Iconic place to eat. "Karpagambal mess since 1953", 70 years... unbelievable. Old traditional building, this place looks like a temple, and the food served is as tasty as prasadam. Tried their hot, bulky, medu vada. Crispy outside and totally soft inside. Next was 'Soji appam', a unique sweet. It is similar to the Poli/ BOLI but with kesari stuffing. The podi dosa was ultimate. And all this ended well with a traditional style Mundhiri cake (cashew sweet). This restaurant is located relatively on a broader road compared to other narrow streets of Mylapore. Car parking is available on the side of the entire street.

I went to this place after some 7-8 years. I sat in their non ac section, which was the same old place. Ordered one single medhu vada and filter coffee.. Medhu vada was not at all crispy and was having sponge feel in mouth, but was microwave hot. But sambar and chutney were good. Filter coffee was good. Finally came the bill, which was around 96 rupees. Single medhu vada was charged 55, and I literally asked the person in cash counter whether it’s charged for one vada or two pieces as a set. He replied, it’s for one vada with a strange look. And the person who served, was hanging around for tips after this. Better skip this place, and go for Vasantha Bhavan or saravana Bhavan nearby. At least we get a fine dine experience for the money spent.

They have a large menu, freshly made food. Their food is really yummy and tasty. They serve food on banana leaf so its environment friendly. Variety of food is awesome. It's a small place to eat in but the service is really good. The place is clean. Food is extra economical for that quality. They have delivery through Swiggy and Zomato. They also have a lot of pickles and podis for sale. Thoroughly enjoyed the food and experience. It's a great place to taste traditional food. The place is usually very crowded. But it's worth the wait.

OMG. It's super costly. I have shared pics of whatever i ate for two persons and we got the bill of rs.530. for four idly, two dosa, two vada and two coffee. I am shocked . The taste of the food is awesome. But how? How can they charge this much amount?

The price is too high. Pongal in a small cup itself around RS 110. Taste is okay. Pongal, poori, podi dosa, vada, 2 sweets totally came around rs 1100. Too little for the money.

Visited this much hyped and old franchise and overall i would rate 2.5 stars. The very mark of a Veg trademark restaurant is it's Sambar, the Sambar was a total let down in this place! The ghee roast was crispy, poori was ok. The sambar and chutney was sp bland without any taste elements. The sambar was yellow in color and was in a mid ground between sambar amd dhal. Fiktet coffee was okish. Ambience was very average. 2 things I liked were 1) the strong coffee smell that struck my nostril from their fresh coffee grinding process, 2) the servers using tongs to serve all food. Will never visit this place again, might prefer ratna cafe or murugan idli shop over this place.

The Mylai Karpagambal Mess is a great place to visit for those looking for delicious vegetarian food in the vicinity of the Mylapoor Kapaleeswara temple. The location of the hotel is convenient as it is located close to the temple, making it an easy walk for devotees after a morning visit. The restaurant serves tasty vegetarian food, and the sweet dishes are especially popular among visitors. However, it is advisable to reach early as there are chances that the food gets finished by the time you reach. During my visit, I arrived at 9:30 am and found that the masala for Poori and Masala dosa had already run out. However, I was still able to enjoy the Podi dosa and Onion dosa, which were both very delicious. Apart from the food, the staff behavior is noteworthy, and they are always friendly and welcoming. The servers are attentive and make sure that your dining experience is pleasant and enjoyable. One drawback of the restaurant is the limited parking space. There is no dedicated parking available, and you will need to park on the road side. However, this is a common issue in the area and shouldn't detract from the overall experience of the restaurant. Overall, Mylai Karpagambal Mess is a great place to visit if you're looking for delicious vegetarian food in the vicinity of the Mylapoor Kapaleeswara temple. With its convenient location, tasty food, and friendly staff, it's definitely worth checking out.

Nice place to try traditional South Indian dishes and coffee. We generally go to this place whenever we visit Mylapore Kapaleeswarar temple. Its on the chariot street. They do sell podi, pickle and papad items as well. Definitely a good place for vegetarians.

It's a good place to have light food after darshan. It's just in front of temple and it's old but the taste is good. Felt a bit pricey as a student but food was worth the money. Many more shops are there and it's a good place to visit. Must visit

A decent small restaurant is serving good south Indian food. The ventilation is not so great. There is an AC hall with four tables ( 6 seats per table ) . They sell lot of home made pickles and ready to mix powders. There could be 10 non A/C tables ( 4 seats per table ) . Food should be considered as costlier for the ambient and taste.

Walked in to have a light refreshment. Prefered this place for one reason - not many throng here because of the decreased service+taste and increased price. Had an Adai + aviyal. Tasted an item called aviyal which was just like thick morkozhambu with scarce availability of vegetables in it. I could count the number of pieces! An over-sized vazhaipoo vadai was delicious. Co was good. My Ratings - Taste 3.8, Service 4.5, Ambience 3.5, Pricing 3, Parking facility 2.5 Overall 3.8 only

Easily identifiable place just near Car( தேர் முட்டி). Just opposite to RASI Sillks. No car parking. Govt paid parking only. At present ₹40 for 2 hours. Tiffin is always available here. Excellent food. But very costly. One poli is costing ₹120/- Adai aviyal and poli - don't miss. Mini lunch ie. Mixed rice and all Disa, etc items are available. Air-conditioned room is inside. Good service. Wash area is OK. Could be better. Small kids cannot wash their hands. Toilet is not at all good. Bad. Unless otherwise emergency, Pl don't try to use.

