We found this gem through google reviews while looking for a place to eat lunch. We were not disappointed in the least. Let’s start with the warm welcome as we walked in. So nice and friendly. We were sat down and ordered 2 Presidente beers and each a serving of the fish and chips. This is where things get wild. The food is only prepared as it is ordered. No frozen or pre done food. Fresh from ocean to table. I’ve never in my entire life had fish that melted in your mouth like I did here. The crispy batter kept all the flavourful juices inside. The fries were fresh cut and made to order just as the fish was. I couldn’t finish all my food but trust me I ate all my fish. The tartar sauce is also made in house and to die for. I could eat that with anything!! So next time your in the old city centre make sure you stop by for a bite. The owner came as we started our meal to thank us for coming and we spoke more after the meal. What a wonderful man with an amazing story of his life from the United States to moving and opening up his own beach bar restaurant. Truly an inspiration. I promise you will not be disappointed. I’m only sad because I found this place on my last day and I want to try other things from his menu. I will definitely be a regular in my trips here. Thank you so very much Big Lee for everything!! Your new friends from Ontario Tina and Mario ❤️❤️

I heard about Big Lees through a friend from the next city over. It was hands down the best experience by all counts I have had for food since I’ve been here in the DR! The atmosphere is set perfectly with a beachside bar, shaded by the trees surrounding and with gorgeous view of the ocean. I was greeted immediately by one of the friendly servers. To my surprise, Big Lee himself was not only there, but he took the time to introduce himself and his restaurant to me! On to the food. Lee made a personal guarantee that his fish and chips would beat out any that I’ve had beforehand. A very bold claim since I have had fish and chips from many different regions and places. He was right. From the hand cut freshly made home fries, to the secret recipe beer battered sea bass, and not forgetting the homemade tarter sauce, I can honestly say without a doubt this was the BEST fish and chips I’ve ever tasted! I will definitely be stopping back soon. If you are in puerto plata I highly recommend stopping by here. You will love it!

We stopped by today to see what all the fuss was about. I had the burger (great) and my partner had the fish and chips (outstanding!). The fries were fantastic, and everything was large helpings. As we were wrapping up (and I was licking the plate…I think the tartar sauce was homemade?) this guy approaches us and says he is Big Lee. He doesn’t look like a “Big Lee” to me (I thought there was a rule that you need to be well over 300 lbs to be called “big anything”, and this guy is nowhere near that? Maybe 225 lbs). “Big Lee” apologizes, and says he has lost a lot of weight. We than chat for like an hour. Super nice guy, whoever he was. We will definitely be back.

Lee is amazing. For all of you American Tourists. Do yourself a favor and go see Lee. He personally introduced himself to me and we had a great conversation with simply fantastic food and cocktails. Trust me. I've been all over the world and spent some time in the DR. Take the time to go see Lee.

If you are near the Melacon in Puerto Plata you have to stop by Big Lee’s Beach Bar & Grill. The fish and chips was fresh and fabulous. The onion rings where some of the best I’ve ever had. Plus I got to meet Big Lee himself.

This is a fantastic location. Can easily stay the day and enjoy the atmosphere. Lee is a great guy, with the perfect menu for a great experience. His unique Fish and Chip recipe is truly delicious, real deal pub style. The onion rings are also perfected. Big Lee's Beach Bar is a must stop in Puerto Plata. They have just the right amount of beach area, which is far more private than most bars on the beach strip.

