Whether or not you are a fan of Harry Potter, this bookstore is one of the must-visit places in Porto. I would say that getting your ticket online is a MUST if you don't want to waste a lot of time in the queue. Seriously, the lines at this place are insane. When you book your ticket online you can select the time you want to enter and it is important that you are there at that time. Thanks to this you will be able to avoid the queues (at least we were able to avoid the queue the time we went thanks to this). When you arrive at the site, tell them that you have reserved for X hour and they will tell you what to do. The bookstore is beautiful, it looks like something out of a story. Of course, if you want to take a photo without people... good luck because it is practically impossible unless you arrive first thing in the morning. Inside you can find a wide variety of books and also Portuguese literature. They have their own bookstore collection with some of the most iconic books, these having special covers and decoration. With your ticket you have a discount of 5 € to buy books (the price of the ticket). In short, a must-see in Porto, as long as you book online and manage to avoid the queue, because if you don't, you will wait a long time in line, losing time for other activities that you can do in the city.

A huge range of books (English, French and Portuguese), and the editions made in store have beautiful design art and covers. It's worth the price, in my opinion. The place was extremely busy and felt a little cramped at times. Staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful. The architecture was gorgeous; it was worth a visit just for the view of the stairs & ceiling. The cost to get in is €8pp (book online and scan the ticket to enter), but you can redeem the cost against any book you buy per person.

Beautifully designed. Total tourist trap. Small book store with a very limited selection of books. Definitely caters to tourists with the book selection. €5 entrance charge but they do credit you that much if you purchase a book. The stairway is beautiful but good luck getting a picture without someone posing on it. The staff was very friendly. Not really worth the wait in line if you are looking for an actual book and not just a social media post. But the staff was nice and it is beautiful inside.

It’s a beautiful library, but there’s SO many people… The space felt as crowded as the metro during rush hour, and you definitely need to buy tickets online. There’s more classic books than modern ones, and there are books in French, English, Portuguese, and Spanish.

It's worthwhile to wait 2 hours in the rain to visit the LL. After you step into the front door, you feel the whole world is changed. The atmosphere naturally brings books to you even you are not in the mood. It seems you have the key to open any door and it is so different from the noisy outside. It is one of my lucky days to be there on their 118-year anniversary celebration. Besides the admission is free, you got a piece of free yummy cake! There are some collections on the back of the 3rd floor. I wish I could spend more time there.

We found it to be a highly overrated place. It is definitely not the most beautiful bookshop there is … have you seen antique book shops in old university cities? This one is nowhere near… You buy a time ticket, still wait in a line for 15 minutes, you enter with a huge crowd, it’s packed, humid, everybody is coughing and sneezing around you. You can’t see the surroundings and take nice photos, as it is full with people. You can use the value of your 5 euro ticket to purchase something in a the shop, but the cheapest item is 10 euro and it is useless (a mug)

If you’re a fan of books or architecture then this is a must visit location for you in Porto. It’s worth every second of queuing. You must book tickets online for a certain time slot. Do not make the mistake of not booking as they turn people away. Take your time once you’re in the shop and look around properly. Some books are mixed languages around the shop. The staff are very helpful. They have some of their own special editions which are beautiful. Do not visit Porto without stopping here.

Very beautiful aesthetics inside. The booking process to get into the library was relatively easy if you know how to order tickets online. The inside was very well designed and inspired the Harry Potter universe with its aesthetics. There was a huge selection of books including French, English, and Portuguese literature. Of note, they sold special versions of certain books, such as The Little Prince, storybook stories, etc. The ticket that you pay counts towards books that you buy, so it's a good idea to buy some books as souvenirs.

