The
Chafariz
da
Junqueira
located
in
a
recess
on
Rua
da
Junqueira
opposite
Cordoaria
Nacional
is
also
known
as
Chafariz
da
Cordoaria.
Built
in
1821
according
to
the
design
of
the
architect
Honorato
Correia
de
Macedo
e
Sá,
its
first
water
flowed
in
1822.
Initially
fed
by
a
water
mine
located
at
the
top
of
Santo
Amaro,
it
felt
the
need
in
1838
to
be
served
by
a
new
flow
in
the
vicinity
of
the
Dry
river.
It
is
a
high-backed
fountain
with
a
robust
appearance
integrated
into
an
surrounding
urban
arrangement,
designed
by
the
architect
Raul
Lino,
who
articulates
the
centrality
of
the
fountain
with
curved
wall
panels
decorated
with
ashlar
tiles,
with
stone
benches
attached.
The
main
body
of
the
fountain
in
limestone
features
two
superimposed
frames
in
the
center,
framed
by
two
pilasters,
with
the
inscription
"Agoas
Livres
/
year
1831"
on
the
upper
frame.
To
top
off
this
set
there
is
an
elaborate
pediment,
delimited
by
an
interesting
game
of
heavy
athletes
and
volutes
that
bear
the
coat
of
arms
of
Portugal
at
the
central
top
and
the
National
shield
on
a
crowned
armillary
sphere.
In
conjunction
with
the
water
chest,
there
is
a
cut-out
tank
that
receives
water
from
two
spouts.
