If you are a history buff, this palace located a short travel away from Stockholm is a must-visit for many reasons. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and still serves the current royal family of Sweden. The entire area is huge, consisting of the main building, three gardens and some other attractions, so you can spend half a day here if you want to visit everything. We were completionist and covered most of it, including the Chinese Pavilion and the Goth Tower at the outskirts, took hours of walking. We really enjoyed the experience, as the gardens were tranquil and the palace historical, immersing ourselves in both nature and cultural aspect. But if you're tight on time, visiting the main palace building is enough. Do take the guided tour if you're able to, as they provide some additional info into the lives of the kings and queens who lived here. It was quite an informative experience and the price was quite reasonable. Else the info boards are sufficient. We also recommend taking the boat here, at least for one leg of the journey, for the full experience, else you can reach here via bus. The boat stops just outside the palace and take the meal option too if you're able cause the seating is nicer. As the royal family is still using this place, quite a number of areas are fenced off, though it was an interesting experience to see royal guards patrolling the space. There are two eating places here should you decide to get a bite here, though it can be quite crowded. So do be mindful of that. Overall, the visit was quite enjoyable with the main palace, Chinese Pavilion and the gardens, and we recommend going for the full experience if you have the time.

It's Sweden's first UNESCO world heritage site and was a gift to their queen at the time. It's a beautiful complex. There's a fee to go around the main building, which has 2 floors and several rooms. But the main UNESCO highlights are actually the theatre and the Chinese pavillion. Can also just walk around for free. It's a big park.

We travelled here last Tuesday on board the Motor Ship Carl Philip, named after the present Swedish king's youngest child, along with some 100 other passengers, mostly retirees, and arrived under changing skies. The royal family occupies the southern part of the castle, guarded by young female and male military recruits. As usual when visiting castles, we took a guided tour, that was a clear deception, maybe because the advanced age of our fellow visitors did not inspire our guide. It was "dusty" so we cut that visit short and spent most of our time in the immense gardens on the western side of the castle. Unfortunately, the time we had did not allow us to visit the theatre so we had to get inspired by the model displayed in one of the halls of the castle before returning to Stockholm by M/S Carl Philip immersed by some violent rain showers. In conclusion, a pleasant day that we could nevertheless have spent better elsewhere.

Drottningholm Palace is a nice place to spend a Sunday when the sun is out. You can take a stroll in the garden. The architecture is nice and the gardens are very well maintained. You can reach the place easily with public transport. There is no fees to take a walk in the garden. Definitely recommend and please visit.

If you really enjoy history, this palace is a great place to visit. The interior design is very intricate and extravagant. You can buy the tickets in the palace, since it doesn't sell out very quickly. The garden is also a very nice walk, but it gets very hot especially in the summer. Drottningholm Palace is currently occupied, so there is less to see based on which rooms are being used at the time. Overall, it's definitely worth coming here.

I've been living in Stockholm for 11 years and never visited this place untill last week🤦🏻‍♂️ I'm telling you this place is like heaven! If you like photographies or just a place for a date then go here. I recommend you to go on a sunny day. There is no entrance fee for this park

Nice surroundings with a possibility for interesting tour inside the palace. The main motive of paintings inside the palace is either antique or great victories in historic wars. The tour is for about 1 hour if you follow the audio guide. However, there was one very unpleasant experience since we took public transportation and we had our backpacks with us. We really needed to pack a bit more since we visited during the winter and also had a lunch with us for later walk around the palace. Entrance to the palace is not cheap, but they do not have a cloak room. Unfortunately, if you have a backpack, they will not let you carry it on your back for security reasons. We did not find it directly on their website when planning the visit. It is kind of crazy rule since they should directly look into your backpack when you arrive if they are concerned about the security. I managed to carry my bag in my hand, but my old mom really suffered and struggled in pain. We tried to explain to the staff that my mom cannot manage to carry her bag with hands, but they had no understanding and no help was offered. It was so disrespectful and I cannot beleive that such lack of good manners and willingness is possible on the grounds of royal palace. And that the royal palace is unable to provide a cloack room. Probably only for more valuable guests than us. They should be an example for the rest of society. And even in the treatment of old people. I tried to help my mom with her backpack, but our experience was significantly worsened.

