This place is close since lockdown. It will not be open for atleast next 3 months. But as no information is added online, people still goes there and waste time in traveling. Do not visit until you surely know about its opening.

The Pataleshwar Cave Temple (also called Panchaleshvara or Bamburde) is a rock-cut cave temple, carved out in the 8th century in the Rashtrakuta period by Kannadiga kings. It is located in what is now Pune, in the state of Maharashtra, India. It was originally situated outside the town, but the city limits have expanded so that it is now located on the downtown Jangali Maharaj Road. It has been declared as a protected monument by the government.

Good place for the one who likes Zoological park. I was visited here in Month of December was having a very good experience, found different species of animals, birds, I even saw the tiger, white tiger. And the best thing is having lake view one of the best place I have ever visited. It is having a large area nearly about 130 acres we are really exhausted by walking. Authorities should start e rickshaw for travelling inside the park. Overall good experience.

A nice place to sit and enjoy peaceful time. You can bring your gang here, eat or even sleep under the huge tree. The cave has a temple. You can sit inside the cave also. But they would not allow to sit for a long time inside the cave as it might get crowded.

This is a 8th century rock-cut Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is a notable circular Nandi mandapa and a large pillared mandapa. It is a temple of three rock-cut cave sanctums, likely dedicated to Brahma-Shiva-Vishnu originally. Many visitors don't visit this place, but it has to be on your list. Entry to this monument is tricky, and you have to follow the sign board. Parking is a problem here, since it is situated near the main road. On Weekends it’s is crowded. The caves has peaceful and calm atmosphere.

Very well maintained zoological park. You can see Tiger Lions Bulls various types of snakes. Also cute pandas. Very peaceful place in pune. Every were is greener. Not so much people. You can enjoy the beauty of nature in middle of pune. The staff is cooperative and helpful. The whole place very clean. The lions and tigers are hard to find as they were always sleeping in trees. There is also a white tiger but not visible easily. There are also a cheetah sleeping on the top of tree. There are variety of snakes in zoo. There are also a giant crocodile in a zoo. Also cobras and other snakes. You always here the beautiful sound of birds every ware in the zoo. It is one of the best picnic spot in pune. School picnic are so common here. The mobile phone and cameras are allowed here to take selfie and capture the animals. The ticket price is very minimal. There are not big restaurants out side the zoo. Small vendor are there for some snack. Very beautiful place. Every one should visit here. There are also lots of deer and two big elephants.

The Pataleshwar Caves dates back to the 8th century. According to folklore, the temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile and miraculously in just a few hours when they needed shelter. While another theory suggests that its makers saw a faulty line and was abandoned while the temple was still being carved. Thus, giving it an unfinished vibe. But all of these still remain a mystery and there are many caves yet to be dug up. The place is being maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is a representation of the city’s heritage. For anyone who gets hypnotised by the structure and ancient architecture, this place will knock your socks off. Astonishingly, the cave has been carved out of single basalt rock and you can find fine craftsmanship and delicate carving on all of these structures. If you look closely and have an eye of an expert, you can easily notice the similarities between the architecture of Pataleshwar Temple and Elephanta caves.

There are caves that you fear to enter but not all of them are scary! Some of them look like a fantasy and bear the light within. Pataleshwar Cave Temple in Pune contains the treasure that not many of us are lucky finding. Right in the heart of the city! Yup, this protected heritage site, carved out of a single rock, is a magnificent monolithic creation located in Pune...

There are different types of snake are available in the park . You will need at least 3-4 hours to enjoy everything available in the park. The journey of watching the zoo end at the elephant point. When you go there you will feel like you are in forest. You can experience forest life there. Different kind of birds are also there . Tiger as well as lion 🦁 is also present there. Whatever you can think of about forest that you will find there. Of course you will feel calm there.

In complete awe and amazement after gazing an 8th century magnificent monolithic marvel, which had been present all this while in the busiest and ever crowded streets of Pune. Pataleshwar Caves are said to be built during the Rashtrakuta Period. The caves have been cut out from a monolithic basalt rock. The cave has a temple complex dedicated to Shiv Ji and a circular ‘Mandapa’ for Nandi Ji. Although there are 3 sanctums in the temple which are said to be of Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh each, the 2 sanctums had their statues lost during the course of their history and later were said to be reclaimed in the 19th century. Presently Shivling is in the central sanctum and the rest of the 2 sanctums are now also dedicated to Parvati Ji and Ganesh Ji. Pataleshwar Caves entrance gate is a ‘blink & miss’ on the right side of the JM Road while on a vehicle. Since JM Road is a one way road, look at your right for Sadguru Jangali Maharaja Samadhi Mandir. Just next to the Mandir you’ll find the Pataleshwar caves entrance gate. Enter the gate and you’ll find a tall good old charm - a Bargad Tree 🌳 - welcoming you with numerous dangling roots and branches. Pataleshwar Caves are the oldest (8th Century) man-made structures in Pune. And we have always overlooked its history, its importance and its grandness. Do visit with friends and family to understand why it has been designated as a monument of National Importance by the ASI. Do not miss ! Entry is free for all !

