This
low
rating
is
only
based
on
latest
directive
by
the
Forest
Department
(DFO)
and
due
to
genuine
safety
issues
of
unfamiliar
trekkers.
The
place
and
the
road
itself
is
paradise
though
if
you
are
a
nature
lover.
Below
are
the
major
cons
as
of
2023
end:
CONS:
1)
The
waterfall
is
officially
closed
sine
die
by
Forest
Department
as
of
2023
end.
Forest
checkposts
have
blocked
the
main
road,
and
the
last
checkpost
(3
km
before
Aapkhol)
is
manned
and
they
politely
caution
you
against
taking
"unofficial"
shortcut
forest
routes
either
(we
had
mistakenly
crossed
one
unmanned
checkpost
at
Mendhapali).
There
are
crude
banners
on
trees
on
the
way
too
to
inform
people
that
the
waterfalls
are
closed.
2)
Leopard
sightings
are
common
in
this
area
and
as
per
the
forest
guys,
even
a
Royal
Bengal
Tiger
(RBT)
has
been
detected
by
camera
traps
in
this
area.
Bears
are
common.
It's
not
surprising
because
this
area
comes
under
Debrigarh
Wildlife
Sanctuary
and
on
other
side
of
hills
is
the
core
area
which
has
80
confirmed
leopards
&
one
confirmed
RBT.
3)
Another
caution
by
the
Forest
Department
--
There
is
high
density
of
wild
boards
&
sambar
deer
here
and
poachers
sometimes
place
high
power
electric
wires
as
traps
(sometimes
villagers
do
that
to
protect
their
crops).
This
places
humans
too
at
risk.
4)
It's
dense
reserve
forest,
not
a
picnic
spot.
Even
if
it's
officially
allowed,
try
to
go
in
a
large
group
of
no
less
than
8
people.
A
leopard
might
avoid
such
a
group,
a
bear
might
still
attack,
and
God
bless
your
entire
group
if
a
tiger
decides
to
attack.
Reality
is
different
from
movies.
PROS:
1)
It's
a
forest
paradise.
Dense
green
pristine
forest
despite
being
not-so-far
from
nearby
towns
and
villages
(hardly
30km
from
Bargarh).
Even
our
trip
to
the
last
checkpost
was
memorable
due
to
the
scenery
(we
entered
from
Mendhapali
side.
2)
It's
much
better
than
other
waterfalls
in
Western
Odisha,
which
are
facing
the
negative
effects
of
tourism
and
crowds.
Due
to
it's
remoteness
and
relative
inaccessibility,
this
places
is
mostly
natural.
Gandhamardhan
waterfalls
(Kapildhar
etc.)
are
good,
but
they
are
crowded.
3)
Though
now
closed
(due
to
valid
reasons),
it's
a
trekker's
paradise.
The
trek
to
Aapkhol
itself
is
mesmerising,
but
the
4km
trek
from
there
to
Bad
Aapkhol
is
nirvana
for
nature
lovers
as
it's
through
dense
scenic
forests.
SUMMARY:
As
responsible
citizens,
as
well
as
your
as
for
your
safety,
respect
the
forest
department
rules
and
cautions
and
be
aware
that
you
are
entering
a
WILDLIFE
sanctuary,
not
a
picnic
spot.
Don't
enter
even
if
no
forest
staff
is
there
at
the
checkposts
to
caution
you.