Only got to see the outside of the palace, as inside tours are closed on Mondays in November. But, the outside was absolutely gorgeous. Fantastic hedge mazes and beautiful landscapes.

It's not as beautiful as Versailles in France, but the building and surrounding gardens are worth seeing. You need 2-3 hours for the trip. Of course, if you like walking and relaxing, you need to reserve more time in this place. An adult ticket costs SEK 140.

The place itself is not that big. But the gardens surrounding it are huge. Not only are the gardens big but they are beautiful as well. The way that they decorate the trees is amazing. And very well maintained. There are fountains and waterfalls that are just so pretty. If you really wanted to see all of it you would need at the very least a few hours. There is a tiny hedge maze perfect for playing hide and seek.

The palace is beautiful but the gardens and property are the real stars! Perfect place for strolling all day. Don't go to the castle right when the boat arrives, to avoid crowding. Amazing to think that this much wealth could be concentrated in one family for 500 years through war, property seizure, and going Protestant to stop giving money to Rome.

The castle is very beautiful. The garden is also beautiful, and it's nice to stroll through it. However, I don't necessarily recommend visiting the interior of the castle. It's not very well-maintained, and most of the furniture is covered. Only one piece is left for display.

Somewhat far away from Stockholm’s city center but easily accessible through public transport (Metro + Bus). Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy visiting palaces and learning about local royalty. Architecturally speaking, the main facade is quite interesting but it’s the many rooms inside, all with gorgeous decorations, that really stand out. Make sure to visit the palace theatre as well, really interesting place and the guide is truly amazing and passionate about the place.

Not bad, but from one place to another nobody knows the information about other place. The strange thing is that all of the marble are painted, not the real thing. In particular, the theater is visited only by tour and in 45 minutes! Nobody knows what is timing of the boat to go back.

Was a cool palace to see. It's not a must-see in my book if you've seen the Palace of Versailles already. Otherwise it's a chill place to hang out for part of a day. It doesn't have much shade if you go on a sunny day. Also I'm very amused that they used to summer a 15 minute walk from their main residence.

It's a place you should definitely visit when you're in Stockholm. We were there on a Friday afternoon. It was not very crowded, which made it pleasant to enjoy the paintings & co. There was also quite a bit to read, but I expected more. I would recommend anyone going there to take a guided tour to get the most out of it. Last but not least, take a walk through the large park. On a nice day it is very beautiful.

Absolutely beautiful palace with stunning garden/grounds surrounding it. I've been in summer, spring, and winter and in each of these times it always looked impressive and beautiful. There's a lovely café where you can get lovely wine, waffles with berries & cream, and pastries and cakes. Inside the palace itself is stunning; all of the rooms are so different but all are opulent and kept in perfect condition. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Sweden - this is a location you definitely won't be disappointed with!

The Drottningholm Palace and its surrounding gardens were designed in stages over 400 years, allowing visitors to look back in time as they travel through the well-maintained and spacious park. The symmetrical French-styled Baroque garden in front of the palace was installed in the 17th century, with bronze sculptures taken from Prague and Denmark. The Chinese Pavilion was gifted to the Queen in the 18th century, and the English landscape garden at the north was created, complete with bridged islands, ponds, canals, large open grass lawns and antique Italian marble statues.

Great spot to walk around and sight see. Touring the theatre took less than 30 minutes but was worth it! It's not the biggest but the history and design is beautiful. The cafe is also really nice. Make sure you pay the parking fee in the lot. They're constantly scanning plates to check.

(Translated by Google) Gardens created under the influence of the West and the West are symmetrical, and this is a typical example. For those who are watching these, Japanese style is rare. It seems that the begging for nothing is the driving force of human evolution. Drottningholm Palace is a must-see location in Stockholm. It is elegant, large, and historical. The gardens are large, peaceful, and riddled with corners to compose artful photography and spend an afternoon walking, talking, and thinking. As you can see in the photos below, during the 2020 pandemic the gardens were also a place of solitude and reflection.