Situated right in the middle of Pune's urban core, is this small temple that was supposedly constructed underground by the Pandavas. Nothing extraordinary, but it's a fun spot in the centre of the city to hang out for an hour and take some nice pictures. It is not much crowded. The main deity is Lord Shiva Pataleshwar.

The Pataleshwar Caves, also referred to as the Panchaleshvara temple or Bhamburde Pandav cave temple, are a 8th century rock-cut Hindu temple from the Rashtrakuta period located in Pune, Maharashtra, India. Dedicated to Shiva, it was a monumental monolithic excavation with a notable circular Nandi mandapa and a large pillared mandapa. It is a temple of three rock-cut cave sanctums, likely dedicated to Brahma-Shiva-Vishnu originally, but currently to Parvati-original Shiva-Ganesha. A garden now surrounds the site, new idols have been placed elsewhere in the complex. The interior of the caves have suffered damage from vandalism. Outside, the monument shows the effects of natural elements over the centuries.

An ancient wonder amidst the busy city, that makes for a hangout spot for upcoming generation. The carvings and structure are very beautiful, especially the inside of the mandir where they do not allow to record/capture. The place is an epitome of indistinctive skills of the sculptor and their imagination🙏🏼. Also the chafa trees add to the beauty of the place.

This place is one of the Pune's heritage spots which is also known as Panchaleshvara Caves. Never thought in heart of the city I can see such a beautiful cave temple. A cave within a city is something you must visit! Being it a tourist attractions the place is well maintained and you will enjoy the stillness yet lively atmosphere of the cave. The grand baniyan tree at the entrance is a remarkable beauty. The temple is almost 1300-year-old. It was excavated and further built during the reign of the Rashtrakutas. This is now a government protected heritage site and being maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. This entire cave temple of Pataleshwara is carved out of single basalt rock. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple has a shrine of Lord Shiva and a beautiful idol of Nandi too. Other than this, there are also statues of various other Hindu deities such as Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman. Nearest place to visit: Shree Jangali Maharaj Temple, Chaturshrungi Temple, Laxmi Road, Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, etc.

It's a good peaceful place, but really small, nothing much other than the small temple inside the cave. But still should visit once, don't plan the whole day around it, you would be done in like 10,15 minutes, unless you want to have some personal time in the park outside

As the name suggest, this temple is carved out if stones, and the best part about this temple is that it's been preserved as it is. Nothing much done in modern times, so you will see the same structures as it was done when it was made. You will feel like you have entered a cave, or you are below the earth's surface and that is what the name suggests in Hindi. Nothing much to do here though, but if you like to visit historical monuments, then this temple is a great fit for you if you are in Pune.

    (Translated by Google) Mountain caves, Baner caves, Chaturshrungi and of course, Pataleshwar temple on Jangali Maharaj Road! If we go to see the history of Pune city, many dynasties have sprung up here. The Rashtrakuta dynasty ruled over the Pune area in the 8th century AD and around the same time near Bhamburda village (present day Shivajinagar, formerly known as Bhambwade, renamed by the British as Bhamburde and later renamed as Shivajinagar by Acharya Atre) As this temple is about 1.2 meters below the ground, it may have been named Pataleshwar. Even if the Pune City Heritage Committee has included it in the list of historical and cultural heritage, given the current dilapidated condition of this temple, there is no need for a different pundit to say that this heritage will also be destroyed in a few years if not addressed in time. Steps have been made to break through the rocks to reach this cave. After descending, the Nandi Mandap in the forecourt comes in front of us. The pavilion is built on a 4 meter high and 12 thick pillars with a circular roof. Nandi is large in size and has a snake carved around its neck. There is also a necklace around the neck. In the courtyard, on the left corner, there is an ossuary construction and in front of it, there is a water tank. The cave has a total structure of two pillars, one room at the front and one at the back. An excavated sculpture can be seen near the door of this aisle, of course, if you look very closely, you can guess something. Renowned cave scholar James Ferguson's scholarly comments on the caves suggest that they may have been built in the eighth century (during the reign of the Rashtrakuta king). The main caves of Pataleshwar are worth seeing. As you ascend the steps of the main cave, you can see a fading inscription on the top right hand side. Although this article is in Devanagari, it cannot be read in its entirety. The letters 'Shri Ganeshayanam' in the first line can be read as much. The rest of the letters have been obscured by years of wear and tear. After climbing these steps, there are three sanctum sanctorums carved. In the middle of this, Bholenath is sitting. It was very beautiful to see the Shivling! At the entrance of the three temples, there are gatekeepers with mattresses. However, their details are not available. On the right is an idol of a later goddess and on the left is a statue of Ganesha. There is a rough stone path to walk around these three caves. At the back right are half-dug overs. Some of the walls have leaf motifs. Remaining idols of Shiva and Vishnu are carved on the wall between the two pillars to the north in the first hall of the main mandapa. Some human figures are carved on the remains. However, all these sculptures are in bad condition or they should be incomplete. According to some scholars, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh may have been installed in these three temples to give it the appearance of a temple. Therefore, even if only Shiva-Parvati and Ganesha are present today, there is no denying the existence of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh in the past. In the past, the place was outside the village, but later the village expanded to the very center of the village. Nowadays it is used only as a place to go for a walk. This place can make a significant contribution to the tourism development of Pune city if the mentality is changed a little and the remains are preserved.

