Nice place to visit when you are at Kodikkarai . Own vehicles are allowed to take a tour of sanctuary. There is small entry fee have to pay. One can see many aquatic and other birds. Wild horses and blackbucks are the attraction. We were lucky to see Indian Hare and Indian jackal. Beach at the end of the sanctuary is so serene. Its better to go somewhat early before evening to see wildlife properly. Please like 👍 if the review was useful to you.

We didn’t actually plan to go here. On the way to Madurai, came across the sign and board and just drove in. We went in the wrong time too. We reached there by 1pm and there were a handful of birds that we can see. But in the distance We could see the horizon filled with Migratory birds. The local ppl said by around 4-5 the birds get close to The shore. And seems oct-Nov is the best time to Visit. We planned to come to Again Next Month. The place has no shade for cover from The sun. Carry water and Things for yourself I didn’t see shops anywhere.

Do you know? Birds are nature's gift to the world. The world of birds is beautiful. Birds are also beautiful. Black-necked stork, white-necked stork, egrets, cranes, spoonbills etc. can be seen here. Not only birds but also crocodiles and reptiles and mammals are found here. Most of the world's deer, sambar deer and pigs live here. Big snakes can be seen sunbathing here on sunny days after cold weather. They are curled up here and there and suffocating the body.

Photography-Time Pass-Wildlife. This Kodiyakarai Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary Looks Good. Can Sight Lots of Deer and some Indian Jackal. Other than that there is nothing Here. Not Maintained at all but they collect Rs.5 for Maintenance. Its consider to be little waste of time but Have the vast area of forest area and lots of deer. Vehicles Not allowed inside forest. 7 Km of walk will cover the Forest. Can typically Spend less than a hour. My Recommendation to the visitor is to photograph Deer and Indian jackals and move on. Because you wont find any thing more than that. Sorry for our camera date. Photographed on 31.05.2018.

Best place to see black bucks at their own home. The safari drivers are well knowledgeable about the species inside the sanctuary. You can hear some fascinating stories of the animals from the drivers.

Poor facility. One of the prominent spots to see black buck but then they usually reside almost 6km inside the sanctuary. They dont have transport facility to take you inside and show all around. Bikes are not allowed. If you have your own car you can take it and go all the way to 6kms and see few black bucks, horses. If not other option is to take an auto and he charges around 500 rupees to show inside. Closes by evening 5 PM

A great place to spot indigenous species of Tamil Nadu like the black buck and Indian Jackal. You can also spot lots of wild horses which are not indigenous species but are introduced 1000 years ago by the Arabian traders. During the chola era this was a trading center.

Vedaranyam (Tamil வேதாரண்யம்) is a town inNagapattinam district in the Indian state ofTamil Nadu. The town is named after the presiding deity of the Vedaranyeswarar Temple. The recorded history of Vedaranyam is known from medieval Chola period of the 9th century and has been ruled, at different times, by the Medieval Cholas, Later Cholas, Later Pandyas, Vijayanagar Empire and theBritish. During India's independence struggle,C. Rajagopalachari, who would later become independent India's first Governor-General, launched a salt march in Vedaranyam parallel to the Dandi March launched by Gandhi in 1930 to protest against the sales tax levied on salt extraction.

The Guide: Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary (PCWBS) is a protected area in Tamil Nadu along the Palk Strait where it meets the Bay of Bengal at Point Calimere (Kodiakkarai). This sanctuary was created in 1967 for conservation of the least concern blackbuck antelope, an endemic mammal species of India. The sanctuary, located adjacent to and east of Kodaikarai and Kodaikadu villages, is basically an Island surrounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east, the Palk Straight to the south and swampy backwaters and salt pans to the west and north. Coordinates are between 10.276 and 10.826 N and 79.399 to 79.884 E. Low sand dunes are located along the coast and along the western periphery with coastal plains, tidal mud-flats and shallow seasonal ponds in between. Sand dunes in the east are mostly now stabilised by Prosopis and the higher dunes in the west are stabilised by dense Tropical dry evergreen forests. The tallest dune in the sanctuary and the highest point of land in Nagapattinam District is 7 metres (23 ft). at the northwest corner of the sanctuary at Ramar Padam. PCWBS forms the easternmost and most biologically diverse part of Ramsar Site no. 1210 which, on 19 August 2002, was declared a place of international importance for the conservation of waterbirds and their wetlands habitats. This 385-square-kilometre (149 sq mi) site comprises PCWBS, Panchanadikulam Wetland, Unsurveyed Salt swamp, Thalainayar Reserved Forest and Muthupet Mangroves. It is all part of the Great Vedaranyam Swamp, except the reserved forest.