Lovely weekend trip out of the city center. You can pre buy admission tickets online or in the palace at the front desk/gift store area. Palace tour is only self guided currently (covid reasons?). Very easy to follow the signs through the palace, and accessible rooms all have museum labels/caption in English and Swedish. Always interesting to see how royals lived and how their tastes differed back in the day. You aren’t able to walk through the entire palace, but you get to see a decent amount of rooms. Over all doesn’t take too long in my opinion, maybe 1-2hrs depending on how long you linger and how busy the palace is.

A fantastic castle in a huge park area surrounded by the sea. It is actually older than the King palace in downtown Stockholm. There are many rooms and halls in baroque and rococo style and a splendid library, that was made for the Queen with the assistance of Carl Linnaeus. The overall feeling is very close to that of Schonbrunn in Vienna.

Lovely palace with somewhat faded interiors in the public viewing areas. But they are interesting & historic. The grounds are beautifully kept but a bit bland. The lake views are quite nice.

Beautiful and serene castle to visit from Stockholm. 2 hours is plenty of time to go through the interiors and walk through most of the grounds including (but not entering) the Chinese Theatre. The interiors are quite nice, but it’s not massive. Would recommend going there by taxi or train, and coming back with the boat at the time the castle closes to enjoy a relaxing return to civilisation with a perfect light. Book a bundle ticket online.

Nice castle and gardens, rooms are a bit spare and you do not get to see that many considering the size of the castle, but it is a working home. The cafe on premises is very nice, good variety of food!

The palace is very interesting spot to visit. You can reach via Prins Carl Philip boat. It takes around 1 hr from Stockholm. Do not miss Drottningholm Theatre tour. Its located in a small building behind the palace next to the gift shop. The instructor was very informative, insightful and good sense of humor. Enjoyed this a lot and recommend this for everyone who visit the palace. Note that theatre tour is free admission for those with GO City Pass.

I wish i could visit it inside but this year woth corona, it was closed. The inner yard is so large and is better to choose proper shoes so that you will enjoy the walk. Nice view around the castle too. The parking space is quite small though and it might need some attention for such a visited place.

The Drottningholm Palace (Swedish: Drottningholms slott) is the private residence of the Swedish royal family. Drottningholm is near the capital Stockholm. Built on the island Lovön (in Ekerö Municipality of Stockholm County), it is one of Sweden's Royal Palaces. It was originally built in the late 16th century, and it served as a regular summer residence of the Swedish royal court for most of the 18th century. Apart from being the private residence of the Swedish royal family, the palace is a popular tourist attraction.

The palace the perfect spot to spend a sunny afternoon. You can freely walk around the grounds, visit the sites, like the Chinese Pavilion, and the garden without a ticket. If you want to go inside the palace, you need to purchase a ticket inside and then you get access to a small part of the palace. The inside is very nice; I walked around without a guide and it took me about an hour to look at everything and read the signs in the rooms.

This is a gorgeous XVIII century Baroque palace, built in Northern European architectural traditions. It is rather small, especially when compared to Austrian, Russian, or French imperial palaces. However, it is very cozy and well-maintaned. The left half of the palace is occupied by the royal family of Sweden and is therefore inaccessible to the public. The park is a mixture of French orderly park style and British natural park landscape design. It is of smaller size, too, as compared to Peterhoff, for example. I think the palace is certainly one of the must-see destinations in Stockholm. It is also quite affordable to visit, as far as ticket prices are concerned.

Really a beautiful castle, I've been unlucky to visit with bad weather and with some closed attractions. Would like to visit back in a sunny day. Unfortunately, fly with a drone is not allowed that is the main negative aspect, given how beautiful is the palace with the park. Other note to recommend is the cafeteria outside the palace that offers quite a good offer of food but quite pricey.

  • 5/5 Benjamin M. 3 years ago on Google
The palace was really beautiful. It takes around 1 hour to see all the rooms and read the history behind it. I had a small talk with one of the workers there, and she was beyond kind to tell me more details and tips! Personnel is very kind and helpful! Walking the gardens and park is also very nice and relaxing, so don’t miss the chance to do it!

