What a lovely place on the shores of Kanyakumari. It is extremely peaceful and you can sit in the shade outside of the main room where pictures are kept. It is just amazing. It has pictures of major life events of Gandhi ji which is also quite fascinating nonetheless. Definitely must visit.

Mahatma Gandhi Mandapam is located in the shores of Indian Ocean near to stunning Kanyakumari beach. The life history of Gandhi ji is portrayed here and the ashes of Mahatma kept before being immersed in the ocean. The most remarkable feature is an opening in ceiling of the building is positioned in such a way that (on each 2nd October, the birth anniversary of Mr. Gandhi) sunlight falls on the exact spot where ashes kept in a urn. The memorial is well maintained and the place is not so crowded . Entry is free, open from 7am to 7pm. The view from Mandapam is awesome, especially when the sun is setting. Lovely place to watch captivating surrounding view !!!

This is a memorial that is dedicated to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi. After his demise, his ashes were collected in 12 urns and sent to different parts of the country for the public to pay homage before immersion. One such urn was brought to Kanyakumari for the ashes to be immersed at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. It has several pictures, portraits and photographs of the Mahatma taken or made during various phases of his life. It is beautifully maintained, but it is a pity that the surroundings, when I visited in 2016, weren't as clean as the memorial. The USP of the construction of this Mandapam is, it is so designed that, on the Mahatma's birthday on October 2, the sun's rays are made to fall, through a hole in the ceiling, exactly at the spot where the urn containing his ashes was kept for public homage.

Mahatma Gandhi Mandapam is very near to Kanyakumari beach, built in the honor of Gandhiji(our father of the nation). The view of the Sea and Thiruvalluvar statue from upstairs of Gandhi Mandapam looks wonderful. Admiring feature here is that the building is constructed in the way that, on 2nd October (Birth Day of Gandhiji) sunlight falls exactly on the place where his ashes are kept. Not much crowded! No Entry Fee!!

Nothing much here You can see the old painting, on that about the Mahatama Gandhi life described if you want you can wait here for 30 minutes max. But for me 15 minutes was more because there was nothing much interesting according to me. Renovation work is going on.

As the name suggest this hall (auditorium) has old historical photos of Mahatma gandhi and stories transcribed in walls. Also as a memoir of him a black tombstone is placed in the middle of the hall. During hot sizzling weather visitors often take rest Outside the premises of the hall.

Very nice place any body visited likeBUILT IN 1956, THE GANDHI Mandapam in Kanyakumari, India sits on the site where the famed pacifist’s ashes were kept before they were scattered to the sea and features unique architectural details to honor the beloved leader’s life. After Indian nationalist Mahatma Gandhi was tragically assassinated in 1948 his remains were cremated and sent to various parts of the country to honor various mourning events. One such place was the town of Kanyakumari where a portion of his ashes were put on display before being ritually deposited in the sea. After the ashes were removed, a memorial mandapam (a pillared structure used for public ritual) was built on the site where his ashes had rested. The structure was even built to very specific dimensions just to honor the man. The central spire of the pink facade stands exactly 79 feet high in honor of Gandhi’s age at his death. The most remarkable feature however is an opening in the ceiling of the building which is position in such a way that each October 2nd, the anniversary of Gandhi’s birthday, the sunlight that comes through it falls on the exact spot where his ashes sat. Mandapam’s across India honor Gandhi’s life and works for the Indian people, but this may be the only one that has harnessed the sun for his honor.

It is a good place to visit once. There is no entry fee, only we have to pay ₹5/pair for footwear. Nice history of Mahtma Gandhi Ji with all the pictures. The place is not well maintained. Maybe that's why it is free. Check my video for a complete inside tour.

Located near the shores of Kanyakumari, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial was built in the honour of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation. Also known as Gandhi Mandapam, it is an important part for every Kanyakumari tour, presenting a glimpse into the historical richness of India and into life of the great man that India had seen. Mahatma Gandhi has visited Kanyakumari twice, in the year of 1925 and then in 1937. After his demise in 1948, his ashes were kept in 12 different urns so as to transfer them to different parts of the country. One of these urns was brought to Kanyakumari. Before immersions, it was kept at the spot where the memorial is built now for public so that they can pay their last homage to one of the greatest sons of India. Later the ashes were immersed in the sea waters at Kanyakumari. Later Mahatma Gandhi Memorial or Gandhi Mandapam was built at the same place. The construction of Gandhi Memorial was completed in the year of 1956. An excellent example of modern architecture, it draws inspirations from Orissa style of architecture. The central spire of this mandapam with pink portico has a height of 79 feet which is symbolic of the age of Mahatma Gandhi at the time of his demise. The most striking feature of Gandhi Mandapam is the ceiling of the building. It has an opening that has been built in such a way that on every 2nd October which is the broth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, rays of Sun falls exactly on the spot where his ashes were kept. Another prominent feature of Gandhi Memorial is the view of the surrounding areas from the top of the memorial that is breathtaking. So take your time while visiting Gandhi Memorial and spend some time watching the captivating view. There is also a library showcasing books, magazines, pamphlets and other kinds of literature from the pre independence times. This library can be visited on Friday and Saturday of every week. One can also see various photographs of Mahatma Gandhi and other great personalities who have contributed greatly for India and the world. In the year of 1978, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial came under the administrative control of the Public Department of Tamil Nadu Government. As it is located near Kanyakumari Devi Temple, one can visit both the places together. Timings and Entry Fee of Gandhi Memorial, Kanyakumari The opening timings of Gandhi Memorial are from 7 AM to 7 PM. There is no entry fee for Mahatma Gandhi Memorial. However, you are required to pay a minimal amount of Re.1 for keeping the footwear outside the memorial as footwear are not allowed inside the memorial. This place one of the hotspot for Kanyakumari trip. Museum/mandapam is neat and clean, old photos were kept their to refresh our memory. And this is the place where Gandhi ji ashes kept there before being immersed in Kanyakumari water. Many people already mentioned no entry charges for this place but for keeping shoes you need to pay minimum amount. Sea view from top were mesmerizing and never forgetting activity. You will love the peace and at the same time waves sound will shake you from inside.

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in Kanyakumari is a popular tourist hotspot constructed in the year 1956. It was built in the memory of preeminent Indian leader, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who is popularly known as the Father of the Nation. After his assassination in 1948, his ashes were immersed in Triveni Sangam (confluence of the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal) in Kanyakumari. However, before the process of immersion, the urn containing his ashes was kept here for the public to pay their homage. The architecture of this memorial resembles Hindu shrines of central India, which is why many refer to it as Gandhi Mandapam. The building's central part is 79 feet high, which is symbolic of Mahatma Gandhi's age. A unique fact about this memorial is that it is constructed in such a manner that on the day of Gandhi's birthday (2nd October), the sunrays pass through a hole and fall exactly on the point, where his ashes were kept.A must place to visit at kanyakumari.