The Pataleshwar Cave Temple (also called Panchaleshvara or Bamburde) provides a glimpse of rock cut architecture, carved out in the 8th century Rashtrakuta period.. It's situated in the middle of the city.. Easily accessible.. Properly maintained.. Is also a site of national importance..maintain the decorum to preserve our most valued heritage.. Even in this scorching heat it gives a sense of calm with the greenery alongside. .. Appreciate the beautiful structure.. It's carvings.. Incredible India 🇮🇳

Situated in the city centre, the Pataleshwar Cave Temple is an ancient place of worship dedicated to an avatar of Lord Shiva - the Lord of the Underworld, ‘Pataleshwar’. This temple was carved out of a single rock. There is a shrine of Lord Shiva and his ride, Nandi the Bull within. Besides this, there are high arches, and engraved pillars, miniature inscriptions, mandapas, detailed craftsmanship and more that would leave you amazed.

This place is located in the middle of the busiest place in Pune. It has very old trees and is a protected monument as per ASI. There are guards and ASI office located at its entrance and is very well maintained. It is clean and the temple can be accessed during day time only. The caves have been carved out of stone and give a good view of the entire complex. The place used to be visited by a local saint named Junglee Maharaj and there is a temple dedicated to him just adjacent to this cave temple.

An 8th century rock cut Hindu temple from the rashtrakuta period. Sadly many of the inner idols have been vandalised by invaders. As known as the Panchaleshvara cave", "Bhamburde caves of Pune", "Pandoo caves", or "Panchaleshvara temple"; north of Pune, this site is now a part of Shivajinagar (Pune), surrounded by modern societies & structures. Open as of February 2022 post the COVID pandemic 2nd wave and doing puja inside the sanctum is allowed. Place is cleaned often and they don't allow pics in the inner temple area, also monitored by CCTV.

1hr time to visit whole place which is cave temple of lord shiva. Located in centre of city but takes you to the calm and serene world of enlightenment. Not much crowded place apart when Pune Darshan buses comes and next to the JM maharaja temple which can be visited together. It is on one way road and not much parking space is there so watch on your right for vacant spot. Could be made better by authorities by providing more services. It’s a great places to visit but lacks publicity. Must go places when you roam in pune

This ancient legendary place is located bang on JM Road, next to Jangali Maharaj Ashram. The Cave Temple is carved out of single rock. The entry through a small rock cut channel opens up to the sight of round Mandap carved out of rock with superfine detailing of pillars. The main cave hosts the Shiva Ling and few more deities. The internal architecture is a masterpiece of carving. We can see few unfinished idols on both side of the main cave. Sure to visit for witnessing architectural marvel within the city of Pune.

An 8th century rock cut cave temple located in the heart of a bustling city. It is heartbreaking to know that ALL of the sculptures and possible inscriptions are lost at this place. Surprisingly, even now most people living in Pune don't know about the existence of this historically important place in the city. The entry mostly had a few couples and college students hanging around. But yes, there were a few tourists coming and going... It was a really beautiful and peaceful city right there!

This cave is a bit difficult to spot although the Google maps location is correct. This is because it is surrounded by other buildings and from outside it does not looks like a cave. The cave is small, there are some carvings of god's (maybe Hindu gods) but they don't beg for donation like other temples. The cave itself is small. It is not a must visit but if you stay in Pune then it can be visited. The time spent can be 1 hour or less.

Not easy to find on google map. But once you find it you will be surprised as well as awestruck. Surprised - to find such a monument in this part of the city. Awestruck - looking at the how magnificently this monument has been built and maintained. So fortunate to have seen this. Best time to visit is in the mornings. Parking would be bit of an issue. What is amazing to see is that this temple is not atall crowded, mainly because people have forgotten its existence. Would definitely recommend to visit this place.

