I saw Awful condition of Mahim Fort now. The bitter truth is it's not considered as Fort rather it's known as Mahim Fort Society. People had created their residence around Fort in such a way that no one came to know that there was existence of any Fort. I don't know is it legal or Illegal. Somewhere we are loosing our Heritage. You can see walls of Fort from Sea side but from city no one can know whether we have such Fort in this locality. I think we should take some measures to prevent our such Heritage.

This a glaring example of government apathy. A historical monument has been eaten up by illegal slums.

One of the richest place in mumbai wrt history. It has great history thread behind. In 1516, Portuguese commander Dom Joao de Monoy entered the Mahim Creek and defeated the commander of Mahim fort.[3] The fort was the site of frequent skirmishes between the Portuguese and the Ali Shah, a Gujarati ruler, before the island of Mahim was appropriated from Bahadur Shah of Gujarat by the Portuguese in 1534. In 1661, the Portuguese ceded the island of Mahim as dowry to Charles II of England. After the English gained control of the fort, it was strengthened by Sir Thomas Grantham in 1684,[2] and became a strategic watchtower against possible Portuguese attacks, and later from the Marathas. In 1772, the Portuguese attempted to attack this fort, but they were repelled by the British with cannonballs.[2] The Mount Mary's Basilica was damaged during this encounter. According to historical accounts, the fort had 100 soldiers and 30 cannons at that time. The fort was captured by the British during the First Anglo-Maratha War

Completely taken over by slum people. They don't even allow to enter. There is another entrance opposite to the bus depot. You can take that and roam around in the jogging area and watch the sea and fort at a distance.

The new renovation is wonderful! The open gym is good too! But the way to go reach this place is slightly tricky. The place has a foul smell always because of fishermen boats and garbage from the sea. It's less crowded in the mornings. I think the place is absolutely safe cause it's right behind the mahim causeway police station.

Local govt is doing nothing to remove encroachments and restore this fort to its old glory. This place has a history to it and we have to make sure that we pass this on to our future generation.

The Mahim Fort is a fort in Mahim in Mumbai, Maharashtra state, India. Strategically located in the Mahim Bay, the fort overlooks Worli to the south, Bandra to the north, and Mahim to the east. The origins of the fort are unclear, but it occupies a strategic location that has been frequently contested

Fort is in absolutely disgusting condition. Inside is now full of shanties/jhopadpatti, Outside isn't any better either. Worli fort despite being surrounded by shanties is better for visit than mahim fort.

There isn't much fort structure to be seen but you can still go there as it's less crowded than dadar chowpatty. The way to fort is bit tricky. I had to through chawl but the people living in area of Mahim fort were nice they guided me properly.

Very very disappointed , I would recommend just go once and look at the pathetic condition, and who allowed them to stay inside in the name of mahim fort cooperation society, and just beside there is office of deputy commissioner of Mumbai, this fort is no more , u can just see walls and doors but it's call sealed by the locals

Mahim Fort is the oldest fort in Mumbai. Connecting the east-west coasts of Mumbai and guarding the bay of Mahim, this fort was known as the gatekeeper of the waterway. At the mouth of the Mahikavati aka Mahim bay, which separates the islands of Mumbai from the mainland, Pratap Bimba Raja built the Mahim fort in 1140 AD and established his capital there. And by calling people doing various types of business, trade, enterprise, science And the seeds of culture were planted on the island of Mumbai. After the fort came under the control of the British, the English architect Jerrold Augier rebuilt the existing fort. In 1672 AD, the Portuguese attacked the fort of Mahim. At that time the fort was equipped with 100 soldiers and 30 guns; So the Portuguese could not conquer it. Then on 14 February 1689 Siddhi Yakut Khan of Janjira attacked Mumbai with 2500 soldiers. At that time, after conquering the fort of Mahim, he ravaged the area for a year, looting Protected by strong fortifications and bastions on all sides, the entrance of this fort stands as a testimony of British architecture. The crafts on it and the raised pillars on both sides can be seen. Due to encroachment in the fort, nothing else can be seen. Mahim fort on the sea can be reached in 10 minutes if you get off at Mahim (West) station on the Western Railway and walk towards Mahim beach along Mori Road.

This fort is not fort anymore. Locals have constructed their houses and use whole place as they want. Some of them use fort and surrounding place for their business. Whenever you visit this place you'll find heavily construction on it and it's not open for anyone to see from inside. Sea facing protection wall of fort is destroyed and not in good condition. Garbage is everywhere. I'm giving 1 start just because of fort is still standing with new construction and can't give 0 πŸ˜‚.

As of now, there are just remnants of the fort walls. Nothing to see except ruins. Well, there's hope for restoration promised by the BMC. Awaiting in anticipation.

Could not find entry to this place. Tried a lot. Seems the nearby location may be encroached upon hence blocking the way to the fort.
