One of the famous place to visit in Madurai. It is a memorial museum for Father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi. It is one of the five Gandhi Sanghralayas in the country. Most attractive for me is that it includes a part of the blood-stained garment worn by Gandhi ji when he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. Very peaceful place to spend some & it is showcases Gandhi Ji’s life through photographs, letters and other artifacts.

Had a great time exploring the Gandhi's life story and it also have a Government's Tamil Museum (Costly for Foreigners but worth spending) inside. Pros: 1.Many things about Gandhi is available, needs a whole day to explore. 2.Mobiles and Cameras are allowed but costs Rs.50. 3.Silent surrounding and good ventilation available. 4.Has things weared by Gandhi especially the blood stained cloth of Gandhi which he was wearing at his death. 5.It has a stationary store containing Gandhi's books and other good stuffs. 6.Good maintenance. Cons: 1.Tickets and stuffs are costly. 2.Felt quite boring and sleepy.

Very well managed museum and a must visit place in Madurai. This is probably the best museum we have visited both in India and abroad. There are many photographs and the explanations that are well laid out. Also, contains many original artifact's of Mahatma Gandhi. Don't forget to visit the small bookstore and the government museum in the same premises. Entry to Gandhi museum is free but there is a small charge for the Government museum.

An excellent display of history of colonisation of India by British, resistance to them & various attempts made for the independence of the country. The presentation is a 'must watch' for students and grownups alike. It was nice to know that the museum conducts examination for students after the visit, as per their schedule. A welcome activity. The photos, some original exhibits are all displayed with brief but important information. The names of some south Indian freedom fighters have been mentioned with due respect & importance. Such an emphasis is often missing in many museums. This place is under the administration of a private authority. I wish they can continue with good work for a long time to come. The government museum few feet away has also many artifacts on display. The model of nuclear reactor is impressive. The recorded information is displayed in a light and sound show. Excellent. Some artifacts need better display of information. The font type and size, number of words etc should be reviewed by the curator to make this place far more attractive and informative. I walked in with little expectations but when I walked out I was really impressed. When in Madurai, one should dedicate 2- 3Hours for this place. The book store in premises is good. An amphitheater in a corner looks neglected but can be put to good use.

This museum is well maintained. You can easily enter the museum. It's open all the days just remember the timings 9am-5:30pm. On the walls you can see how the Englishman came to India conquered it and how we got freedom again, the full story is depicted. And there is one hall for Gandhiji. All his belongings like the dhoti he wore in his last day, his writings etc are preserved. Nice place to visit.

Good about Museum : 1. Intention to have a museum like this which demonstrates freedom fight. 2. Portrayal of history from 1800 to 1947 in English & Tamil with pictures. 3. Books to buy on Gandhian thoughts. Improvement opportunities: 1. Museum was built years back. Still maintaining the same infra & interiors which looks average. 2. Video visuals, 3 D shows can be played to enhance the historical knowledge for the visitors especially kids. 3. 30 - 45 minutes is the maximum time we can spend there now. Need some thinking from authorities to make the visit more interesting and knowledgeable for the visitors.

The Gandhi Memorial Museum is showing a very important and memorable part of the indian culture. Mahathma Gandhi leading one of the few peaceful revoloutions in human history to sucess and ending up in the today worlds biggest democracy is a history more than worth of preserving and showing us even good examples of how to behave till today. The museum does a good job at tflling this part of the story. For some parts i miss the modern and educated and neutral perspective in this museum, since there are some parts of history here wich are also worth of being disussed. More specificly the life and rights of a general indian citizen before the arrival of the british empire in india and the political benefits wich Ghandijis family gained from his reputation.

A very humble museum befitting of the man that it honors. I had the pleasure to learn the deep history of India's colonization and how it continually worked for its freedom. Also, how Ghandiji took the forefront of that movement through nonviolent measures. It was very inspiring! While it will take an hour or two to go through the exhibit, it is not air conditioned so come prepared! Only 10 rupees to visit, such a deal! 50 more rupees if you want to take photos inside. Enjoy!

