Great museum, everything is well explained in english. Temporary exhibition ground floor + permanent exhibition first floor. The permanent exhibition gather different type of instruments in each rooms. They have really beautiful pieces. In every room, you have a screen and headphones to listen to the instruments presented and have more info about it. I really recommend if you like music. You learn a lot.

The National Museum – Czech Museum of Music (České muzeum hudby) is on Karmelitská 4, Praha 1 - Malá Strana, Czech Republic. The new seat of the Czech Museum of Music is located in the former Baroque church of St. Mary Magdalene at Lesser Side, built in the 17th Century according to the proposal of Francesco Caratti. The church was gradually rebuilt after the dissolution of the Dominican Monastery in 1783. Among other things, it served as a Police barracks and archive. The unusual symbiosis of the early Baroque church architecture with the classicist adjustment of usage and newly finished reconstruction of the Museum offers visitors a detail of an impressive combination of monumentality. Opening hours: - January – December: opem on Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun from 10:00 to 18:00 Entrance fee: - Basic: 120 CZK - Reduced: 80 CZK - Free admission: children up to 15 years; children from children’s homes or SOS children’s villages; holders of physical disability cards (ZTP, ZTP/P and people accompanying them); holders of cards: ICOM, Slovak National Museum, the National Museum Society, Benefit card of the European GNSS Agency – the Ministry of Transport, Prague Card, employee of a contributory organization of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic

The Czech Museum of Music in Prague is a harmonious blend of history, technology, and artistic expression. The museum beautifully showcases the rich musical heritage of the Czech Republic through a diverse range of exhibits, from historical instruments to manuscripts and audio recordings. The interactive displays and multimedia presentations offer an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages. The museum's attention to detail in presenting the evolution of music in the region, along with its emphasis on renowned composers and performers, makes it a must-visit for music enthusiasts. Whether you're a classical music aficionado or have a general interest in musical history, the Czech Museum of Music provides a symphony of knowledge and appreciation in the heart of Prague.

(Translated by Google) The museum was really great. It is only one floor and therefore not so exhausting. You can try out a few new instruments, of course I would have loved to try out the historical instruments. Admission is completely okay with 120 crowns.

Amazing museum for every musician and people who are interested in music. Great examples of musical instruments of 500 years that are still copied or even played. Great part of interaction or even for kids.

Interesting museum with exhibition divided by music instrument types. Many bizarre and beautiful instruments. My favorite is interactive electronic synthesizer exhibition with a guide that shows what’s what.

We went for the lovely reviews. I think we might have expected more/or a bit much. Don’t take me wrong, the collection is impressive and in general we had a nice time. However, a lit of stuff wasn’t working. In the interactive room where you can try various instruments, two out of four were out of order, including theremin which we were most excited about. Multiple of the audio parts where one can listen to the sound of the old school instruments were also not working / or not well, with the headphones being broken, or just one earphone playing, or s lit of static. One part of the first floor was smelling horribly, probably something with the toilets nearby. Four rooms were also completely dark, the electricity was not working, we had to use our phones as flashlights and did not get yo listen to anything there. One more thing. Having a single interactive room (as the first room of an exhibition) is, in our experience, not a good idea. Visitors pile up here, waiting to try something (while half is not working). Everything plays (loudly) at the same time which gets nervewrecking very soon, and one doesn’t enjoy this experience. Overall, a nice museum, informative- and all is available in English, which is great. Just the electronics and things to try should get an update not to feel neglected.

We're the kind of people who love a good music museum. Just letting you know that for context. We loved this one! They boast, credibly, as far as I can tell, a pianoforte played by Mozart, a couple pianos played by Liszt, and one that belonged to Smetana. There are lots of historic keyboard instruments (and a musical staircase you will enjoy), a fairly astonishing collection of stringed instruments, and a huge variety of historic wind and brass instruments, including some delightful oddities .There are also hands-on displays that are fun and informative. One thing we noticed at several Prague museums, including this one, is the extraordinary amount of highly specific historical context in the commentary attached to many of the items. You could easily miss the nondescript entrance to this museum, but there are musical wonders inside.

Outside of the regular touristic spots, but with a good collection of old instruments, including Mozart' piano, interactive part for kids with link to the music of the animals, good accustics and a piano to play if you feel inspired. It would be great if the exhibition staff speaks English. One of the ladies was very jolly and helpful despite the fact that we could not communicate much - please great her.

Visitors and connoisseurs of music and musical instruments and recording equipment would definitely enjoy the large collection of the museum. Audio guide offers details in a number of languages and samples of the unique sounding of some of the instruments on display.

A huge collection of western music instruments. I would suggest to add some eastern instruments too! and also great for children who want to get familiar with music. I wish I had visited here when I was a litle kid

We had a pleasant time during our visit to this small but enjoyable museum. You can even play some modern and classic instruments in the museum, which was a nice surprise. Better to visit at the closing hour to enjoy the instruments without people around.

