Mahim
Fort
is
the
oldest
fort
in
Mumbai.
Connecting
the
east-west
coasts
of
Mumbai
and
guarding
the
bay
of
Mahim,
this
fort
was
known
as
the
gatekeeper
of
the
waterway.
At
the
mouth
of
the
Mahikavati
aka
Mahim
bay,
which
separates
the
islands
of
Mumbai
from
the
mainland,
Pratap
Bimba
Raja
built
the
Mahim
fort
in
1140
AD
and
established
his
capital
there.
And
by
calling
people
doing
various
types
of
business,
trade,
enterprise,
science
And
the
seeds
of
culture
were
planted
on
the
island
of
Mumbai.
After
the
fort
came
under
the
control
of
the
British,
the
English
architect
Jerrold
Augier
rebuilt
the
existing
fort.
In
1672
AD,
the
Portuguese
attacked
the
fort
of
Mahim.
At
that
time
the
fort
was
equipped
with
100
soldiers
and
30
guns;
So
the
Portuguese
could
not
conquer
it.
Then
on
14
February
1689
Siddhi
Yakut
Khan
of
Janjira
attacked
Mumbai
with
2500
soldiers.
At
that
time,
after
conquering
the
fort
of
Mahim,
he
ravaged
the
area
for
a
year,
looting
Protected
by
strong
fortifications
and
bastions
on
all
sides,
the
entrance
of
this
fort
stands
as
a
testimony
of
British
architecture.
The
crafts
on
it
and
the
raised
pillars
on
both
sides
can
be
seen.
Due
to
encroachment
in
the
fort,
nothing
else
can
be
seen.
Mahim
fort
on
the
sea
can
be
reached
in
10
minutes
if
you
get
off
at
Mahim
(West)
station
on
the
Western
Railway
and
walk
towards
Mahim
beach
along
Mori
Road.