The bookshop certainly deserves its reputation as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. However, the price to pay for a short and unsatisfactory visit is quite high in time and money. First of all, the queue lasts at least an hour due to their poor organization: it would be more logical to stagger the reservations of the entrances by time but they don't. Furthermore, it is not possible to book the entrance ticket from the website (5 euros, not a few) because, I quote the words of a saleswoman, "the banks do not cooperate". Isn't it the fault of the site that doesn't work well? For this reason I had to pay the ticket there (paying 6 euros) by queuing up a lot. It must be said that by paying the "modest" amount of 15 euros you can skip the line directly. However, given that the price of the 5 and 6 euro ticket entitles you to an equivalent discount on a book purchased inside, if this mechanism also applies to the 15 ticket, then it would be the most convenient. Once inside, if you have tolerance for the mass of crowded tourists, you will be impressed by the wonderful staircase. There are also beautiful editions of the bookshop, certainly expensives, but which you can pay less by taking advantage of the discount you are entitled to with the entrance ticket. It is a pity that there are not many books published by Lello, in particular too few Portuguese authors, and that the other editions simply suck, especially considering the price. Obviously, given the enormous tourist flow, the books on display are almost all ruined (in case you want to buy, ask the shop assistants if they have any others in stock) and in English. Finally, I recommend the large shopping bag: 15 cents and you can take home an extra beautiful souvenir!

It is a beautiful store. Wish I had nore time but too crowded cant blame people for wanting to go. I wanted to enjoy the craftsmanship of the work in the walls and shelves. Its a work of art. Could not get great pics because of the crowd but seeing it was suffice!

Make a reservation online, skip the ticket line, and save 1€. Unfortunately their site is offline more than it is on so you will have to be patient. Figure 1 to 2 hour wait if you do not have tickets. Inside was hot and crowded. Smaller than I thought. Interior was interesting, but if you are not a Harry Potter fan, you might want skip it.

What a highlight when in Porto ! Definitely buy tickets online before going, and expect lineups, even with a scheduled time. It is well worth a bit of a wait. We arrived 1/2 hour earlier and there were lots of people already in line. Everyone does get in, though, and it's a photographer's delight. With a grand staircase and beautiful wood bookcases filled with old books, it's a great way to spend an hour. Of course, Harry Potter fans will love this place.

The bookstore was amazing to visit just to see the spectacular design of the inside. There is a long wait to buy tickets so you should definitely purchase them ahead of time if you can. Once inside, the bookstore is extremely crowded, so it's not very easy to spend too much time in one particular area. We wished they had souvenirs to purchase, but they did have some small books that were literature classics printed specifically for the bookstore so they had a unique look to them and could be considered a sort of souvenir. Ultimately, we probably spent about 15 minutes total inside.

A phenomenal place to visit! You get back in time in a place that has all the bells and whistles! Every detail is amazing - from the central staircase to the ceiling and side columns! Soak up the atmosphere of the grandeur of past times... They do have some organization in place but it is still quite crowded! €5 to get in which goes towards your purchase if you buy a book. I would highly recommend making that ticket purchase online and prior to getting there because the line is quite long. The online purchase puts you on the shorter- fast track line. The prints are elegant with gold finishes - they make a great gift! You can also pick a recipe book or a city guide with amazing photos! I would highly recommend this place!

You should definitely make a reservation. And please buy the ticket, which is 15.90€. They cannot manage capacity. And overcrowded you waiting long time probably. The most suitable books are 15.90€, so pay this fee, buy books and get fast entry. It's a pretty nice place inside, worth a trip. Decorations and art details are great. I’m sure that you feel like you're in a magical place. Staircase is so nice to take a photo. Visit for a great experience. If you're looking to buy books, I'd recommend the special editions that this place has made themselves.

The book store that inspired Harry Potter is worth the time while visiting Porto. Get your tickets online is the best way to get in. Be prepared to wait in line. It took us around 20 minutes to get inside. Once inside marvel at the amazing architecture and pick up a book to take with you!

In my opinion, if you are a Harry Potter fan probably it's worth visiting this place. I will not visit it twice because I thought this was only a bookstore with a little story of the history and luck of the fame story. I suggest you get here in the early morning because starting from the afternoon the queue is always amazing. The famous red stairs will be the main in here, you need to get creative to take the photos. You also could buy the books with a discount if you purchase the ticket, one of the benefits of this place! Enjoy your time in Porto!!😌

We walked up from our Apartment on Douro river... 30 minute walk. Very interesting to walk though ... 5 Euros each but if you buy a book that 5 Euros goes towards it. Buy your tickets on line with the time you want to go in. So much easier than doing a line up to buy tickets... when wait until the time that is given to you to get in another line to enter.

