NOT a five star hotel. But decent. So why is it not a 5 star hotel? The gym is simply too small and very much feels like an afterthought. Not more than two people can work out here. The breakfast is decent but not what you would expect from a five star hotel. I have never seen orange scrambled eggs until my stay here. At a five star hotel you would expect maybe an omelette station where you can make your own omelette. At this hotel that is not an option for breakfast but you can purchase a quite pricey omelette for lunch at the bar if you feel like breakfast was unsatisfactory. There are also no alternative milk options. At a five star hotel one could expect perhaps soy milk or some other option to cater to all guests. The restaurant is not really recommendable. Do yourself a favour and eat at many of the island’s excellent restaurants because here you will be charged extensively for fish drowning in olive oil, flavourless pasta and frozen pizza (if that was a fresh pizza, something went horribly wrong). Some of the reception staff is just rude. I have never had eyes rolled at me, never been told that I just have to wait until my room gets done (after 4pm mind you) nor had to bargain for getting a towel after ensuring the lady at reception that I was not going to steal it. Such attitude has no place in the service industry and even less so at a five star hotel. Okay so what was good? Spacious and modern rooms, nice design, great location and some very professional and attentive bar staff. The wine menu is also good. The life music at night is also a very nice touch. The infinity pool overlooking the ocean is also beautiful. Overall it is a decent place that gives you good value for what you pay in low/mid season and if you come in not expecting five star service or five star facilities, you will not be disappointed.

My wife and I stayed here for the first two nights; of our 7 night stay on island. This was by far the best place we stayed. Best cocktails; best breakfast, and great atmosphere. The rooms smelt very clean and overlooked the ocean. There are hiking trails along the coast right behind the hotel and a trail that brings you down to the shore. I would 100% go back here any time. We loved it!

Loved my stay. The room was nice and clean and the view was great. I had dinner at the lounge/bar, the table service restaurant (make reservations), and the continental breakfast and all were great. Not 100% sure what was going on with the horse on property outside staked in place all day and night without being brought in but besides that I would stay here again any time. It's on the north side of the island but don't let that fool you, it was 20 minutes from the airport and somewhat isolated so it was quiet and quick to get to. I stayed in a few hotels both here and Madeira on my trip and this was my favorite. The price point was good for what you get. If I come back, I would absolutely stay here again

This hotel purports to be a 5-star hotel and so we’ll measure it accordingly. It is not at all close to that standard - if it were a 3-star hotel, then I would think that to be about right (though with ups and downs). The location is pleasant and secluded (see photo of the pool and the sea), which we enjoyed. Parking is ample and the outdoor pool is adequate. Housekeeping service was also good. Sea view was nice but not worth the price of staying here, and was also accompanied by the view of the parking lot. The shortcomings are severe though: - Cleanliness: lacking in a lot of areas. The rooms were just about ok (gross bathtub though), but communal areas are filthy. We saw some enormous (dead) cockroaches inside and outside. - Breakfast: ostensibly a decent amount of choice, but everything is cheap and nearly all foods are ultra processed. We skipped most days. Bizarrely they have breakfast in a tired basement room rather than the quite pleasant main restaurant. - Hydration: they actually try to make money off drinking water. They provide 0.5l of drinking water per day per room and then they have the audacity to advertise €3 bottles of water at reception. These bottles are 49 cents at the supermarket (we know this because we lugged in 12 litres of water on the first day) - Maintenance standard: a lot was tired, broken, ripped, torn or cracked. No close looks needed. Loose tiles in slippery areas. Garden areas could be beautiful but it’s just wild ungroomed ground. - Indoor “spa”: gross pool and sauna (that I never saw on or used). Gym tiny, but adequate.

