The building is full of mosaics on the walls and ceilings, that make it extraordinary of you think the work that has to be done to achieve this! In terms of art, I liked it. Also the surrounding nature is beautiful. However, it is a touristic site with gift shops and taverns around the church.

Having stayed for a few days in the city of Veria or Veroia as the Greeks say, we decided today, for Christmas, to visit Panagia Soumela, which has a miracle-working icon of the Mother of God The road is not very difficult and can be reached in about 30 minutes from Veria. Here a fairly large plateau opens, with parking spaces, shops with church items, food stalls, terraces, some of which are closed - it's still winter. The icon has a turbulent history, being originally in a church with the same name, Panagia Soumela, on the territory of today's Turkey. The icon was recovered by the Greeks in 1931 and initially brought to Athena. The current church was built on a similar place in the Macedonian Mountains, Kastania in Vermio. The icon of Our Lady Panagia Soumela was brought to this church in 1952. About 40 years later, in August 1993, the Holy Cross and the Gospel of Saint Christopher, also recovered from the original church on the territory of Turkey today, were brought from the Byzantine Museum in Athens. The Panagia Sumela icon is a symbol of the Greeks of Asia Minor, who asked for the intercession of the Mother of God in times of oppression and suffering.

Wonderful place. Beautiful church. Shame about the restaurant we went next to the church. They have no respect for the tourists and visitors the food was cold and we waited an hour to be served by rude staff

A beautiful church and monastery up in the mountains. The view is breathtaking The drive is quite easy. There are little shops across from church and tavernas. Highly recommended.

Due to extreme fog, we were unable to see the surrounding area. Besides that, it was raining all the two days we stayed there. We were told that there is often fog at this area. The monastery is built at the slopes of Vermion Mount.

Beautiful place spiritual and historic, I arrived here with my group and enjoyed my time here. There is plenty of parking and several restaurants cafes and mini markets.
