Vembanad (Vembanad Kayal or Vembanad Kol) is the longest lake in India, and the largest lake in the state of Kerala. With an area of 2033 square kilometers, it is the second largest Ramsar site in India only after the Sunderbans in West Bengal. Spanning several districts in the state of Kerala, it is known as Vembanadu Lake in Kottayam, Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha and Kochi Lake in Kochi. Several groups of small islands including Vypin, Mulavukad, Vallarpadam, Willingdon Island are located in the Kochi Lake portion. Kochi Port is built around the Willingdon Island and the Vallarpadam island.

A part of the large Vembanad lake, this lake has a different view with long stretches ideal for boat rides. A picture of Kerala beauty with the palm fringed shores along the lake is a great scene from the shore as well as from a boat ride. It also has the largest surface water ecosystem. One can savour specialities of Lobsters, prawns and fresh water fishes , specially the pearl spot baked in banana leaf. Duck roast is also a speciality as duck farming is seen on this lake stretch. The famous Nehru Boat race is conducted on a part of this lake and brings in a lot of tourist during the Onam festival. Punnamada lake is an extension of Vembanad lake. Famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race is conducted here on second Saturday of August every year (just before Onam). The places round the lake will be crowded during the race. There are many resorts all around the lake. The main entertainment here is the boat ride. The lake consists of a lot of houseboat facilities with varied budget. You can hire a house boat or a Shikara (small boats- around 2400/per boat for 3 hours irrespective to number of persons) or travel in a government ferry (Rs 50 for one point to another) for moving around the lake. Houseboats usually starts at 13:00 hrs and checkout time next day is usually morning 10:00 hrs. Houseboats are equipped with all the comforts of a good hotel room including furnished bedrooms, toilets, living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony. You can taste authentic Kerala food with “Karimeen” fish fry in the boat. The crowd will be more on weekends and holidays. Alappuzha beach, bus stand and railway station are very close to Punnamada Lake.

Punnamada lake was fun and is generally covered in houseboat in Alleppey. It was a fun ride the whole stay in houseboat. the biggest lake in kerala, a ride though punnamada is so relaxing and fun. you can do many activities here. the main entertainment is the boat ride. house boats are the main attractions but you can find shikar boat too for 1 hr or 2 hour rides. many resorts nearby the lake and most of them have lake views. sunset is very beautiful here. you will definitely enjoy here.

The lake is stunning. Every traveller should visit once in their life the prestigious 'Vallamkali' in Punnamada lake. You can travel in 'cheruvallam', speed boat, houseboat and in several other rides in Punnamada lake. The distance between the lake and to the sea is not actually that far. If you are visiting Kerala, you must visit the backwaters of it.

Rainy season is better to visit here to explore the beauty of the lake. Favourite place of foreigners to see the lake and enjoy the ride in house boat. The greenery of paddy field in both sides of the lake makes boating more loveable.

Best place to enjoy backwaters of Kerala, if you are travelling in group or with family. I will highly recommend you to try renting houseboats for at least one night. Punnamada Kayal is the lifeline of Alleppey. It opens up a serene world of emerald green canals past scenic islands, lush paddy fields and coconut groves, Chinese fishing nets, and a clear sapphire sky reflected in the still waters. Cruise the backwaters in a canoe and enjoy the languid pace of country life on this narrow strip between the Arabian Sea and Punnamada Lake. Drift past fishermen hamlets and you will see toddy tappers going through their daily routine, beautifully bronzed men on their way to the paddy field, and fishermen wading into the water to make their catch. There are some man made islands too that you can access on a backwater cruise, situated below sea level. R Block, one of the strips in Alleppey backwater cruise, is particularly famous for the fresh toddy served to travelers.

From this place we took our houseboat to explore the backwaters of Kerala. Also the next day we were dropped here to travel back to Kochi. Most of the houseboat starts and ends their journey from Punnamada only. Nice place, good people, good food and truly incredible Kerala (God's Own Country)
