It is one of the ancient temples in India, famous for the ancient architecture of the temple and many others reasons. But because of some people all these are going bad. Really feel bad to tell all these things. Some of the temple staffs are very rude and bad behaviour towards the tourist people coming there. Some staffs are taking alot of money from the Touristers for worshiping the God. The surrounding of the temple are not clean and neat, it is a heavenly place so it should be neat and clean always. Very bad smell is there inside the temple no one is caring about this. Temple is a heavenly place so it should be neat and clean as well as the smell of agrabathi and flowers should be there. The temple staffs should be little bit educated then only they will know how to behavior to the tourist people coming there. Lot of fraud people are they to cheat the tourist people coming there.

One of the biggest temple in south india, where shiva linga been worshipped by lord rama on the sea shore. This shiva linga is considered as a Jyothirlinga out of 12 in india. Excellent architecture. Taking holy dip in 21 wel's inside the temple is very sacred. Danushkodi is around 10 kms worth a visit. Awesome journey in train while crossing pamban bridge built across the sea. A must visiting temple.

One of the 12 jyotirlingas :Great temple with superb architecture. This is one of the 12 jyotirlingas in India, Rameswaram ..... Char Dham place... very big and beautiful temple. First people take bath by dipping in sea (agnitheertham which is opposite to east gate of temple) and go to Ramanathasamy temple to take holy water theertham bath from 22 different wells inside temple which is amazing and believed to remove all our bad curses and purify our soul. The tradition of temple is to wear full pants and no badges and phones are allowed. For special and fast darshan people have to pay ₹50 and for 22 pond water bath you have to pay 200 rupees per person and in that you you will be treated as special. And in normal Darshan you have to pay 25 rupees per person for all 22 ponds. but remeber you can'nt enter the mandir with wet clothes and the temple remains open from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. and in evening from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. This temple hosts the longest corridor in in the world for a hindu temple. The total length of the outer corridor is 3850 feet and has an impending 1212 number of pillars all around. The spacious corridor is good to walk through. there is a elephant walked through this corridor during start of puja,. The legend says that Hunuman was sent by Lord Rama to bring a Lingam to worship at an appointedauspicious hour. As Human’s arrival was delayed, Sita moulded a lingam from sand for Rama’s timely worship. It is the main being worshiped as Ramanathaswamy. Disappointed Hunuman was later consoled by Rama by installing the Lingam which was brought by him a little north of Ramanatha, and decreed that the Hunuman’s lingam should have precedence over the Ramanatha in all honours. it is better you higher a priest you can negotiate it is good they took you directly to the main temple without ques and maintemple puraji will perform the pooja and do the abhishek with milk on that time you can easily see the Lingam which made by sand. I hireed a priest in 2000 Rs and he make darshan in very special way after that agian I visited the temple in night to see the arti.. really it is very powerful place...

Easily one of the best temples in India. Great history, massive layout and very well planned. Really love the long passageways with over 1200 towers. Access to the 22 wells are from east and west entrance while the sanctum can be accessed from north or south.

Rameswaram is considered to be one of the most sacred places for the Hindu devotees for attaining Moksha. It is also known as Dakshina Kasi and it is part of the Char Dham pilgrimage. Rameswaram is very important for the Hindus as a pilgrimage to Kasi is considered to be incomplete without a pilgrimage to Rameswaram. Rameswaram temple is devoted to god Siva in the form of Ramanathaswamy. The Rameswaram Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga Siva Shrines in the world. There are 24 very important theerthams in Rameswaram of which 22 are within the temple and bathing in these theerthams is a major aspect of the pilgrimage to Rameswaram.

(Translated by Google) Lord Ramanathaswamy temple Rameswaram The 22 wells in the temple are very special. All these wells were created by Ramara. There was a well in every place where the ram arrows fell. Each of these wells is unique. While on the side of each side, taste, color, salinity, and density vary from water to each well. It is believed that every one of the two Hindus in his lifetime is to be worshiped by Lord Shiva and the water of the river, called Agni theertham. There once lived a sculptor in a village called The primary deity of the temple is Ramanathaswamy (Shiva) in the form of lingam. There are two lingams inside the sanctum - one built by Rama, from sand, residing as the main deity, Ramalingam and the one brought by Hanuman from Kailash called Vishwalingam.Rama instructed that the Vishwalingam should be worshipped first since it was brought by Hanuman - the tradition continues even today. Like all ancient temples in South India, there is a high compound wall (madil) on all four sides of the temple premises measuring about 865 feet furlong from east to west and one furlong of 657 feet from north to south with huge towers (Gopurams) to the east and the west and finished gate towers to the north and south. The temple has striking long corridors in its interior, running between huge colonnades on platforms above five feet high. The second corridor is formed by sandstone pillars, beams, and ceiling. The junction of the third corridor on the west and the paved way leading from the western gopuram to the Setumadhava shrine forms a unique structure in the form of a chess board, popularly known as Chokkattan Madapam, where the Utsava deities are adorned and kept during the Vasanthotsavam (Spring festival) and on the 6th day festival in Adi (July–August) and Masi (February–March) conducted by the Setupati of Ramnad.