This hotel has a great location and view - ocean facing windows really gave us a sense of vacation; however, everything else is less than a five star hotel. 1. Poor maintenance of facilities - the property really shows it has been years since they renovate. Our bath tub was cracked at the edges, the hanging hooks were loose (go up side down), and the sink was clogged (we had to call hotel to fix it). We noticed the dirt under the coffee table, which were never got wipe/cleaned during the four days’ stay we had. 2. Lack of service: unlike any other five star hotels, you would expect someone greet you at the door and ask for luggage helps, we walked in and no help was provided until we checked in. Things got a bit better a few days later when we saw there were finally someone there. Another issue is with resource allocation - they got so many people help at the breakfast but no one else work on other parts of the hotel 3. Inconsistent service and food quality at the hotel restaurant: we went back twice for the restaurant to have our dinner. First night was excellent and the food was cooked well, and the second night was a disaster - we waited two solid hours to have our food. When the food was served, my risotto tasted like something you get from a fast food restaurant (they did not clean the shrimp poop line - yak), shrimps were so small (compared to everywhere else we went). During the waiting period, no one cared to ask if we need anything - we were completely forgotten. At the most, I will rate this hotel low four star - it has its location and view for that, but the service was disappointing.

Lovely location by the coast, very modern and cozy rooms. Great spa especially if you have children, no rules whatsoever so you'll be able to let them splash and scream at other guests. Unfortunately, my partner and I didn't have any. Maybe they shouldn't sell it as a relaxing experience... Jokes aside, the bar was great for drinks at night, we recommend having pineapple sangria.

Nice hotel, with modern infrastructure. Rooms are great, clean with a small balcony. But to be frank, definitely not a 5 stars hotel... biggest gap is around level of service as reported in several other reviews. Staff is sympa but most of the time not very efficient. Also important to know that hotel is located in the middle of nowhere, which is good as it's pretty quite. But the bad aspect is that you need a car to move around. Animation in the hotel is unexistant.

Other reviews cover that the location is great, beautiful views etc - all true. The hotel is decent for the price as it's not particularly expensive. What it absolutely is not, is a 5 star hotel as it claims. I would suggest it is more like a good 3 star. The breakfast is ample, but not of particularly great quality. The restaurant is nice, but the food is very average and more expensive than the fantastic (and cheap) local restaurants, and the service is easily overwhelmed. The indoor pool is very stuffy and the sauna is luke warm. Incredibly, they charge for the coffee pods available in the room. Overall happy with the stay, but just don't expect a luxury hotel.

I’m rating this 4.5 stars relative to the other options on the Azores which are lacking. People mention this being a 5-star hotel but as someone who travels for work, let me tell you those stars don’t mean much they’re more about amenities and technicalities, things the average guest rarely use. Price relative to other local hotels and reviews are a MUCH better gauge. My wife and I don’t really each much meat and if we do it’s chicken so food on the Azores was kind of tough but the hotel bar, which we ate at almost every night an awesome outdoor patio near the pool and ocean, had several great options and this one salad which was next level good. The location was excellent for exploring the island by car, the rooms were nice enough with a great AC, access to trail, beautiful views of the ocean and cliffs, and best of all it never really feels crowded the way it is set up even though it was quite full (we could tell from lights on at night and movement from outside) during our stay and that was prob our fav thing. My criticisms would be the gym was kind of bad even though we didn’t need it with the hiking etc and that’s standard for Azores, the bathroom has a huge glass wall and a curtain that doesn’t really cover it that well, and whoever thought that was a good idea is a moron, regardless of who you’re staying with, and the bed wasn’t that comfortable for a hotel of this price, but honestly it was still perfectly fine. The staff wasn’t that warm besides the cleaning staff and one front desk woman who was great, but that seems to be more of an Azores thing, since the local towns we hiked through near the hotel you would think a smile or nod was punishable by death - very different than similar places we have been previously in that regard. One other thing to mention - the internet went out around 11pm-midnight on THREE separate nights! I called the front desk and the attendant gave me a surly “mines out too, I don’t know…” and hung up. I wouldn’t judge a hotel by this because it could just be a local issue, but I mention this more as an FYI to any remote workers coming from a later time zone. That wasn’t my case, so I just went to bed, but I saw some people who were working remotely while there and if you were from the Americas or Asia/Australia this could really screw you up.

