An absolutely outstanding little garden, run by Perennial Gardens, a charity which helps people in need who work or worked in horticulture. Although it is just one acre, there is so much to see. Small separate gardens within the one acre, water features, wrought iron work, woodwork. Spent 2 hours looking around. The cafe serves amazing breakfasts and light lunches at very reasonable prices using top quality produce, locally sourced and you can taste the quality and, as a coffee enthusiast, the Americano was just gorgeous. The gift shop was well stocked with very relevant items, so beautifully set out. Plenty of parking. Can’t recommend this gorgeous garden highly enough.

Visited the garden on 3rd September. Although it only has limited parking we had no problems finding a space. We were greeted at the entrance by a friendly and informative guide who gave us a brief overview of the gardens and amenities. As it was close to lunchtime the first stop was the cafe. This has a large seating both inside and in the garden. The food was good, we both had Paninies which were very good and at a good price. The facilities are spotlessly clean. You can visit the cafe without having to pay entry to the garden. The garden although is only 1 acre the design crams in so many small gardens and walkways it seems so much larger. The planting and hard landscaping is wonderful and is well worth the visit. Price is £7 which is very reasonable and even better is part of the gardeners world 2 for 1 ticket offer. The annual price is also a very cheap option at only .£30. There is also a shop and also plant sales again at reasonable prices. I would highly recommend a visit

A small perfectly formed garden of different ‘rooms’ ranging from dry succulents to lush exotics. The garden is immaculately maintained and a joy to visit. Lots to inspire and the nursery is excellent for herbaceous plants. The cafe is good too and all the staff are exceptionally friendly.

Absolutely beautiful garden, spent a lovely chilled few hours with mum wandering round and having a tasty light lunch at the cafe. All staff were so friendly & helpful. The paths are, by design, a little uneven, so mum had to take it slow, but there are plenty of seats dotted round to rest and take in the gorgeous vistas.

A nice interesting garden with cafe and shop. Also plant sales. The car park has good bicycle parking and reinforced grass parking for cars. The cafe, staffed by volunteers has attentive service and the food was good and reasonably priced. Nice gardens even on a cold overcast April day. Worth getting a season ticket and returning at different times of the year !

Beautiful garden with plenty to enjoy in a relatively small area. Excellent cafe, shop & plant sales. Friendly and helpful staff, most of whom seemed to be volunteers.

Very beautiful garden with a lot to see. Just that the entry fee is £7 pp. The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul. – Alfred Austin

An incredibly well designed and beautifully planted relatively small open garden run by the Perennial charity. There are lots of different areas to explore, water features, the white garden, alpine area. Lovely and unusual perennials for sale in the plant shop, gift shop is good too, sell Niwaki products. Cafe has a plenty of outdoor seating on a lovely terrace.

This is a must see garden, so unusual with lots of nooks and crannies, you need to take it slow to get the full benefit. Great cafe, small gift shop and plant sales

Took my nan and it was a lovely experience. The gardens were beautiful with a guide telling the story behind them. Ate at the cafe in the grounds. Friendly and helpful staff topped off with a nice light lunch. Perhaps the menu be broadened, but overall superb

A gem of a place will be returning as didn't give myself long enough to walk round and admire all the plant species nor see the meadow. Gorgeously set out, with a map to follow, cafe for refreshments and plants to buy on the way out!

Very small but beautiful gardens with tea room. Worth a visit.

Beautiful garden with wide variety of plants, featuring cafe, souvenir shop at the entrance and the plant shop. I give 4 starts only because it is quite small and the entrance fee relative to its size seems too high. Nevertheless, the garden undergoes some renovation/changes hence there is a chance that it will be enlarged soon.

We love this place! Cleverly put together little garden with lots of hidden delights. They have just embarked on a big rebuilding project for next season incorporating the property next door, so we will be visiting again in the Spring.

One of my favourite gardens. I love the interlinking rooms. If you get the chance to do a guided tour with a knowledgeable gardener, take it

A nice compact garden with some achievable design ideas combined with some unusual plants. Plenty of details to explore within the multiple "rooms". Well worth a visit and the plants on sale were very good quality.

It has been 4 yrs since we were last here. It was good then but wow, how things have got even better. This gorgeous series of little gardens is just wonderful. A paradise of perennials awash with bees and colour. A new cafe has been built too and there is also the addition of a wildflower meadow with beehives as well as some spectaular succulents. Lovely volunteers staffing the venue & a nice little plant nursery to boot. An absolute gem at this time of year.

Food was nice in the cafe although it was a long wait for it to come out when we were there, it was busy. Nice gardens, maybe a little smaller than I expected. Gift shop seemed a little overpriced. Probably sell more if the prices were more reasonable. Bought a few lovely plants which are doing really well in my garden.

Beautiful garden with different areas to walk around and a bright, spacious cafe serving homemade food.

  • 5/5 Charlotte W. 3 years ago on Google
Lovely gardens, well covid safe organised, more of a morning or afternoon visit thing than a full day trip so bare that in mind. Cafe was nice, went for coffee and cake but the full lunch menu looked great.

Great garden, recently redone. Spacious cafe and a plant sales area. Car parking but I couldn't find the bike parking sadly (5* when they get cycle parking or let me know where it is)

First time I've been since the pandemic started. A huge difference to my last visit. Everywhere looked clean, bright and fresh. We used the cafe and were very impressed by the efforts gone into making it user friendly. The nursery was the same. Staff and volunteers were welcoming and helpful. Definitely going again soon. Need to pre book to visit the garden's.

Super friendly staff and efficient when helping you in the cafe. Try the sausage bap made with locally sourced meat... superb. The garden offers surprises around every corner.... a great way to relax for a couple of hours.

Interesting gardens which can inspire ideas for your own garden. History of the family although sad, their background and theatrical ideas mirror the gardens

I've been visiting York Gate since the days when Sybil used to sit at the gate in her wicker chair and collect money from visitors and it IS my favourite garden so I was thrilled that it's finally re-opened, plus we got a chance to see the new café and plant nursery which, given that the garden surrounding the new addition is still developing, is looking really good. As always the garden itself looked stunning thanks to the dedicated gardeners and it just warmed my heart to be back there. We bought some wonderful plants and can't wait to revisit and sample the café as we went just prior to it opening. Congratulations to all those who've cared for it through lockdown, it looks fantastic.

The gardens were absolutely beautiful, however the attitude of some of the staff I encountered was disappointing, with the exception of the male car park attendant who was really helpful. This was my first visit however sadly I am not sure I will be returning.
