Sasthamcotla lake is the largest freshwater lake in Kerala. The lake which derives its name from a Sastha templetemple near the lake, is the largest source of drinking water for the people living in the town of Kollam. The reason for it being a freshwater source is the presence of larva chaoborus in the water. It is known for eating the bacteria from the water and making it fit for drinking. This lake is one of the Kollam places to visit.

It was really calm and quiet. The unpaved walking trail is a little bit slippery and muddy, but who cares! The nature will show its simplified enticing face in the evening. There's a private boat service and a temple.

Sasthamkotta Lake is the largest of its kind in Kerala and said to have derived its name from an ancient Sastha Temple located near the lake. It is surrounded by hills on the 3 sides and is the largest source of drinking water for the residents of Kollam. The reason for it being a freshwater source is the presence of larva chaoborus in the water which is responsible of consuming bacteria from the lake water and makes its healthy and fit for drinking. The lake is home for 27 species of freshwater fish. You can do boating and swimming in this lake. Timings: 24-hrs, preferred 10 am – 6 pm

Kerala’s largest fresh water lake. Very close to Sasthamcotta Sree Dharma Sastha Temple and Kumbalathu Sankupillai Memorial Devaswom Board College. There is almost no facilities available here. You could enjoy the nature as it is without much disturbances.

Sasthamcotta Lake or Sasthamkotta Lake, also categorized as a wetland, is the largest fresh water lake in Kerala, a state of India on the south of the West Coast. The lake is named after the ancient Sastha temple (a pilgrimage centre) located on its bank. It meets the drinking water needs of half million people of the Quilon district and also provides fishing resources. The purity of the lake water for drinking use is attributed to the presence of large population of larva called cavaborus that consumes bacteria in the lake water.[2] The lake is a designated wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention since November 2002. [3]

Sasthamkotta Lake is a picturesque freshwater lake located in the Kollam district of Kerala, India. This lake is considered to be one of the largest freshwater lakes in the state and is a major source of drinking water for the local population. The lake is surrounded by lush green hills, which add to its natural beauty and serenity. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the lake, take a boat ride or simply sit and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. There is also a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located on the banks of the lake, which is a popular destination for pilgrims. The lake is well-maintained, and the authorities have made sure to keep its ecosystem intact. Visitors can enjoy a variety of local cuisine at the food stalls around the lake and take home some souvenirs from the local shops. Overall, a visit to Sasthamkotta Lake is a must for anyone visiting the Kollam district and for those who appreciate natural beauty and serene surroundings.

Sasthamcotta Lake is the largest fresh water lake in Kerala. People living around it depend on it for drinking water. In a sense, we can describe it as one of the wonders of the world. There is a belief that the mud in this lake has a very high magnetic power and it will absorb any waste. Sasthamcotta Lake is another sight to behold

    Amazing Place... Greenary.. Boating

  • 5/5 Roshan J. 4 years ago on Google
Is the one and only freshwater lake in Kerala. The government really protects it by banning the use of motor boat in the lake as it provides drinking water for the whole Kollam district. It is such a beautiful destination where we can enjoy sightseeing, boating, fishing etc..So many people visit this place for wedding photo shoot everyday.! The place is more quiet and peaceful as it is not an over crowded place. I have brought my friends from Idukki and they enjoyed the destination a lot..! Even i also visit this place often when i feel sad or disturbed. Taking a walk through the bank of the lake makes us more happy and peaceful.