The location of the hotel is not in city center, it is not really in walking distance of anything. You must rent a car or take a taxi. A taxi to city center (area with shops and restaurants is €20+ each way. The hotel itself is newer, very clean and The Seaview Suite (their best room) is quite comfortable with breathtaking views. The staff is friendly enough, but not overly welcoming. Bottled water is very expensive, but you can drink the tap water. If you want room service, even if it's just a few bottles of water, the delivery fee is €15. I know...😳 The breakfast buffet is quite basic, but the coffee and local cheese is delicious. If you choose to have dinner at the hotel you must make a reservation. I wouldn't consider this a 5 star hotel, but for the price and service, a solid 4 stars.

Hotel was overall okay. Rooms were clean and nice. Location of the hotel is more like "somewhere in the nowhere" - you have to have a car or take a taxi so see something of the island, apart from the hotel. Wellness area including pool looks bigger in the pictures than it is in real life. The pools are very small actually, kinda useless in my opinion. I wouldn't necessarily come again, but it was okay.

Exactly what it looks like in picture! Clean and beautiful! So well-kept. Customer service is awesome and their breakfast is delicious. The location is great too because it’s not far from the airport and is almost in the middle of both sides of the island. Definitely choose this hotel if you are looking for a place to stay in the Azores.

Nice "5 star" hotel from an aesthetic point of view. Service was more of a 3 star hotel. Food quality was low (pork and cod were both dry and overcooked), need to hand in a card key to get a towel and need a skeleton key (no lie) to get into the gym. One of our guests was sick and got a nasty note from the cleaning crew saying that they needed a reason from him why he had his "Do not disturb" sign on his door for two days.

Pedras do Mar was an unbelievable experience for us, roughly 9pm our flight was canceled by Azores airlines at the airport to go back home to the U.S, we made a call last minute to Pedras do Mar and they were so helpful and accommodated us and we were even able to get a dinner in, staff was so friendly and helpful, from the front desk to the cooks, bartender etc. beautiful views. We wish we were able to stay more time but had a new flight the next morning. We will come back as a family to the Azores and stay here for sure one day! THANK YOU!!

The hotel is in a isolated part of the island, but not far from ponta Delgada. (16 min drive). This is definitely not a 5* quality hotel. Rooms are small. Do not get the breakfast, the food quality is on the cheap side. Noisy breakfast areas. The restaurant is also on the low quality, they served me a moldy dessert: crème brûlée ( when I showed this to the waitress, she told me it was just the decoration that was moldy so nothing to worry ). Noisy restaurant also, mixed with bar and activities area. Inside pool was small. Cheap outside pool lounge chairs. You see where I’m going here…cheap, cheap, cheap, this hotel cuts corners on everything: service, food, etc. My advice is to find a good 3* or 4* instead of being fooled by the rating like we were. Would I come back: definitely not!

The restaurant is completely overpriced and overrated. It was the worst meal we had on the island. Better service on the none reservation side. When we attempted to complain we were blown off because we'd already paid. The rooms are nice but the glass cube bathroom is weird.

It's an quite expensive hotel for what you get. We were there in mid season for 2 nights. In high season the rooms start at 310 euro I think. The bed sheets were not as good as expected. The door to the toilet is very noisy. The soap dispenser and the toilet paper holder was broken. The mirror lights were not working. The breakfast is noisy, and since it's quite a big hotel, the breakfast feels like a mess. I would be so disappointed paying full price for it. The pineapple was over riped. It's a beautiful view over the ocean. Even if it's only 20 min to Ponta Delgada, the hotel is quite remote. There are not many interesting restaurants close by. The food at the hotel is ok. Sauna didn't work. Turkish bath was very noisy. The deep part of the outdoor pool is probably around 80cm deep, We were recommended a guide for half day tour. The tour guide was not good at all. Felt more like a taxi driver who took us around the island without knowing anything about the island.

