This giant fort stands the city at height of about 1300 feet above ground level. It was built before 1113 AD. by founder ruler of the city, Ajaypal of Chauhan dynasty. Prithviraj Chauhan was the Last Hindu Ruler of the fort. After his defeat, Kutub ud-din Aibak belonging to army of Mohammad Gauri occupied this fort. Previously, Taragarh fort was accessible by a steep trekking path through inder kot. Now, it is approachable by serpentine motorable road. Entire fort area is guarded by rampar... READ MORE

Taragarh Fort is a hill fort atop Taragarh Hill. The fort dates back to the 12th century, but now is mostly in ruins though and active area with houses (actually it’s more like a village). The popularity of the fort is probably down to the two shrines on the hill. One is Roza-e-Imam Hussain, which is a replication of the shrine in Karbala. The other is the Dargah Hazrat Meeran Syed Hussain, which is a shrine to Meeran Syed Hussain, a former commander of the fort who died defending the fort from Rajputs. Other than the aforementioned Islamic shrines, the main things to see in the fort complex are the gates. Bhim Burj is giant gate and still in good condition, the others are in ruins. The fort is a long way from the centre of Ajmer and the only realistic way to get there is to use some kind of transport, unless you’re up for a physical challenge. Walking would likely take an hour to climb.

The shrine at Taragarh is the second most important Dargah in Ajmer, and is dedicated to Syed Meeran Husaain. Hussain was the Governor of the fortress of Taragarh and was killed by the Rajput in 1202AD. The tomb of Hussain did not become a sacred site immediately. It attained sanctity only after roughly three centuries when Akbar visited the tomb during one of his visits to the shrine of Moinuddin Chisty in Ajmer. Since then, the shrine started to attract pilgrims, although it is only some twenty years back that the road was greatly improved which facilitated pilgrimage to the top of this high hill. Another transformation started to take place post the improving of this road to Taragarh. From a Sufi shrine, the Meeran Hussain Dargah has turned into a Shia Dargah. The shrine is now adorned with glistening golden pillars closely replicating the pillars at Karbala. Not only that, a Roza of Imam Hussain is created a few metres away which also replicates the famous monument at Karbala. This second transformation raises a number of important questions – what is the identity of this Dargah, a sufi place where qawwalis are celebrated, or a Shia monument where music is haram? How does this Dargah relate to the Ajmer Sharif which sees itself as a Sunni-Sufi Dargah? What about the relationship between the Shias on Taragarh hill and those in Ajmer city? Are there also external influences, particularly from Iran, which play a role in this transformation? These are some of the questions among others that we explore currently.

This dargah is also known as dargah of Taragah. The story about this fort and dargah which was described by our khadim is as follows Tara garh fort is a fort located on the highest hill of ajmer near about 700 to 1000 feet from ground,At the time of ruler Rai Pithura ,this fort was strongest fort in Rajasthan and considered as not to be conquered by anyone but Sultan shahbuddin Gauri conquered this fort and appoint Hazarat Meera Syed Hussain as a commander. After death of Qutabudin Abik ,the rajput ruler attacked on fort in the night and entered into the fort but Hazart meeran fought bravely and the enemies fled before the break of the day.Meeran Hussain (R.A.)was also martyred in the attack ,khawaja Garib Nawaz himself visited taragarh fort to attend the Namaz e Janaza Hazrat Meeran Husain (R.A.) was a great abstemious saint. He mostly used to be at the service of Gharib Nawaz (R.A.) as a staunch follower. His Urus falls on 17th and 18th Rajab every year.

The Taragarh Fort, Ajmer was built in 1354 A.D. The Taragarh Fort, Rajasthan is a spectacular and outstanding example of Rajasthani architecture. During the Mughal rule in Ajmer, the Taragarh Fort, Ajmer was used as an important center of military activity. After this in the later years, during the British occupation in Ajmer, the fort was used as a sanatorium. The Taragarh Fort in Ajmer has six huge gates. The Miran Saheb ki Dargha is located inside the fort. Miran Saheb, a brave warrior and also the governor of the fort sacrificed his life defending and protecting Taragarh against an enemy invasion. The Taragarh Fort, Ajmer provides the visitors with an excellent and panoramic view of the city. Something to look out for is the Bhim Burj, a huge battlement on which there rests a large canon and also the massive stone water reservoirs built within the Fort. The main and front gateway that leads the visitors to the fort is decorated and embellished with stone sculptures of elephants.

It is a famous tourist spot and remains a stunning example of the impressive Rajasthani architecture. The Taragarh Fort was used as a crucial military center during the rule of Mughals in India.

Buland Darwaza Ajmer Sharif Sultan Ghiyasuddin Khilji (1469-1500) himself was a devotee of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin and it was almost certainly he who funded the construction of the Buland Darwaza, one of the ceremonial gates of the dargah, and so-called because of its great height. The Buland Darwaza is sometimes attributed to Sultan Alauddin Khilji, some refer today to it as the ‘Ala I Darwaza ‘ but this is unlikely, and is no doubt the result of a confusion between the Khiljis of Malwa and Mandu, and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi (1298-1316). Before the commencement of Urs Sharif a flag is hoisted on top of this gate with grand ceremony on the 25th Jamadiulsaani for ushering the ‘Urs’ of Khwaja Saheb, which starts from 1st of Rajab(The 7th month of lunar Calendar). The Buland Darwaza, can, therefore, more acceptably be attributed to Ghiyas al-din Khilji. It was not only Akbar and the Khilji Sultans who adorned Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty ‘s tomb. By the early seventeenth century the dargah was clearly an impressive establishment with a considerable staff financed by the endowments and offerings of devotees. There was already accommodation for the staff, facilities for the pilgrims’ ritual ablutions, a monumental gateway (the Buland Darwaza), at the entrance of the shrine, and a lavishly decorated mausoleum for the saint.

There are three gateways to the fort known as Lakshmi Pol, Phuta Darwaza, and Gagudi ki Phatak. There were 14 bastions in the wall of this fort. Most parts of these gateways are now in ruins. The largest of its battlements is the 16th-century bastion known as the Bhim Burj, on which was once mounted a large cannon called Garbh Gunjam, or 'Thunder from the Womb'. In the fort are water reservoirs. The fort also holds a shrine dedicated to Miran Saheb ki Dargah, who lost his life in 1202 CE during a Rajput attack. He was killed by Rajput bravehearts. As per Tarikhi Daudi, there was no Dargah when Sher Shah visited the fort in 1544 CE and this place has no importance. It was later made up as Dargah

Going to the fort I recommend going by a shared omini that's available anywhere throughout Ajmer especially near the dargah, reaching to the top is the only good part, there isn't much to see, the fort is in a really bad shape and barely looked after, there isn't much to see ofbthe fort, the view may be better after rains and cloud's but I personally didn't enjoy it as such. The way back to the dargah by foot was hectic and the path is full of sketchy shops selling weird con stuff. Wouldn't recommend it.

Built atop a steep hillside, Taragarh Fort in Ajmer is one of Rajasthan’s oldest forts. Constructed in 1354, Tarahgarh Fort is the handiwork of the Chauhan dynasty of north-western India. Much of this fort is ruins however it still provides an interesting glimpse into the history of the state.