The Pataleshwar Cave Temple (also called Panchaleshvara or Bamburde) is a rock-cut cave temple, carved out in the 8th century in the Rashtrakuta period by Kannadiga kings.[1] It is located in what is now Pune, in the state of Maharashtra, India. It was originally situated outside the town, but the city limits have expanded so that it is now located on the downtown Jangali Maharaj Road. It has been declared as a protected monument by the government.

Vetal hill is called as Lungs of western Pune. This is one of best place to be with nature in heart of city. Anyone will not realise that it's in heart of city. It has a wide spread from Paud road to chaturshrungi one side, other side towards Pashan road , bhusari colony, really a wide spread. For exercise purpose it has nice and different terrain like gradual climb from MIT side, Intermediate from Kanchan Lane, steep from Quarry side to Vetal and long nice flat surface for walk. So advisible even for senior citizen. Even one can take 2/4 wheelers up there, wheelchair friendly parking and may be little ahead. Street dogs and Pet Dogs can be problem many times, not only small children are scared and turn into small fall as they run being scared of dogs, but also if per dogs not chained (many times) they are dangerous for Peacocks and almost finished deers and rabbits from this area. Government is planning lots of roads in this area, but wise Pune citizens are against it. And hope area remains same for next generations.

Pataleshwar Cave Temple is devoted to the Lord Pataleshwar, the God of the Underworld. Built in the 8th century, this temple is visited not by religious tourists but by everyone who admires architectural beauty. Amidst the busyness of Jangli Maharaj Road, this temple with its calm atmosphere, offers visitors a much needed respite. It is said that the Pataleshwar Cave Temple has been carved out from a single rock. It is also dedicated to the Lord Shiva and Nandi. There are also statues of various Hindu Gods and Goddesses such as Goddess Sita, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ram, Lord Lakshman, and Lord Ganesh. A majestic shivalingam is also built under its roof, at the main shrine of the temple. This temple has huge pillars, adding on to its magnificence. The construction of this temple, which was inspired by the Elephanta caves, was left uncompleted. Owing to this, there is no marked entrance to Pataleshwar Cave Temple. One of the way to enter it via an open area next to a majestic banyan tree. A more known temple, Jangli Maharaj Mandir, which has the samadhi of Jangli maharaj, a follower of Swami Samarth, is located close by. There is also way inside the JM temple complex to reach this cave temple.

  • 4/5 Pravin G. 2 years ago on Google
Impressive! If you're a history lover or bear interest in ancient rock architecture, then do visit this place. I would not say the place has the finest rock inscriptions, but what impressed me is the way the gigantic rocks have been cut to form the caves. Imagine how intelligent the ancient technology would have been. Don't forget, the cave is believed to be some 1300 years old! The cave has a Lord Shiva statue in the form of Shiva Lingum and the monolithic statue of Lord Nandhi. The atmosphere inside the cave is very serene and calm. The place need better maintainance from Archeological department.

  • 5/5 Arpit R. 2 years ago on Google
Nice place to visit. The temple is situated below ground level that is the reason why it is called Pataleshwar. It has main deity as Shiva which is well organised. Also it has idol of Devi and Hanuman. It questions how people have made such marvelous structures at older times with such precision. The columns, rooms and wall are so well carved. Front mandap has Nandi as well. It would have been better if there would be some more information about the history of it along with some basic facilities in the campus like drinking water and toilets. Nearby Jangali Maharaj temple has all such basic facilities and we'll maintained.

Nice place located on Jangli Maharaj road. Popularity of this place is Lord Shivaling and the cave that is created in complete stone. There is big trees in front of cave so we can do relax in the shadow for some time. There is a water storage in front of cave developed in base stone.

The Pataleshwar Caves, also referred to as the Panchaleshvara temple or Bhamburde Pandav cave temple, are an 8th century rock-cut Hindu temple from the Rashtrakuta period located in Pune, Maharashtra, India.

The inner temple was way more interesting than we expected. Exact feel of some positive aura around us. No harm was caused to the ancient stones which i found a good thing about the place. Must visit.

  • 5/5 Saurabh Y. 1 year ago on Google
Awesome Mahadev Temple and Cave... The Pataleshwar caves are a monolithic excavation of a rocky hillock that gently swells and forms the terrain here. Its entrance is about a 20 feet long path from the east of the complex. It was originally an excavated tunnel but one that collapsed. It was, for a period, restored with a masonry. The path leads into an open court that is nearly a square (95 feet at its maximum in north-south, by 90 feet across east-west). Avoid weekend...

Cave area is good . The whole place can be covered within half an hour. The center peace is not well maintained and is deteriorating day by day. No lightings inside the cave, feels mostly dark.
