What a nice community resource! The grounds are lovely. This is both an indoor and outdoor experience. The West Building has the permanent collection, and it's very decent with a few big names (Raphael, Monet, Rodin). Loved that everything is free. Lots of outdoor space designated for events and short walks/hikes.

This museum is amazing. We didn't realize how big it was, and came after 12 pm on a Saturday and only had time for the West building. We came back on Sunday and spent the whole day doing the East building and outdoors. You can easily spend days here. There's so much to look at, and the paths outside are great, mostly all paved, and extensive. The bathrooms are clean, and each building has a free locker area to lock up your jackets/bags while you're walking around.

The entire experience at this museum was exceptional! Outdoor areas are great, very peaceful and lots of sculptures. There is a lot of walking involved, so wear comfortable shoes. There are multiple nature trails as well as the outdoor exhibits, they are very relaxing and you can rent a bike. We also had lunch at the cafe and would recommend. The indoor exhibits are simply amazing! There is something for everyone, from Renaissance portraits to the ancient Egyptian collection to the Roman mosaic to the modern art. There is so much to look at and I would have spent a whole week there wandering around. There is also an interactive area that is fun for little and big kids, and even adults. Everything about this museum is great, and I would definitely recommend this for any art lover.

This place is free? I just don't understand how this huge place is free for all to enjoy. Amazing grounds, fun sculptures, interactive art, nature beautifully maintained, extensive walking trails... I could go on about the unique gem that this place is, but instead I say go see for yourself. All the amenities too, free parking, access to a cafe, bicycle rental, great places to relax and take a break. The only thing that it might be worth knowing before going is if you mainly want to stay indoors call before you go, on our particular visit the west building was closed and the east building has a large number of exhibits getting redone, so if you plan was not to be outside and walking around talking it all in you may not have enjoyed it as much as there would be limited things to see.

From history to modern art, paintings to sculptures, metal to fabric, visuals to audio, indoor and outdoor - here's a little of everything! Must visit for a rejuvenating experience. Choose a day when the temperatures are comfortable for a long walk outdoors to make the most of your day

Truly a treasure that is accessible to all. From someone that has lived in cities where it’s a literal nightmare to go to the “local” art museum, NCMA is amazing. From the park grounds with trails & outdoor concert areas to the great FREE parking to the amazing are collection & amazing exhibits. It’s FREE admission. First time we visited it many years ago I was stunned at the collections - I seriously underestimated the museum before walking in the doors. They have the largest Rodin exhibit outside of France. Definitely worth more than just a visit. I realized after this years (2021) Art in Bloom exhibit that I hadn’t reviewed the museum. So I am including some photos I took during the exhibit.

I've been coming here to walk the trails and view exhibits since 2009. Very peaceful during the weekdays. The park and museum are always clean. I brought my 6yo son for his first visit a couple weeks back and he absolutely loved it! He would have stayed all day if we could. We visited the museum first, then took our time exploring the park. We stopped by the 'Cloud Chamber' and pretended to be Hobbits for a bit. **I recommend visiting the CLOUD CHAMBER around NOON when the sun is directly overhead as the tree tops project their shadows nicely inside the chamber!! we plan to come back for many more adventures. Thank you NCMOMA!

This art museum was under construction when we went but they still had a lot to see. We saw the very cool exhibits inside and they have a vending machine to purchase little handmade art pieces, which was a lot of fun and we got some cute things. The best part was the outdoor exhibits. They have amazing architecture and I want to return soon! It is also a great walking track for families and pets. Tons of parking.

Absolutely stunning. I was impressed, both by the exhibitions and the park. You'll need a full day if you really want to delve into the collections. The staff is extremely friendly and the lighting is most of the time ideal, which really stimulates our contemplation of the pieces of art on display. Plus we were warmly welcomed, we really appreciated the passion that the staff showed.

Beautifully done and free! The best deal in NC is this museum and the natural science museum in downtown. Perfect for a day of strolling. We enjoyed everything and I was impressed with the food they serve in the cafe. We ate outside and strolled through the outdoor area as well. My 3 year old loved it

A museum worthy of a successful capital city. The real treasure is outdoors in the sculpture garden. Be sure to walk through the Rodin exhibit outside.

Of all the gems that North Carolina has this may just top the list!!! The outdoor exhibits are stunning! The grounds are spectacular! The traveling exhibit are always intriguing and beautiful. The museum store is so amazing and is filled with fun souvenirs. Not to mention the restaurant which has some delightful options. overall, you can spend a good half day here and have a wonderful time with the family.

This is a fabulous walking area. Dog and bike friendly too. There are benches and vistas aplenty. A gorgeous combination of meadow, shady woodlands, pond, hills, and resting spots with large scale sculptures and native floral. There is a lovely bee garden with hives and plenty of healthy activity. A must if you are in the area. Open dawn to dusk, plenty of parking. Over 5 miles of trails, I didn't even cover half. The general art museum is free as well, but I didn't have enough time for that.

