This 1300 years old temple is situated in Thiruvanmiyur near the shores of the Bay of Bengal. Marundeeswarar Temple has found its place in the verses of the well known Nayanars namely Appar and Thirugnana Sambandar during the 7th and 8th century. Major expansion of the sacred complex was done during the Chola period in the 11th century. Other additions were made during the Vijayanagar Empire. Spanning over an area of 1 acre, the religious site is maintained by the Hindus Religious and Charitable Endowments department of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Legends state that well known sage Valmiki who wrote the Ramayana had been worshipping Lord Shiva in this temple as such the place is also called Thiruvalmikiyur which was later renamed as Thiruvanmiyur. Opposite to this sacred shrine, a temple was built in honour of Valmiki. It is believed that Sage Bharadwaja offered prayers to the Lingam in this sacred place. Markandeyar performed penance and worshipped Lord Shiva at this auspicious place. Lord Brahma had organised a festival in honour of Lord Shiva at this holy place. People believe that Kamadhenu, the sacred cow performed ablution on the Lingam with milk as such the Lingam is also known as Palvananathar. As it poured milk on the Lingam, it appears to be white in colour. In Tamil the word Palvannam means white as milk as such the name Palvananathar. It is said that the main shrine faces west and Sun and Moon offer their prayers to the Lord daily during the sunset. Vani tree is the holy tree of the temple where Lord Shiva made his appearance before Sage Valmiki and Sage Agastya. Last Kumbhabhishekam was held on 23rd May 2008. It is the 25th temple in Thondai region praised in the Thevaram hymns. As Lord Shiva taught Sage Agasthya about the Oushadha Mooligai or medicinal herbs and the cure for various diseases he is known as Marundeeswarar. In Tamil the word Marundhu means medicine and Eswarar means God Six rituals are held daily and twelve festivals are celebrated annually. Sessions on Shiva Siddhanta are held daily from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the Devasriyan mandapam. Brahmotsavam celebrated in the month of March to April attracts a huge crowd. Shivaratri, Ganesh Chaturthi and Skanda Sashti are also well celebrated in the temple. Pilgrims flock into the temple during pradosham. There is no fee to visit the temple. It is open from 5:30 AM in the morning till 12:00 noon and 4:00 PM in the evening till 9:00 PM at night. How to reach Marundeeswarar Temple Chennai Chennai can be accessed through all modes of transport, bus, air or railway. Chennai airport is one of the busiest airports in the country. It is well connected to various parts of the world through daily flights that takes away from the Anna terminal. There are daily flights from different parts of the country to Chennai that fly from Kamaraj terminal. The capital city is well connected to other parts of the country through a well established railway network. Trains linking Chennai to other cities of India can be boarded from Chennai Central railway station and trains connecting it to other cities of Tamil Nadu can be boarded from Chennai Egmore station. Buses can be taken from CMBT (Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminal). For transport within the city electric trains, metro trains and local buses are a preferred mode of commuting. People can take a bus, taxi, auto rickshaw or cab to reach the temple from the airport, bus stand or railway station. Marundeeswarar temple is located in Lalitha Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur. The doctor and savior from all illness. I was referred to this temple by Astrologist when my Dad fell ill and also I have heard from few others who prayed to this diety and came out of illness. The name by itself says Marundu eswarar and Goddess Thirupura sundari is a bliss to have Darshan. While I visited it was Panguni uthram and temple filled with people and kids involved in seva is all a divine experience.

Nice dharshan and must visit place in Chennai. Very calm and spacious place and don't miss every day 8.30 pm abihishekam to Lord Shiva. More than 100 devotees sang song which goosebumps moment for us and sure you will enjoy the spiritual moment. Heard they use only cow milk for abhishekam and not normal powder packet milk. Om Nama Shivaya 🙏🙏🙏

Spirituality speaks here. You would enter and bhakti bhavna would arise from the ethos of your skin. You can feel the presence of the divine. I loved how South Indian culture celebrates their culture. The idols are not designed much. They are simple. Just like Gods and Goddesses should be. But they have made the temples with care and love.

The Marundeshwara Temple in Chennai holds a special place in my heart, and it is undeniably my favorite temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this divine abode emanates an aura of peace and tranquility that is truly enchanting. From the moment I stepped foot into the temple, I felt an overwhelming sense of serenity. The captivating presence of Lord Shiva, in all his glory, left me mesmerized and filled my heart with joy. The idol exudes a divine energy that is truly blissful to behold. The temple's architecture is a marvel in itself, showcasing intricate carvings and beautiful sculptures that depict tales from Hindu mythology. Every corner of the temple resonates with spirituality, creating a spiritually uplifting experience. One of the most remarkable aspects of the Marundeshwara Temple is its association with healing. It is believed that worshipping here can bring solace to those seeking relief from physical and mental ailments. The temple's medicinal properties add a unique and powerful dimension to the entire experience. The temple's ambiance is complemented by the soul-stirring chants and hymns that echo through its halls, creating an atmosphere of devotion and reverence. In conclusion, the Marundeshwara Temple is not only a place of worship but a sanctuary of peace and divine grace. For me, it is a haven where I can connect with spirituality and find solace in the presence of Lord Shiva. I wholeheartedly recommend this temple to anyone seeking a profoundly spiritual and uplifting experience. It is truly a gem among Chennai's many temples, and its beauty and sanctity will leave you with cherished memories to last a lifetime