This was the best fish and chips I’ve had in years!! It’s juicy on the inside, nice and crunchy on the outside and seasoned to perfection. The prices were very reasonable too (about 1,100 pesos for a large meal, a soft drink and a cocktail). This will be my lunch spot when I go to Costa Rica beach from now on :D

A place that will stay in your memory for ever We went on a NCL Caribbean Cruse before we left I looked up places to eat have a beer and see places I never seen before and we ended up at Big Lees in Puerto Plata What a place I thought at times I lived in heaven on earth But i start to wonder, Beautiful place, great guy wife is cooking, close to the top if not the best fish and chips I ever have had in my life and for all the places the ship took me last week I felt more at home with cool people no place more than there dirt cheap, the next few days we seen the real tourist traps. Owner (Lee)is a laid back great guy a view that most people will never have in there life and enjoy some great food cheap beer and a man and his wife really living the life that's just a dream for most of us Thanks Lee do my best to see you again BOB GATES

We walked here from where our tour dropped us off right down the beach with all the other green shirts. The service was great - even though my Spanish was spotty, they were very helpful and friendly. They have salted caramel crown Royal! The fish and chips were so fresh and crispy. You do have to make sure you sit on the left side (facing the ocean). The right side is literally another restaurant with a completely different menu.

What a fantastic time! Thank you for all previous reviews raving about the fish and chips...sweet Mary! What a delicious meal! It's true the fish melts in your mouth and the fries are perfect. I generally do not care for tartar sauce however, Lee's is so delicious that I not only used it on the fish but, dipped the fries in it as well! I enjoyed "Happy Juice" as beverage of choice with vodka-also delicious!!! Now, add in Lee and his wonderful, welcoming personality and his beautiful, sweet wife and we didn't want to leave!!! Thank you for a wonderful time Lee and Mariela! What a blessing we're in town awhile so we can return again and again!!!!!

Ate delicious and fresh fish and onion rings!!! Big portions. Nice view to the sunset. No toilets or place to wash your hands. A lot of Mosquitos.

It’s good times everytime that I visit Big Lee’s Beach Bar. Great atmosphere and calm vibes, Big Lee is always good for a conversation and the hosts are very welcoming. This is a MUST SEE everytime I am in Puerto Plata, ask for “the table with the view” I believe it’s number 7. The ocean breeze is perfect. I am a returning customer going towards year 4, never had a bad experience I highly recommend giving them a visit! Thanks Big Lee!

We went to Big Lee's Bar & Grill accidentally....but oh what a wonderful mistake it was! The fried seabass sandwich and french fries were delightfully tasteful. Can't wait to return again. I always eat my food too fast before I can take a picture. Here are beautiful views of the area on the malecon. The restaurant is located the malecon in Puerto Plata.

Went to Big Lee’s yesterday and it was the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Big Lee was at the restaurant greeting everyone that came in, which was great. If you’re anywhere near Big Lee’s you have to go and eat. We drove 40 minutes and it was well worth it.

After reading about Big Lee's Bar & Grill on the Internet, we just had to check out the place, and we weren't disappointed. We shared a large order of the fish and chips, which were delish. The tartar sauce tasted amazing. The lettuce and tomato didn't look very appealing and, besides, we're always leery about eating salads in foreign countries. The menu prices were extremely reasonable, considering the beachfront location. We enjoyed chatting with Big Lee during our lunch. What an interesting character! We'll definitely return to his resto to check out his other menu offerings, and perhaps continue our chat.

I gotta admit that I feel so fortunate to have enjoyed Big Lee's fish and chips. The fish tastes fresh and it's battered in a perfectly crisp way which allows you to experience the perfect crunch of the battered shell while also enjoying the delightful moist and mild flavor of the white flaky fish within. The fries are certainly fresh as well, but the real star here is the fish. Well actually the fish alongside the magnificent Oceanside setting. The prices here are a steal and you would be at a loss if your trip to Puerto Plata didn't include a lunch stop at this tasty fish shack.

Big Lee's grill was fantastic. We stopped here while we're staying in Dominican on vacation and I was not disappointed!!! The food was delicious and fresh, the staff and owner were wonderful and very welcoming. Its a beautiful spot right next to the beach so we were able to enjoy a great view with our meal. Definitely recommend it to anyone, you got to stop by and check it out!

