(Translated by Google) The Temple of Kalasasaya or Temple of the Standing Stones, is located in Tiwanaku, Bolivia, where the changes of seasons and the 365-day solar year were verified with accuracy. At the equinoxes (autumn: March 21 and spring: September 21) the Sun rose through the center of the main entrance door, which is accessed by a magnificent staircase.

An interesting historical site in a fantastic landscape in the Bolivian Andes. Great museum too. Try the local Llama meat.

Tiwanaku is quite an impressive spot, but really needs someone professional to show you around, local guides won't do...hire an archaeologist guide if you want to be impressed beyond your expectations... Ruins not too well maintained but OK....

The Kalasasaya Temple (kala: stone and saya or sayasta: standing) or Temple of the Standing Stones,[1] is a temple located in Tiwanaku, western Bolivia. In it, the changes of seasons and the solar year of 365 days were verified with accuracy. On the equinoxes (autumn: March 21 and spring: September 21) the Sun was born in the center of the main entrance door, which is accessed by a magnificent staircase. On the winter solstice (June 21) the Sun rose in the northeast corner. The summer solstice (December 21) was marked by the birth of the Sun in the southeast corner. This wall is known as the "balcony wall".

It is a beautiful temple and I enjoyed my visit throroughly. The related museums are a must see too. Especially if you are an Erik von Daniken fan or Graham Hancock fan. But even if you are not, the place has a mystical vibe to it as if you are seeing something that means a lot to humanity. The entire Tiwanaku site is only 2% excavated yet, so hopefully we will see what else is dug up in the near future. You can just see from the shape of the ground you are standing on that there is something buried right there. My tour was organized by Buho's Tour Operator (booked through my hostel) located near the Witch Market and the guide she was simply the best of the best in terms of knowledge and communication in Eng and Spanish.

an awesome place...there are no words to describe the genius loci - archeologist Artur Posnanski about a 100 years ago was saying that the structures were built over 15,000 years ago - characterizing it as the oldest place on Earth

(Translated by Google) Kalasasaya (in Aymara "standing stones"), would have been the ceremonial center of the Tiwanaku complex. It is the largest temple: 128.66 meters long x 119.06 wide; Its rectangular structure is based on columns of sandstone and carved stones, between which there are drainage pipes for rainwater. The main access is made up of a staircase of 7 - sacred number - steps oriented to the east, through which the first rays of the sun enter in the morning, indicating the probability of an ascent to the celestial plane to a temple consecrated to the Sun. The monoliths that are erected inside it would have been indicators of solar movement; the corners and entrance mark the solstices and equinoxes with precision. In addition, there are remains of what would have been small semi-subterranean rooms arranged so that seven were on each side of the patio. Inside the Temple, "La Puerta del Sol" and the monoliths "Ponce" and "El Fraile" stand out; in turn, the west wall known as "Chunchukala" or "Balcony wall". It had 11 pillars that marked the different positions of the Sun during the year, accurately marking the equinoxes and solstices. In the north wall there are two blocks with perforations that imitate, to scale, the human ear and acted as sound amplifiers.

Inside the complex of tiwanaku, the absurd answer of our science is to attribute the word "temple" to all the places where they don't have answers, is better if you visit it and get your own personal true

90 pesos for the tour and 100 pesos for the entrance to the museums. You cannot take photos of the objects inside the museum and caretakers are constantly watching you in the rooms. Museums in Bolivia have the same vibe for foreigners, booked with your information and charging you triple. Little information from the tour guide, and even less in the information written in the museums. Still, the unearthed buildings are worth it.

(Translated by Google) Rewarding space for its location, away from the city. It comforts spiritually by the tranquility (when I went there were not many tourists), the light that gives clarity to the location (facilitates the photographic taking of landscapes of skies of intense blue and white clouds), the wind that keeps the sky clear of threatening clouds of rain. Reward the archaeological approach to know the shapes, materials, architectural and sculptural designs and engravings. It is advisable to pay the full entrance to the archeological sites and museums of the area to have a better historical panorama, although it is not economical: $ 300 Bolivians.

(Translated by Google) Kalasasaya is the oldest temple in the complex, has an area that matches a football field, there was a celestial observatory, according to studies the seasons were calculated with great precision and such information was used in agriculture, but many Theories speculate that other mysterious ceremonies were taking place in Kalasasaya, meaning "Place of Standing Stones" or "Temple of Standing Stones." The site underwent an unsuccessful restoration and does not reflect today the grandeur of the past, ironically the current work is far behind what it was in the past.