Very close to the Kabaleeshwar temple and One of the finest authentic eateries in town. Podi dosa or any dosa with sambar is a must try. Idiyappam and Kurma was really good so as the badam halwa. Don’t ever miss the coffee. Price wise it’s expensive, it was really hot and fan wasn’t sufficient to cool us down. If you opt for AC option you have to pay 20rs extra on all items, menu is available in their website. Try it once or couple more times for an excellent taste but do not experiment.

Over hyped place. I agree it was good once upon a time. But the recent visit was a disaster. Went along with my wife for breakfast. No attentive service. Took their own time to attend the table. Ordered ghee uthapam and poori set. Both were pathetic. There was literally no ghee in the So called ghee uthapam. When questioned, awkward silence was the only answer from the staff. Poori was equally worst. Too much oil and not properly boiled/smashed potatoes. Looks like they are taking their customers for granted.

Have been visiting this Mess for over 40 years now. It is a must visit place whenever I come to Chennai. Quality of food is almost the same as it always used to be. Service is also good though the personalized service of those days is somewhat missing. Still worth a visit.

Good option for a snack after the temple Darshan...that's what I did. The AC room can be pricey, so I recommend you to use the normal seating. The vada and ghee rava dosa were very good, especially the 2 varieties of chutney. Finish it up with coffee.

I went with my friends it was an authentic south Indian food experience. We ordered ghee roast dosa, masala pudi dosa and masala dosa and it was really good. The place is like small mess but it had ac room also.

Neat and clean ambience. Must try tiffin items and coffee but bit costly. We had 2 sets of poori, standard peas was included in their masal. Parking for two wheelers and cars on road only. Service was quick and polite. Its near the kabaleshwarar temple. They do a good initiative by placing a bowl of water and a tub of pedigree for street dogs at their entrance.

If you are in Mylapore (Chennai) this is the place I recommend for South Indian food. Had this ghee roast yesterday and it was just amazing. Place is just opposite to main Gopuram of Sri Kapaleeswara Mandir.

Good vegetarian hotel with traditional way of preparation. Expensive in price. Dish tastes are excellent. Four persons table only available

The food taste is very worst. There will be a board like since 1955 but don't go for that or you will feel why you went. The rate of the items is very high. We can go to some big veg restaurants like sangeetha or Nithya amirtham in Mylapore. This hotel is waste of money and will affect your health.

It is authentic veg mess. Ghee rava dosa is must try. Cost is bit high for the ambience. It will look bit local but it’s good to try once. Situated very near to Mylapore temple. Podi items are burnt and plain dosa was undercooked. Hotel should try to maintain the quality for the cost they charge

Very old mess. I have been vining this place for the past 20 years now whenever I am in Chennai. This place never disappoints. Very limited veg menu. Go in if you like authentic South Indian dishes. Nothing fancy or the ambience. Just visit this place for the food taste and the experience.

Went here for Breakfast, this is one of the old mess in chennai. The place is so divine with wall full of Hindu Gods. The taste was good, idlys were little bigger than regular idly. If you are visiting Mylapore then you can try this place Cons: 1. You need be here with little patience coz we waited for 3 to 5 min for the serving ppl to take our order. 2. I feel the place is over priced. 1 Methu vadai cost 60rs and 2 idly cost around 60rs. which i felt costlier 3. They didnt serve sambar and it was Gosthu during sunday morning time.

Just Wow! I had a craving to taste authentic brahmins' style cooking and This place in Mylapore opposite to Lord Kapaleeshwarar Temple fulfilled my wish. I found this place randomly by a random temple priest's suggestion and I didn't regret visiting it. *An old hotel established decades ago. (1950). You shouldn't expect the modern ergonomic or the ambience. Such places are supposed to be embraced as they are and This is one such place. We dined in their AC room. *We tasted: Rava Pongal, Idlis, Ghee dosas (roast); The 3 different chuttneys, Avial, Sambar were phenomenal. *Finally, The Mylapore's Signature Filter coffee. I'm a true coffee lover and I still couldn't come out of their coffee spell. MY OVERALL EXPERIENCE : A perfect Vegetarian treat. The place is a bit small so it won't cater huge crowds. A bit over priced than the regular hotels but worth trying it. Special mention to the art work on their walls*

This place is a hidden gem in Mylapore (for people from other areas). Located just outside the main entrance of the Kapaleeswaran temple, this restaurant serves really delicious South Indian food. I had the rava kichidi, ghee plain dosa and the keera Vada. The cost came to 275 which seems slightly pricey, however the taste, quantity and quality of the food deserves five stars. The service is fast but the cleanliness needs to improve.
