Ironically, on the steps overlooking the Matthias Gate is a monument to Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the founder of the Czechoslovakia republic after the abolishment of monarchy in the Austrian-Hungary empire. A symbol of democracy steps away from the symbol of an empire. I wonder if the monument has been placed exactly on the spot looking on the Castle for a reason. Before you head in the Castle, take a moment on the square and enjoy the view overlooking the city. This is one of the many beautiful vantage points in the Hradčany District but can be the most busy during peak summer months. I was lucky enough to arrived in the evening when the space is far quieter.

A noble statue of a great but modest man. Masaryk essentially founded Czechoslovakia at the end of WWI from some remains of the Habsburg Empire. He was the first president of Czechoslovakia, which was a successful democracy in the difficult period between the wars, when so many other democracies succumbed to fascism. Frequently you will find that someone has left fresh flowers at the foot of the statue.

This statue is located just in front of Hrancany Castle and right from the statue there is a place where you have beautiful view on Prague city (see other pictures taken from this place) I recommend this place especially for the Prague view.

A bronze statue of T. G. M. was unveiled at the Hradčanské Square, close to Salmovský Palace, on the occasion of the 150thanniversary of his birth. President Václav Havel and the American Secretary of State Madeleine Albright attended the festive unveiling.

I went here for sightseeing the other day, it was an unbearably hot day, but a truck came and squirted cold water on us. It was enjoyable.

Beautiful area. But probably not the best idea for summer time because of huge number of visitors.