Gorgeous place! We usually go there to walk outside and there is lots of space to spread out from other people. What I especially love is that the grass is all natural (not an urban desert like many people’s lawns) and they have wild flowers planted throughout the area. Not only the wild environment looks absolutely stunning but it also supports bees and other insects. If you look closely, the grass has wild clover mixed in which is a native flower and feeds rabbits and other wildlife plus it’s drought resistant and stays green all summer long. It doesn’t grow long so you don’t have to mow as often if at all. We need more (or all) lawns to be natural to support our wildlife. Plus it’s healthier for people too. Another great thing - the NC Museum of Art is dog-friendly! There is a creek in the woods so dogs can quench their thirst there if you forgot water. I recommend all people who are travelling and need a place to stop and stretch their legs and give a break to their dogs/kids to stop at this place! Take advantage of this beautiful place and don’t forget to take pictures! Love this place! Breathe fresh air not pesticides!

Great place with lots of free art to view, plus optional paid exhibits. Very nice outdoor area with walkways as well. I would have given 5 stars except that they aren't really enforcing any social distancing at this point (January 2022). I attended the Alfonse Mucha exhibit and there was a lot of crowding just inside the entrance, making it difficult to avoid getting close to others. I expected a better system to be in place by this point.

Must see art museum in Raleigh. Admission is free and there are many wonderful works of art to see. Paintings, contemporary and renaissance, sculptures, earthenware, and outdoor installations. Absolutely beautiful works that are well taken care and displayed in a clean and modern setting.

This is a great thing to explore with your family in Raleigh. They have a lot of knowledgeable staff that works here as well. There is a never ending amount of things you can learn about in these museums. It’s very clean and very cool. It is also free entrance so if you have a big family and looking for something cheap/free to do. I would highly recommend the art and science museums! In the science museum there is a live butterfly exhibit!!

Beautiful museum. We came for the Dutch Art exhibit- it was spectacular. I generally prefer 1-2 hours at the museum, here I was happy to stay for several hours to take it all in and I’d happily return. Our local family purchased memberships which seem really worth it. Cafe was decent- great cappuccino, sandwiches were not bad, salad had great dressing. The outdoor grounds are beautiful and lots of fun for kids and adults!

This was the first time a concert was held here and I was part of it, Yay! It was the "Black Nativity" play. It was a wonderful break in a Saturday afternoon. The performances were really good. The songs had the audience singing along and praising. It was a personal time of reflecting on the reason for the season. They expected 200 people and received over 1500 attendees. Raleigh we need more of these free events that corporate sponsors support. I love these type of events. They should be held every year, become a part of the week events/activities leading up to the big day and they will quickly become part of family traditions. Traditions strengthen the family and makes the core of our communities more bonded and stronger. Please consider doing more. Merry Christmas!

Absolutely loved the museum and the museum park. The park has a few miles of trails, guiding you around various sculptures and installations which were interesting and remarkable. Then, the museum itself is such a little jewel box. So many different types of beautiful art in such a small space. I especially enjoyed the African art exhibit and the Rodin Court, but it was all very well curated. If you are in the Raleigh area, definitely recommend.

Really enjoyed the Alphonse Mucha art nouveau exhibit. The museum is very family friendly. The day we visited the weather was nice and there were several families with young children enjoying the fountains and picnic tables by the entrance. The Museum Park is popular but not too crowded.

There are so many wonderful things to experience at NCMA. Walking trails, beautiful gardens teaming with flowers & amazing art, large open fields for your next gather or quiet picnic. Outdoor events such as concerts and family friendly movies take place throughout the season. And these are the experiences on the outside of the building-inside is full of amazing art to discover or rediscover. So bring your family to experience an wonderful treasure and maybe introduce them to their next favorite artist. Who knows they could have art hanging on the walls some day. Oh- and they have OTTERS in the pond! ☺️

This is one of my favorites museums in the USA. It has everything and have new exhibitions all year round. I have visited this place 3 times in 6 months and there is always something new, this last time was sculptures by Auguste Rodin which took me by surprise cause two months ago I went to museum Soumaya in Mexico City and they have a great number of his pieces. There is always something you can enjoy from this place, it might be the museum, the trails, the cafeteria, the garden, the pond…etc It’s very versatile.

A quiet place to reflect on the creations of some of the most talented people in the world free of charge. Everyone has different interpretations of artwork so that is what makes it so interesting to go there with a friend. Some truly astonishing sculptures, oil paintings, pottery, and craftsmanship here. They have contemporary, historical, educational, and special events sections. Even the outdoors portion is neat the way it is designed with outlandishly shaped sculptures scattered around and the grounds are well kept. The move nights here that they do outdoors like Back to the Future are a fun activity for all that you can do a picnic with!