You should buy a ticket in advance, otherwise you will be disappointed after queuing. The ticket gets you the same monetary value off a book, which cost around 15 euros. Be prepared to queue, this is a very popular destination, but it is worth it. The store really does feel magical, and should not be skipped if visiting Porto. The most beautiful bookshop in the world lives up to its moniker.

Loved the interior of the bookstore, the staff is very helpful as well. The book fiction selection is mainly in Portuguese of course, there is a small English section, French and Spanish. The first floor is dedicated to art and design, very good selection of culinary books. We queued for 2 hours (even if we were told it was going to take 3 and a half hours), as the weather was good it didn’t feel very long, but bring something to read or listen to in the meantime to make the wait a little more entertaining. Due to the COVID situation the overall experience is great as inside is not crowded and they are very attentive to all measures. Beautiful bookstore that I recommend visiting.

Most overrated shop in Portugal. Not worth the line neither the price. You wont buy books there because there are only classics overpriced. If you want take a picture through the window, but don't go in.

Pretty cool spot! 5€ entrance fee but you get 5€ off a book purchase. Buy your tickets online, they have a QR code out front. Because we had our tickets we didn’t have to wait, it was pretty busy inside. We came around 5:30pm on a week day. Hard to get a photo on the stairs. Book selection is limited but they have different languages available. They had illustrated versions of all the Harry Potter books. I would definitely stop by here.

Must visit. Its a very old bookstore with beautiful architecture and spiral staircase. I would recommend booking in advance as it is a really popular spot and there are long queues outside the store. In case you haven't been able to book, there is a qr code outside the library that you can use to book a ticket instantly. However, it takes a while to fill out all the information and ticket arrives in your mailbox after 15 mins. Just take your time and soak in the beautiful woodwork all around the bookstore, don't forget to look at the ceiling.

Very pretty, but very busy place. You can take cute pictures on the staircase inside at the end of every 30 mins when most of the people left the library again according to the time windows. Only a few books can be bought with the gold ticket, mainly the small classics.

This is a really nice little book shop. You need to purchase tickets online beforehand. We were in the queue in the pouring rain when an employee noticed our 6 year old daughter waiting with us and directed us to the front of the queue. It was very much appreciated. Inside the book shop there are many people. It can be hard to navigate at times. They have a small selection of English language books. They don’t have many books for children in English, but my daughter still had fun browsing the Portuguese language children’s books. In total, we paid €15 for the three of us to enter. We purchased a book and we applied the cost of one ticket towards the book.

It is certainly a beautiful library that mainly focuses in universal literature in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French. It is a nice place to visit, despite the fact that it has become a bit of a tourist trap. You may have to wait in the line for hours to access to a library that’s full of people. The best time of the day to visit, is in the late afternoon, right before the place closes. It is also better to get your tickets online previously. If you love books, and have the time to spend in a line, you should visit this place.

Livraria Lello is absolutely enchanting, like a wizard's library straight out of a magical world! The staircase and book arrangement add a whimsical touch, making it a dream spot for book lovers. Kids were over the moon, rating it 10 out of 10 magical stars! 📚✨ Tickets cost about €8 per head online. On the downside, the long queue even on a rainy day and the bustling crowds inside were a bit of a dampener. The queue is long for online purchased time slot tickets. Despite that, the magical vibes made it a memorable experience for all.

It is a pretty bookstore indeed. However, the crowds are too much. It’s difficult to walk inside and to find the book in peace. I don’t think this is the place to go if you genuinely want to get a book. As a tourist, sure it is a great experience, and you get to buy a book so you can bring not your typical souvenirs back home.

Such a beautiful place worth the visit while you are in Porto. You can buy two different tickets one is for the big line that could take up to 45 minutes. Or there is another premium ticket 3 times more expensive than a regular ticket but you will have immediate access. Don't forget to buy one of the most good looking books you can ever find (the ticket is worth 5€ that will be discounted in your purchase)

Very beautiful library. Do not wait in line to enter. If there are a lot of people waiting (as I suppose it is always like this) just buy your ticket online. You ll receive it by email within 2-3 minutes and you can use the always empty "online ticket" line. The inside is very beautiful but very crowded as you can guess. Hard to make good pictures. If you buy a book the ticket price is deducted from the price of the book. They have book in various of languages but mainly in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.