A Historically significant temple for Hinduism & said to be an important location part as of the Ramayana. This Temple also gained additional fame towards the end of the British empire as Swami Vivekananda departed for the world religious congress in Chicago from here. It is also one of the 12 & an important Jyothirlingas (prominent Shiva temples) & have been frequented by pilgrims for at least 3 millenniums. It has found mentions in various historical & religious texts. The temple itself is visible from a distance because of the towering gopuram. The Shiv linga & Nandi are quite Massive. Only Hindus are allowed inside the inner sanctum for worship. The rest of the compound is there for everyone to visit. The shopping around is strictly OK. There's also a place where people take a dip at the sea. There are plenty of stores outside the temple premises & there's lodging & restaurants for ethinicities from all parts of India for e.g- Gujarati,Rajasthani,Kerala, Gorkha, punjabi etc

Rameswaram is one of the beautiful place in India. It is having beach and must visit one.No words can describe the feeling about the temple.one of the 4 dhaama and also one of the 12 jyotirlinga Shri Ramanathswamy Temple gives an experience like none. Prior to the darshan one has to take a splash from the 22 different wells to have a pure mind and soul before one gets to see the deity. The temple architecture is no less than the experience, the world famous third corridor is a unique place in itself.Very beautiful temple and ancient architecture. Must visit one.

One of the Architectural wonder. Though there's no known sources of rocks or mountains how the ancestors made it possible? There are 1212 pillars in the world famous 3rd Prakaram. Can't imagine how they did it. Now a days vehicular traffic is restricted near the temple. So plan your visit accordingly. There are too many different sizes of food stalls/restaurants around the Temple. You will never go hungry. For the 22 holy Theertha snanam (holy bath) don't accept what the touts say about the charges. Learn to bargain and start from 50% and you may settle at 60 -70% rate. Don't leave the wet cloths inside the temple. There's no literature asking the devotees to leave their wet cloths inside the temple. This only makes the place more humid. Don't buy any souvenirs inside the Temple. Exorbitant price and you have to carry it for long time. Outside the Temple you have too many options. Choose WISELY. Have a Blissful trip.

One of the must visit places in Rameswaram. The architecture of the temple is really mesmerizing. The temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples in India and one of the Char Dham. There was not much crowding inside the temple except near the bath ritual area. But parking would be difficult near the entrance. It will be better to walk from the hotels or take a taxi to the temple. The entrance area is directly in front of the road. It would be better to give shoes and other belonging to nearby storage facilities. Hopefully it may be improved in the future.

Arulmigu Ramanathaswami temple is the One of the Jyotirling Mandir from 12 Jyotirling of Bharat. Rameshwaram Jyotirling Mandir as it is known to every Hindu is devoted to the Devon ke Dev Mahadev and the Jyotirling here is established by lord Ram in Treta Yug while the was about to start his battle with king of Lanka Rawan. Hence this temple has a very important place in hindu devotees in terms of historical as well as devotional. Temple is at walking distance from the Rameswaram railway station. But from Rameshwaram bus stand you need to hire autos, they will charge around ₹100/-minimum. Before going for darshanam you can take bath in Sea at Agnitirtham. No bags and mobiles are allowed inside the temple premises hence locker or clock rooms are available outside the temple premises. Huge crowd can be seen for Darshanam. VIP darshan culture is also followed here. Charges for shigra & atishigra queues are ₹100/- & ₹150/- respectively. Otherwise free Darshanam wait time is around 1 or 2 hour. This temple is situated near the Arabic Sea. This temple is constructed in south Indian architecture. Temple has largest corridor with more than 1200 pillars in that corridor which attracts your attention. Visited this temple in mid September month, New construction is going on here at many parts of the temple. Government of India and Tamil Nadu needs to take good care of this major devotional temple of India. Rameshwaram town is majorly populated with Muslims people. Hence their is a point in temple after that non Hindus are not allowed to enter.

One of the best pilgrimage sites to visit. Especially that 22 theertham bath gives a different spiritual, magnificent and peaceful feeling. But be careful while taking a bath in the sea because it is not maintained properly and contains sharp stones.

The temple architecture is beautiful it has the longest corridor in the world. But the temple management is horrible. The management has put no sign boards neither they tell the direct us. But demands 5000 to 11000 to show the 22 wells and other shrines in the temple. The wells are also very unhygienic. The magnificent Rameshwaram temple is used as a money spinning machine. The management has appointed 'BROKERS' between the god the devotees. Hope the management take guidance from TTD and Dharmasthala temple, which manages much bigger crowd.