Absolutely beautiful museum with stunning outdoor spaces. Saw a family having a picnic and people strolling (and biking) around. I was fortunate enough to see Ruth E Carters exhibit and it was so captivating to see her career accomplishments laid out with thorough background information. The amount of research she does for her costume design is above & beyond. I ran out of time to finish seeing the exhibits in the second building, so I'll have to return!

As a parent who values creativity and self-expression in my children, the NC Art Museum has become a cherished destination for our family. With its ever-changing seasonal exhibitions and delightful holiday festivities, this cultural gem has not only entertained us but has also played a pivotal role in nurturing my children's artistic inclinations and boosting their self-assurance. One of the aspects that sets the NC Art Museum apart is its commitment to interactive experiences. Rather than simply observing artwork from a distance, children are encouraged to engage with the exhibits through hands-on activities and interactive displays. This hands-on approach not only makes art more accessible but also fosters a sense of ownership and creativity in young minds. I wholeheartedly recommend it to families seeking to enrich their children's lives through North Carolina Museum of Art.

I was very pleased to find so many art in Raleigh, it makes me feel happy to come to a place where people is interested in creating community trough art and it seems like the government also encourage and support this, it’s very full filling. The museum was good and big, go with time if you want to truly enjoy it. It’s free so is very accessible for everybody!

After experiencing many of this country’s best art galleries and museums, I can honestly say that the North Carolina Museum of Art has a selection that can complete with them all. This is by far one of my favorite museums with an incredibly diverse range of artists, mediums, styles, and time periods. Their permanent exhibit includes sculpture and 2D pieces from antiquity to present day. With a multitude of rooms and outdoor exhibits to explore, this can easily become a full-day experience. This is one I am happy to return to each year! 🤩 Pro tip ~~~ I might advise to avoid Saturdays if at all possible, as the crowd may make your experience less enjoyable.

Excellent experience, as always! The staff were all cheerful and fabulously helpful. I greatly appreciated that the dining room carried non-dairy milk for those with allergies! The exhibits are well-organized and perfectly spaced to allow crowds to easily meander. The standard exhibits are incredible in their own right, and the traveling and seasonal exhibits intermingle nicely and provide perfect balance to the subject matter. The space is beautiful and a joy to spend time in!

Nice place to visit and enjoy. I think in NC we are fortunate the 3 main Museums are free (except for special exhibitions/events where you need to purchase tickets) Parking at this location is also free. Hopefully that won’t change because gives us the opportunity to enjoy great art. They are doing some work in the courtyard area(where one of the infinity pools and some statutes are located). Overall is a really nice experience, bot buildings and outdoor areas. You can go alone, family, friends or even on a date and enjoy a different atmosphere. #NCMA

We went to see one exhibit and quickly realized we should have allowed more time to see the rest of the museum. Loved Afrofuturism. We also had tickets to the outdoor concert featuring Samara Joy. Rain was predicted for the day and hours before the concert was to start I got an email that arrangements were made to change the venue indoors. Brilliant! Bravo to the museum and staff for making this happen.

Came here with my boyfriend about a month ago and had a great time. Their were two different buildings, one consisting mainly of art, and the other with a dining area, store, and more art. There were also several outside areas to explore. All the art was very unique and engaging. I would like to mention, their is no admittance fee or anything, unless you want to view the private room. Would definitely like to come back and see more of what the outdoor areas have to offer.

We honestly only walked around outside. But it is a beautiful stroll with plenty to see, read, and do. You can bring your little ones and see sculptures and nature combined for free. It was a great walk on a fall day.

We had a great time at this museum! We went with a school group with the Expedition School. The focus was on art made by women and on art made of recycled and found objects. The NC Art Museum offered a excellent docent who taught us about many of the works on display. Our teacher had worked with the museum in advance to create a scavenger hunt for the kids to find the art that will fit into their future science, ELA and Art projects. I’ve been to this museum many times before on my own, but I really appreciated how they handled having a slew of middle school kids trying to navigate their assignment. Excellent space and we loved the art!!

The North Carolina Museum of Art is a beautiful place to visit. With both indoor and outdoor exhibits you can spend hours walking around to see everything. Outside of their beautiful exhibits and works of art they have an amazing venue space for things such as weddings. Other than the speciality exhibit the museum is free to visit and there are some spaces with interactive pieces.

A MUST!! What a beautiful museum. I highly recommend going around 2 PM or 3 PM during the week as it wasn’t that busy at all. I’m really excited to walk the trail. Highly recommend :-)

Small museum with some interesting pieces though one does tire of the endless European paintings of the birth and death of the Christ. The Rodin exhibit was especially interesting and wish there were more comparison with other artists of the genre. The grounds are really nice, with sculpture gardens and interactive art like the musical swings.
