Thousand Lights Mosque is famous for its architectural splendour. It is said that 1000 oil lamps were lit up to illuminate the hall of the Mosque, which gave it the name ‘Thousand Lights Mosque’. The mosque, built in the year 1820, exhibits a medieval architectural style. The mosque has multi-domes and two towering minarets. The minarets are at a height of about 64 feet above the ground.

Thousand Lights Mosque in Chennai derived its name from the lighting of about Thousand oil lamps .The Masjid is a well-known worship place for the Muslims in the Chennai city of Tamil Nadu. The mosque is popular for a number of reasons, such as its name, its architecture and its historical and religious importance. Built in 1820. Very well maintained. The Alam present here is more than 210 years old and it seems during olden times, there used to be 1000 lanterns present in the lawn to light up the place and that is why the name. It is a sacred place for Shia sect of muslims in Chennai. There are also wooden replicas of mausoleums of grand children of prophet.

It’s a distinctive monument of the old madras. I’m glad to see cultures coexist in Chennai unlike other states and this mosque serves a witness. ?? Muslim brothers frequent this place and the locality is prone to traffic jam.

This mosque is situated at one of the prime areas in Anna salai. Very easy to reach and so much of transportation available for public. Metro is very close by and hence it makes it easy for many. There is also lots of eateries and cafes close to this location. It is also close to sathyam cinemas and many other malls like Spencer and express Avenue.

Thousand Lights is a multi-domed mosque in Anna Salai in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, is one of the largest mosques in the country and is a revered place of worship and azadari for Shia Muslims in the city.[2] The mosque was built in 1810 by Arcot Nawab Umdat ul-Umara.[1][3] It was constructed in medieval architecture.[1] The site of the mosque was previously occupied by an assembly hall. There was a tradition of lighting thousand oil lamps to illuminate the assembly hall. The mosque thus gets its name from this tradition.[4] The chief Shia Qazi of Chennai functions from the mosque, and the post has been continuously held by the same family.[3

This is best Mosque in Chennai..all facilities available. But little more improvement has to be done ..After finishing majlis people are throwing..plastic glasses and paper tea cups on the floors.. Dustbins have to be keept 🗑 in the areas. And while distribute majlis tabaruk..there is no proper arrangement to take the meal...I mean queue system should be followed. Volunteers should help the elderly to get the means.

Since the architecture has a special corner in the heart of Chennai, Thousand Lights Mosque stands tall in this list. The place has got its name because of a special feature i.e. a total of 1000 oil lamps light up the hall of the mosque. Imagine the beauty!!! Also, it is one of the biggest mosques in the country.

The aura of this place is unmatched. Blessed to visit it. It has the mosque, the gathering hall, the library, the shia marriage office, the cooking area, the deceased bathing area and the graveyard. The gathering hall has two floors. First floor has duplicated shrines for people's visit and prayers. It also has the 1000 year old light, which gave the place its name.