A brief history about Marundeeswarar Temple: Marundeeswarar Temple in Thiruvanmiyur may well be the oldest temple in Chennai. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. It was probably built sometime around 50 BC in honor of the deity Shiva who appeared before the sage Agastya to impart the knowledge about medicinal herbs - thus earning the name - Marundeeswarar - the Lord who is proficient in medicine. Inscriptions found in Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore, shows that this Marundeeswarar temple was an important Shiva temple from the ancient times. It is said that the sage Valmiki who wrote the epic Ramayana came to Thiruvamiyur to invoke the blessings of Lord Shiva. Hence this place was called as ThiruValmikiyur which later became Thiruvanmiyur. Now this temple is still a landmark in Thiruvamiyur, South Chennai. The temple architecture closely follows the traditional South Indian, especially the Cholan temple architecture. This temple attracts thousands of Hindu pilgrims every year.

One of the oldest temples in Chennai. Originally called the Thygarajar temple of Thiruvanmayur, now called the Marundheeshwarar temple. It is believed that if you pray to the main deity here all your ailments will be cured. Om Namah Shivaya!! Thripurasundari will bless us with abundance!! Every full moon the procession around the temple is very popular!!

Marundeswarar temple is One of the peaceful and beautiful temples of Chennai. The name translates itself to a place where people worship lord shiva for better health. The temple has two entrances one from the main road and one from the pond side. The main entrance is a big gopuram followed by two big mandapams whose ceilings are so high and are painted beautifully with tales related to this temple. It's walkable distance from thiruvanmayur bus stop just 250m far. It's one of those temples you instantly feel so peaceful and contented💜❤️ You should be lucky enough to get free prashadham😂 or you can buy some yummy pulihora, vada or chekkarapongali yourself.

An ancient Shiva temple. The lord's (Shiva) name in this temple is Marundeeshwarar and goddess(parvathi) name is Thiripurasundari. This is one of the thevara paadal petra sthalam (தேவாரப் பாடல் பெற்ற ஸ்தலம்). Nearest railway station name is Thiruvanmiyur. Can reach this temple through bus also. Lord Mahavishnu shrine is here instead of lingothbhavar at backside of Lord shiva's shrine. There are separate shrines for Thiyagarajar, Bairavar, Gajalakshmi, Ganesha, Murugan. Milk Abishekam is performed daily to the Lord. Here Lord is facing towards West direction and goddess is facing towards South direction. The another name of the Lord here is Paalvannanathar (பால்வண்ணநாதர்). Lord teached medicines to Sage Agasthiyar here. Marundu(மருந்து) in tamil means Medicine. Hence lord's name is Marundeeshwarar. This temple has two entrance. Walkable distance from thiruvanmiyur bus depot.

Nestled in the Chennai neighborhood Thiruvanmiyur, between East Coast Road and the seashore about 700 meters to the east is this pristine place of worship fairly unchanged (leaving the very identifiable add ons) for over a dozen centuries. It is not possible to miss out the serenity of the place, nor fail to note the ease with which the past & present melt into each other everyday. Nothing ersatz about the simplicity & spirituality of anything around here. Probably it is all an ordained design to connect ordinariness to bliss. A visit to this place is a must, if you are seeking to connect with the ultimate Sat Chit Ananda.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and it is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are believed to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. The temple has a rich history that dates back to the 12th century, and it is considered to be one of the holiest places in India. The architecture of the temple is a beautiful blend of Dravidian and Rajput styles, and the intricate carvings and sculptures on the temple walls and pillars are a testament to the incredible craftsmanship of the artisans who built it. One of the most unique aspects of the temple is the presence of twenty-two holy wells or "theerthams," which are believed to have healing properties. The temple also has a massive corridor that is one of the longest in India, stretching for over 1.2 km. Visitors to the temple can experience the incredible spiritual energy and devotion that fills the air. The atmosphere is serene and peaceful, and the temple's priests perform daily rituals and pujas, adding to the spiritual ambiance.

A sanctuary of divinity in one of the most crowded place Thiruvanmiyur This is a historic temple and boasts of many miracles. As the name suggests"Marundhu" means Medicine, so this is a temple dedicated to Ishwara as the healer much similar to Baidyanath and Vaidheeshwaran The shivalingam is believed to be installed by the divine Agasthya Rishi. The abhishekam to lord Shiva in the morning is a spectacle which leaves everlasting memory and peace in our hearts. Goddess Meenakshi, lord Ganesha and lord subrahmanya with vallu deivayani are the other predominant deities The stone pillars complex host the idol of Thyagaraja swamy . This temple also have a small.worship place for Maha periva ( shankaracharya) and a cow shelter Right from the temple kalyani outside to all the pillars, idols of shaiveites nayanars and the divine deities, this temple is extraordinary and promises good health and happiness to the true believers.