Abgelegene Hotel.

The hotel overall is nice, but we booked it to have an alternative if the weather is bad. The spa unfortunately is only one small finish sauna and one steam bath, both with glass doors to the pool area and only with bathing suits on. It’s not comparable to a spa in Austria or Germany. Also the fitness room is unfortunately smaller as on the pictures. Nevertheless the rooms are very nice and also the breakfast was sufficient for us - coffee could be better.

Beautiful hotel, beautiful location, and great service. The drive from the airport was about 20 minutes and pretty straightforward. We stayed several days at Pedras do Mar, and realized we made the right decision. We pulled up to the spacious parking lot overlooking the ocean. The whole floor is all glass, making the ambience wonderful, with everything well lit. Check in was quick and in less than 5 minutes we were in hour room, with views of the ocean, and a balcony so we could sit outside and appreciate the Atlantic. TV with tons of channels, and a bathroom that has a glass wall separating the shower from the bedroom, with an electronic retractable shade. Lots of lighting make it easy to have the room as bright or as dim as you want. Breakfast was amazing daily. It takes place on floor 0, and you can sit inside or outside while enjoying a vast selection of foods, eggs fried, scrambled or boiled, about 5 types of bread, cereal, local bacon, beans (yes, beans), 3 different types of milk. You will want to make sure not to miss this daily. All with great ocean views, once again. There is an epic walking path just down from the pool area, which has some fantastic views of the rugged coastline. Good place to fly a drone if you have one, if it isn't too windy, which it can get to be, so proceed with caution if flying over water. We ate at the restaurant bar quite a few times. It is open until 10:30pm daily (the bar part, that is, which has different food than the restaurant, which has a kitchen that closes early). When you choose to order it at the bar to take it upstairs, they give you the food in a big tray, which is when I experienced excellent service: as I was taking my tray upstairs, I managed to knock over a coke bottle, and it landed on my pizza, ruining it. Daniela, who helped me put the order in and even call the elevator heard this, and when I came back downstairs was already getting everything replaced free of charge. It took 45 seconds for everything to happen, yet she already put the wheels in motion to get the food replaced. 5-stars. She, along with Miguel and Carolina, were always great at the bar, providing excellent service. Some highlights, food wise are the pizza (with amazing cheese) and the cold ham sandwich. Drinks are great, and my wife recommends the gin and tonic made with Rocha Negra gin. They also have live music, which is more of a relaxing type, on some nights, and a pool table. Lovely place

+: mostly friendly staff, some facilities at the hotel like snocker and tennis court , towels available 24/7 (one time we were refused though because they had "too many guests at the hotel") -: the breakfast was not as diverse as must be in a five star hotel, sometimes with poor vegetables and the water in the coffee machine that tasted bad; dirty in the restrooms on the groundfloor; half broken facilities (old tennis rackets, tennis courts that look very cheap and abandoned); unclean pool. The natural pools are dangerous even for a 7 year old child, so it's more an announcement than a thing to do in the hotel. The staff looked very exhausted, e.g..servers in the restaurants and maidens that often asked us if it's ok if today she doesn't clean our room... The restaurant is expensive (17 euro for a portion of spaghetti with tomate sauce), looks like they are taking a chance of having to drive to get to another restaurant. By the way, one very young server was extremely polite and respectful and friendly always, even when we were in the restaurant for a portion of spaghetti four our son!

Beautiful sea view. However, the balconies facing it never get the sun. The hotel really has the worst customer service I have ever encountered. The majority of staff appear very sullen and uncaring, very inappropriate for the hospitality sector and really seem to be in the wrong job. Which sadly affects the overall atmosphere of the hotel. In addition to the extortionate price of food options (€16 for toast with cheese). Overall not great in a hotel with very little nearby. Sad to say would never return or recommend this hotel. Get staff trained on how to treat customers paying high prices for well deserved breaks. Half the price of bar foods, reducing portion sizes if required. Do not be shocked with questions re nearby services or taxi options. Read the customer feedback and act on it, all negative comments say the same.

