Holy and Historical monument in Chennai. One of the best architecture and alter. Peaceful and divine. A must go place for people of all beliefs. The location Luz is named after this famous monument. The gold work design in the alter is excellent. The church is well maintained. Historians, people who wish to meditate in the positive vibrations would love this place. Easy to reach. Ample parking space available. There is also multipurpose hall attached inside the campus for conducting wedding and other events.

Nice and Peaceful place. Best time to go there is in the morning. Sitting in an old quaint church with the chirping of beautiful birds is a different feel... The place was once a very dense mangrove forest when the Portuguese visited..

I happen to visit the place as I attended Christmas Service in 2023 by Kuki Worship Service, Chennai. The church is rich in its architecture and design. It look impressive. The church has Hall and dinner hall too. So I mean the church is well equipped with infrastructure and amenities. The place is also clean which adds my likeness to it.

This is really a very old church. We can see all the proof for that inside of this Church itself. This Church is really divine and have a peaceful surrounding despite being in the middle of busy Chennai. This Church also has parking facilities for bike, car and even vans. There is also a community hall inside the church campus. Must visit place for all the tourists of Chennai and also for the Catholics it's a very holy place that creates miracles. So please do visit and get the blessings from Our Lady of Light!

Very Beautiful Church in Chennai city. It feels so peaceful and pleasent to worship. I personally can feel the presence of Our Lady of Light. Very powerful church. Built by the Portuguese missionaries in the year 1516 AD. Recently the church was renovated in 2019 under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Petter Thumma, the Parish Priest. The church celebrated it's 500 years in 2016.

One of the oldest and finest church in chennai. 506yrs old. The word 'luz' is Portuguese word which means light or brightness. As per me it is a best place to visit especially non prayer times which is filled with full of silence.

Visited the church during a typical Saturday afternoon, it was peaceful, there was serenity, one could feel the calmness and comfort in the air and atmosphere inside. A rich and historic place of worship which has been standing tall for over 500 years in the heart of chennai is a must visit place for anyone seeking for some peace. The place has ample parking spaces for both 2 wheelers and 4 wheelers and is easy to navigate and locate from the maps as well.

very beautiful and relatively small church within. its built in 16th century. It is less talked about (less famous) that i lived in mylapore (muthu street) for 3 years which is in between this church and santhome , but i had visited this church only 4 times ( came to know about it only after 2 years or so). Where else i would visit santhome church almost every day

Church of Our Lady of Light (பிரகாச மாதா ஆலயம்) is a Roman Catholic shrine in Chennai. It is commonly called Luz Church which derives from the Portuguese name Nossa Senhora da Luz. Luz means light in Portuguese. Built in 1516, it is one of the oldest Churches in the city and its foundation stone marks as one of the oldest European monuments in India. This part of Mylapore is believed to have been a thick forest. Thus the church gets its local name as "Kaatu Kovil" (காட்டுக் கோவில்) and to this day, its address carries the name of Kaatukoil Garden. The church was damaged by the forces of Golconda between 1662 and 1673 and during Haider Ali's invasion of the city forts between 1780 and 1782. The British East India Company Forces occupied the Luz Parish Residence for some years. The church is located inside the compound of the famous St Isabel's Hospital in Luz, Mylapore and the road leading to the church is called Luz Church Road.