Beautiful garden, unfortunately all the cafes in the area close quite early at 16.00. Would be great to have a place to have some drinks on a beautiful summer afternoon. We did not enter the palace.

Came here as part of a cruise tour. Went to the theater and palace. Both were very interesting, esp in light of how they decorated. Almost all of the marble and even some of the doors are completely painted. Why you may ask? It was cheaper and they wanted to look rich back in the day. For that fact some this place is worth a visit!

A beautiful spot just outside of Stockholm to see how the royal family lives. Expect to spend about 30-45mins inside, and then be sure not to miss a stroll through the garden. In both areas sections are blocked since it is the current residence. I found it easiest to take a taxi from Stockholm as there isn't direct public transportation.

  • 5/5 J. V. 9 months ago on Google
Beautiful summer palace. Left half is occupied, right half is open to public. No ac in public rooms. Some lives "royals" lead. Beautiful lake and gardens too.

Gorgeous site to visit inside and outside, i.e. the gardens. The ceilings in the Palace are stunning - you will do a lot of neck exercises :) Peaceful gardens with ducks and wild geese. There is a coffee shop as well.

  • 4/5 Terri W. 9 months ago on Google
We spent a great afternoon walking around the grounds (free) and did the paid tour of the palace. If you go inside the palace, definitely take the 5 seconds to scan the QR code and open the audio tour. There is a ton of additional info in it, beyond the 3 paragraphs on a sign in each room. The lives, possessions, and quirks of royals are always amusing... whether it's the secret door/staircase between the king's and queen's bedchambers or the fact that one of the queens wanted portraits of all of her dogs. On the grounds, take some time to explore the lakes (off to right) in addition to the well-worn paths to the Chinese Pavilion. The massive oaks are spectacular.

  • 5/5 Sofian A. 9 months ago on Google
We didn't go inside, were more interested in outside. Garden behind is superb and well maintained. You can literally get lost here. Here you have to come when you don't have to rush back. Sit and relax.

When you visit Stockholm, I recommend you to visit the Drottningholm Palace. There is a lot of history to see and it is also very peaceful there. The reason I gave 4 stars is firstly, the tickets were not included in my GoCity Pass, secondly, I had to pay extra to visit Chinese Pavilion and finally, it is not really good marked the way to the Chinese Pavilion, since it is a 20 minute way. But Drottningholm Palace is beautiful!

You will also get a chance to learn about the history of the palace and the Swedish monarchy. The palace has stunning gardens that feature a mix of Baroque and English landscaping styles. The gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. here are several dining options at Drottningholm Palace, including a cafe, a restaurant, and a picnic area. You can enjoy Swedish cuisine or grab a quick snack while exploring the palace grounds.

(Translated by Google) So nice for a walk. There is also a "dog island" where you can have the dog loose. On the weekends there can be quite a lot of dogs though. (Original) Så fint för en promenad. Finns även en "hundö" där man kan ha hunden lös. Helgerna kan det vara ganska mycket hundar dock.

Beautiful palace. The gardens are incredible! Unfortunately, it was already closed due to the end of the summer but was worth the ride here from Stockholm!

I didn't go inside but the gardens were beautiful especially with all the fall colors. Totally worth it and will be coming back!

Loved starting this journey with an hour boat ride and taking in the beautiful scenery. The grounds were my favorite part of the palace. Absolutely stunning, especially in the fall when the leaves are changing. The interior is limited to visitors as this is a residence of the royal family. If you are in Stockholm this is a definite must!

(Translated by Google) Dark in the evening. Almost no lighting at all. Sad that you see nothing. If you are afraid of the dark, it is not a good idea to go on a dark winter evening 🥶 (Original) Mörkt på kvällen. Nästan ingen belysning alls. Tråkigt att man ser ingenting. Är man mörkrädd är det inget bra idé att åka ditt en mörk vinterkväll 🥶

👍👍 Excellent actual Viking site. Superb full scale reconstructions, expansive and detailed dioramas. Actual burial mounds. Is very difficult to find how to get to the island via Stromma boats. Worth the effort.