The building is amazing and the books are flashy and attractive. But the quality of the books is incredibly low and the number of people insight is just spoiling the experience. I really hoped that the books would be of a good quality but I just feel cheated. All the books I got are somehow badly printed.

A beautiful place architecturally-wise - Livraria Lello deserves its title of most beautiful bookstore in Europe/the world (as far as I know). That said, the space is far too crowded - I was there in February; I can’t imagine what it must be like in the summer! The selection of books is very restricted - there are classics and some contemporary reads, but if you’re an avid reader, I doubt you’ll find what you’re looking for (perhaps this is different for the Portuguese section). Plus, the 2x 8€ I paid for tickets are not cumulative, which means that I’d have had to buy 2 books with a discount of 8€ each, instead of getting a 16€ discount on one book. The book prices are far too high, so I ended up not buying anything. Disappointed :(

Old fashioned bookstore with beautiful architecture. Another thing you must see if you are in Porto if you have the time. The entry fee is 5€, per adult, which you can buy on their website and then use it as a discount on any book they have. It's a long wait but still worth it! You'll have less people inside because of the virus which makes it better to take that awsome picture you want (only downside is you can't take your mask off at any time).

Nice old library. I think it got too famous and it's not worth waiting so long in line for what it offers. However, their editions of classic books are really beautiful. I wouldn't stay for hours waiting to get in, but that's just my opinion. The staff are really helpful and nice and that's something worth mentioning.

(Translated by Google) Visited by more than a million people annually (almost 3,000 daily visits) - this is because for years Lello's staircases were considered as the supposed inspiration of the bookstore where Harry Potter met Gilderoy in the book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (since JK Rowling lived in the city of Porto). However, in May 2020 J. K. Rowling denied this alleged inspiration, stating that he never entered the bookstore! Loved it here! They even have their own editions of different classic novels in different languages that you can buy. I think it does look smaller in person than it does in the pictures, but since they control how many people can go in at a time, it is much better. Also, if you are put off by the €5 to get in, they do take it off your total when you buy something! They also have displays of their old cash registers, artifacts from the original shop owner, etc.

a really gorgeous bookshop! you pay €5 for the entry but will get it back if you buy a book which I find totally fair. BUT! You have to wait around 1 hour to get inside. This is the only negative point though. Although we had to wait for so long, it was worth it. Inside, it was so pretty, even majestic I'd say. Beside Portuguese they had books in English, French, German and Spanish as well. wholeheartedly recommend this place as it lives up to its name as "the most beautiful bookshop" haha. Please don't solely go there for the sake of "aesthetic" pictures.

Very beautiful place inside, it's small place but it's a nice location to visit and take photos. You have to pay 5€ per person to enter, the books were pricey but is to expect since is a tourist attraction. We came on a Tuesday at around 14:00 and it was busy, hard to walk around, very limited space, my advice will be trying to book or come in a less crowded time so you can have a good experience and not feel overwhelmed.

Beautiful and worth the trip! Yes you have to pay to get in and book a time, but this probably makes the experience better as I believe it would be pure chaos if they did not have a system. I would have preferred it if they had smaller crowds at a time as it was a bit crowded but you could still take in the beauty of the place. If you decide to buy a book as a memento or because you want to read it you get the ticket price off the book price, which is nice. I recommend the special livraria collection as they are really beautiful.

This is an absolute must-see in Porto, especially if you're a book lover! The tickets can be bought in advance or at the entrance via QR code so you can secure your time slot. We got the option that is €8 p/person and gives you a discount on a purchase. I got a book that was originally €15 for just €8. It didn't take more than 15minutes to get inside, and it had a wide variety of books in many languages, cool merchandise, and beautiful decor.

Great place for book lovers! Really popular attraction in Porto and a must go! I wouldn't necessarily call this the most beautiful library in the world, the way they market this place! It's great but not totally worth the hype. Books are a bit overpriced too and they recent increased their entry prices to €8 per person which is a bit steep in my mind, especially given the waiting lines you still have to stand in.

