The church, the only one of that name in our country, is a Gothic building from the 14th century, which was also signed by the builder Petr Parléř. It was and is the parish church of this hidden and somewhat mysterious part of Prague, as if created for adventurous literary creation (Stínadla). In addition, questions for archaeologists still arise here, because there was already a Romanesque sanctuary (grave of St. Agnes of the Czech?).

The Church of St. Haštal should be the only church in Bohemia dedicated to St. Hastal. St. Hastal is usually depicted as a young knight in a cloak with a sword and a princely cap, holding a martyr's palm in his hand. The church is located approximately where the Romanesque three-nave basilica was supposed to be located in the second half of the 12th century. The current church has the shape of an irregular four-nave basilica with a tower above the western field of the south aisle and a sacristy with a treasury on the floor on the north side of the presbytery. The church's furnishings are mainly Baroque from the period after 1730, some of the altars and statues were taken during the renovation of the interior after 1883. The oldest part of the furnishings should be a pewter baptismal font from 1550.

V letech 2010-2012 zde probíhaly rozsáhlé restaurátorské práce. Dnes se v tomto chrámu opět konají pravidelné bohoslužby, otevřeno je i pro turisty. Pozoruhodný gotický Kostel sv. Haštala stojí na Starém Městě na náměstí pojmenovaném po světci. Dříve na tomto místě byl chrám postavený v 12. století podle kánonů románského stylu. Pravděpodobně iniciátory výstavby nového kostela v letech 1330-1375, poblíž městského hřbitova, byli němečtí rytíři.
