English tour with knowledgeable guide. The history of the silver coins minted here is fascinating. Highly recommended. Tours run in Spanish, English and French at certain times daily and last one and a half hours.

(Translated by Google) It is an apology to Spanish colonialism. Maximum contradiction in a country like Bolivia. But although it is part of the story, I am bothered by the apology of the time given to the looting of wealth that gave fortune to an empire, brought death and slavery. To many Latinos, it seems that this story brings nostalgia and worries them. It is a historical site with architectural value and of course you have to make your own opinion.

(Translated by Google) Little information from the guides. They care more about you paying for taking pictures than giving explanations. There are many objects that have no description or of course explanation by the guide. Nothing recommended for 40 Bolivians (Original) Poca información por parte de los guías. (Translated by Google) I thought the attention was very bad since the staff is not even friendly at the time of attending, they close the place for as long as they want since 11 in the morning they did not let me in, they also did not let me in with my pet while being caged. This place does not even encourage tourism in Potosí being a very visited place.

A nice museum. Lots of artifacts that have been preserved well. However, as european tourist, I expected the guides to know at least some basic english. As result, not everything was explained well and it disrupted our experience of the museum.

Fantastic tour here—one of the best in the country. The guides were funny and knowledgeable and offered real insights into the life and times of Potosi’s heyday, and the exhibits inside the Mint are maintained well so that visitors can understand the conditions of the workers and the historical progression of the minting over the centuries. Certainly a tour worth taking.

Maybe the third time over the past 30 years and is getting worse! From the front desk the guide and the security! All are rude and with no interest in give a good service! Is one Price for the locals another price for the gringos and another for camera! No freedom to walk around like was before! With no good English speaking guides ether! I don’t understand how can you keep a work in this important museum with a lack of knowledge or desire to improve yourself! I don’t think this place will be in my place to visit or recommend again!

(Translated by Google) I found the visit more interesting than what I kept in expectations. The visit is all guided, which makes the tour interesting. The guide (sadly, I don't remember the name) worked passionately and knowingly. It is very interesting to know how difficult it was to manufacture coins in ancient times. And it's all so well preserved that it makes this place even more precious. I commend the visit to the Mint with praise. In addition to learning about manufacturing, there is a lot of art in place. To shoot internally you have to pay an expensive extra fee.

At 40Bs each this was great value for the hour and a half tour. The lady at reception, Cinda was so friendly as we arrived on Friday for the tour which was not on due to the Easter parade but she gave us lots of information on other things to do around Potosi and told us to come back the following day which we did!! The museum has all the original equipment used to mint the coins, including the only remaining wooden silver press sent over by the Spanish (it works too!!). We saw the silver coins that were minted from the 1500 and the amount of effort and labour that went into making them. The building itself is stunning, with 5 courtyards and rooms with high stone ceilings and beautiful detail. One of the best museums in South America I have been to and definitely worth the time to visit! (it is cold in there so bring a jumper!)

We took the French tour which cost us 40 Bolivian. You need to pay 20 Bolivian more in order to take pictures in the museum. It’s up to you but I did without it and took a lot of notes instead and worked out well. The tour is 1hour. I highly recommend it. The history of money in potosi allow you to understand the Spanish colonialism, how the indigenous and animals have been manipulated in order to gather the wealth to the great kingdom. Sad but real.

Unfortunately our english guide was not speaking that good English well that would not have been a big problem if he had a lot of knowledge about the history but even on that he was missing out. The order how we got „guided“ through the old and badly curated Museum was totally confusing. We for our selfe would have appreciated it if we got more information about the brutal abusion of the indegenous tribes and how the history of the silver mountain influenced the whole world and the kapitalism even until now! Still today on a daily base a lot of workers in the mine crah in accidents, suffer from lounge problems and die at a very young age around 40 years. I really don’t understand this lack of information. We were shocked about the baby mumies in the cathedral… this was degrading, at the wrong place and inappropriate. Potosí is a beautiful city rich of history and full of friendly and warm hearted people wich is worth visiting. This Museum could be so much better if the real history would be worked up well and presented different.

One of the most interesting museum I've seen! The guides tour was great, the location is fantastic and the history of mint in Potosi is fascinating. There are also quite a few old machines which were used in the production of coins.

