Amazing place. One of the lost places in Mumbai. It's kind of difficult to find as it's situated in middle of street, but i have tagged the correct location from.where one can visit. The surrounding are not good and the place is not maintained. I hope the authorities do something to maintain this place . There are beautiful and ancients sculpture still neatly visible and helpful.

Jogeshwari Caves are very old, from the 5th to 6th centuries. These caves tell us about the old Buddhist culture and art in India. But now, pandits have taken over these caves, and they perform Brahmanical rituals there. The designs and carvings in the caves are all related to Buddhism similar to Elephanta caves, Gharapuri. The caves are made in a special layout, with places for meditation and prayer. Jogeshwari Caves are a special place in Mumbai to learn about old Buddhist art and culture. It's a quiet spot in a busy city. If you are interested in history or want some peace, it's a good place to visit.

A group of Caves which date back to 550 CE, the Jogeshwari Caves are an important Heritage site. Its structure is representative of the last stage of Mahayana Buddhist architecture and is a marvel to look at. The Caves also comprise of three temples, with each temple dedicated to a separate deity. It's not often that you find such a site to be located in the heart of a marketplace, surrounded by narrow streets, vendors, shops and humble dwellings. It's also located right next to the busy Western Express Highway. Ironically, in spite of being located at a location which observes crowds of daily commuters and customers, the Caves only draw a handful of visitors on an average. Thus, this place of immense historical significance remains to be hidden away by the bustle of modernisation and has been mostly forgotten by the masses. On the bright side, the lack of influx helps in preventing the degradation of the site. However, further efforts should be made at its preservation and maintenence, especially considering the location of the Caves makes it highly susceptible to damage. The inner structures of the Cave could also use some better lighting but perhaps, it's better just the way it is as the darkness adds to its allure and mystery. This is definitely a place worth checking out for both its spectacle and historical rarity.

Life time opportunity to visit place where people worshiped 2000 years ago. No machines no modern technology. They just had faith. What they made was amazing. Its not in the best shape now but amazing to see their work and level of dedication to shape a mountain. Also explains reason to name Jogeshwari.

This place is screwed. Its full with the localites goofing around.. And most of the times its full with pandits who have littered all around. You ll see them drying their clothes, bathing over there and sleeping around. This will be anyways converted in a temple in few years. When I heard that this place have carvings similar to Elephanta and Ellora, I was excited, but I was really disappointed with this place. The archaelogical department needs to step in if they need to save this historic monument.

Jogeshwari caves located off the Western Express Highway, and are surrounded by encroachments. The caves are accessed through a long flight of stairs into the main hall of this cavernous space. It has many pillars and a Lingam at the end. Idols of Dattatreya, Hanuman, and Ganesh line the walls. There are also relics of two doormen. The cave also has a murti and footprints of goddess Jogeshwari (Yogeshwari), whom the area is named after. The goddess is considered a Kuladevi by some Marathi people, and also worshipped by some migrant groups from Gujarat.