We stayed here in June 2023 and really enjoyed our holiday. The staff was super friendly and the overall atmosphere is calm and peaceful. We had everything we needed: good breakfast, nice pools and the location was perfect to explore the island (you need a rental car of course). We would definitely recommend!

Excellent hotel. Beautiful views of the coastline 1 minute walk from the hotel. WARNING: The restaurant food was decent, but they will charge you 8 euros for a 50 cent bottle of water, which is very unreasonable and left us quite unhappy when we got the bill.

  • 3/5 Austin H. 1 year ago on Google
Positives: The hotel has a great location right on the water. Negatives: Pedras is not worth the price. Breakfast buffet was lackluster. Poolside service wasn’t great. The spa is not open on Sundays. Our phone rang at 4am for no reason (we didn’t request a wake up call or anything like that. The hotel feels kind of soulless. Our room trash can didn’t have a bag. My biggest complaint was the restaurant - We planned to eat dinner at the hotel Saturday night, but were told it was a buffet style dinner (no ordering) when we were to be seated (they should have told us hours before when we made the reservation). Luckily we went to the “association steak house” about 10 minutes away, and instead of paying 23€ for subpar hotel buffet dinner, ate some of the best steak we’ve ever had for 20€ This hotel may be good for large families, but not otherwise.

  • 4/5 Eric S. 8 months ago on Google
The positives: very quiet. The hotel doesn’t feel full even when it’s completely booked, possibly because people don’t just lounge in the hotel. The negatives: Definitely not a 5 star hotel; poor state of repair in the pool area (banister/railing was loose!), tiles popped up, some loungers broken. Very poor handling of an ant infestation in our room - we had to complain three times and insist on a replacement room when after they finally sprayed it (despite us giving ample notice). Poor breakfast with very basic items (but clean). Poor service from receptionists, eg no welcome, no offer of luggage support, no welcome drink. The restaurant was way overpriced (basically a tenner for chips), only alcohol was reasonable. The food itself was boring and uninspired. We ate there twice and then had enough. The problem is then the location - reasonable dinner alternatives are miles away. Best have dinner before returning back to the hotel. Definitely get a rental car. Sauna is ok, steam room as well; gym is tiny but modern equipment. Indoor pool is small but nice to warm up (no proper swimming possible). Outdoor pool is nice but also no proper swimming possible. Finally, I believe the staff are doing their best. They have the same issue as elsewhere with training and retaining people. If the hotel were to fix broken bits and hire a few more staff, then the hotel might get back I to 5 star territory. Right now it’s lower border 4 star.

Lovely place to stay when visiting. It's in a very quiet spot and you'll definitely need a rental car, but that should be a requirement no matter where you stay on the island. Pros: - Expansive breakfast - Quiet, secluded & peaceful - Great on site restaurant - Plenty of parking - Indoor and outdoor pool - Close to some fantastic restaurants you might miss if you didn't stay on this side of the island - Central location to visit different parts of the island - Rooms were comfortable and well equipped - Staff were friendly and attentive Cons: - a bit small and not a ton to do at the hotel itself (but that's not why you come to the island) Overall me and my wife loved our stay and would 110% come back here, we're already planning a return trip!

Lovely hotel! Rooms were clean, comfortable and modern. Meals at hotel were great. We’ll located for a quiet holiday but you can easily get to activities within 15-20 minute drive. Only recommendations for improvement: switching up the food at breakfast buffet and not charging for espresso pods in rooms. Hope to return soon!

Great service, very friendly staff and located in the centre of the island so easy access to various attractions. I was oceanside and had a great view. I also travelled solo and everyone was extremely friendly so it was very easy to socialise with others, particularly in the spa/pool area. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, great breakfast too. The restaurant in the evening is a bit pricey so would recommend going to nearby restaurants in the evening. Great hotel!