    (Translated by Google) The Rameswaram or Ramanathaswamy temple is relatively less ancient than other temples in South India. According to historical evidence, the sanctum sanctorum of the Ramnaswamy Temple was built by King Parakramabhu of Sri Lanka. By gradually expanding this sanctum, the temple has attained its present form. In the 15th century, King Udayan Sethupathi built its gopuram. Nandi pavilion was also constructed during this period. Later in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, many local kings and merchants built other parts of this temple. The Ramanathaswamy temple is 865 feet in length in the east-west and 657 feet in width in the north-south. There are gopurams or entrances around the temple, of which the gopurams to the east and west are quite high while the gopurams to the north and south are incomplete. A 22 feet high boundary wall is built around the temple. The main temple is 120 feet high. To circumambulate the sanctum sanctorum, three-tier type or corridors are built around it. On both sides of these corridors, 5 feet high platforms have verandas, which are 8 feet in width. These pillars have beautiful stone pillars which are worth visiting. The third type or outermost corridor is world famous for its length. The third corridor has 640 feet of north-south length and 400 feet of east-west. The inner corridor is 224 feet in the east-west side and 352 feet in the north-south side. The width of these corridors ranges from 14.5 to 17 feet. All the corridors of the temple are 3850 feet in length with 1212 pillars. 24 kunds have been constructed inside the temple complex which are called tirthas. The water of these pools is sweet, in which the water of various pilgrimages is brought and released.

I was absolutely stunned by this ancient architectural marvel created by our ancestors. The intricacy in each corner of the temple is well taken care of. Each column is covered with intricate details carved into stones. The inner Santorum is even much more elegant than the exterior and the semi public space. The areas inside the temples are well defined by the ancient Marvels. There is a ticket system Rs. 100/- for the quick darshan which doesn't make any difference from the free darshan line though but this queue is fairly shorter than the other queues. This is an extremely large premises having 4 gopuram in all 4 directions.

Ramanathaswamy Temple is a dedicated to the god Shiva located on Rameswaram (Tamilnadu). It is also one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples. The temple has the longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India. There are 4 gates (East/West/North/South). East gate is the main entry.

Rameshwaram is one of the oldest and most famous pilgrimage center in India and It is also one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples. It is associated with the history of the Ramayana period. Rameshwaram temple is also the symbol of Indian integrity. The Kasi pilgrimage is considered to be one of the most important religious duties of the people. The kasi Yatra is complete only after worshipping Ramanathaswamy in Rameshwaram. Rameshwaram is the only south indian siva temple of the four major temples of India viz, Rameshwaram, Dwarka, Puri and Badrinath .Of these char Dham, Rameshwaram is the only Shiva temple and the other three are vaishnava temples. Out of the twelve Jyotirlingas eleven are located to the north and only Rameswaram is in the south Indian . The place is called as Rameswaram because of the worship of shiva (Ishvara)by Sri Ramapran in this place, It is one of the 274 Paadal Petra Sthalams, where the three of the most revered Nayanars (Saivite saints), Appar, Sundarar and Tirugnana Sambandar, have glorified the temple with their songs. The temple has the longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India

(Translated by Google) There are really no words to describe the temple. The temple is a testament to the architecture of Tamil Nadu. Shiva temple built by Tamil kings near the sea. Elegant architecture. World famous temple for Tirtha pilgrimage. The pillars of the temple are world famous. There are sculptures full of beautiful carvings. The Moolavar Lingam was created by Sitaprati from the Rameswaram sea sand. On the outer pillars of the temple, sculptures of the Sethupathi kings are carved. The history of the temple is very interesting. After bathing in the sea (Agni Theertham) and bathing in the 22 theerthams inside the temple, all sins will be removed. Here the goddess is blessed with the name of the mountaineer's girlfriend. Lord Nandi blesses on a grand scale. Sage Patanjali attained Samadhi in this temple. A must see temple once in a lifetime. You have to visit in person and achieve happiness. The rule is not to stay overnight in this city after bathing in the last of the 22 theerthams, the Kodi theertham. The most magnificent temple. The temple is one of the holiest Hindu Char Dham (four divine sites) sites comprising Badrinath, Puri, Dwarka and Rameshwaram. Very neat & clean temple. Mostly crowded on weekends & public holidays. Reach temple by 4.30 am & wait in the queue for Spatika linga darshan from 5am to 6am daily. There are sixty-four Tīrthas (holy water bodies) in and around the island of Rameswaram. According to Skanda Puraṇa, twenty-four of them are important. Bathing in these Tīrthas is a major aspect of the pilgrimage to Rameswaram and is considered equivalent to penance. Twenty-two of the Tīrthas are within the Ramanathaswami Temple. The number 22 indicates the 22 arrows in Rama's quiver. The first and major one is called Agni Theertham, the sea (Bay of Bengal). There are separate shrines for Ramanathaswamy and his consort goddess Parvathavardhini separated by a corridor. There are separate shrines for the goddess Vishalakshi, the utsava images, sayanagriha, Vishnu and Ganesha. There are various halls inside the temple, namely Anuppu Mandapam, Sukravara Mandapam, Setupati Mandapam, Kalyana Mandapam, and Nandi Mandapam.

Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy is one of 12 most sacred jyotirlinga. Its a divine feeling to be here. Temple is very old and built in 6-7 century. Temple has four gates in each direction and east gate is used for main darshan, Agni kund which is a ghat in sea is just opposite to east gate. Temple opens at 5am in morning and sphatik shivling known as mani darshan is seen only between 5 to 6 am, darshan entry gate is only from east gate. Rituals to follow, devotees need to first take a dip in Agni kund opposite to east gate and then with same wet clothes should enter from north gate for 22 kund bath. Ticket is available for Rs.25 each, then do parikrama of temple for kund snan.. after completing all 22 kund snan, devotees should change clothes and then take entry again from east gate for main darshan. Ticket for general, 100 and 200 available at ticket counter. There are 2 main shivling in centre of the temple. inside garbhgrah Rama shivaling and next left side is vishwa linga, by hanuman ji . Devotees must darshan both shivalinga. Outside garbhgrah huge nandi and other gods temple are made. Hai shiv shankar

Magnificent architecture. A work of art. Also the Puja place is good. But the entire Mandir premise is very untidy and unclean. Garbage, cows, bills and and beggars everywhere.

  • 5/5 Deepak S. 9 months ago on Google
It’s a Holy place and one of the four main Dhams. It takes 2 hours to go through teerthan bath from all the kunds. It takes another 2 hours to get the darshan . The place obviously has lot of singnificance in Hindu dharma. We went in June and it was very very humid. Better plan in Oct-Feb period. Bad: The hotels in and close to Main Street are bad and unhygienic and many local people / shop keepers / auto drivers / hotel receptionists are hostile towards outsiders and tourists.

  • 5/5 Shiva K. 10 months ago on Google
Early morning sphadikam dharsan is best and followed by Main lingam and Parvathi aarthi. Collect koditheertham as well. All theertham baths and site seeing services were arranged by Akash Residency Near to East gate.

Officially you have to just pay Rs. 25/- for a person and walk to the 22 different wells inside the temple. There are staff who will pour the water on you. Unofficially there are people who charge from 150 to 250 per head, they come along with you to all the wells and ensure that you get a bucket from each well.

Finally childhood wish got fulfilled .I am amazed at the grandeur and architecture of the temple. It's a divine feeling being able to visit this temple and only lucky one get opportunity to visit here. Everything is great here, made me really think how glorious our past has been and the expert artists who made this temple. Spend time inside temple and just do not rush to have darshan and come out . Soak up the energy and history and art. Very well managed and cleanliness maintained.

The Holy abode of the Hindu God, Shri Ram (addressed so with all respect & humility) is a virtual paradise for the devout. No Hindu’s journey is complete without a pilgrimage to both Varanasi and Rameswaram for the culmination of his quest for salvation and is hallowed by the epic ‘Ramayana’. Folklore mentions about God Ram’s presence in this land, after his 14-year exile. Local legend has it that Shri Ram was helped back into Rameswaram and into India by his brother Lakshman and Hanuman along with his band of thousands of monkeys, after finally emerging victorious against the demon – Ravana. They helped build a bridge with rocks from the sea and shores to cross the ‘Sethu canal’ and reach Lanka. Lord Rama is also believed to have sanctified this place by worshipping and glorifying Lord Shiva and hence marks the confluence of Shaivism and Vaishnavism and is thus revered by both Shaivites and Vaishnavites alike and thus there is a strong belief that bathing in the 22 ‘Theerthams’ or natural springs is a step forward in enlightenment. Therefore, Rameswaram has rightly been declared as one of the National Pilgrim Centres in the count. The Ramanathaswamy temple by itself is a delight for every tourist. With its magnificent, imposing structure, long corridors, aesthetically carved pillars, the temple is adorned with a towering 38-metre ‘Gopuram’. The temple itself was built by rulers since the 12th century with Sethupathy Maravar beginning the construction of the grand Ramanathaswamy temple that boasts of the ‘Third Corridor’, completed by his successor, Maravar – the longest one in Asia with a 197-metre span from East to West and a 133-metre span from South to North, the third largest in the world! It is said that Swamy Vivekananda offered prayers at this temple in 1897. It is also one of the twelve Jyothirlinga temples, where Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlingam.
