Great Obelisk as far as obelisks go (and I’ve seen a few). I think the critiques of its proximity to the cathedral are a bit over cooked - it really does stand on its own - literally. It is an obelisk. In many ways, it reminds me of the pyramid from Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, which I have just finished playing (still waiting for the final episode of the Fate of Atlantis DLC to drop). You don’t need to buy a ticket to see this fantastic obelisk, so don’t line up, and don’t skip the line. Get the tram to see this obelisk, that way you don’t sweat on the journey to it. Also, Prague gets really busy, so if you just need to quickly see something, this particular obelisk is a quick win. But if you were thinking of flying from Australia JUST for this obelisk, I’d say you should check out some other things as well, such as the huge cathedral next to it.

(Translated by Google) The area of the third courtyard of Prague Castle is quite extensive. And, despite the fact that very massive architectural structures are located along the entire perimeter, there is no feeling of an enclosed and pressurized space. The first thing that attracts attention is a large obelisk, which stands out sharply from the general architecture of the environment of the third courtyard. It was solemnly opened on October 28, 1928. The obelisk itself is dedicated to two memorable events - the 10th anniversary of the formation of Czechoslovakia and the memory of those who fell in the First World War. It is located next to the St. Vitus Cathedral and the Old House of Probst. Its author is the architect Jozhe Plecnik, therefore the obelisk is often called the Plecnik Monolith. It should be noted that no one has ever worked with such a large monolith in Europe - this was the first experience of this kind. Therefore, the process of manufacturing, transporting, processing and erecting an obelisk is very unique. The obelisk itself was made in the city of Mrakotin, which actually dictated its third name - the Mrakotinsky monolith. Delivery by train from Mrakotina to Prague took place in December 1926 and lasted as much as 7 days. It was transported carefully and only in the daytime at a speed of 15 km / h, and in difficult areas it was altogether 5 km / h. Until the spring of 1926, the obelisk lay at the Prague-Dejvice station, and then for 22 days (!) Transported it to Prague Castle. During delivery, the upper part of the monolith broke off and disappeared. And so with a truncated top, the obelisk stood until 1996, - while, at the request of the Czech Republic’s President Václav Havel, the top was supplemented with a metal gilded pyramid, which is considered a symbol of democracy.

You can't miss it. They placed a big picture of the obelisk next to the obelisk, in case you missed the obelisk but saw the picture instead.

A fairly large obelisk located by the St. Vitus Tower. The Statue of St. George is also nearby. The obelisk is quite tall but it is over-shadowed by the Cathedral.

(Translated by Google) The obelisk in Prague Castle is a granite monolith and World War I monument designed by Jože Plečnik in Prague Castle in the Czech Republic. It is 16 meters high. It is located in the Third Castle Courtyard. The obelisk was donated by Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. It was founded in late 1928 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the founding of the first Czechoslovak Republic. The obelisk was much larger at first, but when it moved to its location in 1928, it was broken in two and only some of it could be saved.

In May 1921, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk decided to reveal a memorial plaque to the Czechoslovaks who fell in World War II at Prague Castle. However, the castle architect Josip Plečnik suggested to him that he would erect a granite column in the third courtyard. According to historical records, he justified his proposal by saying that stone expresses a thousand-year-old mass and that using a monolith the Czech granite acquires a resonant name. In addition, the columns of freedom were built by all the victorious world powers. The first monolith from the famous Mrákotín quarry in 1923 broke in the road accident and it was necessary to break the second monolith. It was successfully transported to Prague and was erected at the beginning of November 1928.

(Translated by Google) Much later (1928), in comparison with its surroundings, there is a rather mysterious retribution among fundamental historical creations, although official historiography finds justification. But, if you include the imagination, the World War I memorial could be installed anywhere in Prague. Here, at first glance, it does not fit into the surroundings, if you do not know the true meaning of the meaning of such obelisks, primarily associated with Ancient Egypt in our country.

Adjacent to St Virus is the Old Provosty that was once the seat of the bishop. At the corner of the building, what looks like someone took a bite off its side, is a statue of St Wenceslas. The obelisks that stands in the courtyard surrounded by renaissance buildings is the memorial to victims of the First World War. The renaissance buildings are actually new annexes to the Old Royal Palace, part of the original construction of the castle residence.

Love or hate it. A big obelisk in the courtyard. Obviously a gift from another country but not sure. I keep wondering how much effort it must have taken to get huge pieces like this from one to the other place :-)

The obelisk was nothing spectacular. Just looks like a solid marble slab in the shape of an obelisk. Doesn't really fit the old world castle theme of Prague Castle. I almost missed it and didn't take to take a photo of it.