Excellent resort on North side of Island away from all high tourist areas. Beautiful views of the ocean the countryside . Lots of amenities. Pool towels available to take out for hot springs bathing. Rooms are specious with coffeemaker and hot water kettle sperTe which we loved. Staff was polite and attentive. They have amazing and wide ranging choices for breakfast for vegan and vegetarian as I am and also offered to cook more vegetables and Tofu . Very accommodating. Only suggestion I have is room should have a small safe specially international travelers carry their passport and documents and have to carry it along for safe keeping.

We had a fantastic stay at this location and we would deffinately be back for some more stays in near future. Staff are amazing and friendly. Overall there are certain part of the experience that does not feel like a five star hotel but I guess they got the stars on the wall. For Sao Miguel it is one of the best hotels to stay no doubt

  • 5/5 Nick L. 1 year ago on Google
Quiet, serene, peaceful and a terrific location away from the city bustle of bars and rowdy drunken tourists. A car is totally necessary to get the most out of Sao Miguel Island so the hotel being a bit out of the way should actually be what you're looking for. Beautiful rooms, daily service, great helpful staff, attention to detail excellent. They even arranged our car hire and a complimentary bottle of wine for my partners birthday. Buffet breakfasts excellent. Not much else to comment on here save to ignore the negative whiners.

We stayed here in April and found this to be the perfect base camp for exploring the island. The views from the ocean side rooms are beautiful. We were out at delicious local (but quiet) restaurants and had great meals in house also. The weather can be windy and moderate, which we enjoyed also but did not use the outdoor pool as a result. The breakfast buffet has everything you you could want.

Amazing hotel in a remote, northern part of the island. It has beautiful, breathing views of the ocean and countryside and mountains. Lots of choice at breakfast. Rooms are comfortable with coffee maker, kettle and mini bar. I suggest adding extra balconies in the side rooms where there is unused space. The staff are polite and attentive.

Don't get me wrong the hotel is not bad but by far not a 5* hotel. Some parts in the room are kinda broken, there are missing screws, the mirror has several brown "broken" parts there is no razor or toothbrush which I even get in every 1* hotel. Also the pool inside and outside are only about 1 meter deep so you can hardly swim at all, I'd call that fake pool to make fake pictures which annoys me a lot also the indoor pool is super hot and most of the time there are super loud children while the outdoor one is freezing ... if they would heaten the outdoof pool a little instead of the indoor pool it it be much better as more people would spread up to both pools instead of sticking to the indoor one. Also if you don't have a car the only way to get around is to walk on the main road which is super dangerous without any walkways and only lanterns in one direction. (Bus runs once an every hour and if you don't run to the door fast enough they will just let you stay there and drive of) ---edit--- there actually is a dirt way in both directions to fernaiz da luz and to calhetas all the way to ribera grande (takes longer though and wouldn't recommend after rain) No restaurant or supermarket anywhere near for people without a car so you are forced to buy overpriced food and water in the hotel. ---edit--- there is a very small shop in calhetas near to the bus stop but somehow it was closed most of the time we went there. All together its "okay" but it does look much better then it actually is in my opinion.

Lovely modern hotel to stay in. Comfy rooms with great view of either sea or mountains. Lovely indoor pool area with sauna and Turkish sauna. Outdoor pool also but only for summer use as was not heated . Breakfast was delicious with loads choice!! Really enjoyed our stay here .

This is NOT a 5-star hotel. The facility is very nice, clean, and close to the ocean. But as for my experience, the staff was not welcoming, and the only info I got while checking in was where is the elevator. We asked to book a massage in the spa, but the spa reception was unmanned, so the front desk sent us to send them an email (I was expecting they will reach out to us, but no). Breakfast was just ok, they kept the food in a heated container which result in you getting overcooked food and eggs. These guys have a lot to learn about customer experience.