I’m totally stunned and amazed by this museum of music. Quality experiences of Czech classical music and some instruments, especially pianos and theremin, by your hands are greatly assured. So awe-inspiring that I bought some Czech music scores there! 100% recommended.

It was a wonderful experience, they have a few hundred instruments on display from the last four centuries and interactive panels that allow you to listen to them and also give you food for thought with tidbits of info While the permanent exhibition is good enough for the price, it was the temporary one that struck me deeply, a presentation of the history of music in Communist Czechoslovakia

Interesting seasonal exhibit on contemporary music and culture ("Import Export Rock and Roll") and the permanent collection of musical instruments has several different instruments that aren't as popular now. It also had several interactive exhibits, which was great. But all together, it's not super extensive and didn't take very long to see.

Quite an interesting museum, with many unique instruments on display. Two stars less for two intimidatingly pushy staff members at the museum, who followed us and summoned us to hurry up continuously and with an irritated voice, 35 minutes before closing time. We counterreacted by taking our time. I’d advice you to do the same when these specific staff members unnecessarily urge you to hurry up.

If this isn't on your list then I recommend adding it. So many beautiful and unique instruments. The tour is very well laid out and the main hall is absolutely amazing. They have a piano in the main hall for all to play. The staff was very helpful with giving you directions.

A not very big museum, housed by the building of a former church. The building is imposingat the inside part but only in a few rooms on the ground floor and the first floor are exhibits. You need about an hour to see everything (if you are not a fan of musical instruments and want to read all the details). There is a cloackroo, where you can leave your luggage for free, a small souvenir shop and a cafe. The museum has quite a few old and interesting musical instruments, including an Amati violin from 1650.

Super fun cause they have a bunch of instruments that you can play. Drum walls, the penny organ and a theremin were my favorites. Don't have any beautiful old Stradivarius or super famous makers (though a few amati), or famous keyboards -- but there are some fascinating instruments on display and it's a fun time!👍

  • 5/5 Sarah M. 1 year ago on Google
It’s a cute 2 to 3 hour museum, depending on how much you want to read or interact with the exhibits. The first floor has an exhibition on animals and music, while the second has displays on different instruments. There are several instruments visitors can try out, such as a theremin, electric guitar, and a small organ. Note that the entrance is to the left of the exhibits you see from the road.

As a musician, I loved this museum very much. I enjoyed it a lot and even learned about instruments I had never seen and heard before. It’s very enjoyable for anyone interested in music, and mostly for kids, as everything on the ground floor is designed for them to interact with the instruments. Almost all instruments can be heard with headphones on boots with recordings. Moreover it’s very affordable (around 5 euros per ticket), so it’s great quality for a great price as well.

Interesting, with an impressive collection of musical instruments, but somewhat used and outdated. Many exhibits were damaged, broken or not functioning when we went. I would also loved to know more about the history behind the evolution of music, rather than experiment. Perhaps for children it can be interesting, but for adults not no much.

Such a fun little museum! If you're thinking about which museums to visit in Prague this should definitely be on your list. Takes about 2h to go through it all pretty well so you'll still have lots of time to explore the rest of the city if you're only here a few days. It's also a very interactive museum which you'll love no matter if you're a kid or like me just a kid at heart. One of the most entertaining museums I've seen! Also this museums has some fun history to learn about unlike some of the other museums in Prague which are just targeted towards tourists.

The permanent exhibition had quite a lot to show with a multitude of possibilities to interact. But what wowed us was the exhibition about animals and music. The various aspects were highlighted with great attention to detail. Very creative and informative. Definitely recommended! :)

Lovely music museum. Instead of boring collections where a bench to sit on is usually the most interesting exhibit piece, this museum is highly interactive. There are instruments you can try playing! Should you find one such electric guitar, start jamming and other visitors will join you with vocals 🎸 Surprise the visitors behind you, entering the room, with a wedding march on little kit organ 👰 Besides that, there are recordings of previous century Czech music with music videos. Have fun watching Ivan Mladek riding a motorbike 🛵

This was actually far more interesting than I expected. It isnt a massive place and wont take too long to go round but its well worth it. The building itself is really lovely and the exhibits are many and varied. There are lots of beautiful old instruments, lots of strange instruments you have never heard of and the option to play a few and listen to recordings of most. I wpuld have like to see more paintings/photography of music through the ages and a few of the listening posts have obviously been used to death and where not working but anyone with even a passing interest in music will enjoy this i think.

Such a wonderful museum! A pure pearl in the heart of Prague we discovered on the last day of our visit! The museum is not overloaded with exhibits, but each of them is a priceless peace of art, from both musical and visual point of view. You can find the instruments on which Mozart and Liszt played during their visits to Prague. Moreover, this is one of a very few museums I have personally visited where you can play on some musical instruments, such as piano, harp, mini-organ and drums. So if you are interested in music or you like to play on instruments from time to time, it would be a great chance to both educate yourself and have a bit of fun. The workers are nice and always ready to help. International students can also buy a ticket with a reduced price. I highly recommend to visit this museum. It deserves more attention and appreciations from tourists.