A must see if you visit Potosí. Great artwork and a vital piece of history of the country.

  • 2/5 Amanda H. 5 years ago on Google
Maybe our expectations were a bit high as we read it was the best museum in South America. It was 20 minutes late opening and no one seemed to know where anyone was. While the exhibitions were impressive with lifesize recreations, we found the guide difficult to understand and the content lacking.

Unless you're really interested in that particular mint's history or are a numismatist, do not go. Foreigner fee 4 times higher than locals, additional 20 Bs for pictures, 40 for videos. A policeman in every room checking on you if you're not photographing. You pay quadruple as a foreigner but can only visit on a guided tour which is in Spanish. The facade looks neat but once you go inside the feel is ridiculous.

Enjoyable experience. The museum is well laid out and set in a colonial atmosphere. Suitable for adults and kids. Makes it more fun if you go with a guide

The building is really beautiful but the attention is bad. We did a guided tour as you don't have a choice and we couldn't understand anything. The guide wasn't speaking distinctly or fluent. She didn't let us enjoy the place as we only had 30 second to see exposition, painting, rooms before running to the other one. It's expensive and even if people tell you it's a must to see, it's not. You can't buy tickets in advance.

The mint is very well preserved and certainly interesting to see. Unfortunately the English guide was not good which made the whole experience boring for us. Also you must pay more to take photographs, that’s not okay.

  • 4/5 Vanderlei 6 years ago on Google
Excellent attraction in Potosi. The museum guides have great knowledge. They try to give as much information as possible about Bolivia Mint and its importance in Bolivia's history to the visitors. Downsides: If you want to take photos or record any videos with your camera, be prepared to buy another ticket just to take photos or record inside the rooms of the museum. Also, it was SO frustrating the amount of time they made us wait to start the guided visit... around 40 minutes. The reason, the personnel said, was that there weren't enough guides available at that moment.

  • 5/5 Renato C. 1 year ago on Google

Have to wait for a guide, only group tours available every often. Spots do go pretty fast. It was really interesting and artifacts were preserved very well. I can't recommend it enough, lots of history in Potosi.

  • 2/5 K. K. 1 year ago on Google
A pity that the museum closes at 15h, which makes it much harder to go there when Potosi is a night break on the journey between Uyuni and Sucre.

  • 4/5 Brian H G. 1 year ago on Google
The mint is super interesting For the machines of dfferents periods. They also have silver Coin collections and photos. We took the tour, which is 2 hours, a little too long for me.

  • 3/5 sam p. 6 years ago on Google
I'd give the place itself 4 stars but the English tour a 2 stars, so average a 3. Tour was rushed (tour guide didn't wait for all visitors to catch up before she started speaking) and only half the advertised time. Apparently the Spanish tour is better.

  • 1/5 Thomas L. 9 months ago on Google
I paid *extra* just so I could use my cellphone to take some pictures. And still they scolded me three times in front of the whole tour group because they said I was taking video with my phone and they warned me how they were watching me on security camera at all times. These people need to chill. The building is cool. The tour itself is a pretty normal tour, though especially slow. Parts are interesting, but it's about 30 minutes worth of information stretched out over almost 2 hours. People were literally sitting and waiting before the guide would continue to the next room. I spent 20 minutes looking at rocks in one room, trying to entertain myself without any additional information provided. It could have been an ok, boring tour, but their ridiculous intensity about a few cellphone photos made it one of the most negative and frustrating days of my entire trip. Even without that, I honestly wouldn't recommend it to others unless you have multiple hours to kill and have already done everything else in town.

Really interesting place with a great enthusiastic guide who spoke english (José I think). Lots to see, a great slice of Bolivian and Potosi history. 40 bolivianos pp for foreigners. A lot of the old engineering is still in place so it's much more interesting than a museum with just pictures.

  • 4/5 Gergely S. 5 years ago on Google
Interesting exhibit about coin minting starting from the 17th to the 20th century. A bit pricey though for 40 Bs and you might need to wait up to 1 hr for the compulsory guided tour to start.

Well-kept premises, excellent guide, many finds and very nice building, both inside and in the magnificent facade.
