They lock the gate at 10:00 pm and go to sleep. There was no mention of this to begin with. I learned it in an unpleasant way. Firstly, this is not a built-for-a-hostel place. It is a small two-story house with a family living in. There are a few small rooms upstairs that the family runs as a “hostel.” Due to Covid-19 pandemic, there was no other traveler than myself. At 9:45 on a Saturday night, I decided to get some snacks. I returned at around 10:15, and the gate was locked. Rang the bell, banged on the door until the neighbors started looking out of their windows, but nobody unlocked the door. Tried two more times in the following two hours, threw some pebbles at one of the bedroom window, but to no vail. Frustrated, I concluded that they must be hibernating and had to find a hotel to spend the night. It was an expensive one because no other hotels accepted credit cards. I am just glad I had my credit card and ID with me. The other day, I go at 10:30 am, still locked. Finally around 11:00, I saw they came out of their hibernation. I told them the situation and asked them not to lock the gate until they were sure I was in. The response was that they have to lock the gate at 10:00 and they were sorry. Well, who comes to Orizaba to be locked on a Saturday at 10:00 pm?!! What if there is an emergency, and I need to get out. Why am I not provided with a key if they have to lock the gate? If I had known that there was a curfew, I would not have booked this place. What is the point of going for a vacation but not be able to go in an out freely?? One may very well want a drink or something on a freaking Saturday night! I had trusted the ratings of this place but can’t understand how it gets a good rating. It was more like Auschwitz camp, rather than Base Camp (what’s the deal? are we suddenly on Mt Everest?!). The rooms were too small. Can’t imagine how it would be at full capacity. The family was loud. The boiler outlet opened directly to the bathroom. Language barrier; only the son spoke in English. I felt like cast away. Bad experience.

Friendly and accommodating hosts, I stayed here for only one night but I enjoyed my time. Comfy beds, nice and quiet, and good company. A+

I had a great stay here and met another solo traveler and we ended up traveling together for a little bit. The hostel was small but everyone I came in contact with was nice! The hostel is also very close to town and I felt safe walking to and from the hostel after dark by myself. The owners provided me with a key to get in and out of the hostel after hours. The only downside was that the beds were a little uncomfortable for me. The hostel owners were very nice and invited me to join them on the Pico de Orizaba with a few family members the day after I arrived. I had a great time & would definitely stay again!

Place hard to find but really worth it. Better to book before arrival. Beds comfortable, draps and even towel included, toilet and shower super nice. And Sarah makes you feel like home, share her true smile and beautiful laugh with you ;) in the kitchen you have everything you need (even more!) but city is full of good and very cheap food. Perfect location!

Not a hostel - someone’s house. Previous reviews and the praises written on the walls baffled me and me fellow travellers. We were let in by a neighbour. No-one welcomed us or introduced themselves as the owners/hosts over 2 days. Atmosphere was awkward. Room was tiny for 4 beds with limited, unsecure storage. Homeowners junk in living area. Door key didn’t work. Not good value for price at all - better find a cheap hotel. Forgot my powerbank and asked a (paid) favor to send it on to Oaxaca. Response was initially positive but after over two weeks of having to repeatedly ask for progress I gave up. Worst accommodation experience in Mexico.

Perfect location, the house is clean, the kitchen is fully equipped and there is hot water. Fernando and Maria made me feel like home. I didn't want to leave this peaceful place! Thanks for everything

Firstly, the hostel is not marked on the outside door, indicating that the address was the Base Camp hostel. As mentioned in other reviews, the rooms are located in the owners home. For me, it was a bit unusual and awkward. All the essentials were covered, and the home was comfortable and presentable. I was not inclined to use the owners kitchen. I'm a foodie for me, that was a downer because I like cooking, so again, I'm a bit uncomfortable there. The location was spot on awesome. Walking distance to the river walk, a must do and the historic district again awesome and a must do.

Best place to stay in. It’s a quiet area and its 10 min walking distance from the center and very close to shops, restaurants, bars and public transport. I can assure you’ll walk out of this place with a smile on your face !! Thank you Fernando for your hospitality, I really felt at home!! I’ll definitely come back again 🎉

The stay was amazing, lovely host. It was in a very quite and secluded area but yet close to a lot of shop. Host gave a lot of suggestions as to were to visit and go explore. All in all I recommend staying here if you want great company, a place that feels like home and a comfy place to lay your head at night.