They are one of the original tribes, who migrated to Bombay in 13th century AD with Yaduvanshi king, Raja Bhimdev. Somvanshi Kshatriya Pathare (SKP) (belonging to the lunar race) are known to be related to Prithviraj Chauhan of Delhi and Bhoj Raja of Madhya Pradesh. According to tradition, the Panchkalshis derive their name from the fact that their former headman used to sit on a canopied throne surmounted by five kalashas. The primary language spoken by these people is Marathi mixed with Vadval. They are mainly involved in agriculture and carpentry but engineers and doctors and other service professions are also more common these days. SKPs are a prosperous community now and have migrated all over the world. These people are mainly based in Mumbai and nearby places like Alibag,Nagaon, Uran, Cheul, Revdanda, Murud, Maap gaon, Kihim and others. Common surnames in this community are Goregaonkar, Chogle, Bhatte, Navalkar, Patkeshwar, Cheulkar, Mhatre, Bhagat,Paralkar, Worlikar,Dadarkar,Dandekar,Date, Raote, Chemburkar, Ovalekar,Mahimkar, Pathare, Raut,Pradhan,Vaidya, Naik, Surnaik, Tekalkar, Thakur, Patil, Rath, Gharat, Mantri, Ule, Pansare, Devare, Rane and others. It may be noted that several of these names derive from actual places in Mumbai, e.g. Goregaonkar from Goregaon, Dadarkar from Dadar, Chemburkar from Chembur and so forth.Pachkalshi as well Chaukalshi tribe are found living along the coastal belt of Mumbai & Goa. They mostly worship Tuljapur's Bhavani mata, Kolhapur's Ambabai, Karla's Ekviraa aai, and Jejuri's Khandoba. They also worship several goddesses (unique to each clan) who have ancient temples around Mumbai like the Hardai and Harbai at Malad, and Jogeshwari Devi (from where Jogeshwari suburb takes it name), Shilai Devi (Beje Nasik), Satmadevi (Mulgaon, Vasai) and Mahalaxmi near Peddar Road (Mumbai) It has been noted in the history of the Marathas in relation to the annexation of the Vasai Fort that the Naiks were a prominent key to get this coveted fort. The Naiks who posed as petty workers or carpenters entered the Fort and mapped it. This crucial information was used by the Marathas to create a base in the important Vasai and Sopara area, which was a major trading port in the times. The Chogles were credited to be the navy builders of the Maratha Navy. They were rewarded by the ruling Marathas with land near Mumbai, which now constitutes Borivali (Dattapada & Babhai) and the surrounding suburbs. Chintaman Chogle was involved in the building of Gateway of India under the supervision of architect George Wittet. He supplied the wooden industrial patterns (molds) to the British which formed the framework for the imposing structure.

Very good spacious place. Old well built structure. Hosts main temples of jogeshwari Devi, lord Siva, and smaller places for Ganesha and Hanuman. Very poorly maintained. No boards or directions to locate things. Hard to walk along too.Spending a little money can turn this into a nice tourist attraction.

It's a nice place to visit it is having temple inside caves. Best time to visit here is in morning coz in morning there is no noise so it feels very good. Some students come here to study as this place is quite. The only problem is that the place is not maintained well the backside of the caves is not maintained so there is garbage and water logging some times. The temple closes early in evening. Please like if you find this helpful this motivates me to review more such places. Thank You.

The caves of Jogeshwari are the cave temples of ancient Hinduism and Buddhism. Which is located at Jogeshwari in Mumbai. These caves are 5000 thousand years old. According to historian and scholar Walter Spink, Jogeshwari's caves are the oldest and largest Hindu cave temples in India. The caves are located next to the Western Express Highway, the area is surrounded by pressure and is being used as a temple. These caves are becoming extinct due to its dreadful condition and are infested with bats. These caves filled with ravines can be entered into the main room by a long CDO. It has many columns and a gender at the end. Statues of Dattatreya, Hanuman and Ganesha are carved in the walls of these caves. There are also two guards. These caves contain statues and steps of Jogeshwari (Yogeshwari), from which the area gets its name. Jogeshwari is considered to be the family goddess of some Marathi people. People who come from Gujarat for trade also worship this goddess.

The saying is that, these caves are the oldest known Hindu caves. There is no Buddhist influence on its architecture. In the middle of the city, it lies almost abandoned with very few visitors. It would be difficult to reach this place as locals on the road itself are not aware of such a caves. There are temples inside and some Puja is going on. It is a protected monument with entry restrictions and securities.

Unique place in Mumbai.... surrounding ambiance is not so much great. This place required more attention from government for preserving heritage, some area of this cave has been destroyed by locals by making it a place to pee. So so experiance.

It is quite difficult to find the Cave. It's kind of Underground Cave with God statues. People nearby call it Jogeshwari Mandir. From that mandir you need to simply go little ahead to find this cave. As soon as you enter the cave you will feel cold due to less sunlight.

I had visited once earlier during monsoons, it is quite dark inside but the place inside is still good This time however, the person inside (probably caretaker of the Mandir inside) had kept closed the entry to the caves on Sunday afternoon until 4.30pm. We reached at 2 pm and we're denied entry. Why on a Sunday when tourists visit you keep caves closed? Are they allowed to keep the gate closed? Why are they denying entry on a weekend to tourists? Also the government is sleeping. All the encroachments and slums in the surrounding are severely affecting this protected monument.