Very cool bookstore - worth visiting if in Porto. It gets pretty crowded, so be prepared to be knocked around a bit (we even went in off season and it was still very busy). If you don't like lines, I suggest you purchase the expensive VIP tickets to skip the line. Buying the timeslot tickets for €8 does not skip the line. You just line up in your timeslot and it can take another 20-30 minutes to get in. Highly recommend a visit!

The place is unique and beautiful. I also love the book covers and their book choices. The place is kinda crowded and hard to move at times. But still it was quite a different experience and artsy library to visit. One of the firsts and beautiful libraries around Portugal and the world. Be sure to buy your ticket online, ahead of time. You can also use the ticket to purchase a book from them.

It is definitely a tourist trap, but the library was very pretty. Worth seeing once if you have a slow day. Not a huge selection of books. There was a line up and you have to buy tickets for 8 euros on their website for timed entrance.

I recommend booking in advance, although I managed to get a 14:00 slot for the next day. Be prepared for the queue, however once inside, be prepared for the magic. I love my book stores, but this one is from another world. Absolutely beautiful, cannot recommend enough.

If there is one touristy thing u have to do in Porto, this has to be it! Buy a euro 8 ticket voucher online and u will get a 8euro discount when u buy a book or u will have to pay almost double the cost to visit this unique bookstore. Lots to explore in the store. Take your time. Most importantly to book your ticket voucher online.

Agreed it's one of the best bookstores in the world but it is too crowded for my liking. You can only book online. Take the last shift, 6:30 pm booking. Eight euros for entry and you get a discount if you buy books from them. The books are mostly in Portuguese but that's not a con. It's understandable. Folks go in and only care about getting themselves clicked. Staff super polite and kind. Also willing to visit. A one time visit (only because of the crowd).

Nice place, well preserved, but it doesn't present much of its history, so it seems you just go there for the (Harry Potter) hype if you don't do your own research. Their "souvenirs" are kind of expensive, they have a collection of literature classics in many languages but really nice pieces in my opinion.

What an amazing classic masterpiece architecture engineering artnouveau bookshop design by Engineer Francisco Xavier Esteves in 1906. I suggest to buy tickets online to enter before everyone so you have the time to take some amazing photos.

One of the most amazing things I’ve ever experienced! I believe most people decided to go to Porto for the wine. Well, the first taught of “I have to go there!” came into my mind when I read an article of The Most Beautiful Libraries In The World and I saw a picture of Lello Library. So now, even the world is a total mess, I absolutely loved my summer & fall 2020 travels - including Porto. Lello Library it’s a show itself. You should know that you have to buy a 5€ ticket that we’ll be deducted from the price of any purchase made in the library of 15€+ value. You can purchase the tickets on their website. I would advise you to purchase the ticket online and to wake up early and be there at 09:30 to make sure you get in first. Even though the city is not so full of tourists and we got there around 09:50 we still had to stay in line fot half an hour. Whatever you plan on doing in Porto, make sure you don’t skip this place! You’ll absolutely love it!

Beautiful interior. Books there also have amazing cover design, especially for the Harry Potter series. (duh it's famous for being the Harry Potter bookstore). However, as some people have said, it is more for tourist than it is for readers. There is usually a long queue outside of the store and more trying to take picture inside. Overall, It is worth a visit if you are a huge Harry Potter fan, but if you're just a casual reader, there are other places more worth going. *I went there March 2020 and the situation might be different now with the ongoing pandemic.

An incredible experience during my January 2020 solo trip to Portugal! JK Rowling drew inspiration and wrote some of her books here! Highly recommend going early to get your ticket for entering and to bring no backpacks or you’ll have to get a free locker. I spent 2 hours there just enamoured by the library and it’s architecture - the staff spoke fluently in English as well 💫💫💫

It is really recommended to visit, however you have to take into consideration that you have to wait in line possible for a long time. It is not just any library, the inside is fascinating that picture do not make it justice. The entrance was 5€ however if you buy a book they discout the 5€ from it

