Traditional atmosphere. Polite staff. More expensive than other restaurants in Funchal but worth it. The linguine with lobster and prawns were cooked well and the fried maize was amazing (very good option for vegetarians)

This became our favourite restaurant in Funchal on our recent trip. The food quality and portion sizes were by far the best. We had quite a few of their dishes over a week stay and had no complaints there. Our only criticism would be their service varies between servers and some requests were completely ignored or took so long. Despite this, we would still go back. Just don’t go if you’re in a hurry!

The food is good nad fresh so 5 stars for the taste, but 2 stars for the service and high prices (of course it is center). If you are not taking 4 dishes, a battle of wine and desserts you will be blank! We were only here to taste two dishes and staff was surprised that we don’t wanted more. We even got some side dish that we didn’t order and we had to pay for it. We had to wait several minutes to pay and they had got interested only when we left the table only to see if we left the money.

I had a oven baked cod. The waiter told me straight away that it's not a fresh fish but the frozen one, which is fine for me. It looked good but tasted not really great. It wasn't cooked enough, fillet had bones as well and in general it had no taste. The dish had way to much olive at the bottom of the plate. I give three stars because of the restaurant stuff, all of the waitress speak fluent English and are professional.

Seafood was amazing. Restaurant was full but we were served quick. Octopus Taberna Style - please try !!! And staff was kind to bring me half portion of Grilled Squid for desert, which were amazing as well. And my wife was happy with her grilled prawns.

I had a great vegan dish with lots of veggies topped with breadcrumbs. The portion was huge. What you see on the photo is only one third of the whole meal. I would definitely recommend this place!

We visited this restaurant on Mother’s Day and we had to wait a while to be served as the restaurant was full. The staff were friendly and eager to please and the four of us ordered different dishes. The food was nice enough, no wow factor and nothing I would offer my family to try - but certainly well cooked and filling. Price to quality ratio is a little high - the restaurants popularity speaks for itself.

omg how much salt was in these dishes. I think the cook fell in love. We removed the layer of spices from the seabass and somehow it was edible. espada with banana tasty, because it had a little less salt than seabass. The lapas however are not very good. The place are nice

Great restaurant in the Old Town area of Funchal, one we always return to and are never disappointed. Excellent choices on the menu, all the traditional steaks, black pork, prawns, plus fantastic fresh fish. We chose a huge Tiger Prawn cooked in garlic butter to start. Then three different fish, Seabream, Amberjack and Red Snapper, grilled with salad and chips. Great wine list too. Nice ambience inside and outside, entry of space and knowledgeable, multi-lingual staff.

Superb restaurant in the heart of old town Funchal. Seafood speciality, but steaks & chicken available too. Wonderful local fare, served up in a genuine Madeira atmosphere. Can't wait to come back.

They got recommended by the hotel we stayed at, and by Google. The location is in the heart of the old town, not far from the cable car. The food was absolutely delicious. But the service was lacking. We felt that the waiters were impatient and could not recommend any thing.

Out of all the restaurants we visited on our holiday, this was far and away the best one👍🏼 I can recommend both the fillet steak and cataplana. The prawn bisque soup is also very tasty, as is the sautéed shrimp starter. Friendly staff and nice setting inside 👍🏼

Mediocre…the food isn’t tasty, but can’t say it’s awful. We had Lapas as an entry and for the main course the scabbard fish and the cataplana de marisco. Meh. We also had dessert (crema catalana and the passion fruit something…also meh). There are other restaurants that are way better so don’t waist your time coming here.

Lovely restaurant, great staff and service, waiters were very attentive and helpful. Food was delicious! - fresh and generous portions. There were options for everyone - meat, fish or veggie lovers. Had the octopus taverna style and it was perfect, very tender and well cooked! Would recommend and would go back again! 👍

Very good restaurant serving traditional food from Madeira. It is always worth to ask for the fresh fish of the day. Excellent service, very tasty and beautiful atmosphere inside and out. Best restaurant in downtown Funchal.

Fabulous meal! Super fresh seafood, seasoned well and very tasty. The sweet potato mash was a surprise hit! We enjoyed a feast of scabbard carpaccio, grilled limpets, percebes, clams taberna style and scabbard with banana. The waiters were great. They were very patient with us and made us feel welcomed, even with our two overtired kids.

First impressions were not good as me and my aunt stood by the entrance waiting to be seated while the sole two waiters in the whole restaurant ran around trying to cater for a lot of packed tables in and outside of the place. We almost left, as the waiters were swinging by us with delicious looking food for about 10 minutes without noticing us. But in the end we got seated inside and boy, am I glad we waited. For starters my aunt ordered prawn salad which was delicious, packed with tasty fresh vegetables, cooked prawns and lovely dressing. I ordered octopus in curry sauce which was nice, but I had better. The texture was a tiny bit chewy which was probably the only thing I can fault it. It’s well worth a try. For mains we couldn’t decide what to get so we went for a bit of everything: mixed fish and seafood platter for 2 people. This is a must try if you like seafood. If you don’t, this will change your mind. The amberjack especially was mindblowing, but everything else was really delicious also - well cooked, well seasoned. Cannot fault it a single thing, proving yet again that Madeira is the place to go to enjoy delicious sea food.

Very nice place on Santa Maria street, beside the lovely atmosphere right next to the painted doors, the food is very good, recommend it to take the dinner. We tried the prawn bisque, fish soup, scabbard fish and the octopus- good choices for everyone who would like to test the local flavours a bit. Staff is also very friendly and dedicated.

Nicely situated in tourist spot, and food and service were great. Can't really go wrong with seafood here in Madiera!

Amazing restaurant in old town. I had the seafood in soup (can’t remember the Madeira name for it) it’s under the fish section. Highly recommend it. Delicious rib eye steak too. Cocktails are only 6.50 euro. Wonderful service too.

We were a bit skeptical since it’s on such a touristy street, but we had great meal here! It’s lovely to sit outside on the street here. The food was good, we had octopus and there were also a few good vegetarian options. The service was of high standard. Would recommend!

Tip: catch of the day. fresh fish prepared right after you make your choice. You can even choose your fish! Service is fantastic and friendly staff. Very child friendly especially when you travel with babies, they go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as they can.

Had the soup of the day (shrimp & crab), my husband had the octopus, and I had the tuna (requested it seared), sides, and flan for dessert. All were extremely well done and we left extremely satisfied. Great service as well.

Good service and friendly staff. My wife loved their scabbard fish, but I found out that this dish is not my favorite in general. It will was prepared well, though. The crème brûlée and passion fruit ice-cream were amazing! Big recommendation. I will try some meat next time, as we’re planning to come back. :)

Cozy place in the old town. Local grilled fish with passion fruit was delicious, staff was kind and professional. Do not reconnect to seat outside due to hot weather and very different people who walks on the the street :) P.S please try desert - cream brûlée is the best 🤩

A good one. The food was fresh and delicious. The staff was nice and attentive. Prices I guess are reasonable counting the location.

I loved this resturant .. if you going to spluge a little and love seafood put this on your must go list. You can smell the sea when you walk in the door. The service wine and food are incrediable. It was hard to choose from the extensive list but we managed it. I would go back again.

Great atmosphere, staff very attentive, really busy place so you might have to wait for a table or book in advance. Really delicious food, good quality and good portion sizes if you want Madeiran fine dining this is the place for you.

We ended up dining at Taberna Ruel twice during our holiday in Madeira. The food was well seasoned, simple and made with quality ingredients. We tried many of the fish dishes including limpets, grilled octopus, grilled squid and scabbard and they were all delicious. Very friendly staff. Would definitely recommend!
