The Gateway of India is one of India's most unique landmarks situated in the city of Mumbai. The colossal structure was constructed in 1924. Located at the tip of Apollo Bunder, the gateway overlooks the Mumbai harbor, bordered by the Arabian Sea in the Colaba district. The Gateway of India is a monument that marks India's chief ports and is a major tourist attraction for visitors who arrive in India for the first time. A favourite spot for tourists, nowadays, this monument attracts vendors, food stalls and photographers. History The main objective behind the construction of the Gateway of India was to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay (Mumbai). In March 1911, Sir George Sydenham Clarke, who was then the Governor of Bombay, laid down the monument's first foundation. Although, this plan was approved only in 1914, the reclamations at Apollo Bunder were completed only in 1919. The architectural design of Gateway of India was fashioned by architect, George Wittet. It took 4 years to complete this monument's construction.

It is a very nice place to hangout with friends and family on a Saturday night drive or in monsoon season. Navy day is also celebrated here and is absolutely spectacular. Naval performances consists of their helicopter show and much more. The public restroom over here is not that clean. It stinks. Still it’s a pretty lovely place.

It was worth a visit. It was a very pleasant, open, breezy, free place to be in. Now it feels closed and crammed. The approach is narrow, crowded and uncomfortable. Cannot go within the Gateway Arch or even close to it. The Bay is beautiful but because of the park and its fenced in areas it feels claustrophobic. The vast openness of the area has been effectively destroyed. It is better to walk on seaside road, from where the bay with its sailing boats, yachts is a breath taking sight. Historic significance has been reduced to the chaotic traffic, hap hazard parking, crowds and noise. There is no serenity or sanctity of the Gateway & its importance to Mumbai. The sightseeing boats are not the most comfortable or clean. The life jackets are strapped inside plastic bags to the ceiling. In case of an emergency the boat is likely to sink before a life jacket can be taken out. Most times passengers have to hop from one bobbing boat to another shaky boat for the bay tour. It is not an outing recommended for the elderly, small kids, or anyone who is concerned about safety and security.

An Iconic location......must try is a ferry to the Elephanta caves. On the(half an hour+) ferry ride you'll see huge cargo ships, lots of sea gulls and of course the Elephanta caves. The return ride gives a good view of the Mumbai skyline.....

When we think about mumbai this place comes in our mind as a symbol. It have unique design. Love this place. Avoid to go here on weekends because there is rush during this period.

Awesome place .The Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of King George 5th  and Queen Mary to Mumbai, prior to the Delhi Durbar in December 1911. The monument's design is a combination of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. The arch is of Muslim style while the decorations are of Hindu style. The Gateway of India is considered as "symbolic monument" that represents the city of Mumbai . The Gateway of India is a major tourist destination in Mumbai and a popular gathering spot for locals, street vendors and photographers. The Gateway of India is the most unique landmarks, not only of Mumbai city, but of India as well. The massive structure was built in the year 1924, overlooking the Mumbai harbor, with its location at the tip of the Apollo Bunder (Port). This famous tourist’s destination is actually a monument that is marked as a principal port of India. The Gateway of India was designed by architect George Vittet. After the independence, the last British army had gone back through this gate .This building is called the gate of India for ships coming from the sea route of the Arabian Sea . Gateway of India is one of the most important landmarks in Mumbai and primarily a top attraction on every tourist’s list thanks to its grandeur and undying charm. The structure serves as a beautiful remembrance of the rich cultural heritage and its colonial past.  Gateway of India the first structure to welcome visitors entering by sea and is popularly known as the Taj Mahal of Mumbai. Apart from its’ historic importance, it is also known for its riveting sight of stunning yachts and boats sailing in the azure sea. Gateway of India gleams like an uncrowned prince especially on rainy days as well as during sunrises and sunsets.
