Translated by Google) We stopped at this place because it had been recommended to us if we wanted to try the famous French girls. It is a caloric bomb but it is very good, for my taste. The red / orange sauce that is ve reminded me a lot of the typical mussel sauce based on paprika, flour, onion fine, I reckon it will go there. Also similar to the salsa of the patatas bravas that they give in some places, like El Bodegón de Ponferrada. The truth is that I have only eaten this dish in this restaurant, but I would recommend it. Good taste, taste, and the price, although not cheap (Portugal is not what it used to be) was manageable, about € 10.

(Translated by Google) Great food ... I don't consider it adequate in relation to the covid containment measures given that it receives a lot of people in a closed and narrow space and even though there are plastic divisions between tables, the counter that is right next to it fills with people also having meals and without any type of distance. Francesinha was on top. Very tasty but beware, one of this serves as a good brunch or a late lunch to not to have dinner. It's a bomb... A really delicious one

One of the best places to try the famous franchesina. The place has a wide variety of franchesina at very good prices. You can choose basic franchesina or one with more tender meat. When I visited this place during weekday at around mid day was packed. If you wish to eat franchesina you can't go wrong here.

Amazing place; I got recommended this place from my local friends as the best one to try the “Francesinha” and it exceeded my expectations. The food was sooo delicious! I loved the place also the staff was very friendly and welcoming! Next time I am in town I will repeat!

Iconic restaurant in Porto. We got recommended by a local who knew very well this place was great. The most famous plate, Francesinha, is an absolute must if you visit this city. We had to wait for about 45 minutes to get into the restaurant, but they were totally worth it!

Very quick service and welcoming staff. Went there for the francesina, as I was told that it is the best in town and it was indeed really good. Might be a bit crowded but I feel like it is more of an in and out, rather than a whole evening stay kind of place. I stayed at the bar, which was cool, as I could see how they prepare francesina. Props to the staff serving so many people a day!

A must-stop spot to try the emblematic Porto Francesinha, service was quick and friendly and most importantly, the francesinha was tasty and fresh. Be sure to be very hungry before you come as it is a huge portion and comes with fries!

If you are brave to try Francesinha. This is the only place you should visit! It’s a interesting food experience, never had this kind of sandwich in my life. I won’t miss it but definitely talk about this with friends.

Came early at 12:05 pm for the famous francesinha. The cafe was already packed. We found the last table to sit down, and ordered 2 signature francesinha #1 & #2 to share among 3 of us, paired with black beer. It really did not disappoint us - Very tasty and fulfilling. The waiters were all very attentive with cheerful attitude. We really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. It matches the “hype”.

My friend suggested me to come here to eat "Francesinha". Very popular sandwich in Porto. Was tasty, but very big for me and i can't eat such kind of dishes very often 😀 The service was perfect, quickly and the personal is very cool.

This casual eatery with a reputation for the best Francesinha definitely lives up to the hype. The Santiago Francesinha has four layers of meat, with hearty white bread, covered in cheese, with an egg on top, sitting in a zesty tomato beer sauce with a pile of fries in the juice. It's an incredible sandwich and was part of a great meal with a salad, chicken soup, a half bottle of red wine and a local Super Brock at this local favorite.

It’s… good. Is it the best sandwich ever? Definitely not. It’s an extremely big portion for a sandwich and honestly quite a costly experience for what it was. I would recommend trying if you are in Porto, at the end it’s a local master-sandwich, but I don’t think more than once per trip would be worth recommending. If you are not into super fatty super high calories meals, just skip this and buy yourself a bottle of port instead.

Cocktails, cocktails and cocktails! We are currently traveling the world and these are up there with the best! Thanks to the female cocktail maker! The staff are great and the food is exceptional! A real quality place that will not disappoint! Avoid the tourist traps and go for some decent quality- enjoy!

Was told by several people that this place does the best Francesinha in the city. I didn't try any others while I was there to be able to confirm this but it was certainly a delicious meaty feast that filled me up and left me satisfied. Nicely unfussy in its decor and felt a bit less touristy and more authentic than many other places. Price seemed very reasonable too so it's definitely worth checking it out!

WOW. Franceshina is an amazing dish. And you know this is the spot when even local police come to eat here (locals always know best). A must in Porto

After 40 minutes in the que finally we got a table! We ordered the famous Francensinha Santiago and Cachorro Santiago both are typical Portugese food. They were very tasty! The fried bread layered with beef, ham, covered with melted cheese and fried egg on top of it in the bed of red sous was very delicious. It's a must try when you are in Porto. Friendly staff. Not expensive! They also serve other dishes like fish and salad.

When in Porto I think it’s worth it to try a francesinha, since it was first invented here. The cafe was pretty decent and felt pretty no frills. The sandwich itself is quite big and pretty good, though it’s best to come with an appetite. It’s no ordinary sandwich and it’s best to eat it with utensils.

Reasonable experience Pros: Typical tasteful Porto Francesinha. Pretty large and it came with a savory portion of fried potatoes and the somewhat spicy sauce. Cons: 1. Place was a bit crowded and noisy 2. Way too much waiting time 3. Whilst good, potato portion wasn't particularly big
