You will have to queue to get a table here! We ate here last night arriving around 18:50 and queued for almost an hour, it was well worth the wait! We tried a couple of the traditional starters, shared a vegetarian dish and the local Porto sandwich in a spicy sauce, along with a dessert and a bottle of wine. Fantastic value for money, great service and really friendly staff, would highly recommend.
We shared a fantastic meal at Voltaria. Our starter was a heavenly black pigs cheek in a red wine sauce accompanied with boiled vegetables. Our main was a cod fish and shrimp rice dish which was incredibly flavourful. All the dishes felt like they were made by your beloved nonna. The entire bill with drinks came up to 33 euros which was a bargain considering the quality of the food and service. Highly recommend!
This has been by far the best meal of our trip in Portugal. We ordered the tuna and pineapple jam entree, the cod and the pork cheek. All of the dishes were really tasty and major highlights we will remember. There was a queue but it was well and truly worth waiting for, we highly recommend this restaurant, you won’t be disappointed.
Nice, cozy and homely place in the heart of the city centre. The service was lovely and the atmosphere adds to the value of the already excellent food. We loved our lunch here, queue wasn’t too long and it was absolutely worth it.
If you are ever missing comfort home cooked meals and happen to be in Porto, I would highly recommend paying a visit to the absolutely lovely home-cooks at Voltaria. We arrived at Voltaria on a slightly gloomy, rainy day in Porto and were psyched to try out their food, as we had heard such great things online. As the restaurant has limited seating, we waited outside for a few minutes, but were ushered in by a lovely lady the moment one of the tables cleared out. It was clear the women who run the restaurant put their heart and soul into everything they cook. We started our meal with the sausage filo pastry started and the stewed black pig cheek served with some bread. If our appetites weren't raging already these starters did the trick to make us want more of their cooking. The pork had been stewed in a wine sauce and fell apart at the touch of a fork. The filo pastry was crunchy and light and the sausage, spinach and garlic jam filling acted as a perfect blend of flavours to activate our taste buds. We followed it up with a francesinha (because when in Portugal) and a chicken rice. Both of these were extremely comforting and satiating. It was clear that good quality meat had been used in the francesinha. Moreover, the sauce was a lot more complex and well balanced, compared to my experiences in other cafe. Our winner of the day though was the chicken rice, which I think was also perfectly suited for a rainy day. The broth used to cook the rice was extremly flavourful and the right balance of chicken to chorizo had been added for the umami. By the end of our meal, me and my partner were left with a fuzzy, heart-warming feeling that only comes from a delicious home-cooked meal. Everyone at restaurant was attentive and engaged in really lively conversations with us, making us feel right at home. I would highly recommend Voltaria to anyone who ever plans to be in Porto. I can assure you the food is worth everty bit of the wait.
After traveling 10 days in Portugal, this dinner stands out as my favorite that I had. We lined up outside about 15 minutes before opening and got seated with the first round of tables. The codfish in cream sauce was heavy but delicious, reminding me of an extra thick clam chowder. The beef cheeks were also phenomenal. Excellent value too.
The food is great, one of the best we tried in Porto. The service is also exceptional, with the waitresses greet you with all smile and positivity. The only caveat is the time we waited for outside. We lined up almost 2hrs just to have this experience. If you have very limited time in Porto, then you can skip this one on their busiest times as this might affect your itinerary / schedule. But if you have time to spare, I’d recommend you to give it a try because it will give you a smile going out of the restaurant albeit the line.
Really small shop but extremely homey. Lined up for about 30 minutes before I got to sit down but well worth the wait. Try the Bochecha de porco preto (pork cheek), which comes either as a starter with bread or main with rice & Francesinha - prato típico mais famoso do Porto (the Porto Portuguese sandwich). I went alone and these 2 dishes filled me.
Omg I loved it here so much!! Food tastes like authentic warm home cooking. The seafood rice was divine and the cod was perfectly cooked. The service was amazing and the lady made us feel so welcome. A must visit. Not many tables as it’s a small cosy place so be prepared to wait if it’s busy. But it will be worth it.
A tiny, narrow restaurant that seats about ten people. It’s so full of warmth and happiness from the kitchen staff to all of the servers. The food is very obviously made with love. The caldo verde was perfectly seasoned and just what we needed on a cold rainy day. The Francesinha sandwich should be experienced at least once. It’s unique and definitely sticks to your ribs. Goes well with a glass of wine. Go early because it fills up quickly
I was on the lookout for a decent local restaurant when I stumbled upon this gem. We arrived early and ended up waiting in line before it opened, unaware of its popularity. Given its small size, with only five tables inside, we waited at least an hour for a seat. The food did not disappoint. We started with the black pig cheek served with bread, and it was surprisingly delicious—big chunks of pork, a bit spicy, juicy, and not at all dry! Next, we tried the “a brás,” which features fried potatoes, onion, and egg. It was fantastic, but you have to eat it quickly as the thinly sliced potatoes get soggy fast. Of course, we had to order the Francesinha, Porto’s traditional dish. It’s quite heavy, consisting of a sausage, ham, and steak sandwich smothered in melted cheese. While it was interesting to try, it was a bit too much for me to finish, and I don’t think I would order it again. We also enjoyed the octopus and codfish, both of which were pretty good—the octopus drizzled with olive oil and the codfish flaky. We paired our meal with a local wine, which was decent. Overall, the food was great and definitely worth a visit. It was surprisingly affordable given the generous portions we ordered!
Very long wait but good food. Line moves slowly. There were maybe 6 groups before us and we waited one hour starting from around 1:50pm. The restaurant is tiny and suited for small groups, while service and staff very friendly, they are on the slower side. The black pork cheeks were the standout. Also had the francesinha and the tawny port wine by the glass which were also quite good
Starters were really good absolutely tasty, especially the codfish ones. Port wine was fantastic. Codfish and shrimp rice were not too bad, prawns were very sweet and kind of salty. Service was excellent, expect a wait unless you go when they are first opened.