This is the museum for father of our nation the late mahatma Shri. Mohandas karamchand Gandhi. This is situated in the MADURAI city near by the district collectorate. This is also one of the most important visiting spots in this tourism city and people those are visiting the meenakshi amman temple and Thirumalai nayakkar Palace also visiting this museum. Not only this museum for the tourist but also to the local people and especially for all the students studying in the various institutions here and there. The main entrance gateway building is at now under reconstruction for more facilities to the common public and those are coming to here. In this building that's Ganthiji's so many portraits photos on those days ,his used things, original letters with his signatures are kept here for our notice purpose. We could understood that after seeing this place thats our father of nation and about his genuine face and his small livelihoods. This museum has also an annexed building and there you can see the exhibition of British people used weapons, and other things on those days. More over the oldest musical instruments like veena, morsang and the metal vessels are in vengalam are kept here. The bigger sand pots (muthumakkal thazhi)that's where the dead bodies are kept buried also kept for our seeing purpose here. The small birds and animals in which are dead are artificially made-up and kept inside the glass doors. We can see the weapons are used by the Kings of monarchy at that time. But before going to enter into this exhibition that's we have to buy a ticket for Rs. 5 per person. Students are getting concessions and for Rs.3 only for them.but foreigners has to pay for Rs.100 per person. And differently abled persons are exempted and the entry is free for them without any entry fee. This museum has also a big library in a separate building including the daily 📚 reading section containing the daily, weekly, monthly, bimonthly news papers and journals. Gandhians books all are kept for the public purpose. This museum has all the basic amenities including separate toilets for men and womens. Drinking water facilities are also found be in good condition. Bus transportation for the local area is available inside itself. The disability people could easily approached this place with their wheelchairs etc. This museum has lot of working persons including the security guards.,under the supervision of the museum correspondence, Secretary, Treasurer etc. This museum found be in facious and good hygienic with neat conditions. Recently I did visited this place and I like it very much its usefulness for the common public to know about ours father of the nation and his earlier freedom activities and also the Gandhians propagandists. People once should be visited to this museum and I strongly recommend this place 👌

It's a great place to visit and know more about the patriotism that happened during the struggle for Independence. More photos and the history about Gandhi's life and his way during the independence. One more place outside having a museum with weapons, places of madurai, weapons and few archeological findings as well along with few animal skeletons. One book store is also available where you can find tamil history books. It's a good place to visit and it's a history places in Madurai.

The Gandhi Museum in Madurai is a place of historical significance and cultural importance that pays tribute to one of the most iconic figures in India's history, Mahatma Gandhi. Spread over a sprawling complex, the museum offers visitors a deep insight into the life, philosophy, and contributions of the Father of the Nation. The museum is strategically located in the heart of Madurai, making it easily accessible to both tourists and locals. As you approach the museum, you are greeted by a bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi, a symbol of his enduring influence and principles. This sets the tone for the enriching experience that awaits within.

The museum has an original letter written personally by Gandhiji to Narayanan Sathsangi of Devakottai. A congratulatory message sent by Gandhiji to freedom fighter and poet Subramania Bharati is also preserved in this museum. Another interesting letter is the one written by the Mahatma gandhi to Adolf Hitler addressing him as "Dear Friend". Located in a quiet place, this memorial of Gandhi contains a "Visual Biography of Bapuji" containing photos, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, quotations and selected copies of his letters and renderings. This section contains 124 rare photographs depicting various phases of Gandhi from his childhood days until being taken to the crematorium . The pictures displayed here are carefully selected making viewers remember the importance of a national leader, who lived his life as an example to all.

I went on Gandhi museum on Saturday and from 1 to 2:00 p.m. there will be a break and you cannot in enter inside the museum at that time but other than that you can enter the museum and visit. But I feel like there is nothing really unique there in museum except Gandhiji's watch and the somethings like that but other than that most of them are just stories on how India got the independence so but if you are new to Madurai and if you are rock exploring different places then definitely it is worth it and there is also Government museum that is outside the Gandhi museum it is 5 rupees for adult it is also good try if you are time you have time definitely go try it is a really good.

Gandhi Memorial Museum, Madurai…it was a very hot day during my visit (1st June) but when I entered into the two storied white building, I felt peach in my heart. It is one of the five Ghandhi Smarak Shangrahalaya in India. On your way to the museum, you will first notice a nameplate that states that it was inaugurated by the Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 15th April,1959. It is a well decorated museum with lot of collections. I was thrilled when I saw the clothes which He wore last day of His life. Infront of the museum there is a book shop where you can collect book as a souvenir by Ghandhian Literature Society of Madurai.

Years after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, in 1948 an appeal was made to the citizens of India nationwide to build memorials for him. With the help of contributions from poor and rich citizens of India, a trust was established for this cause, the Mahatma Gandhi National Memorial Trust. This museum was inaugurated by the former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 15 April 1959. Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai comes under the Peace Museums Worldwide selected by United Nations Organisation (UNO). The palace of Rani Mangammal was renovated and converted into the museum.

Nice Museum. A must visit for a person interested in Indian History and our freedom struggle. Only the museum is maintained, Wash room / Toilet facilities ZERO, no SWACHHATA at Gandhi Museum. I think all the money is going on in corruption.