On the shimmering shores of Puerto Plata, I stumbled upon an American restaurant that immediately piqued my interest. As I approached, the aroma of sizzling burgers wafted through the salty sea breeze, beckoning me inside. This place exuded authenticity, and I soon learned that the mastermind behind it all was none other than Lee, a Chicago native who ventured to these tropical lands 14 years ago to establish this culinary gem. Sometimes, my cravings steer me toward the comforting embrace of a damn good American cheeseburger, and let me tell you, the ones served here were nothing short of a revelation. With each juicy bite, the perfect balance of flavors danced on my palate, while the crispy fries added a delightful touch of nostalgia to the experience. Nestled right on the beach, the restaurant boasted a view that was truly awe-inspiring. The vast expanse of the ocean stretched before me, its waves serenading my taste buds with a symphony of flavors. The heart and soul of this establishment were embodied by the bartender, chef, and waitress all rolled into one. A charming individual, she happened to be Lee's wife's youngest sister. Her warmth and genuine kindness were infectious, making me feel like part of their extended family. Her dedication to ensuring a memorable dining experience was evident in every detail, from her infectious laughter to her culinary expertise. As I delved deeper into the background of this remarkable eatery, I discovered something that truly touched my heart. Lee's social media presence revealed his commitment to not only serving scrumptious American fare but also to making a difference in the lives of local children. His philanthropic endeavors in the community were heartwarming and inspiring. Posts brimming with photos of friends, family, and patrons generously donating money and school supplies for underprivileged children illuminated the immense impact this restaurant had beyond just its culinary creations. Lee, it seemed, was not only a culinary wizard but also a man with a heart of gold. He was beloved by all – from the locals who had come to cherish his presence over the years, to the wide-eyed tourists who discovered a taste of home in this tropical paradise. In the spirit of unity and genuine compassion, I couldn't help but wholeheartedly support a business like this. With every bite of that mouthwatering cheeseburger, I savored not just the flavors, but the knowledge that I was contributing to a cause much greater than my own culinary indulgence. In the world of food and travel, it's encounters like these that remind me of the profound power restaurants can wield in fostering community and uplifting those in need. Lee and his restaurant had truly touched my heart, and I walked away not just nourished in body but also enriched in spirit.

We enjoyed meeting Big Lee at his bar. He shared his experience with us about living in the Dominican Republic as we ate his delicious foods. His delicious fish and chips and onion rings were out of this world. The fish and chips are crispy on the outside, hot and tender inside! The Potato is fresh cut. It is no surprise why his restaurant is the top-rated restaurant and beach club in Puerto Plata. Thanks for everything Big Lee, hope to see you again soon! Been coming here for years. We stay at a resort but leave the resort just to have the world's greatest fish and chips. Lifelong restaurant manager, and I am not exaggerating. Plus, the owner adds the perfect touch. Employees couldn't be nicer. Big Lee's kills it.

Yesterday, we went for lunch at Big Lee’s in Puerto Plata. We had heard that they did good fish and chips. We are British and we know good fish and chips when we taste them. We were not disappointed. Big Lee’s were the best fish and chips that we have had in a long time. The fish was flaky with a light coating of batter served with a nice portion of golden chips. The staff and Big Lee himself are welcoming and friendly - we chatted with the other diners as if they were old friends. It was a great atmosphere. We don’t eat fish and chips often as we try to stay healthy - they are a treat for us. However, we will definitely go back to Big Lee’s again before we depart Dominican Republic. Ask for Table 7 - it's located on the left side in the corner nearest the beach. Order your food then ask to meet Big Lee. The food is OK, but Big Lee is a great personality with a big heart! His story is fascinating and his work with local poor families is great! Oh, did I mention that table has the best seaside view in Puerto Plata!

It was busy when we arrived and we had to sit by the road but as soon as a table opened up we were moved to the front. Beautiful view. By the way, did I say that was some of the best traditional fish and chips I've had!