(Translated by Google) Livraria Lello became too commercial. Part of its great affluence was built on the false premise that it would have some connection to the writer JK Rowling and her work, when she clarifies in an interview that she did not know Lello, while she was in Porto (just look for the interview on the web), which is sad, to say the least. It does not represent the spirit of the city. It has been almost impossible for many to enter the bookstore in recent years. When I passed the merchandising store, next to it, the tension of the employees was noted, their role is not safety, it makes the environment unfriendly and strange. When I first went to this bookstore it was at the beginning of college, looking for several books, when Lello had half a dozen people inside the store ... and even then I was attended by a gentleman with great dislike, unlike the others known street bookstores in the city. The building is beautiful, in fact what saves this establishment, it will be more than the bookstore itself, the architecture, than the inflated prices and the events organized around the work of Harry Potter, which has nothing to do with Lello . It is more a ticket sales and visits center than a bookstore, per se.

Over-rated place and a hyped ambience due to excessive crowd. We went at 9am, 28 July. The ticket felt like a scam. Since we are paying for the entrance, they should lessen the crowd going inside in order for people to enjoy this very small space. It felt like "we went to a concert" kind of crowd. It was hard to walk around, going up-down the stairs and scanning books (cos of the limited space). We couldn't even appreciate the beauty of the library. We've seen equally beautiful (if not better) with way less crowd which gives a more authentic feeling. If you're not a fan of classic books (eg. Little Prince, Romeo and Juliet) and maybe Harry Potter cos they have a lot of varieties, I don't recommend it. Overall experience was bad and we regretted visiting the place. We went out with a frown on our faces. (Not exaggerating) ☹

Magical place. Very crowded during high season, people come to take photos rather than buy books which is a bit sad to see. Queue was long (1:30), book your ticket a day in advance and make sure you arrive an hour before your slot if you want to save time. You can visit the library in 10 minutes.

Amazing viewpoints over the river and a must do whilst in Porto. Allows you access to both sides of the river’s restaurants, markets and attractions. Amazing photo opportunities from the cable way building looking over the old city… a great place to watch the sun set in summer and enjoy wine or a beer with live entertainment.

it's a beautiful library for sure! but it's way too busy, I think they just sell too many tickets at the specific time times. It's easy to buy online, cost 5€ and you get those discounted of any book you buy. You walk in at the time frame that you bought for, people makes line but I thought what for if it'll be same busy inside no matter what. Enjoy it but be aware of how busy it'll be

Beautiful, but really really crowded. We booked a time online, got there 10 minutes early and we had to stand in line for about 20 minutes before we could go in. I definitely do not recommend coming too early before the reserved time, as you'll be likely to get in later anyways. Once we got in it was so crowded. But it was very beautiful inside. There are books in Portugese, English, Spanish and French. And some editions of books they actually print themselves, which is nice. To get in you pay 5 euros, but you get 5 euros off of a book if you want to buy one, so technically the ticket would be for free, but books are very expensive.

Beautiful bookstore! We purchased our tickets online while we waited in line and were inside within 10 minutes. Tickets were €8, but that’ll get you €8 off any book. Definitely worth a stop while in Porto, but expect a crowd!

It is a gorgeous, staining bookstore, but you have to wait to get in, and you have to pay the ticket to get in. You'll be stuck there in the sea of people making photos and selfies... Books are very expensive, even the discount of the ticket price doesn't help much. But it is worth visiting, so precious memories.

Harry Potter theme bookstore. €8 entry which you need to download outside and pick your time. I thought this was pricey, however if you buy a book inside, then the €8 is discounted from the price. Amazing store with winding staircase.

A real architectural gem. It is worth getting to the bookshop as early as possible otherwise there are long queues. The staff are very helpful and friendly. There are so many different books to choose from covering all languages and subjects. It is worth going up to the second floor and the strange staircase, then looking down into the store.

Gorgeous! But! I understand the principle of having to pay to see the beautiful architecture inside, but for those who are patrons, because you are not simply visiting but purchasing books, I think the ticket should be fully refunded. At the end of the day, it's a book shop not a museum. I know I chose to pay to get in, but just saying.

Too busy for book people. It’s really hard to browse because of the constant traffic of people wanting to take pictures. Beautiful nonetheless and worth getting the Gold Entry pass if you’re a book lover. They make custom covers of books for certain books.
